I worked my way through college at one of the best bakeries in Seattle (McGraw Street Bakery on Queen Anne, where Macrina is now) and so I like to think I know bakeries and baking ingredients. I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. I can spot a true butter cream frosting from 100 yards and a proper danish dough from 50. What a pleasure to gnosh at Kaffeeklatsch. The baked goods were excellent. The items for sale were clearly made there. Each bite spoke to the quality ingredients. I will be returning. I really do love this place and really want to give higher stars, but I unfortunately cannot. PROS: + delicious coffee + delicious pastries and bread + community center CONS - SLOW baristas. I am a barista myself at a high volume coffee shop and am endlessly frustrated with the molasses pace at which the baristas move. I have never seen them make more than one drink at a time. Today there were three people waiting for drinks and eight people in line and it was painful how slow the barista was moving. Drinks shouldn't take more than 2 minutes a piece to make. You can prep multiple cups at a time. You shouldn't be moving slow enough to yawn when it's as busy as it was. read more

Love this place! Great place for parents as they have a little play nook set up for the kids. Just come and enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee and a pastry! They also have some very unique baked goods. There seem to be a lot of German bakeries up here relative to the Bay Area. We ordered a soy cappucino, a pretzel, and something unpronounceable (bienenstich). Cappucino looked like a disaster (overwhipped crazy foam on top) but it tasted delicious. The pretzel was pretty terrible. Not fresh and very hard. The unpronounceable German pastry was excellent though so I forgive them that. But I love all things with pastry cream. Guy who took our order was a hoot. Woo! This place was quite a delight. From the moment you walk in, this café is pretty open and homey. I thought this place would be small like a typical café but was pretty surprised to see how big it was inside. If you're in a craving for some tasty German pastries, make a stop here. It's definitely worth the time. =] Looking at the pastry selection was a little intimidating to me (since I never tried out any German pastries before). However, the staff there is super friendly, and one of the workers gave me a thorough walk through of all the pastries and food they have there. Pretty much anything you eat (bread, sandwiches, pastries/desserts, cheese, etc) are made from scratch and they also have a house brewed ice tea that is just super delicious. For the sake of trying out new food, I got: the cheesecake, fruit blondie, LCW (Lake City Way) cookie, and the buttery square looking pastry (not that great at spelling German pastries). Each had its own distinct flavor and were equally yummy. For the cheesecake, I love the fact that it was light and fluffy, similar to how a sponge cake would taste and it wasn't too sweet! Instead of the usual creamy texture of a cheesecake, this had more of a hint of cheese in its flavoring. For the blondie, this was a tasty treat filled with seasonal fruits that can change from time to time. Sweet but tart, this pastry went well with a dash of whip cream to it. As for the buttery square pastry thing, this was a bit sweeter than the other items I tried but it wasn't too sweet. Buttery with a slight crisp, this pastry reminded me of a croissant mix with a Danish pastry. Finally, the cookie. Hurray chocolate chips and toffee chips in one! This is a pretty safe and tasty choice if you're not feeling adventurous in trying out something new. Overall, this was a great place to stop by for snacking. There's free wifi and a few outlets near the eating area, so if you need to get some work done, this place is pretty nice to do it. As a young person of color, I had one of the worst experiences I've ever had in Seattle. The manager, the baristas, and even the customers were standoffish. I was the only non-white person in that cafe, and they did not let me forget that. The second I walked in, I received glares, dirty looks, and prolonged stares. I was purposely made to feel uncomfortable by the owner and his friend, who had their heads fully turned to stare at me as they talked to each other. They stared at me for minutes on end, making me feel incredibly unsafe. I was planning to stay at the cafe and eat my pastry, but I ran out of there immediately after getting my food. I was shocked to experience such racism from a SEATTLE cafe. I know the owners of this cafe are sour that lim Crow ended in 1964, but welcome to 2022 bigots! read more

I was in the area and I popped in to this bakery that I had wanted to try for a while. I love German food and pastries - I even make some German sweets. I have been to Germany and Austria. But this was very disappointing. 1 1/2 stars. Bit of a depressing atmosphere. Dark and dingy. It was super hot inside (it was about 50 degrees outside). It was dirty and there were crumbs all over the back counter. I noticed the breakfast sandwiches other people have mentioned just sitting on the counter with egg and cheese (which was sweating). Not sure how that passes code with the health department. Even though I had reservations after looking around I took home 4 desserts to try with the hubby. All the names were in German so I won't try to spell them. One was a chocolate marble cake, one was a honey almond dessert, one was similar to an apple turnover, and one was a rhubarb crumble bar. Not one of them tasted fresh. They were dry and quite flavorless. We each took a bite of each and tossed all of them. read more

Coffee is good and parking is easy! I prefer meeting people here rather than studying or reading (it's kid friendly and can get loud with a long line of people). I haven't had their pastries but have picked up a variety of them to go so I can feed coworkers at morning meetings, and the baked goods get rave reviews from them. I think everyone should drop in once and have a leisurely morning here just to try it. (The community bulletin board is also very active / interesting!) read more

I love the food and coffee here, and it's a nice place to come, sit down, and do some noodling on my laptop. It's small, so there's not a whole lot of seating (which is not what I took off a star for) and at times it can get pretty crowded, with a line out the door. This might bother some people, but I'm happy to accept it, because the staff is all incredibly friendly, and seem to try and make it more than just a "give money, get coffee" exchange. What I took the star off for is cleanliness/sanitary issues. I've noticed a lot of flies buzzing around in the pastry case, especially in the summer months. Honestly -- it doesn't bother me much, but I imagine other people as well as the health inspector would have something to say about it. read more

We went here yesterday because, being German, I wanted to check them out. I was very disappointed. What we saw was a business that has stolen an identity for marketing purposes. I didn't expect to be walking into Oktoberfest but I did expect more effort in decor or ambiance. Almost nothing inside the shop was German. In fact quite the opposite. There was local artwork all over the walls and other than a few German words on things and one smoking man on the counter there was nothing. It was not tidy (questionable cleanliness) and the girl behind the counter didn't greet us or smile once. Our pastries were stale. I wouldn't recommend going here. You'll waste your money. read more

I recently moved in to the neighborhood and after smelling the aromas when walking past, knew this was a place that I needed to try. The staff was friendly and answered my questions fully. I ordered a latte and a buttered biscuit with jam. The latte was great - perfect temperature and consistency. The biscuit was also delicious and had a small amount of sugar on top to give it a slightly sweet flavor. Definitely happy to have this spot near by! If I could make one change it would be to add coconut or almond milk as milk alternatives. (They currently have soy/hemp options) read more

Yelp and Maps lead me a little astray and the initial service was a little slow (had to wait for an employee to ring up their lunch first), but the coffee lived up to its reputation and the place is cute. I'm a German from Pennsylvania: this place is awesome. Traditional names for unique pastries, top notch espresso and coffee all in a relaxed family run environment. While some of the names aren't accurate, it's fine because it all looks great. I got a cinnamon roll or as we PA Dutch call it zimtschnecken. These pastries differ from fasnachts because they are baked, not fried, and they are covered in cinnamon butter. While what I'm eating right now is a far cry from the traditional eats of my childhood, who cares: it's delicious! They warm them up upon request- I highly recommend this. My latte is delicious and smooth in keeping with Seattle's reputation for good coffee at most establishments. It's not the best cup of my life, but it's delicious. The storefront is clean and tidy, small pieces of German regalia are scattered about. It feels good:) People are friendly, laughing and smiling even as they interact with customers. Probably the finest establishment in Lake City. Did I mention there are fresh cut flowers on each table? This place rules! read more

My husband and I with our 2 kids went here to meet a friend because it was on parent map as a good place to take your kids. It has the potential to be a great spot. All the right elements: great food, good atmosphere, kids area out of the way. BUT when we got there the line was out of this world, like 15 people deep. My impression was "this must be a great place for all these people to be here" but the line moved so slow it was soon apparent that it was the service was slow. Some of the employees were clearly overwhelmed while others were prioritizing chatting people up over getting orders out. Also, as a parent I was sumwhat annoyed because in the play area there was a couple with no kids and a dog taking up room in an area clearly posted to be "prioritizing families". Lots of families came and went while we were there with out getting to enjoy what they clearly came for, a nice cup of coffee in relative peace while their kids played. No one wants to be a jerk to point this out the the staff, it would have been nice for them to be proactive on the behalf of family's coming to enjoy the spot. read more

Wasn't super impressed, sadly. I had high hopes for this German bakery/coffee shop. The girl taking orders was in no rush when the line started to get long, while no one else working seemed to notice either. The menu is also incredibly disorganized, we couldn't tell what you could order or what came in a loaf. The breakfast sandwich is only available until 9am as well, I find that early-whereas much shops sell breakfast until 11am. Coffee was also a miss :( I thought for the lack of service, at least the drinks would be good. Mocha tasted like the shots were running way too long-burnt. Black coffee is standard. Only part I enjoyed is the layout of the actual shop, it's very open and bright. They also have awesome signs that invite people to sit at your table if you don't need both seats. If you want very average coffee, and hopes of meeting new people I'd definitely come here. But don't expect much else. read more

I recently moved to Lake City and was hoping this would be a nice coffee house since there isn't much more in the neighborhood. Unlike the impression in some older reviews, the person at the counter was very pleasant and enthusiastic. I got one of the German pastries...it was okay but not spectacular by any means. The coffee (cappuccino) was mediocre. (Oh, how I miss the old Woerne's in the U District!) And honestly while it seems they sincerely want to be a neighborhood hub, the atmosphere really wasn't that nice...kind of industrial for lack of a better word, and because the kitchen was in the same room as the seating, it was hot. I am sick to my stomach. I came all the way fromAtlanta to go to this bakery. As I was choosing my pasties, I noticed something crawling on a biscuit in the front of the case. Then saw many somethings on most of the pasties and flying around the case. I said to the counter girl you have bugs in your case to which she replied, " They are just fruit flies, we can't keep them out." I then noticed the case had glass doors on the back and suggested they close them after a good cleaning and debugging. She said the door had been broken for a while. Sadly I cancelled my order, points out that a m item with frosting on top had bugs literally stuck in it, took a snap chat video to send to the health department and left. A cozy spot for a cup of coffee and a slice of Käsekuchen! Around Christmas time, they sell cookie boxes and iced Christmas loaves. The cookie boxes are my favorite, they're a fun mix of cookies, and make wonderful housewarming gifts! We tried their coffee (smooth) and Chai latte (more tea than dairy), which was a nice step away from the $bucks version that I'm so accustomed to. Most of their baked goods are on the savory side (which I like). Their "cheesecake" aka Käsekuchen is delicious and if you get there early, you can order a breakfast sandwich before they sell out. read more

Recently I have had massive cravings for big, thick, German pretzels. I usually go once a year eating one if I happen to be somewhere that serves them but for the last month I've wanted one everyday. Thankfully for my waistline I was able to avoid going to a restaurant every night to eat one and trying to find a bakery that does them well was downright impossible. A Yelp search helped me find the right place. Kaffeeklatch is on the Lake City Way main drag close to Elliot Bay Brewery and the T-Mobile. If you don't know it is there the German flag flying above the door will tip you off. I didn't spend much time in Kaffeeklatch but the space was open with lots of tables and chairs to lounge for hours sipping your coffee or any other drink. I don't drink coffee so I can't give any insight on whether it is worth a try. Their bakery offerings included bread, strudel, cakes, and even cookies. I ordered a pretzel and since I couldn't deny my sweet tooth I ordered a strudel. The service was great and I was out of there in a jiffy. The next day I heated up my pretzel and with a side of honey mustard I went to town. Yum! The pretzel was the perfect proportion of bread and salt. My craving had been satisfied to the max. As for the strudel, I was not entirely impressed. It wasn't bad necessarily. I didn't think it was sweet enough but that is a totally biased opinion because I like my stuff extra sugary. First, the coffee ROCKS! And for a place that bills itself as a gathering place, it missed the mark. It's TOO LOUD to talk; I found it too loud to tolerate,, even alone. Hard surfaces, hard chairs, no friendly surfaces, and a staff that seemed oblivious to the gawd-awful noise they generate . . . I left without drinking more than 2 oz. off coffee. Put in a few armchairs, some fiber rugs, window coverings, hangings. Soften the acoustical assault, folks. And on my visit, pastry offerings seemed skimpy - only a few choices, nothing w/o wheat (hint - many gluten free things are wonderful, tasty, and even German!) A few other choices, even fruit, would be great. And my original review has disappeared. Lame. Best of luck to you, Kaffee peeps. I hope that you do succeed. I hope that you get more reviews that aren't fawning - and I hope that you learn from them. Oh - they don't carry any alternative sweeteners EXCEPT TruVia. Yuck.
