Good enough food to overcome a fairly bad experience. Service was pretty rude (and inattentive when trying to change the order). One of those Chipotle-style "build a bowl" places, but they were out of so many things it was almost amusing. Was able to cobble together a tofu noodle bowl, but no mapo tofu, no chili crisp, no ginger sauce. Hard to tell what was available, you just had to keep trying while the woman making our food told us no. Can't see myself going back despite not minding the meal. read more

Junzi is one of the few places I looooove getting food from. I make excuses to myself why I shouldn't pickup dinner from my college dining hall just to grab a rice bowl from Junzi! I get their custom rice bowls which allows to pick and choose the add-ons, which is super convenient for me as I pick gluten-free options for some of the add-ons. They have a variety of meat options but my absolute favorites are the Green Pepper Beef and the Cantonese BBQ Chicken. They also have spicy options like Firecracker Chicken (*drooling emoji*) and Vegan options, such as griddled tofu. Another thing is their proportions are huge. Whenever I get a bowl, I barely finish half of it so I end up eating it for my second meal too. Their staff is super friendly and as a matter of fact, I had a chance to meet the owners of the restaurant too! The sweetest people ever! Coincidentally, I made my first order from Junzi on their anniversary! I usually place my orders via UberEats, but I found out that customers can also place orders through Junzi's website which is much convenient and the preparation + delivery takes less than 30 minutes to Yale. I wanted to like junzi, especially since I heard they served Juan bing. However they appeared to have taken the bing off the menu. I ordered the tomato flavored thick noodles with meatball and was not super impressed. They did not have the meatball available so I went with the tofu. It did not have a lot of flavor, although I did like the base tomato flavor. It just didn't carry through the whole dish. The consistency of the noodle was the best part of the dish. I like knife cut noodles for being thick and hearty. I also tried the beef and pepper rice. I liked that this was more flavorful but some of the pieces of beef was burnt. I liked the carrots and cilantro for adding depth to the dish. It wasn't anything special though. read more

I was skeptical but quickly amazed. Impressed might be an understatement. As you walk in you're greeted by a table that gives directions for ordering (Online through their website). First time ordering get 20% off. 3 categories; Noodles bowl, rice bowl, and salad bowl. My order? Noodle bowl & Rice bowl. What I chose is in the pics. Negatives: chicken was on the dry side, noodles could use a bit more sauce also on the dry side. I had to add sesame oil & dumpling sauce from my pantry. Positives: OMG! The size could literally feed 2 people (that was impressive #1!) But then again I did order extra knife noodles and extra chicken. Regardless, I'm still impressed. The prices keep going up, but worth it for the flavor and bouncy noodles when there's a deal on Snackpass. I'm obsessed with the Furu Tofu on knife noodles and I get it every single time with as many delicious vegetables as I can! Thanks for having superb vegan options! Updated to add that --- Junzi expanded their vegan options and now have rice bowls which imo are better than the noodles (!). Simple, fast, and relatively healthy! We stopped by for a light and healthy lunch. Each of us ordered one mushroom and yam bing. Small, but a perfect lunch meal in preparation for a big dinner. Savory and sweet with a sauce that tasted similar to hoisin sauce (one of my favorites). We also got the iced gunpowder rose tea, which is pretty and pretty tasty. Lightly sweetened, just enough. The texture was great. They actually cook the noodle as you order it so it's nice and hot. Noodle was not soggy. Knife noodle is thicker, which I prefer. I chose the furu sesame as my base sauce. It tastes like it had peanut butter in it. I thought the beef topping was a little gamey. It did not taste dry but it looked like it was sitting around for a bit. The portion size to price ratios here are unbalanced and downright in bad taste. If you order a bowl with grilled tofu, you get a full bowl of rice and 4-5 pieces of tofu. The chinese broccoli potion was around 3 pieces for a 'topping'. If you want to pay $15 for a bowl of rice, this is your place. For me, I probably won't return. read more

I'm glad I had the opportunity to come back and have another go at Junzi. I think the trick is to get the right stuff, and the staff working here were more attentive than those whom I described in my first review. I recommend the knife noodles all the way. The sesame sauce is a definite winner. If you're going for non-meat, combine the mushrooms and tofu for a winning combination. If I could describe Junzi Kitchen in a few words, it would be "Chinese Chipotle with noodles." Junzi is following in the footsteps of a couple other places in New Haven (Pitaziki- Mediterranean Chipotle and Tikkaway- Indian Chipotle) that are imitating Chipotle's fast, casual, high end cuisine with great success. At Junzi, you have a choice of noodle (knife vs spring), protein (the usual proteins plus mushroom or tofu), sauce (jaja, furu sesame, or tomato/egg), vegetables and garnish. Some ingredients may be seasonal, but all are delicious. I made my own noodle bowl with knife noodles, furu sesame sauce, beef + mushroom, and a LOT of vegetables. My bowl was huge! I will also add that the bings are delicious. I ordered the pork and wild cabbage bing, which was a tad spicy, but perfect for my palate. One bowl of noodles and a bing was plenty for me, but you could also order two bings for a pretty sizable meal (2 bings is approximately 1 smallish Chipotle burrito). My only complaint is that the edges of the bings were a bit dry, but other than that, the meal was delicious. How do you review a place like this? To sum it up, it is an Asian version of Chipotle. You choose either a noodle bowl or 1-2 Bings(wraps), then you pick, your protein, veggies, etc... But how do you judge for flavor when you choose everything that goes in what you order? Whether it comes out good, great, or disgusting depends on what you have put together. So I guess this rating is based on my experience. When a place is not busy and there are several workers standing around, you should at least acknowledge your customer. Having never been here, I guess I'll figure this process out on my own. Like what is a bing? How does this work? What are my choices? I almost walked out, but I was on my lunch break and didn't have time to go anywhere else. "So what is this sauce?" "I don't know? Do you want a taste" How do you not know what you are serving? How do you not know what goes well with what? I've never eaten here, and you can't recommend anything? There were things that I either didn't know what they were or what they tasted like. I just had this place for lunch and it was just ok. Everything was under seasoned and they go pretty light on the sauce and toppings. It's not particularily flavorful, but it's not awful. One thing that weirded me out is that the noodles were stuck together in a large clump, so don't believe they were tossed or cooked with the sauce. Just kind of meh. read more

What a clever concept for a fast Asian food joint. I've been to others like this but this one has a fun and modern interior, the staff are friendly and they combine both east and west cuisine. I'm generally a fan of Junzi's noodle dishes and have been here many times. Today I decided to try the Mandarin Chicken Salad - don't. It's a few pieces of chicken, a tablepoon of canned mandarin oranges, some cabbage and few dry noodles on a HUGE bed of lettuce. And today they didn't have any dressing, so I paid $13 for the above. Junzi opened during my freshman year, and I'm so happy how much the brand has grown since then (beyond New Haven, they have locations at Columbia University, Greenwich Village, and an upcoming one at Bryant Park). I met the chef, Lucas Sin, at an AACC fried rice cooking class, and he's an incredibly talented and humble guy. Junzi serves northern Chinese-style bings and noodle bowls, and the After Hours menu on Friday-Saturday late nights featuring mala noodles, rice bowls, and scallion bings. Service is extremely efficient. You place your order of either bing(s) or noodle bowl, choice of protein, sides, and sauce. I get a bing if I'm in a rush, but the noodle bowl is always my go-to choice. My humble order is usually knife noodles in tomato-egg sauce, beef, bean sprouts, literally almost all of the side-dishes (favorites include daikon, seasonal long beans, chive ash, shrimp salt), and garlic chili. Be sure to mix up your bowl before eating! I'm a fan of the interior minimalistic design with white walls featuring sketches of food and wooden furniture. It's a very small store, though, and it can probably seat less than a dozen people if completely full. The only minor complaint that I have with Junzi is the price. I'm a bit spoiled, since in hindsight their opening year prices were ridiculously cheap, but they are still at a premium compared to other fast-casual restaurants. Nonetheless, that doesn't deter me from coming to Junzi and regularly ordering something to eat! If you're a really dedicated eater, they also offer Junzi Dining Passes and frequent social media contests for Noodle Combo Cards. Lastly, I haven't had their After Hours menu in a long time. When Lucas used to live in New Haven, he came up with a rotational menu, and some of my favorites aren't featured on the standardized one anymore. After hearing fairly rave reviews from my classmates, I decided to check out Junzi Kitchen. Being vegan, I ordered the Chilled Sesame Noodles with Tofu. The amount of tofu wasn't nearly enough for even a snack and I had to have a second lunch to feel full. The sesame sauce was very watery and collected at the bottom of the bowl leaving the noodles flavorless. This was especially unfortunate since basically the entire meal was noodles with minimal protein and vegetables. Spice and flavor in general was just not there. My friend built her own bowl which I'd recommend doing as you can add more of what you want but she also complained of the lack of flavor. Probably not the best place for vegetarians or vegans.
