This is normally our go-to place for Japanese food close to home, and we usually have great experiences here, which is why this visit was disappointing. We're not sure if the staff was overwhelmed, but several things were off. We typically receive soybeans and pickled vegetables at the start of the meal, but they never came. One of the sushi entrées didn't taste very fresh, and our drinks were never served until we asked. Throughout the meal, we had to repeatedly ask for items that were ordered. Overall, this visit fell short of our usual experience, which was disappointing because we genuinely love coming here and hope this was just an off night.

We had a fabulous lunch and all 3 of us ordered the combo lunch special . We loved the shrimp tempura, toss Japanese salad . We love eating here..the staff are happy to see us

Combination options: tonkatsu, miso butterfish, sashimi, nigiri (comes with miso soup, salad, and rice) Tempura Roll

I'm gonna be truthful, this is a very biased review. Me and my family have been going here forever and have gained a respect and love for this restaurant and the ladies that work there! We are known regulars. But, take into account a lot of what is said below: Very nice and homey dine in Japanese restaurant. I would say it's one of the better affordable sides. Good sushi, good dinner combos, and good seafood over all. Their three choice combos is one of the best deals, but any of their specialty rolls are great too! All the aunties will treat you well! Recommendation: -Super California -Caterpillar Roll -Kikuya Roll -Spicy Fish Stew (great for when you're sick)

Debating between Chubby Boy and Diners, we saw Kikuya in the corner and decided to try something new. From the looks of the dining room, it was filled and lively. Coming in we were told a 10 min wait but a table cleared up as the rest of our party joined us. The service was great, coming by often to check on us. The young male server was great at answering our questions and giving us recommendations. I originally wanted the Grilled Hamachi Kama Special, but they were all out. The Ume Shiso roll also caught my eye, but I ordered it, only the Ume was available - which I ended up taking. I eventually ended with an Unagi Don and the Ume Roll. The Unagi Don was great. Very soft and the sauce that its grilled with was perfectly caramelized. But the Ume Roll was soooo so sour - making it almost inedible (to me). I had someone from our party try it and they had the same reaction. I wish I could give 4.5 stars overall! Will definitely come back to try other items!

Love coming here and getting my Japanese food!! They are on top of serving and super fresh. Small little place so make reservations.

I found this restaurant through yelp. We actually eat at diners and Viet chubby boy a few times but never took notice of this restaurant. I was a little hesitant because of the mixed reviews. But we decided to give it a try. Went on a Friday night around 6:30pm, parking lot was pretty full, walked in and it was surprisingly not busy. Cute old school Japanese vibe. Service was great. Food was good. Price is just right. My mom and I shared a 3 choice combo and were full. My son wanted steak so we all shared. My husband got Tekka and vegetable tempura (which is a pretty good size basket). We all got salad, miso soup, rice, & green tea so it was really filling. Our tummy's were full and for 4 of us it came out to $95 which is not bad at all so my wallet was happy. We will definitely be back! A bonus the salad dressing was really good and they sell the dressing which I forgot to buy so I have an excuse to go back and get it :)

Business is in back of Diners Drive Inn. Parking is shared by many restaurants and businesses. My coworker ordered our food the day before. On day of event, there were 3 tables for 12 of us, 1 table by itself and 2 tables together. Our reservation was for 11:00 am when they opened. Food arrived around 11:30 am. My selection was miso butterfish, teriyaki beef, tempura, miso soup, and sides. Tea was free. Some of us felt that it was hard to talk and hear because it was noisy with other customers.

First time at this location. Great atmosphere, large dining area, sushi bar and drinks bar on opposite ends. Teppanyaki room is separated from restaurant dining area. It also has a separate menu so you need to decide which type of dining you prefer. There are slight differences, such as teppanyaki side dishes. We opted for the dining room section for Bento boxes. We had miso butterfish, chicken katsu and shrimp & vegetables tempura. We had the fried squid appetizer to start. The squid didn't quite look as appealing as the photo in the menu. Quite a bit smaller portion. It was tender with that light crispy texture. The dipping sauce could be better. Pretty bland. The bento came with 3 gyoza, small salad, rice, pickled cucumbers with 2 choice entrees. The salad dressing barely had any taste so felt like eating plain iceberg lettuce. Didn't finish the salad.Gyoza was fair in flavor, pretty basic . The miso butterfish was very tasty with a mildly sweet flavor. The tempura was crispy and light. It was a small portion of 2 veggies and 2 shrimp. They shrimp didn't look freshly made, more like pre-frozen smaller shrimp. Just not the best. Veggies were better overall. The chicken katsu was a decent portion, crisp light brown which my husband enjoyed. It was an enjoyable meal but didn't beat my favorites. Not big on teppanyaki anymore so big families would enjoy that section more. Atmosphere is wonderful but the food needs some improvements. Nothing major and it all depends on your taste.

Service is quick and sweet but the inside could use an update. The food is pretty good I wasn't feeling the spicy ahi. But the California roll is one of the best I have had. It's an older spot things inside are a bit runned down but you get past that when you eat because the food is pretty good. My hubs enjoys the garlic salt steak and he said the chicken katsu was juicy. I'm glad we randomly decided to eat here and try this place out. The seatings are pretty spaced out and they serve you tea right away. Which we love when we go to eat.

They have beer there

Is this the same kikuya that was in kaneohe?

Are you asking about the one in Kalihi? No, I don't think so. It's owned by a Korean that used to be in a golf club I played with.

Is there a semi private or private room for about 15-20?

Yes, its outside

It was his dream to open his own authentic Japanese restaurant using his special omakase experience from Japan and one of the first authentic sushi restaurants in Honolulu. It was a concept of "bringing Japan's finest to Hawaii" with a desire to "build a bridge between the two cultures of Japan and Hawaii." In 2018, operations were taken over by Testsuya Matsuda. A 2nd location was opened in Kahala in Jan 2024 by Hiroshima Mazda, whose specialty is traditional Japanese sushi (or omakase). Yohei Sushi 's menu offerings include: * Teishoku (or set meal). Comes with miso soup, rice, Japanese pickles, cold soba noodles, seasonal side dish. Main entrees are sashimi, tempura, maguro, misoyaki butterfish, ahi steak, saba. Salmon, ahi belly, katsu, and more. * Sushi Bar. With miso soup. Menu offerings are deluxe & standard assorted sushi, maguro don, Chirashi sushi. * Noodles. Choice of udon or soba with various combinations, e.g., nabeyaki, tempura, tororo, tanuki, zaru, kitsune, tori, tukimi, kake, and ojiya udon. Also, combo meals of tendon/noodle, sushi/noodle; and donburi of unaju, oyako don and ten-ju. * Side order & ala carte. Includes sashimi, chawanmushi, ika, shinkomori, murokyu, soft shell crab, miuzuku, Hiyahakko, edamame, tempura. Ahi belly katsu, misoyaki butterfish, saba, seafood tempura, maguro temprta, ahi steak, salmon. We've had the following: * Tendon and Noodle. Deep fried tempura of shrimp and assorted veggies in a rice bowl with sauce & hot udon. Very filling and tasty! * Tempura Teishoku. This teishoku had 3 large pieces of fried tempura shrimp and assorted veggies, e.g., carrot, eggplant, green beans, pumpkin, that were light and non-oily. Our teishoku meals came with pickled veggies, cold soba, rice, and miso soup with lots of wakame and radish sprouts. Very flavorful! They also offered a complimentary birthday scoop of ice cream with a dollop of an as a topping, which was refreshing and paired well! * Maguro Tempura Teishoku. Hubby's choice of fried tempura tuna set, and he noted that there were 8 large tender pieces of maguro that was lightly fried and non-oily. Very delicious and filling! * Unagi nigiri. The unagi was so flaky, tender, and light and had the right amount of sauce. Loved it! The presentation of the meals was beautifully plated with real, authentic Japanese small dish bowls and plates. The food was of good quality and very flavorful! Customer service was excellent! Diners are greeted by staff upon entering and thanked when leaving. The old-time servers were very patient, attentive, welcoming, and gracious! Our food orders came out in a timely manner, and the servers, with smiles, frequently asked if everything was okay and if we needed anything else. Hours of operation are: lunch daily from 11a to 2p, dinner from 5p to 9p, closed Wed. Happy hour is from Thurs to Tues from 1:30p to 5p. Located in Kokea Center that looks like a run-down strip mall at Dillingham Blvd and Kokea St, the restaurant interior has a great ambiance as if you were dining in Japan, as it is comfortable and welcoming. It was amazing to see almost every table was taken by dining customers. Reservations are a must, as people are turned away. Good thing I called for lunch reservations at 12:15p on a weekday, which was tha last table available. And the restaurant was packed the entire time that we were there! Free parking in the private lot shared by other businesses, as well as metered street parking. Despite these changes I was still willing to make this our go to place for sushi. My low rating is because they ruined the place by making it MANDATORY to order the omakase. I don't want to be forced to get the omakase when I know what I like to eat and that's what I want to order. I've been going here for so many years and I am truly disappointed that loyal patronage means nothing to this family owned business. Previously I had ordered the teishoku tempura but next time I'll order the tempura and side of rice. My sister did this and she had such a large serving of various tempura. I think there was four shrimp tempura (the teishoku didn't have as much. Most of the time I've been here the parking was available. But because there are so many other restaurants and stores the parking lot was usually pretty full but perhaps because we were lucky or early there were many spaces. I keep telling myself I need to order bitter melon. But I never do. Maybe next time

Have been flying under the radar on this one and have been enjoying Yakitori Hachibei for many…read moreyears. Its my favorite yakitori place where the grill chef does it right every single time! Flavors are balanced yet full of amazing. Meat skewers of chicken, pork, wagyu A5 beef so tender. The space is intimate yet upscale. It's where I bring out of town guests to for a memorable meal. Love to pregame Hawaii Theatre shows at Hachibei But now that they have announced their impending closure (last day of operations is this coming Sunday). Wanted to get my thoughts of this exceptional establishment down in writing. Thank you to the staff and owners of Yakitori Hachibei for many memorable bites. This fan will miss you. I proudly wear the Duchess crown of Hachibei. Tho, there are still a few more nights of operation. Best wishes in all your future endeavors!

We've been to Yakitori Hachibei a small handful of times over the last few years. Upon earning that…read morethey'll be closing at the end of November, we quickly made a reservation to ensure we'd get one last taste. In the last times that we had visited, there was no omakase option (or we didn't get it anyway) but this time we decided to try it. It was nice to try different dishes than we would've selected ourselves and everything tasted great. I believe it was 12 items for $60. The one sad part was that they no longer offered the kuro goma panna cotta that I REALLY wanted one last time. =( It seems like this restaurant is owned by a restaurant group so hoping the dessert pops up at another one of their restaurants one day. Thank you for the great meals Yakitori Hachibei, you'll be missed!
