Somewhat cramped and slightly claustrophobic, this bar is what Cheers would have been if it wasn't lame and was gay. Oh, and in New Haven... While during the cold months the bar is a little tame I've had some good times during the summer months. I have one fond memory of rock-star like partying in the back patio. Since those days are mostly over now 168 will have a place in my heart always. Yes, it's true the clientele leans toward the older side but they're all typically nice people (there are some off-the-hook weirdos, but where aren't there?) and often make great conversation. I'm looking forward to a summer visit and hopefully to another rock-star moment.

Three things are required for a good brunch: rich coffee, fresh OJ, and real maple syrup. York Street Cafe was 0/3 and had so-so food.

"Kind of a drag When your baby don't love you"…read more(The Buckinghams) When one of your closest friends invites you to a drag show, you step out of your comfort zone and go! That's what eight of us did today as we headed over to Chez Est for a 90's themed "Brunch in Heels" featuring Loosey Laduca's crew of three singing and dancing drag queens. Loosey was the emcee, had an entertaining patter throughout the show, introduced the performers, and gave a stirring rendition of "the greatest song of the 90's" - My Heart will Go On from Titanic. So what other songs did we hear as the performers danced, did some bone cracking splits, strutted around the stage, and worked the crowd for tips? We heard Lady Marmalade by Li'l Kim, Lose My Breath by Destiny's Child, Let's Get Loud by J Lo, Barbie Girl by Aqua, Groove is in the Heart by Deee-Lite, Donatella by Lady Gaga, and Shoop by Salt-N-Pepa. We even heard a medley of 90's kiddie TV shows including Animaniacs and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The show was very entertaining and included an audience participation segment where birthday boys and girls crashed the stage for a dance-off and a beer chugging competition. Oh, and we also had brunch there -the food menu is very reasonable and ranged from $8 to $12 a plate for eggs, waffles, breakfast tacos and the like. Eight of us ate and drank for $300 including tip. That doesn't include the scores of singles we spent tipping the entertainers. I thought the staff at Chez Est was very accommodating and helped us move and consolidate our two tables so we had a better view of the stage. But even if you sit way in the back, the entertainers strut their stuff throughout the premises to hit every table, and there are a few strategically placed flat screens on the walls showing the stage action. It was quite a fun time.

With gay bars rapidly disappearing across America, Troupe stands out as a vibrant hub in the Fairfield County LGBTQ+ scene. The owners pour their heart and soul into every aspect of the bar including the programming, music, and atmosphere, and it really shows. From drag shows and burlesque performances to seasonal drink specials, themed parties, and go-go shows, there's always something happening. Troupe quickly became my go-to spot after discovering it one week into living in CT and I'm so grateful for its existence. Huge shoutout to Casey and Nicholas for the love and tireless work they put into making Troupe429 what it is today--and of course to Johnny, who mixes the meanest elderflower gin and tonic in town.

I go in and the bar is packed, which is a great sign. However, ordering a drink, of course in a packed bar is really hard. I had my jacket over a chair and someone was sitting on it and I didn't make a big deal out of it. So I sat on the chair next to mine. Again, just trying to order a drink. The person who had their stuff on the chair comes back and instead of it being between me and this person it turns into two more people jumping in on me upset that I'm sitting on someone else's chair. The bartender then gets in on it, and he starts being rude and yelling at everybody, but more so me because he was friends with the other people. Then me and the guy are laughing and making up and talking. And he comes back and yells at us again. This time for no reason. Screaming out of the top of his lungs. Needless to say I never got to replace my drinks. And I never got to see if it was a good bar because I was being yelled at by the bartender and other people. Was in there for maybe 15-20 mins. Really awful experience and it was the bartender with short black hair. Hopefully he learns to actually be kinder. Definitely didn't feel like a safe space
