What a cute little place! I met my friend-also a Yelp elite- for breakfast as we do pretty regularly. This was his choice. There were people of all ages in there for breakfast, which I love, It shows it appeals to so many! I ordered a cup of tea and tried their eggs Benedict. That's my breakfast of choice when I go out. It was ver delicious. The eggs were poached to perfection and the sauce had a hint of lemon-which shows a good chef! It did come with fried potatoes, which were very good! I stopped in here to grab a breakfast sandwich after taking a hike up Sleeping Giant. The breakfast menu was pretty large and had a lot of options! I got an egg white and turkey breakfast sandwich and my boyfriend a kielbasa and egg sandwich. Overall they were good, a decent sandwich for inexpensive. There was a bit too much bread for the amount of meat and egg for my taste but solidly ok. A good place for cheap that I'd recommend a visit to. read more

I'm not sure why this place isn't busier. It is the perfect old fashion breakfast joint are used to be on every street corner in America. I was here the other day after my early meeting finished up. I enjoyed perfectly cooked eggs over medium, rye toast, hashbrowns with an extra side of bacon. the hash browns were different, not crispy but had a nice blend of spices. I was driving on 10 and forgot that I forgot to plan for lunch before an appointment. I don't exactly like to drive aimlessly around Hamden looking for a quick lunch spot. However there are times when these things just happen. There I was in the vortex hoping to find somewhere to eat lunch without even time to check Yelp (can you imagine?). I quickly pulled in the parking lot (lots of cars which obviously is a good sign). The descriptions are accurate. Diner for breakfast and lunch, clean, friendly service. I had a grilled cheese with tomato, fries and slaw for get this: $6.38. I'm not making this up! So next time you are driving aimlessly down Rte. 10 in Hamden stop here. Route Ten Restaurant is located in the same building as the old Smokey's Grill, which is sorely missed in Hamden. It is your basic breakfast and lunch only spot and I really hope the new owners make a go of it here. The food is very good and the prices are beyond reasonable. It is a diner style menu with all the usual breakfast staples and typically familiar sandwiches and burgers for lunch. For a small restaurant with a lunch counter and a few tables, that is all you need if the food output is good quality, and that is the case here. On my recent visit with my wife, we got two large omelets with home fries and toast included (they even have sourdough toast!), a bottomless coffee and soft drink and got out of there for a shade under $20. For what you have to pay for a big breakfast these days, that is excellent value. It's hard to get the equivalent of what we ordered for under $25 at some of the larger diners in the area. I live close to this spot so I will definitely be visiting more often to try some of their other breakfast options and lunch menu items. read more

Update with more info.The service was fast and the food was good. the prices are pretty affordable for breakfast. When i entered it had that homey diner feel. There was a "regular" at the counter chatting it up with the server/hostess. he knew the entire staff by name. The owners are friendly. i did take out and they cooked my food just the way i liked it. I got a Belgian waffle, 2 eggs, toast, and home fries for under $10! The food was tasty and the butter and syrup were still warm when i got to my destination! (granted it was near town hall but still) my only feedback would be if you have to watch your butter intake... then tell them lite butter on your toast.. mine was very noticeable but i liked it.. I told at least 5 people about it today. i will have to come back to try more items. read more

I read many of the reviews before writing this, and was quite puzzled by what I read. They all were 4 or 5 stars and the food got raves. On 11/14/18, I was in Hamden and stopped at Rte 10 Restaurant after discovering that my original destination had changed hands. This was my first visit to Rte 10. I found the place to be clean and tidy and I felt quite at ease. The waitress was friendly and efficient. I ordered a standard fare breakfast; eggs over medium, bacon, homefries, and an English muffin. Here's where things get wonky. Of my three eggs, one was undercooked and two were overcooked. The bacon was literally like chewing rubber, not a bit of it was crispy. And the home fries consisted of cubed potatoes that ranged from not fully cooked to little cubes of almost charcoal. I also have to note that the potato was not seasoned at all and was very bland and unpalatable. The English muffin was fine, as was the coffee. So, for me this is a one-and-done. read more
