We were staying in Hamden for the weekend and since we don't know the area, did a quick search and found a couple of options. Brian stone was closer but I skipped over it based on the rating and the pictures of the decor. We drove a little farther to State street Cafe and it was too busy, so we drove to Brown Stone. Stepping in reminded me of "The Pantry" in LA. A little run down, stuck in time with the decor, but a recognized local favorite and food go to for those that know. Brown Stone had the same vibe and feel as soon as we went In. I loved seeing the locals and the staff immediately greeted us and attended to us, bringing some coffee. Breakfast items are relatively simple, nothing fancy here, nor were we looking for it. I just wanted a good meal. I ordered the avocado and ham omelette special and my wife the egg and Belgian waffle. Breakfast came out quick, hot, and good! I was pleasantly surprised, and should not have been so judgy. After seeing the long lines at State Street (I love State Street Cafe but the waits sometimes are wild; food is amazing though), we were wondering where to get some brunch, and en route to finding such a place, we popped into this hidden gem. Service is professional and welcoming. I like that you can seat yourself as it frees up the waitresses' time. Food was delish and came out wicked fast after ordered. I ordered the country eggs Bennie that was on their specials menu, and my husband got the breakfast scrambler, and sides of toast and a croissant, respectively. For a Saturday morning at 10am, it was busy but not insanely so. We enjoyed the food and diner feel and we'll for sure be back! This place is great! We have eaten here probably 15 times during the past 2 years of living in Hamden. The ladies who work here are kind and efficient. We regularly get their omelets and eggs benedict. I like their hazelnut coffee as well. The service is great and you seat yourselves. Our waitress was quick and attentive. If I had to wait 45 mins to an hour, I would definitely do that. Everything was cooked well and I will point out two things; the eggs were cooked the way I ordered them and that says a lot. Next, you can kind of see the French toast size width wise. Brown Stone is...ok. There is a lot of hype since the location has been within the community for so long. Don't get me wrong, that's great! They definitely have their normals and generations of customers who come here, and it is hard to find a restaurant with such staying power over the years...especially post-recession. The waitress overcharged me by $5 to top it off she was nasty and rude. We've only been here once and it was back in January on a Sunday morning, but it was nothing to brag about. I'd heard this place was a must-visit though I can't really understand why after our first attempt. The food wasn't anything special, just eggs and toast and the usual breakfast items you'd find at a Denny's or IHOP with the same taste but it was probably more expensive for us there than at the chain places. The service was alright; it wasn't overly busy but we were kind of hurried out which is typical from breakfast places on the weekends, I'm sure, but it didn't help the experience at all. The waitresses have always been very cheerful and helpful, regardless of the hour you go. It's small, so don't bring a crowd over 4 people. (Only small booths, a bar top, and tables for two available) The food is typical diner food. We have only been there for breakfast and we've never been disappointed. Bacon, egg and cheese will run you a little less than $4, which is the norm for the area. Great corn beef hash. Not a huge fan of the home fries - they are sliced potatoes, and I prefer crispier, smaller bites - but there are many other options for sides.
