We moved to the area six months ago and I always passed this place by in my search for sushi, up in Hamden. Today, I craved a BLT so decided after reading reviews here to go. The minute I walked in I felt welcomed. I sat at the lunch counter and was given my requested water. The waiter gave me a menu and told me to take my time. I looked at the menu just to see if something else would catch my eye. Then I ordered my BLT on whole wheat. It could not have been more than three minutes later, out comes my lunch with a pickle! I love sandwiches with pickles because it reminds me of lunch counters of yore. Many years ago, most people out for lunch or even at home ate a sandwich for lunch and maybe a piece of fruit. I have been a loyal customer of this establishment for probably 30 years but recently I have decided to no longer use this establishment because there's a young kid in there and he's very rude. I asked for no Styrofoam and he yelled at me about being too busy to worry about that shit. And since then every time I go in there I end up getting Styrofoam anyway... That may not be a big deal to other people but I'm a paying customer and I don't like to use Styrofoam because it's very bad for the environment. On a business conference trip, I looked around for a breakfast place near the hotel that I could sit and eat at before the 8:00am start. From the options presented, Three Brothers Diner seemed most ideal. After being dropped off by a Lyft driver, I went inside to be warmly greeted by the staff. It helped to see a couple of regulars at the bar, drinking their coffee and eating breakfast, to know that this is a locals' spot. I ordered the "Meat Lovers Omelette" and coffee. Certainly it was not the best omelette of my life. The coffee wasn't the best coffee in the world. What I did get, however, is warm and professional service - the kind you can only find in a local family restaurant like this one that can make you feel like you're one of the regulars even though you're from 3,000 miles away. The food was good. It wasn't great, and it wasn't horrible. The service was excellent. The recent remodel made the place look and feel clean. The news on the TV, regulars complaining away about their work, and the waitress talking about her grandsons filled my ambiance as I ate my breakfast. it was a pleasant experience. Every morning my two roommates and I would wake up in dread and anticipation of yet another twelve-hour work day selling educational books door-to-door in Connecticut. None of us had any business being there: one of my roommates and I were students at Berkeley, and the third was from the University of Central Florida. For instance, emulating the old-timers in the diner we would insist on sitting in the same booth every day. We would harmonize to the Alphabet song, and idiotically blurt out the opening to "2001: Space Odyssey" while waiting for our food. And the food was reassuringly predictable. I always had one egg sunny-side up, hash browns, and wheat toast. My roommate Rupert always had one egg over easy, hash browns, and wheat toast. David had the short stack drenched in syrup and mashed into little bits, and an egg sandwich. Monday to Saturday, for ten weeks straight. Once we went there in the evening for dinner, expecting more of the same gray weariness that pervaded the space in the mornings. As a server/bartender, I expect a lot from other servers no matter what because I know how I am as a server. No server came over to me until 15 minutes later. The server that ended up taking my order never refilled my coffee and had me sitting for 20 minutes after I was done to give me my check.
