One evening I did not feel like cooking and something instantly said, "I want junzi!" The noodles are cooked to perfection and they have a variety of bowls to choose from. I had opted to choose to create my own bowl. I added BBQ chicken, sauteed bean sprouts, cabbage, cilantro, hot chili sauce, shredded carrots and it was absolutely divine. I enjoy spicy food and this had the right amount of kick. The BBQ chicken was actually cut into large rustic pieces instead of strips or smaller pieces of chicken (this added to a more authentic feel). The last time I had been there it was about a year ago and we sat inside (the good ol' days) and we ordered a wonderful ice tea. I remember it was a humid, July summer day. I had good expectations when I came in, but I was disappointed. The picture of the beef bone broth noodle soup shows bone marrow. What I got was beef with too much fat, no bone marrow. I felt like I would clog my arteries eating this food! The serving is big with lots of noodles, but they use the cheap part of the beef, and the not bone marrow. Junzi has changed a bit since I last came in spring of 2022... the new menu limits the number of veggies and toppings you can add, and also doesn't have the roasted sweet potatoes anymore, which were honestly the best side available. Now you can only add three veggies, and the options aren't anything special. The griddled tofu portion is at least decent, and still tastes amazing with the sesame sauce, but no longer can I go home with a bowl packet with variety. The servers are kind of skimpy with the toppings too, which is a little sad. I get that with price hikes this was a reasonable thing to do, but I am still a little disappointed. Not for the first time ever, whenever I step foot into Morningside, I'll always huff under my breath that the students don't know how good they have it in terms of food options. Back in my day, the only mildly tolerable Chinese options available were Ollies (fine if you were okay with a sodium bellyache for the next few hours and chewing on questionable meat gristle) and Columbia Cottage (also fine if you desperately needed a carafe of watered down red wine). Now they have Junzi, which is essentially Chipotle-style fast casual meets traditional Chinese home-cooking. I was extremely skeptical but it has won me over, in part because of how tasty it is when you are really homesick. Also, I do admire how they offer the humble bing as an option; the many different flavors of Lays; and the four kinds of tea they got on tap. And, of course, tea eggs. I am a huge fan of the bing options, though they are structurally weak (as compared to the much heftier tortilla), extremely messy and you should not try to undertake eating one in front of anyone whose opinion you fear. Whatever bite you take will unleash and pull out, shred by shred, whatever else they have packed in there. Best consumed in the sanctity of your own apartment or dorm room. My absolute favorite thing here is the tomato/egg sauce, which they insist on calling a garnish. This is wonderful on top of anything but actually goes best with some rice and the spicy tofu. I could eat a container of it on its own. I do have to speak up against kale though. I like kale and all of its fibrous qualities and I get why they had to offer it as an option but they give you a little too much of it and ends up getting in the way of other, better things. Other things you should get instead of kale: the pickled daikon, long beans, and bean sprouts. Don't sleep on the knife cut noodles, either. So chewy and fun to eat, it's the perfect vehicle. I went to Junzi Kitchen for lunch recently. I got their chicken and kale bing, which is basically their version of a wrap. Junzi kitchen is one of many restaurants using the Chipotle model of having a pre-set menu item with different sauces and toppings to choose from. The bing I ordered was tasty and loaded with toppings. Overall, the place is spacious and the service is friendly. But if I had to choose I think I would go with Chapati House down on 123rd Street in terms of a similar item type with the same price. You get more value with Chapati House. Love the concept and super glad they have a chipotle style take on asian food! I'm a huge fan of knife cut noodles and I'm glad they offer that here and it's freshly cooked! I pair it with the furu sesame sauce which is sweet and nutty. I really like their new firecracker chicken because it has a little bit of a spicy kick to it, the chicken is never dried out and they do give you a good amount of chicken. Then you can really customize whatever veggies you'd like, ranging from beansprouts, buddha's palm, cabbage, kale, pickled daikon. I've been wanting to try Junzi since seeing the space under construction a few months ago, and when I finally got the chance to it didn't disappoint! It's a bit too pricey, oily, and sauce-heavy for me personally to eat at regularly, but if I were still a student here I could definitely see Junzi becoming part of my Sweetgreen/Dig Inn/tired of John Jay rotation. 3.5/5 food, rounded up for amazingly friendly and happy staff (I've been told that portion sizes aren't consistent by a friend who has placed the same order on several different occasions to yield different results. So I might have just come on a good day.) You can choose between a bing ($8.50 for one or ~$14 for two after tax; it's wrapped around fillings kind of like a burrito, with regular and whole wheat options) and a noodle bowl (~$12.50 after tax; choice of wide knife noodles or thin spring noodles). They come with one serving of protein (chicken, pork, beef, tofu, or mushroom) but you can get half of one kind and half another at no additional cost (it's +$3 for an additional serving for two bings or noodle bowl, or +$1.50 for one bing). Vegetables and toppings are fully customizable and you can add as many as you want. I got a bing, and the servers were so so friendly and helpful when giving recommendations: - half chicken and half pork for protein. They also said half chicken half mushroom is really good! - roasted sesame and garlic chili for sauce - the garlic chili has Sichuan peppercorns and they warned me it was spicy but I thought it was actually pretty mild I ended up getting half of the pork & chives combo and half of the chicken & kale combo. I really liked the half pork and half chicken, as the pork was fairly fatty and the chicken was a bit too dry. The pickled daikon (part of the pork & chive combo) was really good, probably my favorite ingredient. The bing was really stuffed and had a lot of sauce/oil pooling around on the bottom so I used a fork and knife instead of eating it burrito style, though I think this might have been an anomaly as the bing was so large that the lid on the box wouldn't shut. The bing itself was a little tough and dry, and I liked the fillings a lot more. I tried a bit of my friend's noodle bowl and I thought the knife noodles were ok - not very chewy/stretchy but not bad. The jaja sauce was mostly salty and just barely spicy. If I come again I plan to stick to the bings. I don't think one bing or one noodle bowl is enough for a meal if you're hungry, but two bings are too much; my friend and I weren't very hungry when we came in so the portions were good for a light meal. It definitely seems like Junzi is in the same category as Dig Inn and not so much Chipotle. The tea on tap is such a cute concept, though I didn't try any. I also love the stickers that they use to indicate the protein - there are cute pig and chicken and cow faces (and a cube for tofu lol) The space is really well-lit and open and clean. There's a lot of seating - some tables for two, some larger tables, and a counter with stools. It wasn't very crowded when I went since the semester hasn't started yet, but I'm sure it will be soon. My main complaint is actually not about the food - right now they have glass recycling but I wish there were plastic recycling and/or compost as well. Junzi Kitchen, I need you to update your food containers. If I was only grading the food, I would give you a 5 star review. Tonight is the second time, I come in to order take-out and it is the second time that I have a leaking container. The first time luckily, it didn't break the bag and I was able to hold the container in my hand for the remainder of my commute. Tonight, I mentioned this experience to the cashier and she placed a rubber band, and I thought that would suffice. On my way home, I noticed that the bing was leaking. I first noticed that there was a grease hole in my bag. So I took the bing and wrapped the paper bag around it to avoid it from further spilling. When I got out of my cab ride only a 5 minute ride, it had leaked all over my coat. I have two massive grease stains that I worry won't come off. This should have never happened. I have lost my appetite as a result of the utter frustration that I feel. Are you going to refund me the cost of taking my winter coat to the cleaners? I love junzi because it's close to campus, it's quick and it tastes great. Not a big fan of the noodle bowls, but I love the wraps which are called bing here. Noodle bowls are larger, but in my opinion, not as flavorful as the bing. Always get the bings. My favorite is the junzi after hours menu that they have late night thurs-sat. Everything on the menu is worth a try. My go to's are the fried chicken and the breakfast bing. The little juice box cocktails are cute. I would give five stars just for the junzi after hours menu. This review is mainly for their late night menu. I don't come here too often, and probably more often than not for the weekend late nights. The restaurant, in its normal operating hours, is a Chipotle-style Chinese restaurant that serves either noodles or bing (Chinese bread), with a number of meats and vegetables that vary seasonally. Overall, the selections, especially the vegetables, are quite authentically Northern Chinese. While I'm not a huge fan of the sauces, I respect their take on mixing traditional aspects with a modern twist. Now on Thursday-Saturday nights, this place essentially turns into a pub. It has street-style food, Chinese beers, and juice-box cocktails. The whole concept is quite fun. My favorite is probably the fried chicken, which is quite spicy. The dumplings are also good. My main problem is the price. If is Chipotle-style, but about 30-40% higher in price on average. There is a charge for extra noodles (though not for the vegetables, take note). And contrary to probably most reviews here, I don't like the sauces. The jaja sauce is a close cousin to the traditional zhajiang (炸酱), and I find their version a bit too salty. The tomato and egg sauce, which is a real classic, had chunky pieces of eggs (liquid eggs?), and too sour to the version that I'm used to. Overall, I'm certain the place appeals to many people, just not that much to me. A decent option for students given its proximity to the Columbia campus, especially if you're in a hurry. read more
