Went here for the Connecticut roller derby afterparty. Food was mid, perhaps because it was "party food". Penne with meatballs, salad and chicken tenders. Plus there were skaters with diet restrictions. I ate to be polite but did not enjoy the food. Loud, annoying live music that played boomer stuff so the crowds were older gen xers and drunk boomers. I drove up to Longley's for a friends birthday and to see this band. It's essentially a bar restaurant so go in with moderate expectations. I ordered an Ahi Poke Bowl. What I got was clearly a seared tuna salad. Most Poke bowls have rice in them. The salad itself was fresh and the tuna was well prepared. It said the dressing was Ponzu but I know that it was pure Soy as it was so salty. Ponzu has citrus and a sweet and salty finish. But it was ok. My friend had a burger which he did not recommend. Most people I saw were eating finger food which is probably your best bet here. It was so busy the staff couldn't keep up, but they were super friendly. They need to build a wall by the entrance so the band members aren't in the entry way, organize the stage and move that ATM machine! Came here for a fundraiser and the food was good. The meatballs were clearly homemade and good. They had a fish salad that was very good. The stuff mushrooms had plenty of flavor and the coconut shrimp was fried but not greasy. They have a nice private room on the right side of the main entrance with tables set up and a connecting room to where the food was. The staff was friendly and helpful. Longley's, formerly Allegra's, was a disappointment. When we arrived there was no staff member around to greet us. The bartender looked at us but never waved, said hello or came over to help. After several minutes, someone finally came over and told us we could pick where we wanted to sit in the dining room but it could not be a "big" table. Mind you there was only one other table seated and of course we ended up right next to them because that is where the "small" tables were. Our waitress was friendly but service was slow. For food, we ordered the nachos supreme and pretzel to start. The nachos had half the cheese that was melted and the rest straight out of the bag. They forgot our chicken we asked for as well. The pretzel was good though. For meals, I ordered the chicken Italiano wrap with well done fries. The chicken was dry and the fries were so well done they were inedible. My husband ordered the steak and cheese panini with tots. He enjoyed his sandwich but the tots tasted like they were straight out of the bag, no seasoning and had freezer burn. We live close by but have never been here. We decided to try it on a friday, late afternoon for an early dinner. We had about an hour to spend, so hoped it would be quick. We walked in and it was very quiet. No one behind the bar or seating walk ins. A few people were at a table playing keno. We sat ourselves and waited. Seeing no one for a bit, we were thinking it may have been an mistake to stop in. We decided to head to the diner instead. As we began to walk out, some came over and stopped us. She apologized saying she was in back printing up the specials menu. We sat down and ordered. Bella, seemed to be the only one working outside of the kitchen. Being that is was early before the dinner rush, we let it go. She was bartender and keno payout person, as well as server. Our food didn't take long. We had ordered steak and cheese egg rolls, to compare to a favorite at another restaurant. They were delicious! Crispy and cheesy. Definitely worth it. Bella continued to be very pleasant and timely with bringing our food. My husband got a tuna melt. It came with bacon and orange slices on top. He was happy with it. I got the chicken cesar wrap. Color me impressed! I knew the service would be outstanding, but I didn't realize how good the food would be! My bartender, Bill, was an old shipmate of mine in the Coast Guard when we were stationed together in Boston. Bill took care of me quickly & we had a great chat about the restaurant. I really enjoyed the Mediterranean salad w/shrimp, everything tasted fresh & there were no wilted pieces in my mixed greens salad, that's always a win! I didn't shoot any pool, hopping back on the road to hit NYC for a bit. I didn't realize that they had such a large outdoor seating area, they also offer a banquet room, pool table, jukebox, Keno & scratchers. We had a private party at Allegra's on Friday the 13th for 20 ppl and I can't tell you how impressed we all were with the service and the food. The two servers left us wanting for nothing, they were fantastic! Now for the food. Since we were entertaining from out of town we wanted to mingle and just do heavy apps, we ordered 25 to 30. The food came out staged perfectly. They served 20 very loud and opinionated people and every person loved everything. These folks know food. This place is truly excellent! We came into Allegra not even intending to buy food, but the staff and atmosphere were so warm and welcoming. Everyone greeted us so warmly and our waitress was incredibly kind and friendly. Already pleasantly surprised by the Cafe, we ordered some simple chicken nuggets and chips. My god! They were LOVELY. The best chicken nuggets and fries that we have ever consumed. We did not speak about anything other than the food we were eating for the duration of our meal, and afterwards too. My husband and I dropped in for lunch after a boat tour of the Thimble Islands. We were starving and since we don't know the area, took a chance on Allegra's. From the looks of the outside we were expecting average bar food. But we were very surprised at the quality of the food. My husband had the Patty Melt and I had the Chicken Caesar Wrap. We were so pleased with how tasty this food was. I especially was impressed with the wrap. Every wrap I've ever had has been OK at best - but this was really delicious. The chicken was freshly cooked and the dressing light and very flavorful. I should also mention our waitress was really lovely. We love Allegra's! Today we treated ourselves to their New England clam chowder. They serve it in a sourdough bread bowl, but we opted for a regular old bowl (watching the carbs?). It's SUPERB clam chowder, oh-so-creamy with tender clams & unexpected scallions & bacon. I'm still full, three hours later! My man really liked the lobster wontons,, too. Their outdoor seating area is so friendly & pleasant, and their servers are beyond nice! They have weekend specials that all sound worthy of a return trip. Very filling and half price during happy hour Monday - Friday 5pm-7pm. I also liked the environment. Dim lighting is a romantic setting. It's also the place to go to feel casual or formal. And they have foods that are formal and casual. The 3rd quarter hit (20-10) for $800 and the owner didn't pay me and refuses to. No rules attached to this pool beforehand. Nothing. This owner Paul Allegra, is claiming after the game began, that I can't win back to back quarters. My numbers, 0-0 hit the 2nd quarter as well. Apparently, after a few drinks late in the 3rd quarter when it is obvious that my number is going to hit again, the owner changes the rules in the middle of the game. Doesn't just look sketchy, it is. I won that money fairly and everyone knows it. This isn't how it works. EVERY SUPER BOWL POOL ACROSS THE NATION PAID 0-0 TWICE EXCEPT PAUL ALLEGRA! Much different food than the Marine Corps Birthday.(November 10th) Steak tips tonight were horrible(small) along with the wings(bourbon and garlic Parmesan). The wings were pink in the middle. What a lovely surprise! Stopped in with my husband for lunch, had no idea what they offered, thought maybe just Italian by their name, but I was SO wrong! I rarely order things and find that I love everything - even the food I pick off my husband's plate, and , honestly, every single thing we ordered was perfection! And, we ordered a lot - read on! We couldn't make up our minds since the menu was very eclectic, so, we ordered.... Macaroni with white cheddar cheese, mixed with sweet corn and topped with crumbled bacon and toasted panko with a touch of chives. Was very light, creamy and the flavors exploded! I then had their baked acorn squash - which I was wary of because sometimes restaurants make it with nutmeg or cinnamon (and too heavy handed) or it's watery. Honestly, this was the best acorn squash I've had in MY LIFE!! It was baked, yet tender and had a slight apple-cider, buttery wash that was to die for! It had a light, delicate flavor, so I knew it was healthy, yet, this could've been dessert for me too! Perfection!! My husband had their big beef burger (I'm a vegetarian so at first was even more skeptical about what I could eat there) and it was HUGE - he said it was the best burger he's had in a very long time. The fries were made in-house and I was eating those too. Plus, I'm kind of a fries, especially sweet potato snob, so I ordered a side of those for me....again, and not to overuse the word but "perfection"!! Hot, crispy with just the right about of sea salt. Then....I had their spinach, artichoke dip with multi-colored chips and the dip reminded me of dips found at family/friends homes during the holiday season that always tasted so fresh that I'd sit by it all night! Also, the macaroni and cheese came with a choice of soup or salad and I chose their Clam Chowder to bring home to my son, as it's one of his favorites and he said.... "where did you get this, it's one of the best I've ever had." And, he's picky! Just had to express on my joy in finding this little gem of a place in Branford! Where do I begin to tell of the Nightmare my girlfriends and I had when we visited this place last night.....Well, when we arrived we stood at the door waiting for several minutes till Finally a waitress came over to greet & seat us. (We should have RUN then!) We sat inside until we realized that it was So Dark in there we couldn't even read the menu! (Mind you it was still light out when we arrived!) So we asked to sit out on the patio which they obliged. We get out there, people are Smoking which is Totally disgusting to me, but fine we stayed out there. Our waitress came over took our order and off she went. Then we sat there enjoying our drinks & chatting it up until we realized that quite a bit of time I had passed and No Appetizers! The waitress swung by and asked if she could get us anything, we replied "Um yes, our appetizers!" She said, "oh I'm sorry there's a mix up in the kitchen and you will NOT be getting your appetizers before your meal!" Huh?! What?! Mind you we now have been waiting at least 45 minutes!! She asked if we still wanted them? I'm thinking HECK NO! But my friends said Yes so I went along. Anyway, food FINALLY arrived. I ordered a Panini sandwich. As soon as she put the plate down I look at my sandwich and its TOAST!! That's No Panini, but because I was hungry I just said, "Whatever! I'll eat it!" One of my friend ordered the rib eye which was Overcooked! The other chicken, which was COLD! Both of them had veggies on their plates which were also COLD! Halfway through our meals, (which I only ate Half of my "Panini!!") our appetizers FINALLY arrived!! Woohoo, NOT IMPRESSED! I was Done! Then We WAITED & WAITED!! No Waitress! When she did come back we asked for the check! WAITED & WAITED AGAIN!! She came back, asked us if we wanted any dessert or coffee? We said No! Can we have the check please?!! WAIT & WAIT AGAIN! Finally the checks arrived, Thank God I wanted the hell out of there! But that wasn't happening anytime soon! I looked at my check and realized they were Charging me $1 Extra for mushrooms & sautéed onions, which were Part of the App dish! (If you know me you Know I would NEVER order mushrooms!) So I asked the waitress about this. She said she'd find out and get back to me. She comes back & says, "So the appetizer comes with the mushrooms & onions but they charge you extra for each one, soooo." I said," So What?!" I didn't order these items! These items are part of the dish so how can you Charge Me for them?!" I said, "I am NOT giving you my credit card until these items are Removed from my bill! Get me your Manager!" In the meantime she had taken my friend's checks and returned with their receipts. When she walked away to get the manager we noticed she Charged my friend MY BILL!!! We're like, "What the heck?! Are we in the Twilight Zone?!" Finally the manager arrived very hurried and Not very polite! We explained our situation. He grabbed our checks and snatched my credit card from where I had it tucked away. He comes back. Says, "Sorry about the mix up. Here's a coin for a Free Drink." As an event facility for small and medium get togethers allegras is great. The prices beat all local establishments and they'll make the buffet menu to your liking. You can also order off the menu for events or Paul will plan out special menus people can order off of. I like the penne a la vodka and steaks and burgers especially when I eat at the bar. It's a decent night crowd for drinking an hanging out, no troublemakers. Another plus is that there's a ton Of parking in the front and back. If you're having a birthday party or graduation or whatever you would be foolish not to call here first you'll save a lot of money and get a quality product. read more
