This is my favorite brunch place in New Haven by far! We come here often and it is right across the street from where we used to live. My husband and I always get the same thing and split it as it is enough for 2. The blueberry pancakes are delicious! Omelettes yummy (well seasoned) - we always add mushrooms, ground impossible sausage and spinach. I usually get a chai latte or seasonal latte and hubby gets the lavender lemonade. Service is fast and the energy is lively and although always busy, they never rush you out. We also love the neighborhood and always run into friends here, it has an energy of "it's the place to be". read more

Poppy's is a solid spot when you're in need of a remote work setup or a casual meet-up! While they're closed on Mondays, the space is welcoming the rest of the week. I'm here often enough to declare their cappuccinos consistently nice and strong - it's my go-to every time. The WiFi is strong, and the layout offers plenty of single seats, perfect for getting a few hours of work done. I've even spotted someone confidently taking a Zoom call here, though be warned: it's not the quietest café. Between the hard surfaces and its popularity as a networking hub for the Gen X crowd, it can get a little lively. As for the breakfast and lunch menu... it's fine, but I'd give the edge to Fussy's if you're looking for less oily, more creative options. (Poppy's food isn't bad, just not my top pick.) All in all, Poppy's is a dependable spot to caffeinate and get-work-done, and given some signage inside it sounds like they're opening up a second location! read more

So glad we finally got to try Poppys. As a note for any visitors, it is entirely street parking and there tends to be a wait for tables. You order at the front desk and they seat you. We enjoyed our time at Poppys; it is clearly a New Haven hot spot with their variety of drinks and food! Everything was delicious; the space is big but ultimately they keep it simple. I did brunch at Poppy's back in Oct 2022 when they first opened and it was pretty decent. Ended up going back recently for a quick brunch on a Sunday with a friend while I was in town. There is plenty of street parking and you don't need a reservation. I got there first, grabbed a table and got in line for my food. The young man behind the counter seemed a bit aloof and not really present. He was tepid and barely seemed interested in answering my questions. Nonetheless, I ordered and sat down. A few minutes later, a server brought out my food and she had a similar disposition as the young man behind the counter. I had to ask for syrup and a few other things. Her service differed from the other server who was so helpful and nice to my friend when she got there. The food also wasn't that great so the experience was quite bleh. read more

Poppy's Coffee & Kitchen is a breakfast restaurant and coffee roastery that opened in New Haven, Connecticut in June 2022. It was founded by David Oricchio. A native of Fairfield, Oricchio had dreams and aspirations for becoming a chef. He attended college in Boston and later entered the food and service industry. After moving to New Haven in 2013, Oricchio got a job at Lulu's Coffe Shop and worked as a barista. Two years later, Lulu's owner Lulu de Carrone sold the business to Oricchio. He changed the name of the business to East Rock Coffee and revamped the menu and coffee program while remaining true to Lulu's original vision. Although East Rock Coffee continues to do well, Oricchio sought to start a new venture with a larger space and new culinary ideas. Named "Poppy's", the new venture is inspired by Oricchio's love for classic 1950s diner fare. My family and I recently went to Poppy's for the first time. We met up with some friends for a weekend brunch. Our older son had the "Buttermilk Pancakes" (with real maple syrup and macerated berries). He was very happy with them; he enjoyed every bite. My wife had the "Avocado Toast" (chile crisp, pickled onion, herbs, avocado on multigrain and poached eggs) and she said that it was out of this world! The avocado was perfectly ripened and the eggs were nice and runny. I decided to order the special of the day: "Blueberry French Toast" (stuffed with blueberry mascarpone cream cheese, topped with fresh fruit and fresh blueberry compote). It may just have been the best French Toast I've ever eaten; the fruit was so fresh and the filling was so creamy! We also ordered a delicious plate of "Homefries" for the table to share. The whole place was filled with an amazing aroma of fresh roasted coffee, so I ordered the "Dark Chocolate Peppermint Latte" which was almost too pretty to drink (but I'm glad that I did!) Poppy's is the real deal. They serve a simple and classic menu, not $25 plates of over the top Instagram food. We really enjoyed the BECA, Eggs Benny, and home fries. I appreciate that they already had Cholula hot sauce at every table, so I don't have to flag someone down to request it. And as a sister business to East Rock Coffee, the coffee drinks are great too! Sweet brunch dishes are not my preference, but they serve some verrryyy thick pancakes for those that are interested. Typical to a more city environment Poppy's only has on the street parking. We took a seat outside, we were brought menus, then were told to order at the counter. The food was phenomenal. Our food came with a salad that was the only disappointing part of the experience. My food came with toast and a small side of potatoes. My husband had only the side salad which was just greens (no tomato, no cucumbers, or dressing). The omelette was a nice portion. The ingredients so fresh and flavorful. I dont know what seasoning was used on the breakfast potatoes was delicious. The potatoes were cooked so they were soft which Is the way I like them, with a nice crisp outside. The multi grain toast I dont know what brand, or where the toast was made I wanted more of it! For the 1st time I tried a Vietnamese Iced Coffee it was strong, but sweet not bitter. I wanted to order another to go but Im diabetic so I could not have a second one. My husband's meal was the eggs benny. He really wanted his benny to be florentine however the accompanying options were smoked salmon, avocado, and bacon. I used to like Poppy's and be a regular. But it has gone downhill lately. The service has been cold at best, and the new menu is quite dull. I ordered a salad with lentils, feta and beets and essentially got a bowl of bagged mixed greens with 3 lentils, 3 cubes of beets, 3 crumbs of feta. That's not a meal and definitely not worth 14 dollars. I don't think I will be back. read more

Delicious food in an airy bright clean feeling space. The former grocery store is unrecognizable and the renovation matches the food wonderfully. Takes a minute to figure out how to order (at the counter, take a number to your table) but it's a nice feature that there is no waiting for the check once you're finished. We stopped by for brunch today and were greeted with a packed restaurant and chose outdoor seating though it was a little chilly. It was a little chaotic to find someone and ask to be seated, but after that we were met with good service. The options for food and drinks were standard, though my sweet tooth would always prefer a sweeter option like French toast or waffles in addition to the pancakes. The buttermilk pancakes were FANTASTIC. SO FLUFFY. I've never had such amazing pancakes in New Haven. The Eggs Benny had over cooked eggs though they tasted good on the English muffin, but the portion size was small and only came with a side of arugula. Overall, we would eat here again but hoping for more menu options soon! read more

I am updating this review to clarify my claim of the lack of vegan options: On the final day of my review I was told that the Avocado Toast was not and could not be made vegan because of eggs/butter in the bread itself. As the owner has clarified what their vegan options are in their public reply, I have added a star, with a general food service caveat that if I am told a food that seemingly is vegan is actually not vegan, then I am inclined to believe that no vegan options exist. I am happy these confirmed options exist, with more on the way for lunch service. Reviews are snapshots in time, so what happens on one day isn't necessarily what exists all the time, which is why I go to an establishment multiple times before reviewing it, unless the food was so egregious that there is no point in giving them another chance. I stand by my review that the food is probably better than the coffee, however, Poppy's does not (and never did) fall into the egregious category. If you are on the western side of East Rock and happen to pass by, feel free to stop by, I would not go out of my way to come here. read more

It's official, I'm obsessed with Poppy's! I have food allergies (egg and dairy being the main ones) and I was excited to see that I had options. The vegan coconut and peach porridge and açaí bowl are my go to favorites and if I'm extra hungry, I'll get a side of potato's - perfect! My husband got the egg sandwich, BECA, and said it's his new favorite! Also, I am no coffee expert but when I do go out for breakfast, I like my coffee (just get drip/black coffee - nothing fancy) to feel like "going out to eat/special coffee!" My second but not last trip to Poppy's. I love a delicious all day breakfast option. You can't take a table till you order. Service was fast and pleasant. Don't worry if it looks like you might not have an indoor seat because they are so quick to bus tables there may be one ready by the time you've placed your order. Delicious food, 5 stars. Really a little understated (no super fancy dishes) but superb quality and preparation. They have a couple good vegan options. One of the best breakfast spots in New Haven, I think. Coffee is definitely above average, maybe not the best place for coffee in the whole city but it's very good. I visited this place for brunch over the weekend after stopping by the Peabody Museum. It had a decent crowd, which we took as a good sign. However, the ordering process was a bit confusing. My party and I stood around waiting to be seated until we saw another couple grab menus from a table and go to the register. We eventually followed their lead. Food - 3/5 We ordered the blueberry pancakes and an omelet with onions, ham, and cheddar. The pancakes were a generous portion, but unfortunately, they were overcooked and bordering on burnt. Additionally, despite asking for butter on the side, it came slathered on top. The omelet, while having decent flavor, was quite small in size. Drinks - 2/5 They weren't serving any cold drinks, which was quite disappointing on a sweltering July afternoon. The self-serve water lacked ice and was as warm as the non-airconditioned restaurant. I bump them a star though they serve my favorite brand of hot tea, Harney and Sons, which would have been more enjoyable had it not been 90 degrees outside. Note: they do not sell soda. Service - 1/5 The service was definitely lacking. The prepayment at the register might contribute to the indifference, but having someone dump the plates on the table without a smile or eye contact was very off-putting. It certainly didn't feel worth the 25% tip we left. Overall There are much better breakfast places in the city, and we will not be back. read more

This place is not very friendly to vegans. The menu is not clearly labeled, with a few options labeled VG, which could mean vegetarian OR vegan (usually restaurants distinguish by saying VG for vegetarian and V for vegan). Just to be sure, I asked if the avocado toast was vegan - it was listed as such on the paper menu (eggs not included), but not the online one (eggs included). The waiter said yes, it was vegan. But sure enough, the toast came with eggs on top. My latte also came with a different plant milk than I had ordered, which was no big deal, but with two parts of the order incorrect I sure hope that my side of Impossible sausage was not real meat. read more

Poppy's could serve the worst coffee that I have ever tasted and I would still ardently support it because I'm so ecstatic that there is finally a coffee shop on the long neglected region of Whitney Ave that I walk down on the way to work. Luckily, that is not the case. I ordered an iced americano with golden blend espresso. I've never tried an americano with a medium roast espresso, and I was pleasantly surprised by the complexity of the flavor profile. The shots were pulled well and weren't overly diluted. The staff members that I interacted with were super cool and helpful. I asked about vegan options because, as per Steph's earlier review, it didn't seem as though there were as many vegan choices as one would expect. I was told that both the açaí bowl (made with oat milk) and the coconut quinoa porridge are entirely vegan, and there are plans to expand the range of vegan options when Poppy's begins serving brunch and lunch soon. I didn't try any food on this trip, but the dishes and pastries that other patrons had ordered all looked well-prepared and enjoyable. I appreciate that Poppy's - and sister cafe East Rock Coffee Shop, for that matter - serve and store their baked goods without any plastic wrap. Individually wrapped pastries and bakery items are a pet peeve of mine, both from an environmental perspective and a culinary perspective because wrappings like plastic wrap trap moisture and tend to make things soggy (especially in this humidity). It's worth noting that Poppy's is located on a fairly highly trafficked stretch of Whitney, which means that it is convenient to access but the ambience of the cute outdoor tables can sometimes be interrupted by the sounds of passing vehicles (if you're local you know that this translates to honking, loud exhausts, backfiring, and the other sounds associated with the brigade of ATVs and motorbikes that occasionally patrol New Haven). The frequency of these sounds is entirely predictable based on the time of day, though this point will be particularly salient over the next few weeks due to the insane amount of road work that is inhibiting the flow of traffic for about four blocks of Whitney. Of course none of this is the fault of Poppy's and thus had no bearing on my rating, just something to keep in mind to manage expectations. Overall, I had an excellent experience here and look forward to returning for brunch and what is likely to be a concerning quantity of caffeination trips. read more
