New Sichuan Restaurant is one of the better places in the Triad if you're looking for authentic Sichuan cuisine. The menu has a great mix of familiar Chinese dishes alongside more traditional regional specialties, and it's clear the restaurant isn't afraid to lean into bold, spicy flavors. The ambiance is cozy. It looks like they turned an old Biscuitville into the dining space, which is quite charming. We ordered quite a few dishes, including the steamed soup dumplings, ox tongue and tripe with chili sauce, Singapore mei fun, intestine with chili pepper, mapo tofu, kung pao chicken, and the intestine noodle. Everything was well prepared, but the standout was how the restaurant balances more "American Chinese" flavors while also staying true to some more traditional chinese flavors as well. The chili-forward dishes had plenty of heat without overpowering the other flavors, and each dish had its own distinct character. The ox tongue and tripe appetizer and the intestine dishes were great options if you're looking to try something a little more traditional. The portions were generous, making it a great place to order several dishes and share with the table. If you're used to American Chinese food, this menu offers a chance to branch out and try something different while still having plenty of familiar options available. If there is a dish I would not order again, it would probably be the soup dumplings. They tasted just like the store bought frozen variety that you can steam at home. We started coming here during the pandemic. It's a family business, and we don't go for the ambiance! They are very willing to do substitutions for vegetarian meals, I even have had tofu Dan Dan noodles there. The spicy dishes are indeed spicy! Some of the portions could be a little bigger, but everything is very tasty. I love their bok choy, which is in many of their dishes. The spicy wontons were room temperature, and I'm not sure if they're supposed to be, but they were the only thing we haven't loved. I decided to try something different that night and ordered the Spicy Double Cooked Pork. Since it had three pepper symbols on the menu, I asked for it to be made mild but it ended up not being spicy at all. It tasted good but I was still hoping for a little bit of a kick. Lately though, the spice levels haven't been very consistent. A couple of times before, my husband ordered the House Special Mei Fun and asked for it to be made a little spicy. When the server brought it to the table, the noodles were bright red and we could immediately tell it wasn't going to be "a little spicy." Sure enough, he had a hard time eating it. He's ordered it the same way before and never had that problem. Maybe a different chef prepared it? I don't know. Been a long time since my original review, so I just wanted to do an update to say that all is well here. Located where it is, I don't get the chance to just swing by often, but it's an excellent place to meet someone when in the mood for delicious Asian goodies in Winston-Salem. I recently got to catch up with a fellow Yelp Elite here (Fred B) and give him some well earned Yelpies awards I had been holding for him... including honors for his 1000th and 2000th lifetime review, and the Yelptime Achievement Award. Congrats Fred. Anyhow, our lunch did not disappoint. I was in the mood for dumplings and a pile of noodles, so we went with the pork soup dumplings and I got a beef and shrimp lo mein. My friend had I believe Dan Dan noodles. Orders were taken promptly, and the food came out in about 20 minutes piping hot and fresh, presented nicely. The dumplings were substantial, a little on the doughy side like I like them, and biting into them was a burst of flavor, broth and tender pork. My lo mein was a very good size portion with plenty of protein, and the same could be said for his Dan Dan noodles. My husband got General Tso's chicken, and while it wasn't spicy, the breading on the chicken was yummy, and the chicken itself was nice and meaty. It's also a huge plus when there aren't any weird chewy pieces of chicken! My other family members had a variety of orders with varying reviews ... mostly good though. Not your average casual Chinese food spot. While the environment is casual, it is certainly more than average. Charming restaurant with kind and attentive service that impressed me given the crushing wave of people that descended on the restaurant at nearly the same time. The restaurant boasts a wealth of fiery authentic Sichuan dishes like spicy Sichuan noodle soups, dry pot, dan dan noodles and ma po tofu but also carries selection of "greatest hits" like lo mein and fried rice. I ordered a bowl of beef spare rib noodle soup, a steamer of pork and crab soup dumplings and a tsing tao for relief in case the "mala" becomes leftfooted in the usual Sichuan dance between fiery burn "la" and tingly numbing "ma." No leftfootedness to be found here! That isn't to say I didn't need relief from that beer though. I have an alright spice tolerance and "two out of three chilies" was hot enough to enjoy the burn while still continuing to eat. The beef was tender, the noodles toothsome and the broth was incredibly hot and rich. The sweetness crab in the soup dumplings provided a wonderful balance to the spicy noodle soup. Though I've been to this excellent Sichuan restaurant dozens of times, I'm still exploring the menu. On my latest visit, I chose the Singapore Mei Fun, an interesting and a very busy dish. This is a stir fried curry based, noodle dish that originated in Hong Kong in the A 1950's, and has become popular in the US and the UK. Thin rice noodles (vermicelli or angel hair) are usually contained in this dish, combined with a sauce that is anchored by yellow curry powder along with soy sauce, oyster sauce, and perhaps Sharon's wine, and combined with several sources of protein (shrimp, chicken, char siu, egg) and a nice amount of crunchy vegetables - carrot, celery, scallions, bean sprouts, Napa cabbage, etc. This is a nice dish, but varies from the traditional versions, and from others I've had in the area, such as at Jade Garden. This is a very mild version, and if there was any curry powder in it, I did not find it. There were some small amount of dried red pepper. The noodles were vermicell rice noodles with very, very little sauce. The protein was limited to shrimp and very thin pieces of marinated chicken - no egg, no char siu. The noodles were nicely cooked with great taste and texture. The tasty vegetables were cabbage, carrot, celery, and scallions. I ordered a side dish of Baby Bok Choy, and folded plenty of that into the noodle mixture along with soy sauce and some healthy dashes of chili oil. With those addition we had ourselves a spicy, crunchy chow mei fun. read more

I have always gotten this place to go and I have loved it, but I went in to sit down this past time and oh man, it's great! Clean atmosphere, wait staff is right to the point and efficient. I had a quick lunch today at New Sichuan, having only one order of their pork soup dumplings. The venue is pretty small but clean and the service was prompt and friendly. The dumplings arrived fast, and piping hot- at first impression, they're small for soup dumplings. You get six, they're not particularly big and also unfortunately they were less "soup dumplings" and more "wet dumplings" like, regular dumplings but juicier. There was no traditional spoonful of broth to pour from each dumpling after biting- maybe a scant teaspoon or so would pour out.. but, the flavor was very good. I'll give it four stars for flavor but the portion size and scant broth make me unlikely to return to this venue for this particular item. read more

I absolutely love New Sichuan. They have some of the most unique and flavorful dishes in Winston, and their food just "seems" more authentic. They do a mean spicy beef noodle soup, and their chicken in garlic sauce (a whole chicken cut into pieces on the bone) is tasty! My friend loves the dan dan noodles, but there's so much here to try that I don't think you could ever get bored! read more

I came here on a Friday as a party of 1. There was a decent crowd, but I was still able to be sat down right away. The place is small so if things do get busy, it will fill up fast. The tables come with paper on top which was I thought was interesting. I ordered a sweet tea, crab rangoon and the sesame chicken. When they brought me my sweet tea, they also brought napkins and chopsticks. The sweet tea has more of a tea flavor and I personally prefer it sweeter to dull the tea flavor more. I placed my order around 12pm and it took less than 5 minutes for my appetizer of crab rangoon to come out. It was fresh and hot. It came with 8 crab rangoons and they were okay. I have had others that I prefer over these ones. My chicken and white rice came out in about 6 minutes. I was very impressed with the timeliness. The chicken was good and I did like the pieces were not large. The white rice was average and I would have preferred sticky rice. I will say that I went with food that I am familiar with and would be open to come back and try something on the menu I have not had before. Stopped by New Sichuan after a shopping trip nearby. It looked busy but they have a booming take out business. We got a seat quickly and the servers very graciously answered all of my questions about the menu. The crab rangoon was the start to an amazing meal all around. Green beans and Bok Choi were so over cooked that they looked brown and not green. Flavorless dishes and over cooked. Even the Xiao Long bao were not good. The beef chow fun was smashed up and like 8 small pieces of beef. Can I say small portions, bad cooking, no flavor, over cooked and we paid $158 for our delivered food before the $10 tip to the driver. Horrible! Not a lot of authentic Chinese food in Winston Salem so this place will do. Pork noddle is pretty good, spicy but good, noodles are not soggy but the pork is kinda dry. How can pork pieces be dry in a broth. Also they don't give a lot of meat either. Dumplings are ok, pretty normal, probably bought it wholesale and steam it for you. I repeatedly find that regardless of the locale the best asian food always resides in former defunct fast food buildings. The building is perfectly nice and clean inside and satisfy my only other requirement for any asian food which is a really good cold beer. I have had the good fortune to try Sichuan cuisine around the US and the World and it kind of knocked me down a peg that this little restaurant off some random highway in Winston-Salem made some of the best soup dumplings and wontons I've ever had in my life. I feel this may be sacrilegious to the dumpling lovers of the world, but they were even better than the ones we get at Din Tai Fung whether New York or the LA locations. My wife and I got Crab Rangoon, Sichuan Wontons, Pork Soup Dumplings and Dan Dan noodles. The only "average" dish was surprisingly the Crab Rangoon since it's such an easy staple at essentially every "Chinese" restaurant. The presentation and fry were perfect, but the filling was a little too soupy and light on flavor, but quite literally everything else was some of the best I've ever had. They even nailed the perfect level of spice that it helped clear my sinuses for the next hour which was much needed not being familiar with the local pollen. Give it a try, pro tip, let the soup dumpling sit in the sauce for 10 seconds or more before eating. They're great, but that just made them next level. read more
