There was technically a "No Tip" option, but the way the situation was handled made it very clear that the other options were what I was expected to choose. My issue is not with tipping. I am happy to tip for good service, and I had already prepared a $20 tip. My issue is transparency and the pressure placed on the customer. If the restaurant has a mandatory or expected 18%, 20%, or 25% gratuity, simply state that clearly on the menu or before the bill is presented. Many restaurants do exactly that, and I have no issue with it. What I don't appreciate is being told that gratuity is optional on the receipt, only to then be made to feel uncomfortable or foolish for choosing to leave what I considered a reasonable tip. A tip should be a customer's choice--not something they are pressured into selecting from increasingly higher percentages on a payment screen. The food was good, but this experience left a very bad impression. Castell's should be upfront about their tipping expectations and respect the customer's choice when gratuity is explicitly stated as optional.
