Was a bit chilly out so was searching for hot soup for dinner. Kaya is somewhat hidden in a corner of a strip mall. It was an interesting set up in that there is table service but you need to pay at the window when you're done. I knew that I've found the right spot when I saw that most of the customers were Korean. I ordered spicy short rib soup with dried cabbage. It was boiling hot, well flavored and well spiced. My boyfriend and I LOVE Kaya Restaurant. We have been dining at Kaya for over 2 years now and the meals have hit the spot every single time!! We personally believe they have the best traditional Korean food in the area. We order the seafood tofu soup every time we visit because it always comes out piping hot and with a generous amount of protein-- perfect for the winter time. This time we tried the Jajang Tangsooyook Set as well, which will probably become a regular for us too. The jajang (black bean) noodles had a generous portion of beef and noodles, and the tangsooyook (fried pork) was so perfectly crispy and complemented so well with the sweet and sour sauce. On top of the great food, the price of every entree is beyond reasonable for the portion you get and the staff is always friendly! Another plus? They have Kpop playing on their TV. We have yet to have a mad meal here. Kaya appears to be a family run restaurant, so you can truly feel the love in the food and the staff. Looking for a place to grab food near my hotel and this had the best reviews nearby so I figure I would try it out. It's in a little strip mall the inside isn't very large so it wouldn't be ideal for large groups but perfect for a family dinner or like me an individual looking for something authentic and tasty. The waitress was super friendly and checked on me multiple times throughout my meal. Service was definitely awesome. Now there was a lot on their menu that I was interested in, but I decided on Soft Tofu Stew with beef, a two piece pork egg roll, and a milkis to drink (it's a canned Korean soft drink). Now I love spicy food and normally restaurants say something is spicy but then it's very mild this actually had kick to it. I could have eaten it with more spice but it's definitely has a kick. Egg rolls were nice and crunchy with the right amount of flavor. It was the perfect amount of food also served with banchan (Korean side dishes) all well made and flavorful. Small mom n pops place in high point. They offer hibachi plates Monday through Friday. I ordered the chicken and shrimp plate. It was delicious. A friend in Greensboro has been raving about this restaurant in High Point (just minutes from Greensboro) for awhile now...so I finally made plans to visit her and this gem of a restaurant! For starters, I must mention that I found it strange that this restaurant is advertised as Japanese-Korean...given how it's basically a Korean restaurant, with at least 90% Korean specialties. Really, the only Japanese items I saw on their menu were Tonkatsu and Udon. The entire staff seemed to be Korean as well. In any case, this is a completely authentic Korean restaurant...as far as I can see it! Am thinking they added the word Japanese since most folks are more familiar with Japanese foods?? The place was casual, but had a nice, comfy layout and ambiance (complete with K-Pop on screen)...and a super-friendly menu! In fact, they had this pictured menu of all the dishes on the big screen, with price points...many of which I MUST return to try (like their Galbijim, my favorite Korean food of all time!). Anyway, my friend recommended their Tangsuyuk...and she was totally right. It was one of the best I've had in recent years!! They even had this "Jjajang-Tangsuyuk Set" on the menu, which came with a HUGE bowl of Jjajangmyun, a generous portion of Tangsuyuk, Kimchee and Takuan. Jjajangmyun and Tangsuyuk are my favorite Korean food combo...so this set was an obvious choice....and was definitely enough for 2 to share! Jjajangmyun was delicious also, but I thought it could have been spicier. Still, I was impressed with their "meaty" version...with generous chunks of savory beef in them! Although it didn't have that deep, spicy Jjajangmyun flavor, it still had this great, luscious flavor. Still, the Tangsuyuk was stronger of the 2. Overall, this combo meal was a was SUCH a satisfying meal...and all for only 22 bucks!! I just can't believe it took so long for me to take a road trip over to this area (less than 2 hours from where I live). I recently visited and tried the Stir Fried Spicy Pork and the Beef Chow Fun. My first experience with Beef Chow Fun was a few years back in Chinatown, NY. MY FAVORITE MEAL during my trip to NC came from Kaya Restaurant: 重庆鸡 (Chongqing Spicy Chicken). It was SO FLAVORFUL & SPICY! But first, let me explain. After a brief, but pleasant conversation with the order-taker, I asked him: "What do you recommend? Something with chicken & very, very spicy. What do YOU like most?" "How spicy?" he replied & I raised my hand up high & emphatically stated "I like VERY, VERY SPICY!" He told me, "this is what I like" (pointing to the menu) "but it is very spicy and it is Chinese, not Korean." I assured him that that is what I want -I eat very spicy. He then said it would take 30 minutes because they are very busy. "No Problem," I replied & eagerly awaiting my meal. I would guess that in ~15 mins he brought me the most delicious meal I've had this entire trip! 重庆鸡 (Chongqing Spicy Chicken) looks very simple. It's basically fried cubes of chicken. It didn't appear to be battered & there were no signs of dry seasoning. No sauce. Would it be dry? It did contain TONS OF dried red chili peppers. Scary! Yet it ended up being so delicious! The chicken was full of flavor -ginger, garlic, the peppers & who-knows-what! With my chop sticks, I started to avoid the dried peppers & eat only the chicken with the rice. I highly recommend. My wife and I opted to split a seafood pancake, a bimimbap, and a spicy pork. As expected, they came with an array of banchan, and portions were plentiful. Though food quality varied, nothing was worse than average. The spicy pork was delicious. It was served hot with onions and slathered in a delectable sauce. The seafood pancake's dough-to-seafood ratio favored the former though it was still quite tasty. That said, the bimimbap was a mixed bag. I appreciated the array of vegetables included though it was fairly light on meat. It also was not served sizzling, but that was my fault for not realizing that I needed to order the dol (stone pot) version. Thanks to some great reviews on Yelp, I decided to try out Kaya for lunch on a Tuesday. I am happy to report that it was everything I expected it to be, and the co-worker i took here also liked the restaurant. The interior of this restaurant is very unassuming, they have wooden table/chairs separated unto sort of individual eating areas by wooden boards. Once you enter, you order tge food at the counter infront and a very kind, polite server brings it out to you once it is ready. I ordered the teriyaki chicken lunch special which comes with rice, salad, choice of sauce and a drink and the portions will fill you up! The portions sizes are great and you could definitely have left overs for a later meal. Now the reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5, Is because I was expecting the food to be a bit more spicy...but it turned out pretty mild which is sort of turn-off for me as I love spice in my food. Another great family owned and run restaurant in the greater Greensboro area. Excellent Korean food, made fresh for you. I had Jjajang tangsuyuk set. It is crispy pork served with a sweet and sour sauce and a spicy (flavor not heat) black bean and noodle dish. This also came with kimchis (see pics of all below). It was kind of the young man to ask if I had both the kimchi and black bean noodles as they can have a. Slightly strong flavor to a more western plate. This spot has been on my places to try list. I would agree that it is more Korean forward. The server (and cook and host?) was very kind. He showed me the proper way to eat the dolsot bibimbap. I would highly recommend stirring in the hot sauce for a much bolder flavor. The banchan was pretty standard fare. Note the kimchi was on the milder spice side of the spectrum. I have been to Kaya a couple of more times since my original glowing review, and the good news is that this place is remarkably consistent! Everything I have eaten is filled with so much flavor, made fresh to order, and served piping hot! Things I have tried since my initial visit include the beef Bibimbap which was simply the best version I have had anywhere. The bowl it came in was blistering hot, to the point where the rice touching it crystallized with the rendered fat of the meat to make this beautiful golden "rice bark" that was just something brilliantly delicious. Their homemade (seemed so at least) hot sauce also had the perfect complementary flavor, that when drizzled over each bite made this a definite re-order. But... the piece d' resistance, is their stir-fried spicy pork. Y'all. I had to take a minute after my first bite and just shut my eyes to enjoy the burst of spices, heat, and the succulent meaty bits that I was holding in my mouth. It came out on basically a fajita skillet, crackling and popping like you'd be accustomed to at a Mexican restaurant, except in this case it was bits of tender pork and pork belly stir-fried perfectly with onions, peppers, green onion, and sesame seeds. Tossed in with some of the rice... man. Forget about it. Stop reading. Just go get it. You'll see my pictures, they'll make you want it. GO HERE. Get their Korean offerings. Immediately upon walking I was greeted by a man with a physical menu. He explained the differences between the Korean dishes and other things they offered. I asked his favorite Korean non-soup dish and he recommended the Dol Sat Bibimbap amongst other dishes and I decided on the bibimbap. Later, the same man who approached me with the menu approached to ask if everything was tasting good and offered his cultural knowledge on hot pot, soups and when to add the side ingredients seen in the photo. He even stirred it together for me and told me this is how it should be eaten! This has to have been one of the best service encounters I've had in a restaurant in years. The hot pot came out so hot you couldn't touch the bowl--rice crisping at the bottom. The egg was fried over medium and had a beautiful yolk and the textures of all of this combined was amazing. Solid spice and the side sauce served with it was a great combination of tangy and sweet. The fresh sprouts and vegetables provided an inviting snap to the palate. The soup was incredible. Light, fresh cracked black pepper dominant and slightly salty from what I could only imagine is likely a noodle stock. The combination of flavors, service and experience here is a must try. I was overly impressed with this place despite not being local and just stopping in. If you enjoy fresh ingredients made quickly and with a smile you have to try this place! The food here is delicious!! I am so happy to come across this place. Everything was super super good! I really wished we could of ate there, but got it for take out instead. Food was still hot when we got there, so that made me happy. We had: C3 Bulgogi C11 shrimp fried rice S3 Yukgaejang They were all delicious and all come with plenty of side dishes. My only complain, was that S3 had very to little meat. Lots and lots of veggies. It was still good but kind of dissatisfied lol. I loved the heat to it though! I like Kaya. Their menu is more Korean than Japanese whis is great for me. I have eaten there a half dozen times or so with a Korean friend who assured me that they are quite authentic. Kaya is apparently gem I've driven by hundreds of times. Inconspicuously occupying the end unit in a business strip, thanks to Yelp I now know that I've been missing out on some delicious Korean and Japanese food. The menu has a few familiar selections but mostly consists of options I don't see in many restaurants. Main dishes start in the $15 range. If you have a short lunch break I suggest ordering ahead for pickup. Portions are very generous. The Hibachi lunch special has to be the best around. The typical vegetable medley gets mixed up a bit with the addition of cabbage. My chicken was seasoned well along with rice that is not bland but also not drenched in sauce. The N5 menu option was pretty bangin'. I'll say a gigantic portion of squid, shrimp, and onions in bean sauce served over noodles made my mouth happy. Served with sides of kimchi and pickled radish this was a meal that many would split with someone. Yep...Yonge and Finch! LOL! I decided to go really bad for the diet and try the JjaJjangMyun (Black Bean Noodle) and TangSooYuk (Sweet and Sour Pork) combo. For about US$15 it's a bit expensive but hey...it's the only K-Food for miles around. Upon ordering the kind lady who did her best to understand my limited Korean - and I did my best to understand her limited English - handed me a large styrocup. You get unlimited fountain drinks and brewed ice tea. I'm not expecting much but holy moly...the TangSooYuk was probably one of the best I had. They serve it to you un-drenched in sauce. You get to ladle the amount you want onto the crispy pork strips. The pork was moist and not overcooked - like most places. The portion was also really large, so large that I was only going to eat about half and take the rest with me. After a very long wait, I ended up finishing my TangSooYuk and was wondering if they got my order wrong as my JiaJjangMyun was not coming out. I decided to leave at this point and chalk it up to the language barrier. As I was packing up, the son brought out the noodles and shortly after the mom came and apologized for the long wait. I was pretty well full now but I decided to give it a go. The sauce was sweeter than I liked and the noodles were overcook. I guess it was sitting for a fair bit. Too bad. None the less this combo is really for two. At the cash, the lady apologized for the wait and proceeded to offer me some more stuff. I kindly declined as anything she give me will go to waste - I am travelling about and can't take it with me. We also got into a conversation about how many Korean families were in the local area and found out that there might be around 2000 K-peeps. I thought that it was a lot for the area but then realized...NC has a lot of golf courses! K-peeps love Golf!!! As my choices are limited in this area, this will be my K-spot. Contrary to what Yelp says.... This is a Korean restaurant. Just by the photos, one can tell... I has the seafood noodles and it didn't disappoint. Lots of noodles and lots of seafood. The broth was also really good. As for the pancake and egg rolls... disappointing. The picture of the pancake looked like the one we used to get from our local Korean restaurant but when it came to the table... nothing like it. Lacking in filling and too much dough. There was about an inch and a half from the edge of the pancake that was all dough... the sauce we're used to is vinegary sweet spicy sauce but what we got appear to just be soya sauce and some chili seasoning. Maybe it's their way but we were surprised. The egg rolls were over fried and tasteless. The place appears to be popular with local Koreans. read more
