An anticipatory craving for fried seafood inspired us to leave the house on a frigid early spring afternoon. Our destination was Lenny's in Branford. Our hopes were dashed upon arrival; the parking lot was jam-packed. It was between lunch & supper time so we thought we'd have a non-crowded experience. On to plan B: Tommy Sullivan's for burgers & beer. The dinner specials were about to be announced & serendipitously both fried oysters & scallops were two of them. We ordered both and were not disappointed--the scallops were delicately breaded & sweet, the oysters had the perfect crisp crunch & flavor. Came here for the first time after living in the area for 30 years. It was a fundraiser and was pleasantly surprised how good the food was. This is a local establishment that has many loyal customers, especially during Saint Patrick. They had eggplant rotini , it was delicious. They also had stuffed mushrooms. That were very good. Had dinner with friends last night there, originally were going to little pub, wait was crazy. Then we remembered this place. Ambiance was awesome, Shawn Sullivan met us at the door, when does that happen? We had Reuben's, pastrami sandwich, swordfish all were outstanding! We ate outside, the wait staff was super! Attentive, always there! The girls had pumpkin expresso martinis and my friend, Lou had a sangria and I was the DD. The drinks were awesome, even though I was the DD I did try them! Ok so I might have forgotten to take pics before we dug in... We were in town for a quick fb Marketplace pickup and had no idea where to go. Was in the mood for pub food so we landed here. The patio was a really nice spot - place was empty because we arrived at 4 for dinner. The food is very reasonably priced and our server was wonderful, food came out quickly. It's nothing special or amazing but it was good enough. My son enjoyed his tenders and my crab cakes were all crab next to no breading at all. Where I think they could improve dramatically is in the sauces. The wasabi dipping sauce for the shrimp was very sour and had no real depth; same for the crab cake sauce. It was just a sour mustard flavored sauce. The cheesy garlic bread was a tad too dry and the butter garlic mixture was just off somehow - it sat on top of the bread and the garlic was a little overpowering after the fact. With some minor tweets I think the food could be really quite good. Regardless, if you're looking for a simple meal and a drink, this place is just fine. read more

A real old-fashioned Irish pub! This place reminds me of Ireland, though it's in the center of Branford. We sat in a comfortable booth. I can't say it was exactly quiet as folks were having a fun time at the bar, but service was great and the waiter was friendly and prompt. My Ceasar salad was delicious with homemade croutons and well prepared dressing. The clam chowder was fresh and filling. By the time I ate my sandwich, I was full, but the meat was tender and the cheese and fried onions added that melt in your mouth flavor. My husband and I both ordered a corned beef sandwich, with a different side, and it was packed full of meat and the flavor was very good. The side of potato salad was also good, not too much mayo and the fries were nice and crispy. It's smaller inside than I expected but the food was good and the servers were friendly. Last minute decision to find an outdoor patio for lunch. Drove past Tommy's and mate and I both agreed to go. We were greeted with a big hello, huge party going on inside and most tables were filled, worked for us, we wanted the patio. Wait staff came out immediately and got our drinks, giving us extra time to make our meal choices. Did have some difficulties deciding what I wanted but finally came upon the choice for the Mackenzie burger, and I was not disappointed. So good and full of flavor. The Mate ordered the scallop special and reported it was perfect, I'm assuming it was due to the fact that he inhaled it. A definite place to go to for good food and socializing. read more

SO...tonight during our first date night in mannny months, We we're having a great night at a restaurant that My husband has been going to since he was a child, My husband excused himself to use the restroom, when he walked into the restroom there was a paper towel roll in the middle of the bathroom floor, My husband tripped over the paper towel roll, when he fell he tried to catch his fall with one hand, the back of his other hand hit a glass framed photo, the photo fell and the glass cut his hand inside the (webbing of his fingers) and the (side) of his knuckles. A Waitress knocked on the door and when My husband came out she asked Him "why did you punch the picture". (Instead of asking if he was okay) My husband said "I didn't punch it, I fell, I tripped over this paper towel roll (as he pointed at the roll on the floor). My husband tried to stop the bleeding, We paid for our meal and left. My husband was bleeding for at least 30 minutes before he was able to stop the bleeding with pressure. A few hours later, He called the restaurant to talk to the owner or manager to complain about the waitress who asked "why did you punch the picture" instead of asking him if he's okay. Because her response was unprofessional and she clearly needs lessons on customer service. The manager/owner "wasn't available" and they told Him he would get a call tomorrow. A half an hour goes by and My husband gets a call from the cops saying that the restaurant called the cops and that He is banned for life from the establishment . the level of unprofessionalism is mind blowing. (You can clearly see red lines on the back of his hand (shadowed area) showing that he back handed the photo while trying to catch his fall-that doesn't happen when you punch something) also if you punch something your knuckles would be cut and swollen-which is clearly not the case as shown here in attached photo. His cuts are on the side of his knuckles & inside the webbing of his fingers proving that he didn't punch it. read more

For us, Tommy's Sullivan's Cafe was a PERFECT solution. We went to hear carolers at nearby Stony Creek Brewing. We had a big group (12) and about half an hour prior to the carolers finishing (around 6pm on a Saturday night) we all agreed: we were famished. And we wanted to keep hanging out. I did a quick search for a spot nearby that was casual and had great American fare (burgers, wraps, sandwiches, and the like). Within minutes, my husband called Tommy's and was told they had a big party wrapping up and the would hold the table for us. It was destiny! With a decidedly low-key vibe, this place was abuzz with holiday frivolity. People were welcoming and it was palpable that high spirits were abounding! Now to the food and drink! All the men in our party opted for black-and-tans and the ladies had J. Lohr cabernet, sold by the glass or the bottle. I enjoyed a pastrami sandwich on rye and sweet potato fries. Both were outstanding. Two members of the party (including my husband) ordered their meatloaf, which is apparently one of the most popular items on the menu. Both of them cleaned their plates...which is saying something because the portions are generous! The service was great...by that I mean friendly, attentive, accurate, and collegial. This is a small Irish pub with some outside seating. We were a party of 17, so I called ahead to make sure they could accommodate us and they did, as long as we sat outside. Having a few people with walking difficulies, I was happy they have a parking lot and a ramp to the door/deck. I was told ahead of time that this is a small place with limited staff and was asked to come early. We arrived for dinner between 4:30-5. Our waitress did her best and we didn't rush her. We took our time and enjoyed each other's company. She checked in often and was great with orders being thrown at her for drinks and such. I have to say no one had anything negative to say about the food! Everything was delicious. We started with fried squash blossoms. They were so good we ended up eating 3 orders! Crabs cakes were delicious. Nachos were awesome. Buffalo wings so good, and we are particular about our wings. These made the cut. Definitely worth it! Lots of people got burgers which looked really thick. No complaints. I had the summer salad, which was fresh and delicious. My mom had the ribs and left nothing behind except sticky fingers! My husband loved the monkfish. He had never had it before and said it was delicious! Fried oysters were a hit. Wasabi salmon was finished off by a 14 year old. I guess it was good, too!! Finished up with some oreo cheesecake. I cannot say enough about the staff being friendly and super accommodating. It was a beautiful night for the deck. We will be back. Had Another Delicious meal on the lovely spacious patio at the bar. I Loved my ginormous Summer Salad with Blackened Chicken! The salad was fresh mixed greens but it was Loaded with fresh strawberries, nuts, sweet cranberry raisins, numerous cheeses and a super Juicy Blackened Chicken with delicious rub! He had the short stack of ribs which were very tender and perfect! Never had a bad meal here. This place is super cool indoors as well... very old skool Irish vibe inside! Very nice staff as well. I really enjoyed my dinner, as did my sister and mom, although I did think the two glasses of wine and one spiked seltzer were a little costly. I was surprised that our server did not provide water at the table too. The reason for the two stars, however, is due to the unfriendly, ungrateful and cold disposition of the team, most notably the owner's daughter, Maeve. My sister congratulated her on the restaurant's 45 years in business. She appeared quite bothered by the sheer nature of being spoken to. Her response to my sister's pleasantries was "What, do you need something?" She was not at all appreciative of the compliment and without even a 'thank you' turned and walked away. Despite a good meal, I don't think I will give Tommy Sullivan's my business again. It's all about customer service for me. read more

So I wanted to place a take out/pickup order on Friday nights I had company up and they weren't too hungry We wanted to just be able to grab some appetizers/finger food to have and Tommy Sullivan's is not far from my house very very close. And I can't believe that most places on a Friday night are still closing at like 9:00 p.m. or at least the grill by 9:00 p.m. when we have sporting events taking place for instance like my friends wanted to watch the game 7 of the Islanders at my place so I was SOOO Happy when I heard they were open until 9:30 and I had called at 10:00 after 9:00. So I / we ordered one order of the crab cakes which were okay but they're like deep fried They're not like I guess your normal crab cakes that most places maybe don't deep fry but they're good and crunchy I get the sauce there some kind of sauce that they normally would put on top I got it on the side but I have to be careful with greasy stuff. We got an order of potato skins which technically is two potatoes cut in half so I'm still trying to think if it was one or two orders but I believe it's one order and they're big potatoes and they're very smart They put the bacon underneath the cheese so it's not like some of them are being jipped like when you go places and some places you'll have one potato skin with a ton of bacon and some have like none The bacon was nice well done crispy which I didn't have to ask them to do that which after the fact I was like man I should have asked but oh well and they melt the cheese on top and give you obviously sour cream. And then we ordered wings we ordered buffalo wings.... 2 orders of 12 They also make barbecue ones and I think another crime but each dozen we got the buffalo they were not so hot that you would like me to drink a gallon of milk They were perfect and also with those they were cooked very well where I've been places where the wings are almost like pink on the inside and the skin is rubbery No not these They were really really good & they gave me ranch & blue cheese sauce since we had people who ate one people who ate the others. And she said they closed at 9:30. I was freaking out since I had never been there before & it was dark even though I pass it a million time. I got there at like 9:40-9:45 there were a few people sitting outside finishing up drinks and a couple of finger foods and the door that said enter here was locked and I guess they saw me so somebody came out told me where to come in & I apologized immensely for being late and they would like no big deal We have your food It's here like we're not seeing any more people obviously or taking orders or cleaning up the restaurant So all of that came to like $55 and I left a $10 tip to thank them. Great little find for us! Wonderful appetizer and cold drinks. My only recommendation and hopefully this can get back to management is tonplease keep the nachos on the menu permanently. I placed an order for two trays of ziti with marinara for a benefit dinner and had called to confirm last night. The woman on the phone could not find my order which was a little concerning but I was told that the manager would call me back in a couple of hours. I called back a day later because I hadn't heard anything since I called the night before and left my name and number for the manager to call me back again. 3 hours later I finally got a call back from the assistant manager only to find out that they would be unable to fulfill my order because of a mix up with the owner. I am extremely frustrated because my event is a few days away and now have to scramble to replace the food that I lost. I found this encounter extremely unprofessional considering the order was placed on Monday and I didn't find out about it not being fulfilled until Saturday. read more

I never really wanted to go here but I got dragged in one day, it just didn't look like a place I wanted have dinner. The food is actually really good. The soups are excellent, homemade and hearty. The burgers that passed by looked great. I opted for an italian style spaghetti dish and my friend picked the prime rib. Both were excellent. The staff was very friendly, a little bit too friendly at times, but that never hurt anyone. I drive by here on my way to work, so I've always been curious about this place. I recently had a craving for shepard's pie so I stopped by here on a weekend afternoon with a friend. He said his wings were alright. My shepard's pie, however, was completely underwhelming. It was a giant bowl of ground beef with some vegetables mixed in- the kind you get from stop and shop in a frozen bag with the diced carrots, green beans and corn. I've never had a shepard's pie without onions, or a crust of mashed potatoes; there was just a spoon- sized dollop of mashed to the side. I ate the potatoes in two bites and was left with an ocean of ground beef and stop& shop veggies. To be fair, the ground beef was pretty good. Oh boy went here a few weeks ago & was so disappointed. I'm giving two stars for the service which was very good, considering they were mobbed that night. Worse fried shrimp I think I ever had. Dry, over-cooked with tartar sauce that was the consistency of JUST relish. I literally had to spoon it onto the shrimp! My bf had the pork chop special that was very small in portion size & part of it was under-cooked & too pink to eat. Their house salad was still on-point with cheese & cranberries, & their awesome ranch dressing. The best part was the French fries.
