Prior experiences have only been for the location in Lahaina. The Kihei location wasn't as in Lahaina. Arrived at 7am (not busy at all and they've been ooen 1 hour already). Ordered a simple breakfast #1 (one egg, meat, potatoes, biscuit). Nithing ruins breakfast like an ice cold over easy egg. "Nit an exaggeration, the egg yolk was still refrigerator cold. We asked the table service person (since there are no wait persons after "order, pay, tip, take a table" process) that the eggs in both meals had super cold yolks (salmonella?). We had found Kihei through social media, we decided to give it a try and were impressed. Although the food was a little heavy it was so good and you definitely get a bang for your buck! My last visit to Maui was 14 years ago, and I hand fond memories of eating at the Kihei Caffe. It had a laid back feeling with a friendly staff. Now that I'm back on the island, I decided to have my first breakfast at Kihei Caffe. Well, I have to say, I'm a bit disappointed in the experience. There's still a line..no problem..the inside has been updated with about 3 TV screens, showing their menu items, but the friendliness and personal charm is missing. My wife and I approached the register, I smiled and provided our choice and there was no aloha friendly warmth. After we ordered and walked back outside, guys were telling people where to sit and instructing people not to seat themselves, but they seemed aloof and indifferent. When my meal arrived, it felt far from my previous experiences from Kihei Caffe. My plate had two eggs, 2 and a half pieces of bacon and some home fries that were cold potatoes that looked and had the texture like yesterday's steak fries. The overall portions left more to be desired. The meal was okay, but definitely not the best breakfast experience to be had on the island. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, which made the visit even more enjoyable. The food quality was excellent--everything we ordered was delicious and clearly made with care. The only downside, and something customers should definitely be aware of, is that they charge a 3% fee for using a credit card. Unfortunately, this wasn't disclosed ahead of time. I believe it should be standard practice to inform customers before payment so they have the option to choose how they want to pay. You order/pay for your food at the counter, and the staff bring out your food, calling your name. The staff always seemed to be really busy, and if you want to get their attention you need to say something as opposed to just standing in front of their counter trying to get their attention with your eyes. I had the loco moco with fried rice and kalua pork. The food was so mid. They charged extra $3 for fried rice & extra $2 for any dishes involving eggs, so my total somehow came to $26 pre tip (I think the pretax price is $16 or $17?). They also gave me overcooked hardboiled eggs (looks like they tried poaching the eggs) instead of sunny side up as requested. The dish was really heavy, and the only silver lining was the big portion of my dish. My friends got some dish with fish and fried banana peppers -- the fried banana peppers were sourly yummy so I liked those, but the fish itself was underwhelming. They also got the ube mochi pancakes which was a special, but the pancakes were void of any ube flavor--they were just sweet with mochi texture, and the color was purple, but ube flavor was almost nonexistent. We ordered the fruit and yogurt, granola bowl and the local moco. We found a seat at their patio seating. They will call out your name and they bring it out to you. Service & Cleanliness: Right away, I noticed multiple signs informing customers that you must place your order and pay before being seated--no exceptions. Make sure to wait for your drinks inside - I made the mistake of getting comfortable at my table before realizing that the drinks are pick up. It's a no frills place. Tables might be a little dirty and the syrup container might be sticky but it all does it's job. We ordered the ribeye moco loco and their banana mac nut pancakes. I am NOT a pancake fan but this is one of the few places that I will eat the whole pancake order myself. It's my must order every time I come here. We have eaten here but one of our favorite things is to get the food to go and head to the beach. We can choose our tables and the staff will call your name out once your order is ready. The entire process was smooth and quick. The location is right by the beach view where you'll get a breeze and the sounds of waves depending on where you sit. Their banana macadamia nut pancakes were absolutely amazing! The reason why we wanted to come here was for that. It definitely did not disappoint at all. There's a coconut cream on the side that you have to pour it all over the pancakes. When ordering, we were asked what we'd like to drink, and although I wasn't planning on purchasing water, we were required to buy a room temperature carton of water for $2. We didn't wait long for our food, and everything came out at the same time. However, the $10 fruit bowl was very underwhelming. It was served in a small plastic cup with a lid and it consisted of grapes, honeydew, cantaloupe, strawberries, kiwis, and blueberries. Given that we were in Hawaii in January, we were expecting the fruit to include seasonal, locally grown fruit. It felt like a pre packaged fruit cup, possibly even from the Foodland across the street. The fruit didn't taste fresh either. The strawberries in particular tasted wilted. This was especially disappointing since the menu describes the fruit bowl as "a mix of fresh seasonal fruit." The food itself was decent, but wasn't good enough to justify having to pay for water and a $10 fruit bowl.
