First time here. Not in time for the regular menu unfortunately so had to pick from very limited late night menu. As a pescatarian, there were VERY limited choices. Hard to go wrong with frozen fries ravioli but they were just a bit like cardboard with a little help from a decent marinara. Good beer selection and very nice wait staff. Hopefully can get there earlier next time but it would be nice for them to add a few sandwiches to the late night menu. read more

Been coming for years. Love the bar, bartenders are fantastic and friendly people. So many great times and memories made here. Tonight I was not allowed in by the bouncer Tod and I felt I had to leave a review. Disappointed by him for not allowing me in the building and telling me to F*** off and that I'm not allowed in. I felt disrespected that I wasn't allowed in a place I frequent at least once a week. I hope they can improve their staff and bring it back to the New West I have come to love. read more

I'm sad because I want this bar to be nice, because I would like a nice tiny bar in the area. But this place was just too gross. Looked like nobody had cleaned the counters or behind the bar in months/years. Kind of a lame vibe too. Didn't eat anything for obvious reasons. Chef was very obviously not following food safety protocol- my bartender was eating dinner while she was serving us. A thick layer of dried beer covered the whole bar. Drips of grease down the walls, etc. want to go here- wish it was better! read more

A friendly, accessible neighborhood dive bar, busy on all nights of the week. Crowd varies, with a younger crowd showing up later in the evenings. Bring your own darts. Simple but comfortable seating, good selection of local craft beers on tap, no Yale influence, which can be refreshing sometimes if you're from mainstream America. Haven't tried all that much of the food - it's basic wings, parm sandwiches, fries, pasta etc. Place used to be focused on Coors, Bud Light etc and still has cheap $5 pitchers, but it now also always has several good local beers on tap including many selections from New England, No Worries, Counterpoint, Two Roads, Stony Creek, etc., for $5-6 per pint. 4 stars based on friendliness of staff, value, and location. read more

Most people would simply pass this establishment off as a dive bar but the quality of food brings this place to a whole new level. Aside from the wings that bring New West Cafe recognition, there is a wide variety of delicious menu items. There is also a fantastic array of flavorful dinner specials throughout the week that one would not suspect. Great Bar in Westville. Wings/Darts Have always been the New west Staples. After Getting a new chef about a year ago their food has greatly improved from years past and is well worth the Price. Deffinately a friendly atmosphere. I don't know if it's the mix of patrons or their friendly Staff, but my friends and I always have a good time without cleaning out our wallets. I can't say enough good things about this place. They have some of the most knowledgeable bartenders and they make some really innovative drinks. Their menu is quite expansive but if you are unsure you can always ask the bartender to serve their own creation. Which often turns out to be better than menu drinks. Don't get me wrong menu drinks are quite awesome. This is a great place to bring a date. Its cozy, not too loud, dim and has an exclusivity vibe. New West is a dive bar near SCSU. It's usually pretty packed with college students. They have cheap wings on Mondays, so it's worth going for that. The last time I went, they also had shots of Patron for $4.50. This is excellent, as Delaney's (across the street) has kind of a crappy tequila selection; so my friends and I can hang out and drink our favorite beers at Delaney's, sneak across the street for a couple cheap shots, and then go back to Delaney's. Also, there seem to not be as many fights as there used to be at New West, so that's nice. read more

I came here to waste some time and grab some drinks. They have a lot of domestic and American style beers. I can't say they are craft beer, but they had Sam Adams and a couple others. Every night is their special night. I came on a Wednesday where they had $2 bud, bud light and Yeungling on draft. Cool dive bar that serves food. I will try their food next time. read more

I like New West. It's not a bar that everyone will enjoy - but for a neighborhood place to get wings and beer - I say that it's A-OK. I recently moved to Westville and my bf really likes New West for drinks. We've been there many times and the bartenders have always been friendly and expedient. The wings are decent. It's a nice little dive bar that does liven up on the weekends and during big games. There is a juke box (it is rather expensive, but found out that if you put $5 into it you get way more songs than if you do $1 at a time) and a few dart boards in the back. Parking is somewhat limited to street parking in Westville. Recommended if you are looking for a drink at a low key place. Happy hour on Fridays is $20 all you can drink from 8 till 11. I used to meet friends at the New West 40 years ago when Mike owned it. The inside has since been cleaned up and the food fare expanded. The new owner's have done a great job. The place looks great. I've been in here twice in the past year without incident, but tonight, 30 Sept 2022, the bar staff was just awful. Two women bartenders, and while holding cash in my hand waiting to order the blonde girl just walked by and ignored me and my wife despite our obvious desure to order drinks...the other girl ensconced herself at the far end near the kitchen gossiping away while other patrons needed attention as well...we finally walked out...but not before someone else did too. The new owners need to check up on this Friday night crew...they are costing the New West business. It's so expensive now paying exorbitant New Haven taxes, liability insurance and all the other carrying charges in such a business, so this can become a real impact on income. This is meant as constructive criticism...the staff needs to understand the importance of attending to the customer in addition to helping the business succeed and be the most profitable it can be... read more

Racist. If you come in the evening for a good time and aren't white, they will turn you away and claim they're no longer serving alcohol. This has happened multiple times, when they were clearly serving to other people, and it was way too early for them to stop (like 8-10pm). Fed up. Will never return. read more

Normally, I enjoy New West. It's a fun dive bar to go to that has a relaxing environment. you can go in sweatpants and it's completely acceptable. It's pretty small. A lot of college students on certain nights. Darts and wings. Food is okay- Nothing special, but it goes down good with a beer. However, I recently had a bad experience with some of the bartenders. I was yelled at, called a bitch, and she started swatting at my face because I simply pointed out bartime was wrong(by 20 minutes). I was not even moderately disrespectful and I am disappointed that management did not take more action after observing her behavior. I feel taken advantage of. She then proceeded to put extra charges on my tab. Afterward, someone just came over and said "sorry about that" to me. -_- read more

I wanted to give this place a better rating, not because it's amazing, but because I love dive bars. Now, as far as dive bars go, this one is clean and friendly. There is a great selection of craft beers as well as the normal swill you people keep insisting on buying. It's very easy to get the bartender's attention and the wait for food is reasonable. However, my friend ordered some nachos one afternoon and what happened next is the reason I can't recommend this place. The nachos were below average. That means exactly what you expect. The chips were straight out of the bag, some bland cheese was thrown on top, and then some other things were dumped on after that. It's the kind of nachos you make as a 12-year-old when you finally get enough confidence to cook after heating up your first can of soup. The nachos were too expensive if they cost more than three dollars. That is not the worst part of the experience. The guy who made the nachos and served them to us was not the owner. That's not a big surprise. What was a surprise is that the owner came over to our table and was horrified at the nachos that were given to us. To be clear, he was not horrified because they sucked...he was was horrified because there was so little cheese on them. Perhaps he thought the cheese would cover up the suck? No cheese could cover up that much such, good sir. So, he grabs the plate of crap nachos, sprinkled on two gallons of cheese and brings them back along with an apology. Okay. Here's the upsetting part. He then chews out the poor man that made the nachos within earshot of us. Not cool, dude. He was only doing the best job possible with the ingredients you purchase. I have only been here twice and left terribly satisfied both times. the only reason this place got two stars is because their friday night $20 open bar deal is fun and their nachos were good. other than that, unsatisfied. the first time i went there i ordered french fries three time and after over and hour of asking for them and them continuously forgetting them we got them to give us a free drink and left. telling them to forget the fries and we went somewhere else for them. the next time i went there was last night for a friends birthday for the open bar deal. we left completely unsatisfied because of the bad treatment to us from the OWNER. we were enjoying ourselves because it was our friends birthday and we were several drinks in but no where near too drunk to act appropriately when a drink accidentally got spilled over. the owner came over to clean it up and was blaming one of our friends for spilling it even though we told him repeatedly that it wasn't him to do it. he then back talked my friend and accused him of "Cheating the system" of the open bar. he angrily cleaned up the mess and acted like we were pieces of sh** for spilling a drink. I mean come on. it's a bar. drinks get spilled. get over it. you chose to own a bar and offer this deal where people are no doubt going to drink a lot. this pissed us off because several of us work in the restaurant and customer service business and no that that is absolutely no way to treat your customers. As young 20 somethings we are able to control ourselves better than the owner of this establishment who is at least double our age. He about lost our business right there. There is no reason to back talk and blame your customers for things that are mistakes and then for things that didnt even happen. A little while after another drink was accidentally spilled. We took that as our key to leave while it was cleaned up. But while we were waiting for a cab, one of my friends, who is a girl might i add, was cornered as she left the bathroom and yelled at her for being disrespectful for spilling drinks, so she of course said that it was an accident and that these kinds of things happen at bars. At this point, she was mad because he was insulting us as customers for an accident and took that opportunity to tell him that this isnt the first time he had been directly rude to her when she had visited the bar. The last time for her they were threatened to be thrown out a half hour before closing time even though it wasnt closed yet, and that he was going to call the police on them. It turned into a lot of exchange that I don't exactly remember that should never have come out of the mouth of a customer service professional. That is no way to keep customers. I personally am in the field of customer service. "The customer is always right" if you want to keep customers. There is no reason to blame, disrespect and yell at a customer for an accident. Especially something that happens quite often at any establishment that serves drinks. It was quite an unexpected and unpleasant experience and we will very likely not be going back there again. read more

Under new ownership the food is great. Ranging from Chicken Marsala to New York Strip Steak We had the Lemon Chicken which was cooked perfectly. Combine the great tasting food with attentive wait staff made for a very enjoyable evening. In addition the prices were very reasonable. I've been going to this bar since I started at southern in 2010. The beer selection is great at least twenty taps! And on top of that every Friday open bar seriously what's better that that. My friend and I end up here almost every night we go out. They always have drinks specials that are better than any bar in the area. Definitely worth giving it a shot.
