Upon arrival, the Bees Knees Bistro is cozy inside. Our server was attentive and all the staff seemed pleasant and helpful. Onto the drinks and food which were so delicious and truly enjoyable. I got the Beachy Bee Iced Latte special, which is a honey vanilla latte with a coconut cold foam and toasted coconut on top (simply divine)! My fiancé got the cappuccino which was made just to his liking, and he's a coffee connoisseur. For food, I had the Bumble, which I highly recommend, with scrambled eggs, subbed with the gluten free sourdough bread (+$2 up-charge) and cheddar instead of American cheese. It's served all day and had so much flavor with that garlic butter, and the seasoned steak. Yum! If you are gluten free like me, you will appreciate that they have the gluten free sourdough bread or a gluten free wrap to substitute with. My partner had the Basic Bee with bacon and thought it was flavorful with light and fluffy scrambled eggs that complimented the bacon well. Didn't have time to sit down, but wanted to run in and try some of the goodies at bees knees. The space was on the smaller side, but well laid out. It was packed full of breakfast goers on Saturday morning. We left with the salted caramel cheesecake, latte, and the apple chaider (topped off with a cookie). Food is nothing special. Hash browns can be found in the frozen aisle at any grocery store, they just deep fried them and burnt them and they're super greasy. Eggs were cold. Waffles were cold. Syrup they provide is super runny. Chocolate croissant was literally missing chocolate but was a special. Fried chicken was overcooked and burnt, resulting in VERY dry chicken to the point it was inedible and the entire meal with cold eggs had to be sent back. However, they did put gold on the fried chicken to possibly distract us at how awfully overcooked and under seasoned they were. Haha! We could've made a better breakfast at home but my friends and I wanted to try a cute spot this morning. Latte was lukewarm and mediocre. Our server was Faith. I always find that the server is a huge part of a diner's experience. She lacked enthusiasm and positivity. She rarely checked in on us and seemed like she was avoiding us. Honestly, her attitude put a damper on our experience and set the worse tone for our day. She didn't even bring out our food because another server had to and it was chaotic. That's probably a huge reason why the food was cold. Debbie Downer decided to include a 20% gratuity on our check, probably because one person sent her food back. Funny thing is, one of my friends had been here over the summer and gratuity wasn't included but they "reserve the right to add 20% gratuity " per their menu in tiny font. We are NOT people who would not tip. Even my friend that sent her food back and didn't eat pulled cash out to tip her. The ambiance is very quaint and cute with bee decor. I wanted to have a latte and breakfast entree here, but quickly realized this place was not going to be it for me. I waited by the register for over 15 minutes to even be acknowledged. Then when I was finally spoken to was told, "we are done serving breakfast so you will have to get something to go." But I decided on the Carpenter Bee sandwich. Lean, tender shaved steak. Sharp melted American. Grilled peppers and onions. Tomato Jam. Garlic aioli. All on a fresh artisan ciabatta roll. The Carpenter Bee was a tasty high end sandwich. If anything, it could have used a bit more beef fat for flavor. I really respected the side pasta salad. Had its own vibe. It was made with short, thick pasta tubes. Creamy sort of mayo sauce. Small pieces of veggies. This pasta salad was a couple steps up from the norm, and I appreciated the attention to the details. I also ordered cold brew topped with a house Strawberry Cold Foam. It was terrific. It arrived in a fun glass shaped like stacked inter tubes And the strawberry cold foam was thick, delicious and luscious. The bistro was low key cute. The drinks were tasty and beautifully presented. Unfortunately, the service was mediocre, as it took 29 minutes after ordering for our food to arrive. The one star, however, is not solely for the service or the food--which would have earned a better rating--but for the small, fine print stating that the restaurant "reserves the right to add a 20% gratuity." This is the first time I've encountered this in Connecticut. In my view, great service should be a given in any hospitality business, and when service exceeds expectations, a tip is warranted--but the amount should be left to the discretion of the patrons. Finally had the pleasure to eat in at the Bees Knees Bistro in Wallingford. Located on Center Street, this little breakfast and lunch eatery has drummed up a lot of hype from the locals and foodies who come far and wide. They are always busy [bees]. Offering up delicious coffee, baked goodies, breakfast platters, toasts, salads, and sandwiches, everything is made fresh, using locally sourced ingredients. Their menu is small, but mighty and they have vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options available. Definitely check out their seasonal specials menu too. Make note that they serve and change from breakfast and lunch at different times compared to weekdays and Saturday. Breakfast is served all day on Sundays. They close at 2:30pm. Check out their website or social pages for the latest updates. My husband and I visited on a Sunday for breakfast. Once they opened at 8am, tables were filling up fast. Luckily, we got a table. Our server was very friendly and they had a lot of staff to help with the morning rush. I started with an Iced Honey Lavender Latte with oat milk. My latte was delicious and had a strong lavender flavor--lavender coffee is one of my go-to's. For food, I ordered the Cardamom Creme Brulee Toast. It was presented beautifully. It was two slices of lightly toasted sourdough with a generous amount of mashed raspberries, topped with a sweet pastry creme brulee, and finished with lemon thyme. So delicious, the flavors married together so well and the raspberries were perfectly sweet. There were a few pieces of honeycomb which was a nice touch and on theme! My husband ordered the Catch A Redeye. It was a breakfast platter with two eggs (he opted them to be scrambled), choice of pancakes or waffles, choice of bacon or sausage, and a hashbrown. He chose the waffles which I was surprised were shaped like honeycomb, so cute! The cafe does is very cramped when all the tables are occupied. I'm happy to see the Bees Knees Bistro is doing so well--I can see them outgrowing their little cafe space in the future. I did learn a while ago that you can stop in for a coffee and a baked treat to-go which I've taken advantage. I learned that this business has only been open for 7 months and wow they are busy! They don't take reservations however they do notate names for tables for the day. Call ahead is an option so definitely do that if coming at 9a or later. Since we can't make reservations, and we didn't know we can call ahead, we were told it would be a 30-min wait. We did wait a little more due to the tables not clearing out too quickly. Unfortunate for us, I can't fault the business though if people don't want to leave. Luckily there was an awning outside so we were shielded from the rain or sun if it was too hot. It might be good to have a text service if in case the wait is longer and people want to walk around the area while they wait? My friends and I stayed outside and passed the time quickly by chatting away and catching up. We also browsed the menu so that we knew what to order when we were sat. Sadly breakfast ended when we got seated which wasn't all too bad. The lunch menu had plenty to be desired and wow was I blown away by the falafel! The tatziki sauce was oh so delicious. Everything was delicious. I got to taste a bite of the Prosciutto Di Peach-a and that was delectable too! The sweetness of the peach was perfect. It wasn't too ripe either that it was mushed at first bite. Yum! The matcha latte lacked sweetness so if that's not your thing, add flavored foam or some other syrup. I was fine with it as is. The dressing for the Cobb salad also enhanced the flavors of the greens, cheese egg and bacon. I really love that the egg was not overdone and had more texture and definitely not dry. Went here for brunch with friends and it was really cute. The wait was 30-40 minutes, so give yourself some time. There's also no room to wait inside, so dress warmly! They have great coffee! The salted maple latte was delicious. My husband got the chicken and waffles and while he liked it, it did not fill him up. The portion size is tiny! I wish they made it more worthwhile. We got the Love You Lox for our son and he ate it all up. Perfect for a toddler. As for me, I got the Herbivore, and it had a great balance of flavors. Felt wholesome and fresh. What a cute bistro! First, not very large place very quaint, we had a party of 6 and there's only one table that could fit us. We needed to wait about 20 minutes. The size was perfect for our crowd. If you happen to go on a warm day there is outside seating also. The wait staff was great so pleasant. Once seated we ordered beverages they did offer Mimosas which were yummy. The food is prepared to order you can definitely tell by the freshness. The Cobb salad was made fresh and not a small portion. Recently met my friend for bfast here. For a Thursday this place was jamming. The only seat left was at the window bar but that was fine. It was so packed and loud! Think this place prob could use better acoustics. Anyways on to the food. My friend group and I like to share everything so we opted for the herbivore sandwich with bacon added, the love you lox and a short stack of blueberry pancakes. It took a longgg time to get our food and our pancakes didn't have blueberries like we ordered but opted to just have the waitress bring a side of them rather than having to wait for new ones. I really loved the herbivore sandwich! Such interesting flavors. My friend liked it too and said it was oniony. Love you lox was decent but nothing spectacular. Pancakes were good too. From the second I walked inside, I totally adored this place! It is beautiful both inside and out with a friendly, local vibe. This place is an absolute gem here in Wallingford. The smash burger is incredible. It's probably one of the best restaurant hamburgers in the entire area. I say this having eaten at over three dozen burger joints throughout the state, and hands down the soft pillow brioche bun, the combination of melted cheeses, a properly seasoned and cooked beef patty, fresh vegetables, meltingly-good onions, and the options for an egg, avocado, and bacon make this a serious contender. There's no dry, falling-apart burger here, it's just exceptional. The fries are decent. The prosciutto and peach panini is one of those very unique takes on a summer entree, and I have to say it works very well. It's refreshing to see a restaurant like this take a chance on things that are new and different and the outcome speaks for itself. The pasta salad is a nice alternative to the fries. The restaurant itself is not that large even with both the indoor and patio areas , so prepare to wait if you come here at a busy hour. The servers are absolutely friendly and wonderful. The only caveat is that "good food takes time" so if you're in a hurry, do not come here and expect that your food is going to pop out within 5-10 minutes like an Applebees or Marie Callenders. We got there 10:50 and had a few ahead of us. We were 7. There's just 1 naturally large table but options to seat larger parties by rearranging tables. Breakfast is only served until 11:45. When we gave our name they didn't say anything about the breakfast to lunch turnover or even that we might not be able to be seated in time for lunch. Had I not inquired around 11:30 (we were told the wait was 20-30 minutes), this may have turned out differently. Thankfully, the owner(?) asked a pair of regulars to move so they could put 3 tables together for us in time for breakfast. From that point on we had a great experience. The waitress was excellent and attentive. The food was delicious, prepared properly and presented beautifully. I won't go through everything everyone had but you can see pictures I've posted. My daughter and I shared the Love you Lox & Wildberry Toast & through in a chocolate chip muffin for good measure. I believe all the baked goods, including the bread, is from Hamden's Bread & Chocolate, another good place to eat. I would suggest to the owners that they put the kitchen hours on the menu & website and communicate with patrons upon putting. Same on waiting list. Better yet, with the limited hours, serve the entire menu during open hours. I'll be back to try several other menu items. read more

I order The Basic Bee. 2 fried eggs with sausage, topped with Cooper Sharp American cheese on a Lupi's hard roll. I also ordered a hash brown. My breakfast sandwich was excellent. Checked out The Bees Knees last month. An adorable spot in the center of Wallingford. You can walk in to grab a coffee and some of their baked goods (like their salted tahini chocolate chip cookies), or sit down and dine in. What I will say is the place was fully packed on a Saturday morning. They were attempting to keep up with walk in coffee orders as well as drinks for the rest of the restaurant. As it happens to so many places that become popular on social media very quickly, I don't think they had enough staff to meet the demand so the service was very slow. I will say, everything we had was delicious! I enjoyed the coffee, as well as the chicken and waffles. The waffles were shaped like honey combs, and the chicken was dusted with edible gold glitter. They definitely go the extra mile for presentation. I'd recommend this spot if you're in the area, but would say to attempt to stop in during the week if possible to avoid the long wait. read more

It's located in the building that was formerly Cafe Ra, but definitely has a different atmosphere and vibe. Here's the scoop on this new spot... Parking is available on-street, and there are a couple free public parking lots within walking distance. The restaurant itself is fairly small, but they have a good amount of tables inside. They serve both breakfast and lunch, so I decided to go on two separate occasions, once to get breakfast and once to get lunch. For breakfast I ordered the Banana Smash Toast, which consisted of two slices of grilled sourdough bread topped with mashed bananas, drizzled with peanut butter (or almond butter), chia seeds, coconut flakes, and Vermont maple syrup. It was so good! And a little healthier option compared to the bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich I usually get when I go out to breakfast. The menu also included several other "toasts" with various toppings, breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, waffles, and a frozen fruit bowl. They also have pastries like scones, croissants, etc. then coffee/tea drinks. I got an Iced Spiced Chai Latte, which was delicious! When I went for lunch, I ordered the Chicken Salad Sandwich, which was served on toasted sourdough bread with tomato and sunflower sprouts. The chicken salad was excellent. All sandwiches come with a side of pasta salad, or you can substitute fries, sweet potato fries, or a salad for a slight up-charge. The lunch menu has a variety of other sandwiches, including a make-your-own sandwich board, and salads. To drink I ordered a Matcha Latte topped with raspberry whipped cream. It was good, although not quite sweet enough for me (they used unsweetened matcha). The raspberry whipped cream was delicious though! The service was fast and they staff were friendly. As you can tell by the name, they have a whole "bee hive" theme going on, which was cool. Both times when I went, the place was packed, so expect that you may have to wait a few minutes for a table.
