We were staying in the area and found the hare and the hound on Yelp. Then menu looked good and the reviews were good. So we made a reservation and came for dinner. The food was awesome, I definitely recommend the pound town wings. They were cooked perfectly and the sauce was delicious. The staff were friendly and it is a cool place inside. I am not sure if I'll be in this area any time soon, but if I am, I would definitely stop back in. read more

My friend and I were in the area but are not from CT. We saw their menu that they had a beef Wellington and at the very end of the description it said "deconstructed" so I called to check with that meant. The hostess, who was on was very new, and I don't think she fully understood what I was asking. She ended up telling me that, Yes it was a normal beef Wellington. Cool, so excited, don't see those often. We get there, I order it because I already asked for clarification and didn't think I'd need to ask a second time. As we were waiting for our food, I saw some dishes come out from the table across from us and the waitress said, "Here is your beef Wellington". I realized that it was a concept of beef Wellington, but not a traditional beef Wellington, which is what I'd been worried about. We hadn't seen our server in a while so I went over to the bar and let them know that I wanted to cancel my order because it just wasn't what I wanted and the price tag was $60. I've been willing to pay that if it was what I had my heart set on, but it wasn't. They said they would cancel it. In a little bit, someone then came over, not our waitress, to tell me that I will be charged half of the price of the beef Wellington because I canceled it and it was already made. And of course, I was not OK with that. I once again explained to them that I had called and asked if it was a traditional beef Wellington and was told that yes it was. They said that the hosts are not trained on the menu so they cannot answer questions on them. I then asked what is the point of having someone who is untrained on the menu answer your phones because sometimes people are going to ask questions before they choose to come to a restaurant. I refused to pay the $30, she stated she would have to call the manager back because the manager was not on premises that day and see what she could do. In the meantime, they brought out the beef Wellington that they made and tried to entice me to eat it and I of course said no thank you. Finally, they told me I didn't have to pay. I ordered the stew appetizer. It was very small but tasty, and I was pretty hungry at that point so I'm glad I ordered it. Not sure I'd try this place again, but maybe if I lived closer. Not having a manager on premises really made it tough, it was a massive waiting game to get an answer, and I've never heard of a place blame the customer for their knowledge gaps. It's pleasant enough with Irish background music. Tables are clean. Waitstaff is very pleasant and patient since it was our first time here. At first the pub pretzel amazed us with the size. However, the sourdough was very dry and first bite almost seemed too crunchy and dry. The bangers were very good. The sausage is mild and the roasted Brussels sprouts were done well. The filet mignon was good. The au poivre sauce was good. It was my first time having it. I liked both sauces with it. A little pricey, but given the economy, not out of mind. After a day of antiquing in Putnam, wanted to try somewhere new. we opted for The Hare and Hound. Its a wonderful Irish Pub atmosphere with a very nice menu of both Irish staples balanced with typical Americana. i went for the Reuben which was stacked with thick slices of corned beef. The fries were fresh cut and the pickles are made fresh on site. My wife chose a staple of bangers and mash. This dish was accented with brussell sprouts. I dinged the coffee shop up the road not realizing it was an issue the entire street has. There is nothing more annoying than trying to eat with bees and flies. The food was excellent‼ Our appetizer was unique and fully homemade. A potato flight consisting of very large homemade tater tots, homemade chips, and homemade fries. With three dipping sauces. It was so Good. Next I had the Tipperary steak tips with colcannon. The steak was cooked medium and was a nice size. Colcannon was so creamy & flavorful. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was so disappointing that I felt compelled to share it. I attended a bereavement luncheon at The Hare and the Hound on a Monday afternoon. The family had apparently told the restaurant to expect around 25 guests, but closer to 50 people attended to support them during an incredibly difficult time. Instead of handling the situation with compassion and professionalism, three different waitresses approached members of our group asking if we were with the bereaved party. After we said yes, we were told we would have to pay for our own meals because the restaurant wasn't going to be able to accommodate their "regulars" that day. What made this even more confusing was that the outdoor patio still had plenty of available seating, no one appeared to be turned away, and the restaurant ultimately had a full house on what is typically a slower Monday afternoon. Whether the family paid for our meals or each guest paid individually, the restaurant was still being paid. The repeated comments made us feel like an inconvenience rather than valued customers. The most upsetting part was the complete lack of sensitivity. We were attending a luncheon for a grieving family after the loss of a young man. This was not the time or place to make guests feel unwelcome. We were even told the manager would come speak with us, but that never happened. I can only hope the immediate family never learned how their friends and loved ones were treated while trying to honor someone they had lost. I've never felt the need to leave a negative review before, but the attitude and lack of compassion shown by the staff were deeply disappointing. I will not be returning, and I sincerely hope the restaurant reflects on how situations like this should be handled in the future. read more

What a true Irish pub! Loved the atmosphere and the friendly staff! Brussel sprouts were unique and delicious! Sweet savory combo bacon, fig jam, apples and crispy sprouts. The flavors danced on your tongue. Wished we had a few more sprouts. The Cuban Ruben was also a delicious flavor combo. I expected the sandwich to be warm but it was cold. The house made corned beef was perfection (lean, no fat and super flavorful)(wished for a tad more) slaw, fresh homemade pickles all very fresh and delicious! Don't pass on the house made chips, salt & vinegar. These were a delight! We loved it there and will definitely be back. The place had a great crowd and clearly a favorite for many locals. For some reason, word of mouth was not complimentary but I decided to develop my own opinion and I'm glad I did. The Hare and the Hound is a great Irish themed pub located in the Quiet Corner of Connecticut. You will get a warm, comfy feeling right away and that is always the best! I had to lead off with a proper pint of Guinness. What a nice surprise when it was topped with a shamrock. See the photo below. How cool is that! Great service and special touch! The food was very good. I enjoyed the excellent Guinness Stew along with the Irish Nachos. The nachos had a little too much craft ale cheese sauce but they were still very good. Everything we needed we had to wait and find our bartender who was mostly busy talking at the end of the bar with her coworkers. On an absolutely gorgeous, cloudless, magical day, took the convertible to The Hare and the Hound (HH). It's been on my food bucket list ever since Yelp friend, Jason, gave it 5 glowing stars last year. 48 miles away from where I live, and GPS took me through about 10 towns, on numerous back country roads / routes. Farmland, orchards, rolling meadows, manure for sale... all the best sights and scents. Finally arrived in Putnam, which is a cool little town. A bunch of pubs / restaurants share a free muni lot, which was totally packed. Nice patio seating, and inside was handsomely appointed...dark wood, etched glass, cool lighting. Stacey welcomed me, and provided menus and water. I opted for a Yuengling and was debating the fish and chips or the cod dinner. Stacey deftly steered me to the fish and chips. But in lieu of the slaw, I asked for colcannon, since so few places offer it. While waiting for the food, listened to some interesting Irish music over the sound system (I vaguely remember the words "Rover from Dover"). The food was excellent. A generous piece of cod, perfectly breaded and fried; the FFs crispy, hot and nicely seasoned; the colcannon very hot and very tasty. Stacey is a definite rock star. Very affable and efficient, and a mainstay since HH opened about 4 yrs ago. In honor of departed friend, Ken "the Kid", toasted him w one of his favorites, Tullamore Dew. One quibble. Jason's review showed two nice pieces of beer battered cod. It seems they've cut back to one. Still, I will be back to try some of the other interesting menu items. We were in the area at the local antique shop when we stumbled upon this restaurant. We were there the day before St. Patrick's Day so they had someone outside playing bagpipes, which was lovely. We got inside and the atmosphere was fantastic. There was just happy people everywhere. They had a DJ playing. They were doing karaoke. The waitress was phenomenal. I wish I could remember her name. She's very knowledgeable. Recommended a few things. Now to the food was amazing. We ordered the french fry flight which I believe was a special. I've never seen them before we had to have them. They were delicious my friend ordered the potato leek soup. I've never had it before amazing. My friend and I then ordered the Irish grilled cheese and the melt, but we added chicken to the melt. And then we shared they were splitting half so it was easy to do. My other friend ordered the Guinness stew again delicious all the food was amazing. I didn't have a bad dish. I highly recommend this place especially around St. Patrick's Day. They seem to be completely hopping and everyone happy so I imagine this place is like that all the time. I've eaten here several times and it never disappoints. Last night my friend ordered the crock of Irish Stew with mashed potatoes and soda bread on the side and I ordered bangers and mash. Both meals were delicious, and the Scotch deviled eggs that we had as an appetizer were amazing as well. Atmosphere is really nice - quiet enough for a conversation, but still fun with Irish music playing in the background. On weekends, it can be crowded, especially when the Putnam Business Association is hosting a town-wide event, but last night we were able to get a table without any wait. The surrounding area is really cute with several other interesting restaurants and shops, and there is plenty of free parking nearby. My husband and I drove out to Putnam to find a specific antique shop, and found there to be such a charming little town. We spent a lot of time browsing in the shop and we're getting hungry when we found this place directly across the street from a big parking area. We love Irish food so we figured we would try it for lunch. We walked in at a perfect time, it wasn't overly full but definitely getting there! Very kind young woman greeted us at the door and after being seated and getting our menus, there were multitudes of options! NOTE: show up hungry and you won't be disappointed! A bonus for both of my daughters who are older and they're always looking for places to go that have a lot of options for gluten-free! Our waitress was super nice, my husband got the corned beef and cabbage which was so tender and practically fell apart which was fantastic, not oily at all as is some corned beef. I ordered the stew which came in a charming little handled crock, which came with mashed potatoes and egg grilled piece of Irish soda bread sitting at top the potatoes! The beef was tender, the mashed potatoes, delicious and the bread was a bonus! Our drinks were good as well and of course, what made it even better was some mostly modern Irish music on the speakers. After seeing the menu online I wanted to try it out. Walking up to the establishment and seeing the exterior, I couldn't tell if it was going to be some uppidy place or a legit pub, but when we walked in and the only other people were 4 older gentlemen at a table, I knew it was about to slap. (We had come in on the early side and more people did come in after us). Honestly, if I could give this place a 4.9, that's what I'd rate it. The -.1 is only because I ordered potato and leek soup and although what they brought me was tasty it was not soup. I could only eat a quarter of it otherwise I would not have been able to eat any of my meal. I joked that they were trying to murder me with potatoes. I got their steak tips, the steak potatoes were fine I didn't like or dislike them. However, I am still raving about the green beans that came with them. I jokingly "complained" to our waitress that the portion was too big and I would need a to-go container. My husband got their beef stew and their interpretation of biscuits and gravy and he devoured it to the astonishment of our waitress. Speaking of her, she was friendly and joked right along with me. Took my wife to Putnam last night to try Hare & the Hound. Great ambiance and a friendly staff, fantastic service. What blew us away was the food and drinks. We started w/ the Fried Gold Coins and they were simply perfect. For our entrees, my wife had the Country Style Mac n Cheese. I'm not a Mac n cheese person but I couldn't stop stealing bites of hers. English peas and sausage pieces, truly amazing! I had the Tipperary Tips. Cooked perfectly, the chimichurri sauce was delicious and the mashed potatoes and vegetables were delightful. Both our meals were huge, enough to share and take home. Everything was very reasonably priced as well. Lastly, I have to mention the cocktails. My wife got a Cantaloupe martini, which I've never seen anywhere, and it was so good. I saw some other amazing looking drinks coming out, a spicy cucumber cocktail and a blueberry lemonade that looked mouthwatering. Such a great experience, can't wait to go back and try Sunday brunch. We came here while driving through Woodstock, CT peeping at the foliage. The Woodstock area is so under-rated for fall leaf peeping and picturesque country roads. The only reason it takes a second fiddle to The Berkshires is there are few restaurants and even fewer hotels here. That's where Main Street in Putnam comes into play. The Hare and the Hound is one of the handful of good restaurants in Putnam. I love me a good British Pub and given how rare they are in The US, often we find ourselves dining at Irish Pubs. Here is my breakdown of this place: Food ... 3 stars/5. Sadly, none of our menu items lived up to the description or our expectations. The food was average, at best, although the portions were fairly generous and the menu was creative. Fish and Chips ... batter was incredibly crispy, bordering on crunchy, and slightly overwhelmed the white fish, which seemed fresh. The batter splashed with vinegar held up perfectly and did not get soggy. The chips were mediocre and nothing too special. Overall, this was the best dish of the day. Beef stew ... I was here with someone from Ireland who described the stew as 'bland'. I took a taste and sure enough, it didn't really taste of anything other than a somewhat beefy gravy. The consistency was kind of like a bowl of gravy with brisket-like pieces scattered throughout. Honestly, there wasn't much meat and it was more like a brown chowder with veggies. Pecan Bourbon Pie ... This sounded so amazingly yummy. I think I can count on one hand how many pieces of pecan pie I've had that sucked (and I order it a lot!) ... this was one of those times. It sucked. There was barely any flavor and the flavor which was present was not good. It almost tasted like soaked chestnuts on a shortbread crust. Absolutely not worth the calories. The piece was also very tiny ... in this case, probably best. Atmosphere ... 4 stars. This has a homey Irish Pub feel ... a real Irish Pub and not a fake shamrocks everywhere pub.The place was packed on a Sunday and the tall tables were comfortable and private. Bathrooms had UFC posters everywhere and there is a big bar you can sit at next to the dining area. Service ... 5 stars. Our waitress, though overworked with a ton of tables, remained pleasant and helpful. She navigated the menu with us and gave us suggestions, when asked. She was not intrusive and our waters/drinks were filled without her checking in every couple minutes. The bartender also pours a mean Guinness with a shamrock stamp on the top. Overall, 4 stars. We stopped in for dinner during our visit to the Quiet Corner of Connecticut. We were seated immediately and our server was at our table quiet fast. She was happy, friendly and offered suggestions which we really appreciated. For an Irish Style Pub it was pretty quiet which was nice. We started with a pretzel and cheese sauce that was a bit crunchy on the outside and very tender on the inside. The cheese sauce was excellent. For dinner Mr. B had Fish and Chips to which he said "the best fish and chips I have ever had in the states." He wouldn't order it again on this trip as he said it would have ruined his favorite of the trip. I went light with a potato soup and it was perfectly seasoned, hot and quiet satisfying. As a Glocester resident I am always looking for new and GOOD restaurants & when my husband suggested this place last night I looked up the reviews & was shocked to see tons of 5 star reviews and that we have never tried this place!!! How did I let a place like this- slip through my fingers? We didn't feel like going out per say, so we decided we would grab take out from here. Initially my husband ordered the Motherclucking Waffles ($18) and I ordered the Melt ($16) & added Chicken (+ $6) which comes out to $40 even- so when the hostess said our order was $58 we were like ? What?!?! Woahhh! So just out of curiousness we called them back & they informed us the prices on the online menu are not correct. The tater tots my husband substituted for his cole slaw were $6+, & my sweet potato fries were $3+, which still only comes to $49, but then they told us the chicken was more then $6 as well, so not sure what they did/are doing regarding their pricing.... Did they offer to honor the prices? NO! They should have but they didn't!!!! Especially since we were NEW customers! NOT A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION!!! We actually ended up getting rid of the $6 tater tots & the hostess hadn't informed us of any of the up charges for these items! We kept the sweet potato fries, bc it was only an up charge of $3! I have no problem paying extra for stuff, but they should TELL Customers this before offering & asking them what they want as sides as they initially made it seem like it was included with the meal. So needless to stay we got off to a rough start..... When my husband finally got back in the car with our take out it smelled really good, when we got home I was excited to dig in! My sandwich had AMAZING FLAVOR! I loved the "fig jam" and cheese sauce and texture of the topping's- apples & some other stuff - my only complaint was- it was VERY soggy when I picked it up- on the side that had the sauces- but it was take out so I can't really fault them on that. I'm not a French fry person AT ALL- so I was surprised that I ate the entire order! That's how good they were!!! My husband got the chicken and waffles & he loved it. He didn't save a morsel for me to try, but that's ok- cuz it just gives us a reason to return. So now that I know this restaurant is close by and has really good food, I love the creativity of the menu! Everything is really unique and different. Despite the menu pricing issue & the blasé customer service, we will DEFINITELY be back! Just an FYI: The prices should be the same across the board!!! We didn't make a big deal out of it but working in the restaurant industry part time when I was in college- I've had people REALLY FLIP OUT regarding prices- and get really aggressive (people do not like when you mess with their money) and I wouldn't want this to happen to anyone, especially since pricing is typically out of the wait staff's control!
