First time visiting this sushi bar and will be my final time. Customer service was terrible. 1. Reservation was set for 730pm didn't get seated til almost 8pm. I had to get the host attention at the door to seat me. Mind you my reservation was only for one person which was me. Once i confronted the hostess about my reservation and clearly told her I made a reservation she proceeded to give me a paper to write down my information and tell me "we're completely booked" when clearly there was one empty chair. I would highly recommend Koiso! It is a restaurant ran by three people. They ONLY take reservations so make sure to make them ahead of time - they also fill up very quickly so sometimes you need to make them months in advance. The quality of the food was amazing, I would highly recommend getting the omakase - it's very worth it at it's price. We were lucky enough to get a reservation at Koiso. Make sure you call ahead to get a reservation on the 1st of the previous month. They do at most two seatings per day when they're open, just 11 counter seats and a 4-top. The restaurant was completely full for our early evening sitting. I'd describe the dining room and experience as very traditional. None of the neighboring hotel glitz - just simple ingredients, prepared by a master in time-honored tradition as good as you'd get in the best establishments of Japan. There is clearly a strong local clientele that you will compete with to get a seat - reservations get snapped up that fast, don't delay. We sat at the counter. On the menu were many market priced a-la-carte fish and shellfish options - sashimi, maki, nigiri, amongst others. We selected for Chef Hiro-San to take us on a delicious journey through his vision of Omakase. Also chose a bottle of Saké to accompany our meal. Delicate fish. Beautiful presentation. So many details. It was quite something to watch Chef work - however the ingredients were always the star of the show. It was a delight to be entertained by Chef Hiro-san. The restaurant is very much a family affair, with Chef's wife running front-of-house. Anthony Bourdain has also visited this sushi bar - that should say enough. I ordered the Blue fin Chu-toro, salmon, California roll, spicy tuna roll and 69 roll, and miso soup. They provided a complimentary salted edamame and fresh fruit as desserts afterwards. What can I say, the sushi does not get any fresher than this. The quality, care and art that Chef Hiro puts in all the orders is amazing. If you can, I would advise sitting by the bar. This is a less 15 sushi bar seater. You must have a reservation and you must call to get this reservation. I highly suggest doing so months in advance. This is so far at the top of my list for the best sushi places I have visited. I've tasted numerous AYCE and Non-AYCE in and out of Vegas. It has been almost a week since leaving Maui and everyday I wish I can walk into Koiso and eat their Sushi. read more

Years ago during a visit back home to Maui in the days before covid we happened to visit the tiny strip mall where Koiso is located. As I peered through the glass windows I thought...wow this place looks legit! Fast forward a few years later upon our return to Maui, I absolutely had to try Koiso and see what all the buzz was about. Living on the East Coast, I dutifully set my calendar and timer for the first of the month and 10:00 pm (they open at 5:00 pm) to nab a highly sought after reservation. I was lucky enough to land a table during our trip and waited in eager anticipation for our visit. When we arrived the hostess checked our vaccine cards and verified my reservation before seating us at the bar. The social distancing was superb as on my sister and I and another party were seated at the bar. They even provided plexiglass dividers between us for additional safety. The only other guests in the restaurant was a party of 5 seated at the only table in the restaurant. I proceeded to order the only most appropriate dish...the omakase sushi. This was absolutely outstanding! The fish was super fresh, prepared beautifully with thick and well trimmed cuts and sushi rice was prepared perfectly. Some of my favorites were the hamachi, kanpachi, aji, chu-toro, maguro, and anago. The absolute best was a combination uni (from hokkaido) and ikua. Oh man, this just melted in your mouth and was so savory and delicious. Oishii! The service was extremely friendly and attentive. I enjoyed meeting the staff as they seem to care deeply about making sure guests have a great experience. We had an amazing visit and I am looking forward to our next trip to Maui and to Koiso! read more

Our go to sushi restaurant in Maui. We like it so much we went twice this trip which required us to drive the 2 hour roundtrip from Kaanapali to Kihei. Making reservations isn't the easiest either since you have to call the 1st of the month to make reservations for the following month. Be prepared for a busy phone line that you probably won't get thru until a few hours later. It is a no frills no thrills type sushi dinner that offers very fresh and yummy tasting seafood! We typically order the omakase and then order any additional items from the special a la carte menu. I'm typically not an Aji fan but when I am here I always get seconds! Where to begin... I love this place! First off; it's a family business. Looks like the dad is the sushi chef, mom and daughter are servers. Super cute Japanese family. Also, their system is a bit weird as it felt like waiting forever for your food. But trust me, Be patient! They'd liked to bring out most things at once. And there's only one chef making sushi for 16 people. Moving onto the food. Omgee. It is excellent rice and excellent sushi. I'd say it's comparable to a 4-5 stars sushi high end restaurant in terms of quality and flavoring. And pricing is so cheap! I've NEVER had Omakase (chefs selection) at 55/pp (post is 1/2023). Literally every omakase I've had in my life is at least $98 and above. And I've had quite a few Omakase. Every piece melts in my mouth. Would definitely come back. Ps. You'd need go make at least 1 month out for reservation. I hope they'll still be in business when I come back to Maui in the future. I'm a local and had Koiso for the first time tonight. They have always been busy and booked out too far in advance so I never bothered until this pandemic hit. Tonight I had a party of 4 and had to make a reservation 2 weeks in advance to get a table. Their customer service was great. The lady was very kind and attentive. Their fish was so fresh and did NOT have even the slightest bit of fishiness to it. Definitely will be back. Already scheduled our next dinner reservation before we left. Just an FYI for anyone who is coming to eat here during covid. They are only taking reservations, unless by chance they have an opening when they "open" for customers. 2 time slots per day, either 6pm or 730pm and they are only taking 10 customers max per time slot. There's only 1 sushi chef to help the 10 customers, so each party gets about 1.5 hours to enjoy their meal then they sanitize their dining area for the next round. I highly suggest calling a reservation in advance bc even without the tourist they are normally fully booked. Please don't get upset when you're refused as they are just doing their part to keep our kama'aina safe. read more

Make sure you call at least one day before to order for take out. They will not take same-day take-out orders. And sometimes they're even sold out. The staff members were super nice. It wasn't the best omakase that I've ever had, but each piece was very generously thick. The chef put his own flair into the flavors and it was very refreshing and fresh. $100 for this platter. I ordered it a week in advance. When I arrived it wasnt on the table with the rest of the "to go" orders but they eventually found it in the fridge??? Based on the taste this fish was not fresh at all. Not sure if they made it the night before and refrigerated it but we spit out more than half the platter because it tasted and smelled EXTREMELY fishy. Multiple different cuts of fish were stringy and tough. I literally had better sushi from a grocery store. Go to Island Gourmet Markets or the Poke Bar at Foodland Kihei and the fish will be fresher than what I received. I have tried lots of sashimi and nigiri. I have dined at many very good "five star" sushi places in New York and California. This place does not deserve the absurdly high rating they have in my opinion. Maybe its because im not Japanese or a local so I didn't get their best fish but at $100 I truly feel robbed. This was the restaurant I was most looking forward to in Maui and I was severely, severely disappointed. I did try one other sushi place in the same week and it didn't even begin to compare. So do yourself a favor: make a reservation for this place. And yes, you'll need a reservation. We called on April 1 to secure our May 31 reservation. You'll need to call on the first day of the month BEFORE the month you want your reservation. There's only like ten seats in the place. The sushi is so good and so fresh. I think the Omakase is the way to go, but you might want to save room to order some extras as well. I also got the salmons avocado roll, which was also delicious. You really can't go wrong here. The service was great and super attentive as well. Don't be satisfied with subpar sushi: you will want to go here. read more
