The grits was a dried pancake of substance- no sauce. My friend ordered , a chef, ordered the cod. Her dish was too salty and then she found a plastic string in her food. I've reviewed Heirloom before. Our 7/4 visit is noteworthy because it was a home run on all counts. I've always liked this comfortable space and it's always clean. The waitstaff is serious and helpful. Our party of four ordered Eggs Benedict (2), Wild mushroom omelette, and Tuna Melt. The entrees were done perfectly and served promptly. I am suffering with back pain and shifted in my seat to be comfortable. I said nothing in the process. I was shocked when the manager tapped me on the shoulder and offered a pillow. Was in the area and their lunch menu looked interesting so made a reservation on OpenTable for 2:00pm and went for a late lunch. When we arrived they said that they were no longer seating in the main dining area (even though they had taken our reservation and lunch is supposed to be available until 2:00pm) and we could only sit in the bar area. Didn't think it was a big deal so we went ahead and sat at the bar and started looking at the menus that had been left there. When the server came over, she took those menus away and gave us the lounge menu which has a much more limited selection. That was annoying as the items that we had wanted to try were no longer available to us. So perhaps because they wanted to start the cleanup of the main dining room a little early, we couldn't order the items that had been part of the reason to come to the Heirloom. We ended up ordering the Lobster Toast (which was ok, wasn't too much to it), Crispy Maple Brussels Sprouts (very good) and the Heirloom Fries (not bad). We went for Sunday brunch at Heirloom and it was not a special experience. It took about 45 minutes for our food to arrive which by itself isn't necessarily bad--we've certainly waited that long for food at other restaurants and had a very enjoyable time. But to make a long wait enjoyable, a restaurant might offer coffee (and refill it), perhaps some juice, maybe a sweet roll to pick at, perhaps explain about the local events that are making things busier than usual, and check back often to make sure everything's OK. At Heirloom they sat us down, ignored us for 10 minutes, took our order, swung by the table to drop off some unsolicited ketchup about 20 minutes later, then brought us our food about 25 minutes after that with not so much as a refilled water glass in between. There are restaurants that try to create an experience that people want to come back to, and there are restaurants that are more "transactional"--serve people food and send them on their way. Heirloom is part of a hotel, so perhaps they're not too concerned with making people want to come back. They know most of their clientele will soon be traveling back to their home towns never to return. That's certainly what we'll be doing. read more

Should have looked at the reviews BEFORE going. Local family said let's go here, it's good. WRONG so disappointing, they won't be back either. It started with the server going to seat a party of 4 at a 2 top, that should've been the first sign. Server was horrible, we asked for lemons, twice, finally we went to bar to get them after 20 minutes. She took our order we didn't see her again until 15 minutes after food was dropped off......then she brought the catsup after we were done eating, at that point drinks were empty long before she came by. Had to track down another server to get the check and cash out, because we never saw her again. Several other patrons were also having to walk up to other people to get their checks. Severe lack of training and unprofessional attitudes. Our lunch guest wanted an omelette, but with peppers instead of mushrooms and the server said the chef is really particular about his food and he doesn't allow changes. That speaks volumes about this restaurant. Slow service, slow kitchen, over 1.75 hours for a marginal dining experience.........and can't order what you want? I really wanted to like Heirloom -- the whole farm-to-table concept sounded right up my alley. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to the promise. First off, for a place that promotes being fresh and thoughtful about ingredients, it was disappointing to find out they use vegetable oil for frying. Not exactly what I expect from a restaurant that leans into the "local and sustainable" image. On top of that, there were basically no viable gluten-free options. When I asked the server, it felt like an inconvenience just to get a straight answer. If you have any dietary restrictions, don't expect much help or flexibility here. And honestly, the service was terrible. Cold, inattentive, and gave off a vibe that I didn't belong there. I know I have a certain look, but I could definitely feel myself being stereotyped -- that kind of judgmental energy kills a dining experience real fast. Between the poor service, limited options, and disappointing use of ingredients, this place missed the mark completely. The vibe is very modern and sleek, perfect atmosphere for college students and young professionals. I had a passionfruit mimosa, oysters and lobster toast. For dessert I split an apple crumble with a friend. As a note, this restaurant adds anchovies to the top of their Caesar salads, just so you're aware (in case you don't like them). I came for breakfast, and I have to say that I was a bit disappointed. I had the avocado toast, which was fine, but underseasoned, and the egg was a bit undercooked (even for sunny side up). The portion also seemed quite small for the price, and the side "salad" was just a pile of dressed greens that weren't even cut into bite-sized pieces. I watched two other tables pick at the pancakes, and the potatoes that I saw looked completely bland and unseasoned. The service was also surprisingly slow, even though they didn't seem very crowded. I arrived in New Haven at nearly 9PM on Super Bowl Sunday. The streets were quiet and my stomach was growling. The kitchen was close to closing but they graciously gave me one minute to put in an order. I chose a burger and was glad I did. It was a very good burger! Came for brunch yesterday and it was okay. The service was hit or miss. Everyone was nice it was just a little weird and when it was slow, it was slow. I love that they have a separate brunch menu which I was having a hard time finding in downtown New Haven. We got a few things to share so let's get into that. First the Warm Ricotta: it was ok. I think it was missing an acid or something to it. It was just one note, and lacked a punch of flavor. The Eggs Benedict: also alright. Got it with lox which was good, and so was the egg, but I didn't like the bread it came on. I think it was a biscuit... it was just so soft and wasn't a great texture for the whole bite. The side salad it came with was also a little sad, but I liked the dressing. The pancakes: best dish we ordered. Great size and tasty. Cooked well. We got blueberry which I wish there were more in there. I recommend getting a side berry bowl because that's what we did so we could have more fruit with it. We ended up pouring the rest of our berries on top which was much better. Having said that, we actually ordered a berry and a fruit bowl. The berries were good and the fruit was ok. There were the standard honeydew, cantaloupe, pineapple and grapes. The melons were tasteless but not the resturant's fault. Not a bad experience! read more

However, the pasta the chicken sat on was terrible, the pastry that the beef Wellington was wrapped in was under cooked, the potatoes were watery and 'gritty', the carrots were cooked and seasoned well but had that mildew/moldy smell/taste that carrots can get. The server/ waitress was great, but her support servers were not great - bordering on rude. The environment was great. We REALLY wanted the meal to be awesome but we left feeling disappointed with the food - except how the chicken and beef were cooked. Very nice hotel restaurant on Chapel Street in New Haven. Close to Yale, theaters and nightlife. Food and service were both excellent. More beef on the menu than we typically prefer, but sufficient options for the vegetarian and pescatarian. Abundant seasonal cocktail options and a very enticing wine list. We had a very nice dinner here the week of November 25th when most students are on break. Accordingly we had no trouble getting a reservation. Atmosphere is modern and spacious. No loud music playing so we could actually enjoy a conversation over dinner. We will certainly be back. Valet parking is an option. There are also several parking garages nearby if you prefer DIY parking. FYI - Harmless panhandling is a regular activity on most of Broadway, College Street and Chapel Street in New Haven. We're used to it, but it may be a surprise to visitors from rural or suburban areas. Don't let that keep you away from dining and nightlife in New Haven. read more

we went to heirloom for an early dinner for a friend's birthday, and the staff was very accommodating! they served us 3 different desserts for a complimentary birthday treat: a caramel ice cream, a pudding, and a chocolate cake, all of which were great, but the caramel ice cream and chocolate cake really stood out for being both flavorful and decadent. for an appetizer, the burrata platter was great though they didn't give us nearly enough pita for the amount of toppings provided. the arugula was well-seasoned, and complimented the fig jam perfectly. all the pasta servings were pretty large, and the lamb ragu and pasta pomodoro were both very filling, but nothing super special - missing a jenesaisquoi. the salmon was very interesting - it was cooked very well, with a perfect crispy skin and flaky/buttery flesh. the pairings with the salmon did not necessarily go very well together though. it came with a wild rice, kimchi (very random!), squash, and an herb butter. each individual component tasted good, but i feel like all the flavors did not create a harmony and were just kind of random. the restaurant itself is very nice, as it is situated in the lobby of a hotel, and has wonderfully big windows, providing the dining space with lots of natural light. overall, heirloom is just a decent american food place, but nothing too special that i would come back for. read more

I was so excited to go to Heirloom, the menu looked great and the space is beautiful. We got there for happy hour and had a drink at the bar then moved to our table. My spicy margarita was yum. I ordered the steak frites and my friend had the salmon. When it came to me, I noticed the steak was barely warm so I asked the waiter if he could warm it up and he agreed. I dont usually complain but I love steak frites and steak should be hot. When he brought it back, you can tell it wasnt medium anymore, they cooked it too much and now it was tough. The fries were not crispy as they usually are with steak frites although they had good flavor. The chimichuri sauce was delicious. A place like that should be offering a better culinary experience--hot steak and crispy fries should be the norm anywhere. My friend liked her salmon and said the temp was good. I would go back b/c the space is beautiful and they have a great menu but I will not order the steak! And if Heirloom wants to make me a new steak frites I will gladly take it and update my review--acknowledging that they made it right. I think when you eat out at a restaurant, you are taking some sort of risk and need to accept that meals may not always be what you had hoped and at the same time I think if I am spending my hard-earned cash, the restaurant should also take some responsibility. read more

Absolutely abhorrent experience here last night. We had standing reservations for 6 people, made well in advance. Upon arrival, we were brusquely told by the hostess that they had "overbooked," therefore we could not be sat. After much back and forth, we were finally placed at a table that could barely fit 4 people and told that two chairs would be brought over, (they never were). After twenty minutes of no acknowledgment, and essentially begging for a table, we were finally moved to a larger table in back, (there were also five open tables in the area where we sat, so unsure how they were overbooked to the point of trying to turn us away). We practically had to beg for service. Our waters were never filled, drinks took over 20 minutes to arrive, no bread was given after it was requested, and when it was finally brought over, we had to ask again for olive oil or butter to consume with the bread, as none was brought over. The service was so horrendous, the waiter acted like he was doing us a favor every time we had an interaction with him. He never checked in with us, and whenever we asked for another drink or something to be brought out, we waited an eternity for whatever had been requested. I must add that the restaurant was NOT busy at this time; the service was just extremely inadequate. I would like to reiterate that the first drinks we had came out at 8:54 for an 8:00 reservation. The food was plated sloppily as well, with a massive fry just sitting on top of one of the pasta dishes that came out, sloppy! and lazy! Overall this was extremely disappointing and I will certainly never be coming back again. The entire staff was rude and indifferent to the fact that we received terrible service and also had completely tried to invalidate our standing reservation. Horrible. I put 2 hours on the parking meter and the wait took so long, despite there not being a lot of people there, that I nearly had to go put more time on the meter to avoid getting a ticket. Sadly, the food was not worth the wait--or the price. The chowder was good, but nothing else was good. The tuna melt was bland, the lamb on the grilled cheese tasted more like sloppy Joe mix, the salads were underwhelming, and the fries were cold. Came here for the first time for an event. They had a nicely set up private section which had plenty of space and was quiet. For apps they set up different cheeses, fruit, vegetables and crackers. I appreciated that they brought out gluten free crackers. It was all fresh and tasty. I even got to try the baked ricotta, I'm used to ricotta having a more sweet flavor but this was made more savory so unsure how I felt about it. Then to start I ordered the Caesar salad which had real anchovies on top. For my entree I had the roasted chicken breast which came with a grit cake and snap peas in a miso mustard vinaigrette. When I first saw the plate I was a little didn't in the size of the chicken, was on the smaller size however when I broke into it I was pleasantly surprised. The skin had THE perfect crisp to it meanwhile the chicken itself was tender. It was cooked to perfection. For dessert I had the dark chocolate fudge cake which came with salted caramel gelato. A contemporary restaurant in the heart of the Yale area. Great spot for cocktails with both a bar and cozy lounge. The cocktail list is refreshed for the seasons but you can always get top-notch martinis or my personal favorite pisco sour. The food menu is fresh and usually contains some healthy farm to table choices. Seafood choices are usually my goto with the salmon or great seafood stews. However, the steak frites is a classic item that always pleases. The service is awesome with both the bar staff and the servers are friendly to talk to. We love Maria who is awesome! We visited New Haven on one of the hottest days of the summer and the heat was so oppressive we really didn't want to travel far for dinner. Sipping on ice water in the hotel lounge, we did a search for restaurants in the area and this one came up right next door and had a good looking menu. The best thing we ordered was the warm truffle ricotta. Even my mom "little miss I don't like truffles" ate it (granted she avoided the truffle oil which wasn't all that potent) Entree I ordered the lamb cavatelli because every single ingredient sounded amazing: lamb, Italian sausage, blistered tomatoes, pesto, pine nuts. But call me crazy there also seemed to be broccoli rabe in it??? which I wasn't as much a fan. Overall I found the dish kinda underwhelming. 3 stars because it isn't a place where if someone is visiting New Haven I'd be like omg you need to go. But it was decent enough for a meal. read more

Staff and servers are very nice and helpful. Menu is relatively small, but everything we got tasted amazing. This place is beautifully designed. I came on a weekday during lunchtime. When we walked up we were told it would be a wait for food because we didn't have a reservation? We made a reservation online and it was ten minutes from when we walked in and we still waited. So I'm not sure what the point was. I asked if we could be seated in a less busy corner. I was told no because they needed those tables for special events. There was another party that was dining there for lunch and I asked if they were dining for special events and they said no. So I was like okay... The food was pretty good, not overly salty, but filling. The quinoa bowl was a good meal that filled me up just enough. My favorite were the crispy potatoes. They were very flavorful and baked so well. Even though the food was good, I don't think I will be back because of the "off" service. read more
