I am not sure where to begin. lol
It was a celebrate! I took my brother out for his birthday for some yummy authentic fare.
Starters:
Pork Dumplings
Crab Rangoon
Fried Mantou (with condensed milk)
The pork dumplings were ok. they were crispy on the outside. the pork was bland and flavorless inside and the sauce just the same.
Crab Rangoon- Very crispy on the inside. Creamy and oh so flavorful!
The Fried Mantou- allow me to explain this starter. It was like a fried piece of dough, looked like a 3 dimensional square/a cube. You are to take the condensed milk and dip/pour. They only gave a TINY vessel for the milk. But the dough itself was a TREAT. If the milk had been drizzled or there was more of it- it would have been a powerhouse!
Main Entrees:
My sister ordered Chicken and broccoli. I tasted it. IT WAS SO GOOD. Tender. Ok, I only tasted the meat, but wow!
My brother ordered the General Tso. OMG, I am unsure what they marinate their chicken in, but it is magical. His was super tender as well.
My daughter and I wanted to explore with ramen/noodle bowels. This is where things went left.
There is this form that you fill out with steps 1-5 I think it was.
You begin with rice/noodles. Then all the fun things you want to experience inside the bowl. Assorted meats, vegetables, egg, you could select the type of broth (veggie, chicken, beef). You even had the option to choose how spicy or not you desired your bowl. Each section had a price attached to it. So just image how pricey a bowl could get! Whew!
I ordered noodles, with a sweet soy chicken wing, fresh picked crab, spicy bamboo shoots, marinated soft boiled egg, in beef broth.
It looked amazing. It did not smell that way. the broth was bland. everything was so mushy. the chicken wing was went and soggy. The crab meat was barely visable. Every thing just seemed to float in this bath of flavorless broth. There was no pow, bam, zip. It looked like a party initially but in my mouth -the lights were out and even the janitor was gone for the night. I was very disappointed. Very.
My daughter had a noodle bowl as well. She had some veggie, Chicken broth, pork belly, and satay pork skins.
I refused to taste hers after my experience. But her meal looked really BUSY with a lot of soggy things floating that she stated didn't have flavor and it made her gag.
THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE NIGHT:
They have amazing Iced Teas! My sibs ordered Iced Passion Fruit Tea (and had seconds-no refills). I had Iced Green Apple Jasmine Tea. And yes, I had a to-go cup as I walked out. This tea was so tasty. I couldn't get enough I had to sip slow.
Interesting enough, the place was almost packed upon our arrival. And more and more people kept coming. It was packed.
I won't lie, I was confused, I felt like I was missing something. Maybe they knew something that I didn't. Maybe I ordered all wrong and this was my punishment.
The server didn't do hardly any talking. I had no idea what protocol was. So we looked at the menu for a while then took our luck at ordering things that sounded nice. I wish there was more interaction. Like "Is there a special for today? Do you suggest anything ? " I don't know. They honestly just said hi and waited till we decided on what to get. Nothing was said after. Then after it was all over I had to keep raising my hand for them to bring to go containers and for the check.
I am sorry to say, WE did not have a good time at all. I had to apologize to my brother on his birthday for making a not so great choice for dinner. I did try. I did research. It just didn't work out. I went home hungry as I did NOT eat my bowl. The tea made me VERY happy though. Very good tea!
My advice? Try this restaurant if you like. I doubt if we return. But I will be visiting other places in Chinatown as soon as the weather gets warm.
