I've seen this brand a lot on campus and I've always been curious about the restaurant so tonight I decided to stop in and try it. When I walked into the spot I realized that the design of the space didn't really advertise what type of food was served. There were no menus or pictures of the food and it was just really confusing. I couldn't make sense of what was offered. The woman at the front desk was very helpful and explained that it was noodles and that you could add different vegetables, meats, etc. When she explained it, I said "it's kind of like an Asian version of chipotle?" to which she and several other employees agreed. However there was one female employee who decided to make a snide remark under her breath about my use of the word "Asian" and insisted that the food was Korean. I would've ignored the comment but she persisted and continued to tell other employees behind the counter that the place was korean which at this point seemed highly inappropriate. As an Asian American I am aware of the complexities of the word Asian and although I generally identify foods according to their cultural context, most Asian specific restaurants in this city are fusions of different cultures--hence my use of Asian as a descriptive category. That experience was so off-putting that I walked out of the store but upon further research I discovered that this establishment is advertised as CHINESE! As someone who has worked in the service industry I am disappointed with my experience. What that female employee did was completely unacceptable. It's one thing to be politically correct but it's another to shame a customer and then be completely wrong about the restaurant you work for. read more

I am writing this because I like Junzi ( I am a regular. Visited at least 10 times) and I hope the owner correct this problem. Tofu Chun bing is too watery and it was very uncomfortable to hold and eat it. Look at the picture. The water came from just one Chun Bing. The watery tofu seems good with rice or noodle bowl but definitely not for Chun bing. I think the tofu should be toasted or dried or, whatever, should be better. read more

Solid 3.5 stars. I really like the concept of this restaurant and, as a noodle fan, I was excited to try it out. I got the knife cut noodles, jaja sauce, and pork. They gave a pretty sizeable portion of noodles and pork, but I felt the skimped on the sauce. It was disappointing because the sauce was actually really flavorful and nice. I felt that the noodles themselves were also a bit on the softer side and I tend to like noodles that have more of a bite to them. They had a good selection of noodle toppings. Came here for quick dinner on a Friday night. Overall it was an enjoyable meal. I ordered a gluten-free rice noodle bowl with Jaja sauce, chicken, matchstick potatoes, sweet potatoes, bean sprouts, green cabbage, pickled daikon, kale, chili oil, chive ash, cilantro, chive ash, bean threads and sweet shallots. Very tasty. The Jaja sauce was both sweet and salty and the chili oil added a nice spicy kick. I love that I could add unlimited toppings and they completed the noodle bowl. I just wish that we could choose two meat options -- half portion of one and half of another, but they don't allow that here. I like the quick, casual feel of Junzi. I agree that it is similar to a Chinese Chipotle. The food servers behind the counter were all very nice except one lady who handled the garnishes. She seemed irritated but I'm sure she just had a long day since it was around 8 pm at night. I recommend coming here if you're craving Chinese food and like noodles. Ever since I found this place two weeks ago I order here almost every other day. As a native Chinese I must say the food is kind of Americanized but (surprisingly) I enjoy it more than many of the authentic ones! The ingredients are fresh, the selection is big, and the flavor is rich without being oily. My favorite sauce is the toasted sesame for bing or tomato egg for noodles. The other sauces are also worth trying but can be a little too salty/sweet for me. I usually start with knife noodles and a random protein, choose two regular veggies, plus a pickled one (celery/daikon), and top it with chili oil,cilantro and scallion. Never go wrong with this combination. This is definitely my go-to spot for a healthy and quick meal. read more

Junzi is conveniently located near Columbia University's main campus and serves up delicious and authentic Chinese noodles. However, the price point is not commensurate with the quality of the food and I surmise that most of the $12 they charge for a small bowl of noodles goes to paying the astronomical rent for the store. One of their offerings is a small carton of pickled cucumbers (holds about 5-6 small pieces) that they charge $2.99 for. I also tried their oolong iced tea and it tasted sour/ had clearly gone bad. I unfortunately had to toss it. To summarize, Junzi serves marked-up Chinese noodles, but is located conveniently near a large college campus. read more

So first - i am not an authority if it is authentic. I would not know an authentic noodle if it hit me in the face. But, the food was good. For those who dont know, it basically a chipotle for noodles. My gripe is that its kind of expensive, I paid $15 for noodles, chicken and some vegetables. Was it good? Yes, but I also think overpriced, especially since it's a take out place. Plus is that they have spacious seating. I would recommend this as a place to get a quick meal inbetween classes or errands. It was inevitable with the fast casual craze but someone finally decided to adapt Chinese noodles and bings (pancakes) to that model. The result is Junzi Kitchen, which is in my opinion, a really good take on Chinese noodles and bing made friendly for the Western palate. The space is trendy and reminiscent of a Chipotle where you have an assembly line of a noodle base (spring noodles, knife noodles or bing), proteins (beef, chicken, pork or tofu), sauces (fermented black bean a/k/a jaja, tomato egg) and a plethora of condiments and veggies to top it off (garlic chile chives are really good). The food is fresh, the tastes are prominent and flavorful and the overall experience is pretty great. The jaja sauce is a very good take on jjajang and the tomato egg sauce is silky and smooth. My favorite toppings were the pickled celery and garlic chile chives. Portions are plentiful and one should not leave hungry. To top it off, they have a tea on tap bar which offers fresh brewed Chinese teas as beverages. The hawthorn tea is the best, being a tad sweet and sour but incredibly refreshing. Service here is also really good. The employees were all patient, knowledgable and incredibly accommodating to all their guests. They took the time to explain the concepts, the flavors and the ins and outs to the uninitiated. Pleasant people really make the difference sometimes. An excellent addition to the Columbia area, big thumbs up. read more

I absolutely love their spicy sesame chicken noodles. It's my go to for lunch in between classes.

As Chinese, I would like to give it a 3.7 Never expected too much from Chinese food "appropriated" in America, because the flavor will be different and will not be as delicious as that at home (but who knows, maybe westerners like this flavor more). Entering this restaurant, it gives you a feeling that you are in Sweetgreen, Dig Inn or anything similar, I wonder if any Chinese Restaurant really serve food like this. Later I realized this is just a kind of western culture that customers can put whatever they want in the food. (so what's the point of having 4 kinds of Chun Bing on the menu? just kidding). After trying the "Chun Bing" (which actually means Spring Pancake in Chinese) here in this restaurant, I have to say, although it is still different from the authentic flavor, it is worth to give it a try. For westerners, this look a lot like a burrito, so in order to get the Asian feeling from it, I would recommend adding the bean sprouts, summer squash and mashed potatoes (not really mashed, we call it potato slices(?)) and don't miss the sweet-bei sauce (which is sweet, and is widely used in Peking Duck Rolls) and Roasted Sesame sauce. Last but not least, eating in America is always not that cheap, with the money for a single Chun Bing here, you might be able to order a lot of Chun Bing in China. (off the point) Just in case you are interested, in China, people order the pancake, and some dishes in the restaurant. Absolutely love this place and how they have evolved over the past few years. Their menu tends to change a bit every 6 months or so with veggies being rotated and different proteins being added. I have eaten Junzi several times and I enjoy the food consistently. The interior is clean and the staff is fast paced, as well as friendly. I almost always order the furu tofu bowl. It is vegan, fresh, and filling for a lunchtime meal. To be honest, sometimes once dinner rolls around on a day I haven't eaten-the Junzi portion won't cut it. But all other times the price is right for the amount you get for lunch, etc. I really just enjoy that there is a fast-casual option near Columbia campus that allows me to get a vegan and healthy meal that is savory and a pleasant experience, even just for takeout. I loveeee noodles so had to try Junzi. It was my first time, I didn't catch the name of the girl who helped me but she was so helpful and friendly! She wears glasses, has blonde or dirty blonde hair (she had a cap on so not sure). Either way she was amazing and recommend me a sauce combo of their sesame sauce and the spicy sesame which was so yummy! Junzi Kitchen opened a few weeks back in my beloved UWS. Having originated by Yale, they decided to make a 2nd location by Columbia to stay Ivy League-oriented. A big, white, open space with a bit of shrubbery, it's a strikingly modern contrast next to the traditional Italian deli look of Milano's next store. The ordering process has gotten much smoother over the past several weeks as these folks get up and running and seems to still being refined. For $12 for a bowl of noodles or $10 for 2 Bings (little Chinese burrito's), the price is decent for a casual dining establishment up here. I've tried a few combo's with the knife noodles (thicker than the spring noodles). Since then, I've settled on doing the knife noodles with beef and jaja vegetable sauce (bean-based). I didn't like the chicken nor the furu sesame--my first order--as much. My fiancee like the furu sesame sauce though, although she pairs it with mushrooms. They really let you load up the bowls with different kinds of veggie toppings (garlic chives, pickled daikon, etc) which is nice. Haven't tried the Bing yet, and probably won't given that the noodles are so good. My fiancee is also a huge fan of the tea bar on tap. Honestly, I'm not a fan of tea but even I like this stuff. The Hawthorne is our collective favorite. They're still working out the kinks, but this is a great option for takeout in the neighborhood. Ordered the knife noodle bowl! I got it with beef and all of the veggies. The ordering style is similar to chipotle where you choose your base, protein, and toppings. Knife noodles are heated up but still have a pretty nice texture - not as good as fresh, but still very good especially for the area. Will definitely be back. read more

The line was long but fast! I got the knife noodles with Jaja sauce, pork, and mushroom. Texture of the noodle was a bit on the softer side, but I really liked it. The Jaja sauce is made with fermented beans so it was more of a savory and sweet sauce. The pork was a little on the dry side. Mushroom was a bit too salty. The food is fine, but I'm writing this review in the hopes that they'll catch it and stop putting plastic utensils in our order. We always request no utensils in the notes of our weekly order, but because they always miss it, we've even called a few times to request that they don't put it in. But it always ends up in our order. I really wish junzi (and other restaurants) would get on board with a more environmentally-friendly approach. We're in a pandemic, on a Saturday evening and our address includes an apartment number (so we have silverware in our home), so the default should just be no plastic unless requested (even when the pandemic is over). It's a win-win - they save money for not using plastic utensils and the "zero-use" plastic doesn't go straight to the landfill. read more

So glad we gave this place another (and third) try Came for lunch, and after trying the Jaja sauce, settled on the sesame knife noodles. The sauce was pretty good, the chili oil was actually kind of spicy. It wasn't amazing, but it was close to campus, quick, and an easy way to fill up on my veggies. Oh and the portions were hefty. For after hours, not sure if they changed the general chu recipe, but the chicken was crispier. The sesame peanut sauce was still AMAZING. Seriously, if they bottled it, I would put it on everything. When I'm not ordering online or in store I try doing a Too Good To Go order for $7ish and you get what ever is left over for the day for a steal. I recently got a pork bowl. A review for the after hours option: I've tried a couple things here from the after hours selection now, so I feel like I can leave a review update. The chicken is probably my favorite thing here, since the sauce that comes with it is surprisingly hot. I wouldn't go so far as to actually say spicy, since pretty much every sauce in America is kind of weak... but this one is not bad. The dumplings are kind of a different story. They taste fine, but are kind of texturally... unsound. I feel like the ones I ate were perhaps steamed for a little bit too long. I also recently tried the fried rice (which was just okay), with an extra piece of "crispy pork". Actually, the pork wasn't crispy at all, though I did think it tasted fine. My friend noted that there was quite a bit of char on the meat, which was true, so perhaps they could take better care of cooking their meats. I also got a juice box, which was kind of expensive. Overall, I don't think after hours is a really big hit in my book, and doesn't change my overall assessment of the restaurant. The biggest problem with the after hours selection is that the food is not warm/ almost cold when its served, unlike the noodles, which are thrown in hot water before being served. I heard about this place as the healthy Chinese food option or even a chipotle for Chinese food. I got a braised beef burrito and it was incredible. It came out to around $9 and had some scallions, cucumber, soy beans. The only thing is that I finished it within a couple of minutes. It was delicious and I think most people would need to order 2 burritos considering there is a lack of side options (ex: some kind of fries on the side would take care of all issues). They did have some bags of chips, cold sliced beef shank, and I think a cucumber salad as additional options but they didn't sound too appealing. This was my first time using Grubhub and I ordered Junzi's mushroom noodle bowl. Pros- delivery was prompt, on time,and food was warm. Large portions, and order was correct. Cons- noodles were stuck together, and there were even uncooked chunks within the meal. Meal was SUPER spicy- I am used to spice, but this was distractedly so. Junzi Kitchen has quick, affordable food options that are delicious and unique. I've been at least a dozen times, and usually go wjth the Tomato Pork or Furu Chicken noodle bowls - both are fantastic. Haven't tried the bing yet, but with the same ingredients as the bowls, I can safely guess they are equally tasty. My only wish is that the place would stock a bigger drink selection, as a lot of their current options are a bit too sugary for my tastes. All in all an excellent restaurant! read more

We popped in here for lunch on a wet snowy day and it hit the spot. Most in our group did custom bowls and that worked well. The only drawback is that the staff expected you to know how it worked and what all the options were. It was loud and hard to hear. The service system is exactly like chipotle and subway, so you don't have to wait for the food to be done. For sure, the food is easy to make by ourselves, but if you are trying to save time and don't mind paying a bit of money, Junzi is a great place for you. Ideal place for a quick lunch, especially for college kids. Other reviews had mentioned the sauce being too sweet, which I worried about. However I had garlic chili sauce with beef and avoided the problem. It was overall delicious especially with some extra chili oil. When I picked up my online order today, the waitress gave me a look and said "you're welcome" after she gave me the bag just because I did not know there is no need to show the confirmation email. You know that kind of "you are welcome". I don't think I deserve this because of being confused for 5 second. The food part wasn't great either. The sauce was not stirred properly. I got all the noodles stuck together like a dough. I would not recommend online ordering as it is not very trustable.
