Husband and I happen to be in the area and grab some breakfast here. We love the throwback diner vibe the restaurant serves. Is the person who served us was very kind and attentive. The food was OK. I was not the biggest fan of the hashbrowns because it was a bit soggy as you can probably tell by the picture my husband's bacon, egg and cheese could've been a little bit more toasted as well. I believe it's called The Coffee Shoppe now, regardless great place to get food. It's a cute spot that has been updated in the past few years but still has a very homey feel. Decorated nicely and feels very clean. Great selection of breakfast and lunch foods that all taste delicious and for reasonable prices. Staff is very friendly and service was great. The owner is extremely hard working and you can tell she cares about the quality of the food being put out and having a positive impact in the Valley. She refused to honor the price, got red in the face and plainly stated, "No, I am not honoring it!" walked away. There is a large dog there that was called behind the counter where the food is prepared and cooked. HUUUGGEEEE HEALTH VIOLATION!!!!. A little challenging to find - Yelp calls this Burnsies, but the outside only says "Coffee Shop". This was one of the very few times Yelpers have let me down. I am lost as to how this place has five stars. The eggs were not good. The potatoes were okay, but I have never met a potato I didn't like (I may have a problem there), and the French toast was likely the worst I have had anywhere, anytime. Couldn't taste vanilla, cinnamon, or spices of any kind. The "Maple Syrup" on the my table was equally as bad as it tasted like half water, half syrup - no flavor. The small town diner thing where everyone knows each other, and nothing has changed inside in 30 years can only get you so far - the flavors have to be there and they were blatantly missing last Tuesday morning in Naugatuck. Whenever I travel to my hometown and see my BFF Lora Kennedy, she's wanted me to try some great small town diner grub at Burnsies (she's got love for the place having worked there for many years). Inevitably, I always seem to miss it due to the diner's hours (or mine). On my last day in CT recently I had to be at JFK for 8am. Lora was driving me, we had just a short time to grab coffee and breakfast before getting in route, not much would be open and we didn't want any McDouchald's or the like. She suggested Burnsies. I must say from the beginning I loved the small town atmosphere, joking and whoa!...did that great smell of bacon, eggs and coffee, all wrapped nicely together grab and pull me in! Bill the owner was busy cooking at the grill and getting out the orders. He made it look effortlessly as he was methodical in his prep and delivery (I'd have been going batty). I noticed how all appeared to feel comfortable. Shoot, Lora walked around the counter and poured our coffee for us just like she was at a friends. Hey, it was 1 less thing Bill had to do! Thanks Lora for suggesting Burnsies and thanks Burnsies for an awesome send off with your delicious BE&C sandwich and hot fresh coffee! People have said that you feel like family in this little breakfast joint, and they're not lying! I was traveling from my house in Middletown to Fairfield and was looking for breakfast on the way, this place popped up and I'm so glad it did! One of the towns people greeted me and my mom outside the front door and told us a little history on the place. I ordered short stack of pancakes and my mom got eggs with sides. Both were absolutely delicious!! Her home fries were perfectly seasoned and my pancake was light and fluffy just the way I like it! This is the best hole in the walll place I ever been too! I get such a homie vibe when I walk in and the staff was very nice and great. Customer service was amazing the staff had so many regulars return back and they know their orders by heart. You don't even need to say a word and they will already know your order. Burnsies is a hidden gem in Naugatuck, it's the kind of diner you look for in a town. It's a place the locals go, the regulars know your name as does the staff. Food is exactly what you want, fresh, good, fast and inexpensive. Without any reference you could easily imagine sitting there in the 60's and 70's and it would probably look and smell the same. Prices are very fair. I highly recommend the home fries, reminds me of the home fries I had in my youth at the long gone Teds Spa in Seymour. I have been going here just about weekly for 12 years now. I first start going here as a kid in the early 70's with Mom. I think Bill has had the joint since 1978. I remember a many a late night after partying in 1978-82 (well, maybe a bit foggy) watching in amazement of Billy working his magic on the grill. The place would be mobbed and he never wrote anything down and he got everything right! They open early just every day, including some holiday's. I think he is there around 4:30am. The place is small and the 10-12 booths are small. If you have more than a couple you may have to split up. A bunch of regulars and as a previous reviewer said, everyone has a good time. You need to listen to the banter from Billy, Ruthie and Marion. The prices are reasonable and I find the breakfast right on spot every time. You order and you get it quickly. Burnsies has been around forever and goes by several names; Burnsies, The Coffee Shoppe, and S'Elohssa (you won't get that last one unless you go inside!) People visit Naugatuck Connecticut for the legendary Nardeli's. Right next to a very good grinder (not quite as good as Cavallos imported deli) is the most phenomenal little dive coffee shop. Walk in a stranger, walk out with the keys to the city. I say to Billy the owner "I love this place. Best BEC on a real New England hard roll". He answers "want to buy it", the place that is. Ruth the friendly waitress running around filling creamers, salt shakers and answering customer who said "hey I like my bacon egg cheese on a hard roll and my egg over easy" and Ruth fires back, "Hey buddy we make our eggs only one way, dead". I can fill this page with one liners, like Billy the owner says hey kid you got any friends, I say no with a little sarcasm and he says "I didn't think so". Everything on the menu is good and the atmosphere real home town fun. Same place I visited @ 1am in 1981 to watch a legend Wayne Paladino gobble down 7 Billy burgers each containing 2 all beef patty, cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, fried egg on a fresh Portuguese roll. A small town diner, with an authentic feel. The staff was warm and welcoming and the location feels like it has been there forever. All of the patrons were reading the morning paper, not one person was on their cell phone, which somehow seemed significant to me. I ordered the Billy Bennie, an eggs benedict dish served over ham but with no hollandaise sauce, it was pretty good. The dish works without the sauce but a bit salty and the eggs were just slightly overdone, only a minor concern. So I happen to be in the area about a week ago and saw this little place. I decided to try it out seeing as how little hole in the wall places tend to be some of the best. Well this couldn't be farther from that. As I walked in the door, there were 4 piles of plates and eaten food with about 5-6 plates in each pile all over the bar top. Not someplace you want to see garbage when you walk in to a restaurant. I sat down and was greeted by a friendly server almost instantly and provided with a cup of coffee. Upon trying the coffee, it was actually very good. I looked through the menu and it had the typical breakfast fare. I opted for an omelette with a side of Italian Sausage. Upon receiving my food, I proceeded to cut my omelet with my fork to eat it. That's when I heard a "crunching" noise. I looked under the omelette and the whole underside was burnt. I decided to eat it anyways for the sake of providing an honest review of what I was given. Sure enough, it tasted burnt. The homefries it came with looked good but had no seasoning on them. Then came the Italian sausage. I'm not really sure if these were links at one time, patties, or ground sausage. It was pretty confusing being that they did not resemble clearly any of the 3. Flavor was ok. After paying and while I was walking out the door, I noticed a rug with a different name on it and a different name on the window, however the Menu etc said Burnsies. Nothing drives me crazier than a place that doesn't pay attention to detail. In closing, service was great which saved this review from a 1 star rating. Everything else about Burnsies though was less than acceptable. Not some place I would recommend going out of your way to try. I hate to give mom and pop small town places bad ratings, but at the end of the day, it helps those looking to spend their hard earned money and those who own the establishments to improve on their products. read more
