    THE TUSCAN SANDWICH
    Vivian H.

Recently met a friend for a leisurely Friday bfast after not having been to this place in a while. There was a 15-20 min wait even at 10:30 am. Once we were seated we took some time to pour over the menu. We both decided to get something we couldn't make at home. My friend got biscuits and gravy with eggs. I got the Tuscan sandwich I think that's what it was called with fried eggs instead of scrambled. It was so different and good. It had roasted tomatoes prosciutto fresh mozz eggs and pesto. Came with home fries too. We always get a table pancake to share which was great and also a side of corn beef hash. Service was good too! This place is a tad on the expensive side so probably won't be frequent diners but you can taste the quality of the food.

A great spot for excellent service and very good food! Parking is a little tight but don't let that discourage you. We had a few minute wait but not a problem! I ordered the 2 eggs over medium, rye toast, bacon and hash browns. So, so good!! The eggs were cooked perfectly, the rye toast was seeded which is more flavorful than seedless! The bacon was crispy, just the way I like it and the potatoes were seasoned exceptionally well- like you would at home! Zero complaints!!

This is our go to spot for breakfast after working out at the gym. A little reward for treating our bodies good. We always get service with a smile and steaming hot meals. This best combo ever.

Food was good, I had the pastrami eggs benedict, "The New Yorker". It was delicious and I would definitely would eat it again. Service was great, very attentive, only got to drink a quarter of my hot coffee before it was filled to the brim again. Ambiance was good. Would strongly recommend. I would absolutely come again.

    SHRIMP & GRITS

I love coming here and finding a seat at the counter. Forewarning, they always have amazing specials and it's always difficult to decide what to order because everything sounds delicious! Briana was my server at the counter, she was able to help me make a decision and narrow down what to order and she did not steer me wrong! I order the shrimp and grits and got three eggs over easy instead of the scrambled. The grits were perfectly cheesy, the shrimp has a nice kick as well! It's always packed for good reason but the service is always too notch which a very family cozy feel!

Great place. With best friend. Hopalong Casualty.

When best friend, Hopalong Casualty, and I get together, it's usually memorable. Such was the case on this day. He Amtraked up from NYC; I drove down from Windsor Locks. We arrived at SSC during breakfast, and luckily snagged the last open table. Michelle greeted us and kept us well caffeinated. Eclectic menu. Hopalong opted for a short stack of banana nut pancakes (w/o nuts, haha). I had the Mighty Green omelet with a side of grits. My omelet contained spinach, avocado, asparagus and broccoli, and was perfectly prepared. For me, the star of the show was (were?) the grits. Smoothest I ever inhaled. Hopalong raved about his pancakes as well as the accoutrements of the men's room where a visit (or three) is mandatory. Michelle checked on us numerous times. Everything about SSC was excellent. When we left, the waiting area was full. 5 yummy stars

    CARROT CAKE PANCAKES , and 2 X 2 X 2 .

Because of a local acquaintance's recommendations, we stopped by for breakfast. He ordered the 2 x 2 x 2 (2 eggs, 2 pieces of bacon, 2 pieces of French toast and home fries). Everything was excellent but he insisted the home fries needed peppers. Meanwhile, I was deep diving into a stack of carrot cake pancakes. Yum!! The coffee was flowing and refills at the ready.

Tastyyy!! The staff was friendly, the place is good size to comfortably sit in and eat. Stopped there on my way back to New York from Springfield.

This place is so freaking good! I'm a little bit obsessed with it. Every time I have been there, it is very crowded. Give yourself time to wait to be seated. Or just grab seats at the counter, there is usually room and that's first come first serve. The well done home fries from this place are literally heaven sent!. I was not a fan of my scrambled eggs because I like my scrambles lumpy. These were more like an omelette with no bits in the middle. The cinnamon roll pancake was out of this world! Definitely order that! Despite how crazy busy this place is, it does not feel chaotic. The facility is clean and well loved. The staff is friendly and hustles to keep pace with the demand. The parking can get a little busy, but there is a large lot in the back.

We havn't been in a few years, but the place hasn't changed a bit. Cute diner with super quick service. Our waitress was so nice. The wraps we got were delicious, especially the buffalo chicken one. I would recommend their lunch as much as their breakfast!

Really good breakfast food. At first, our server was a little standoffish, but seemed to warm up eventually. Despite the long line, we only waited about 10 mins to get in. Great neighborhood spot.

We love this place! Great breakfast dishes and creatively delicious specials. Customer service is great! Food is delicious!

Ask the Community - State Street Cafe

Do they serve breakfast all day?

They are only open til 2p and yes they are strictly a brunch spot.

Is this place good for a group of about 10?

They have a room in back that has tables that can be pushed together, but I would definitely call ahead for a party that big.

Onto the drinks and food which were so delicious and truly enjoyable. I got the Beachy Bee Iced Latte special, which is a honey vanilla latte with a coconut cold foam and toasted coconut on top (simply divine)! My fiancé got the cappuccino which was made just to his liking, and he's a coffee connoisseur. For food, I had the Bumble, which I highly recommend, with scrambled eggs, subbed with the gluten free sourdough bread (+$2 up-charge) and cheddar instead of American cheese. It's served all day and had so much flavor with that garlic butter, and the seasoned steak. Yum! If you are gluten free like me, you will appreciate that they have the gluten free sourdough bread or a gluten free wrap to substitute with. My partner had the Basic Bee with bacon and thought it was flavorful with light and fluffy scrambled eggs that complimented the bacon well. Overall, I would really recommend this place if you're looking for a breakfast or lunch in Wallingford!

I normally try to give places the benefit of the doubt, but our experience at The Bees Knees Bistro…read morein Wallingford was honestly very disappointing and upsetting. My family and I arrived while it was raining outside with our young daughters in strollers, expecting to sit down for a meal and get out of the weather. Instead, we were told we could not come in with the strollers and essentially felt unwelcome the moment we walked through the door. As parents of babies who are still too young to sit safely in high chairs on their own, the strollers are not optional for us , they are necessary. We were not being disruptive, rude, or inconsiderate. We were simply trying to have a meal as a family. Rather than attempting to accommodate us or show any understanding, we were left feeling like having children made us an inconvenience. What made the situation even worse was the fact that it was pouring outside. Any level of kindness or flexibility would have gone a long way. Instead, we felt embarrassed, frustrated, and honestly shocked by the lack of compassion and customer service. Families with young children already face enough challenges going out in public, and experiences like this make it even harder. We ended up leaving and taking our business somewhere else that was far more welcoming and understanding toward families. It is disappointing because we were genuinely looking forward to trying this restaurant, but first impressions matter. A restaurant does not need to be "kid-centered" to still treat parents and babies with basic respect and decency. I completely understand that restaurants may have space limitations or policies, but there is a respectful and compassionate way to handle situations like this. Instead, the experience came across as cold and dismissive. There are many restaurants in the area that are happy to accommodate families, and moving forward those are the businesses I will continue to support. Unfortunately, after this experience, I will not be returning and would not recommend this restaurant to families with infants or children who still require strollers or extra accommodations. I wont be going back and giving them .you business, nor will I be recommending this place to anyone. Totally rude and discrimination towards those with babies. I did not feel cherished like their website says every guest is. Its sad because this will and im sure does effect their business. I will never give them my business after yesterday. No attempts at accommodating us or evening offering to let us sit outside, lazy staff, but yet there were 3 teenage girls taking names for the wait list. What a joke.

Most of their baked goods were sold out, which totally made sense because it was nearly closing time and the items that remained looked delicious. So we were sure that whatever had been sold before was more of the same. I ordered a hot latte and the kiddo ordered a raspberry tea. We also decided to order toasted sandwiches (grilled vegetables for me and grilled cheese for her) to enjoy in the shop. Enjoy we did! The latte was served with a foam smiley face. The espresso was strong and delicious and tempered nicely by the milk. Her tea was piping hot and fruity. The sandwiches were toasted but not blazing hot, for which we were thankful because we were very hungry. They also weren't greasy - an issue I have with other toasted sandwiches. As a side note - why do sandwich shops slather sandwiches in oil or butter when a simple iron sandwich press and a hot grill will suffice? Anyway, our sandwiches were great! They were filling but didn't leave us feeling lethargic (please refer back to the not greasy comment.) We were so happy to have a good meal and a seat after a long tour around the Quinnipiac campus. Bussing one's table is expected and the staff kept the tables spic and span in between patrons. Speaking of the staff, the young man who took our order and was servicing the dining area was kind and patient as we ordered. We made sure to leave fifteen minutes before closing because we didn't want to be THOSE people, namely the couple in the corner who'd setup their computer shop and looked to have no intention of leaving without a fight. We will definitely return to Bread & Chocolate if we find ourselves in the area again.

This place was extremely disappointing…read more I've had their bread at local restaurants and always thought it was excellent, which is what motivated me to visit in person. Over the past few months, I tried stopping by three separate times, twice they were already closed, and once they had completely sold out of bread. I finally made it there on a Sunday morning, and they had only one loaf left, and not a type I wanted. We decided to order two egg and cheese sandwiches (one with turkey bacon). Both were terrible. The rolls were soft, soggy, wet, and flavorless. Each sandwich had a single egg placed off-center, so half the roll barely had any egg at all. The turkey bacon was so bad we removed it and threw it out. Normally, I would have just moved on and not returned. But what really pushed me to write this review (which I never write) was the carrot cake we purchased. We took it home, refrigerated it, and tried it later that evening. It was, without question, the worst piece of carrot cake I've ever had. The frosting was hard, dry, stale, and completely lacking flavor, no sweetness at all. The cake itself was equally bad: dry, crumbly, and utterly tasteless. There was no hint of carrot, cinnamon, nutmeg, or any spice, just bland, dry crumbs. The cake was completely lacking sugar. After two bites, we threw it in the garbage. I don't say this lightly. I've been cooking and baking for decades, hold a degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management, and spent over 20 years in the industry. I've traveled extensively and eaten outstanding food around the world. For me, someone who genuinely loves desserts, to throw cake away (which is rare) says everything. I understand it was a Sunday and that fresh baking may not be happening that day, but it's simply not acceptable to sell baked goods from prior days that are clearly stale. Even more concerning than the staleness however, was the complete lack of flavor in the product. The sandwiches were disappointing, but that cake was on another level. I won't be returning for sandwiches or desserts, but perhaps the bread.
