In response to my social media content concerning donuts, I received many recommendations for Gerry's Donuts in Ellington. Those people gave me some rules too. Get there as close to their 6 am opening as possible because they may run out of their most popular donuts by 8 if not earlier. And bring cash. I arrived at 6:15 a.m. There was a steady flow of people, but no line and no apparent missing donut types. The donuts run on the smaller side, but they are a good value. Like $8 a dozen good value. The donuts were obviously fresh made and well executed. They were smartly packaged too. I tried parts of a cruller, a crumb, a cherry, a chocolate toasted coconut and a toasted coconut. All tasty. Great texture. High quality donuts. Gerry's has a classic vibe. There are some tables and some counter seats. Everybody I saw got takeout. Service was helpful and efficient. I used to be a regular here until a couple years ago when their donuts got everyone ill for Mother's Day. Gerry was quoted on his Facebook page saying, "shit happens" because everyone was violently ill after the Mother's Day batch. People were sent to the hospital etc. The Health Dept went in to inspect it and they found mouse droppings, old ingredients which they were forced to replace and we were all ill from norovirus because there was poor handwashing and sanitation at the shop. The donuts were good, cash only and great prices. Gerry and another employee are very cranky but I got through it for the donuts but not anymore for his lack of sympathy and poor humor posted online which he has removed. read more

Gerry's Donuts is a gem of a place and been around for a very long time. Locals know about this place as you have to get there early as they sell out early. Everything is fresh. The donuts are small; it's very easy to eat 2-3 in a sitting so you might as well get a dozen for under $7. They are cash only, be prepared. Service is friendly, but expect there to be a crowd. They move quickly, no idle chit chat, so have an idea what you want when you go in. They run out fast, go early, like 6am if you want all the options. By 8am on a weekend, you've missed too much. Came to this little doughnut shop very early in the morning to make sure I got some fresh rings. Girlfriends mom had only one request for her birthday: coffee in the morning and a boson cream doughnut. So if she wants a doughnut. I'm getting her the best I can find on yelp. Coming to this shops a little weird, since it's right before this massive roundabout. But I managed to get there with no lines which was nice. I was informed that this business doesn't follow covid protocols, and that's somewhat true. The servers wore masks, but they were hanging from their ears. Figured I would give them a shot regardless. The doughnuts are very good! You can tell they are fried on sight because they break where the grease doesn't contact the doughnut. The marbled doughnut had nutmeg and cinnamon layered throughout the doughnut which was awesome with coffee. The Boston cream was stuffed with custard and a little yeasty on the best way. They are also very affordable! A half dozen set me back around 3.25. For the quality, they are a very good deal. Besides the whole lack of covid protocols, this place is a great place to get some doughnuts. If you need a fresh doughnut, you'll be hard pressed to find one this good at this price. Very simple donut shop with DELICIOUS DONUTS. They had a decent variety when I went (~9:3-0 on a Monday), however apparently they usually sell out of a bunch of flavors pretty early on. In addition to donuts, they also have coffee and a few other pastry's. I tried their coffee and it was solid, but their donuts are definitely the highlight. I can't support this business anymore and I would warn you before you try one of their donuts. I've been going to Gerry's for years and they have the best donuts around. They closed abruptly this week due to a health code violation. My 13 year old son, 7 year old daughter and I all ate a powdered donut and all got violently ill. So did many other customers. I had to drop my foster dog off at an event in Ellington, CT. The town is far north from me, close to MA line. I recalled reading a 'best donuts in CT' type of article and there being a shop in Ellington that had rave reviews- Gerry's Donuts. Lucky for this donut connoisseur the shop was practically down the street from where I was. Let me just start by saying I got there after 9a and 90% of their donut inventory was gone. It's an obvious hot spot. And it's got this very classic, old school feel. Their offerings were very basic from what I can see- iced or hot coffee (vanilla only flavor option), danishes, donuts, and bagels (plain cream cheese only). Oh, and sometimes a soup of the day. The donut I selected was the first to catch my eye. I mean, what a pretty color, right?! It was cherry in flavor. I'm not a big cherry fan, but given its beauty and my spontaneous nature, I went for it. Holy smokes- def one of the top traditional style donuts I have had. It was a cherry glaze donut to be precise. Fresh, dank cakey donut w/ cherry pieces. A mouth melting, light glaze, this halo was a palate pleaser. The people of Gerry's were extremely pleasant in dealing with and to chat with and they don't break the bank with their pricing!! They are the best we have ever found. Our favorite is the jelly donuts and we will usually try for at least a full dozen. I love reading negative reviews on local places, when the reviews center around a small business running out of product early because of their quality and the popularity of their fresh made products. Oh yes I too have been disappointed by the bare shelves here at Gerry's even when I was sure I got here plenty early, but my disappointment never turned to anger because they were sold out, I actually can appreciate the fact that they choose to turn away good customers instead of serving them an endless supply of donuts shipped in half stale in the early morning hours or the night before, anyone can do that ask the brands how that's working for them I've witnessed the waste from these high volume low quality donut chain stores they throw out hundreds of pastries a day, I've even questioned them on why this food isn't donated to the homeless shelters or to a food bank and I always get the same answer " we don't want the liability". So how can Gerry still sale a donut for fifty cents....they have no waste! That's right the sinful amount of waste the large chain stores produce is figured into the price of every donut we buy from them, so in essences we are enabling them, they feel no guilt and certainly experience no loss revenue since we are reimbursing them for their shrink. So I will continue to gamble on Gerry's having enough delicious fresh donuts to satisfy my needs and I'll probably adjust my schedule to fit theirs if that's what it takes to get my donut or I'll go without. But I won't write negative reviews because the lack of planning on my part or because they are fortunate to have a customer base that support their efforts.
