We grabbed a Da Bento on our way to the airport. Too bad we didn't have time to eat inside which would have been more pleasant! Da Bento is a big box with a variety. Dominated by their mochiko chicken, plus 2 coconut shrimp, a few teriyaki beef slices and one spam slice, mac salad and rice. The coconut shrimp was the standout for us. The chicken was dry and was the least of the three mochiko chicken meals we tried on our trip. The beef was also just OK. I enjoyed the mac salad. Overall just OK. service was nice. read more

Everyone I talked to was talking about this place so of course we had to go. Nice little place doing a brisket business when we went on Saturday afternoon. Lots of seating, good for groups. You order then sit (I believe) as thats what most people were doing. They bring you your food (think pancake & Waffles) when it's ready and you grab your own condiments. I ordered The Bento because I couldn't make up my mind. It included rice, mac salad,1 slice spam, Mochiko Chicken, BBQ Beef, and 2 large pieces of Shrimp Katsu. Mochiko Chicken is light and crispy and the Shrimp Katsu was battered and huge. The BBQ Beef was succulent and juicy however the sauce wasn't overwhelming. Spam is spam. The rice was a tad dry however the mac salad was good. I did not eat any of the other plates however since all were empty, Im assuming it was Ono. Next to the register there is a display case with various desserts. The next day going home, we stopped by to grab some dessert. The Lava Rocks come in a pair at $5.50. Moist, soft and super chocolaty. The chocolate haupia bar was very nice and not overly sweet. The Chantilly brownie was very chocolaty with a hint of Chantilly and nuts only on top. I would recommend DA BENTO or BIG KAHUNA to try a little bit of everything and sub a side for the BRUSSELS SPROUTS!! Da Bento comes with fried shrimp, fried chicken, spam and beef teriyaki. While the Big Kahuna comes with fried fish, fried chicken, and beef patty. Overall the tastiest things were the beef patty and shrimp other than the Brussels which were so flavorful and crispy. I don't know how I haven't reviewed Kalei's until now. It's now a tradition that after stopping at Target for provisions, we stop at Kalei's before heading to the hotel. Everything we've ordered here has been delicious. My favorites are the chili garlic shrimp (though I don't love the shell on preparation) and the shrimp katsu. I'm also a huge fan of their rice (not gluey and cooked perfectly) and their mac salad. Our most recent trip to Maui got us in during breakfast and I had their corned beef croquettes. Delicious! I highly recommend Kalei's. Their menu has something for everyone, service is A+ with friendly and helpful staff and the food is delicious. read more

Kalei's is the local spot in Central Maui if you're new to the island and wanting to try some ono Plate lunches or you're a local trying to satisfy your cravings! I treated myself today and got the Mini Ono Ala Kalei with Capers, Tomatoes, Mushrooms in this frothy butter sauce! It's sooo addicting! It's accompanied by a side of rice and instead of the Mac Salad, you can opt for healthier choices like the Side Green Salad with Papaya Dressing or they have their famous Hurricane Brussel Sprouts. If I'm trying to be budget friendly, they have a yummy Saimin which is $6 if you're wanting some comforting broth and noodles or a Weekly Cheap Eats which is $6 and basically a mini lunch plate. Mondays are always my favorite because they have Shoyu Chicken and sometimes Chili with Hot Dog. I heard the cashier say 4 is the Cheap Eats limit or they'll charge more. My friends usually get the Mahi Burger, Chop Steak, and can't go wrong with a Hamburger Steak or Loco Moco. They usually have a selection of pies & breads. Today didn't really have much. Try their Pumpkin crunch, selection of cheesecakes like Blueberry or Strawberry or their Mud Pie. Go for the Banana Bread if you're wanting Bread instead of the Mango. I was pretty disappointed when I got the Mango Bread before, it was a bit more dry and didn't have those mango pieces throughout. Overall, a great spot if you're wanting some local kine grinds. Solid first stop place off the plane with the rental car! Not the best ever but such a great affordable and quality options! Inside dining that I suspect get busier at certain times. We were there on a late Sunday afternoon. Mostly locals but in a nicer strip mall with a great Safeway for groceries and other business. Good parking generally. I just got a basic Saimin and it was adequate and tasty. Not best ever but I enjoyed it. My wife got the Ono burger that was in fact Ono brah! Nice small staff and pretty quick service. It was a better and more enjoyable choice than Tin Roof as inside dining available though food quality between the two choices is subjective to the one eating. Tin Roof is closed Sunday and Monday. Kaleis has some great deals on bento combos weekdays I was sorry we missed but maybe another time when we are in town! Go Try Try! read more

Another spot recommended by a local so I was super excited to try this during my stay in Maui. The Maui Lani location was just a 10 minute drive to our hotel by the airport, making this a convenient spot to pick up some last minute food before heading home. I thought food was good although a bit generic as this place is mostly take out style. Even though we chose to dine in, the food was served in takeout boxes and disposable utensils. There were lots of clean open seating area for those who dined in but It seemed like there were many locals in the store who called ahead or ordered online for pickup, not as many tourists. We ordered the Saimin, hurricane fries, and Da Bento lunchbox. Out of all the items we got, I liked the hurricane furikake fries the best. It was crispy, umami, and full of flavor. The Saimin and bento box were good as well although I wish I ordered more unique items from the menu. We weren't hungry enough to order individual plates, so we shared one bento lunch plate and got sides. Here's our take: - Da Bento Box: mac salad nice and cold, mochi chicken had lots of flavor, shrimp was BIG (came w two), and beef was tender with lots of flavor. Great variety for a plate lunch. - brussel sprouts: loved char and the pork belly bits were nice touch - fried rice: HUGE for the price and had spam! Triple Double is a good deal $9: two eggs (any way), two bacon (offered choice of other breakfast meat), and two pancakes. The ahi burger that my wife had was good. She rated it 2.5 to 3.0 stars. She had tater tots with it. I ordered fried rice without vegetables. Only tasted slightly different from white rice. 2.0. Was about 86 degrees outside and their air conditioning was weak and wimpy. Not too comfortable slightly sweating while eating lunch. It was around 80 degrees inside with the air conditioner running. Just looked at my receipt. Got a surprise. A 3% SURCHARGE because I paid with a credit card. No notice was posted and nothing was said to me about that. For a 3% surcharge, I should get a cool room to eat my lunch and not have to eat it in a sweat. I base my ratings on food quality. If I considered this hidden 3% charge for a credit card, I would lower their rating to 2 stars. We have no plan to ever return to this restaurant. read more

Both were amazing but I highly recommend trying the breaded beef teriyaki plate - super unique with crispy breading fried over marinated and tender beef. Order and pay at the counter. They have lots of dessert options in a case which we didn't try but looked really good. Open seating which we didn't have an issue finding a spot when we arrived during a weekday lunch time. I really LOVE Kalei's Lunchbox, what an amazing place! I usually stick to my usual spots for breakfast but during one of my weekend trips to Maui I was happy to make a change to Kalei's for breakfast, then we stopped by for lunch on another trip, and this recent visit we stopped by to grab some food for flight after our 5 hour layover. ( which was more than enough time) Kalei's Lunchbox is so nice, spacious, clean and welcoming! Order at the counter, you can either dine in or take out. The staff is so nice! They have great local foods, plate lunches, daily specials and I am shocked at their $6. cheap eats, where can you get $6. cheap eats nowadays. Although our visits are normally on a Saturdays - the only day there is no cheap eat specials. When we got breakfast for the very first time, I remembered we only spent under $15. for 2, you really can get more bangs for your bucks here. I also tried the Ono fish special (Kalei style) for lunch and that was so good too! For this most recent visit (5/2025), I got chicken katsu ($7.) mochiko chicken ($7.) and chow fun ($8.) for our flight. Me and the other half shared our chicken and so we could half both katsu/mochiko and ate our plate with chow fun too & yay, wow! I loved how the chow fun is cooked, Okazuya style, never had chow fun like this for so long. Super happy belly, we got food for our flight, what a treat, enjoying lunch, watching a movie, while in the air. What a great combination, made the other passengers next to me jealous, hehe. this is our favorite dish, but it's a hit or miss lately, sometimes it's strips and sometimes it's the full pieces. We prefer the whole pieces over the strips as the full pieces are more juicy and less burnt pieces. Please bring back the full pieces of chickens that were uncut. OK, this is my favorite kind of restaurant in Hawaii, local grindz in a clean and modern setting. From what I've read, they started as a food truck, then opened in Kahului and now in Lahaina and I can see why. She got the special with a small hamburger and a small bowl of saimin for $12. She wasn't crazy about the burger but the saimin was good. I got Chicken Katsu with curry and it was delicious! I would definitely get this again but I also want to try other dishes here. My girlfriend and I went here the other day and she had the corned beef hash with eggs over easy and rice. I decide to have the smoke meat plate. This is Definitely a local dish but it's not the easiest to get right. The way kale is makes it brings back childhood memories. My dad and my uncles and my grandfather used to hunting and then they would make different things like sausage and smoke meat was one of those things. The recipe they use and the flavorings are all reminiscent of these things. The service is always good every time we go. I like the roominess and really like the pictures on the wall. Just a shame that the view of the harbor is wasted unless you got to the bathroom. But I know they had no control of that it was whom ever designed the building. We started with a croissant sandwich, and the croissant itself was nice and warm--perfectly flaky and made the whole sandwich feel fresh and wonderful. We also got two bentos, and they had the right kind of mix with a variety of great flavors that complemented each other perfectly. The service, however, was what made the experience truly memorable. The employees looked like they were in high school or early college, but their customer service was some of the best I've ever encountered. They must have great mentors because they were attentive, polite, and truly seemed to care. While the food is the main attraction, the incredible service is a huge bonus. Food came out quickly, portions were large and we all left happy. The kids meals are impressively well priced considering how much food is in them! My family ate here twice and both times were not disappointed. The slow cooker pork and beef stew were particularly good. Flavors from both support a slow cook experience and the gravy by itself could be a meal. They were a tad skimpy on gravy especially when eating with a healthy scoop or two of white rice ( if skipping the macaroni salad ). Pricing was reasonable and the staff was friendly but a little scarce once seated and the food was delivered. In fairness they only recently opened and were trying to hire for just about every position. So I don't ding them for being less attentive. Our first time visiting this place, looks so promising online and pictures. We ordered 3 plates including a side of fries, we ordered at 5:49p and never got an update until 6:25p, I asked the cashier what ever happened to our food she said let me check, later she says it's gonna take another 10mins. Keep in mind 7ppl ahead of us got there food and we haven't. I was a little frustrated. Later she tells me oh they missing something, I asked what was it they said the fries and they had a catering order that came between the order. I was like well it would have been nice to be notified so that we not waiting sitting like ducks for our food. Later she refunded the items, the added tip was NOT refunded. There is also a surcharge of 3% on the order. She hands me the bag of food then tell me no fries (which I originally had on my order) talk about missing food and later the bag was soaked with oil from the fish soup. What a horrible experience and waste of time. Very disappointing. I'm adding that the customer service was flat, no apologies just a look like it was my fault.
