Some things were Out- "Stand"- ing. The tuna tacos from the appetizer portion of their menu. OMG the best I've ever had. Three of them with lots of diced soy marinated cubes of fresh tuna, mango slaw and wasabi crema. I will go back and get a double order next time. Outstanding Steak sub with fries. The main reason I went was for the ribs. A half a rack served with awesome best potato salad and a few pickle chips. The ribs were pretty with a nice smoke ring. They were not very warm when brought to the table. I wish they had been warmer.and they had far too much dry "rub" on them. The seasoning was very present and a bit too much for me. They are served dry rub style. Another plus -- The atmosphere was great, large outdoor area, pet friendly, lots of social distancing but still enough picnic tables to support a good amount of patrons. Staff was friendly, good drinks, clean bathrooms and indoor dining available.

My husband and I came here for dinner on Thursday night for our 2nd COVID date night out since March. We called on the way to ask if they were busy and we were told that had some tables open in the outdoor area. We were promptly seated when we arrived and it was nice to see that there was a bottle of hand sanitizer on each of the tables for patrons to use before, during and after their meals. There was an acoustic performer outside which typically would have been annoying, but his music was gentile, peaceful, not too loud and actually very enjoyable. Great job sir. We started with a blackberry mojito and a beer. For appetizers, we ordered the Caulibomb (which was fantastic and inspired us to try and recreate it at home later this week) and the fried cheese curds (that were good, but like super, super salty). My husband got a burger that was really big and filling, he enjoyed it. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich. It had a nice flavor to it, but not exactly as I expected. It was made of what appeared to be thigh/dark meat, not white chicken breast. It lacked mayo and upon my 3rd to last bite, I discovered half a sliced grape. Then I remembered that it was supposed to have grapes in it...so either it lacked grapes too or the batch wasn't mixed well. Both of our orders came with french fries, reminiscent of McDonald's, delicious, but definitely like theirs. Our 2nd round of drinks were better than the first. Oh and this is key... They have a swing outside, right next to some of the tables. Any child who apparently has visited this restaurant before knows about it, will leave their families/tables and migrate over to it to play. During our meal, we witnessed 6-7 kids (from 3 different tables/families) use it alone and together, all unsupervised and UNMASKED, coming uncomfortably close by our tables. I wish the servers would have addressed them to put masks on. That or perhaps their parents could have not been as oblivious. So needless to say, if you are looking for a soothing night out at this time (like we were since we have 2 kids under 5 years old at home), don't be seated near that swing!!

Sad to see The Stand gone . Good luck to the owners, and all who worked there . I enjoyed the live music The Stand brought to the area.

I originally planned to sit at the bar since I was dining solo, but it was packed for happy hour (always a good sign). I ended up in the dining room instead, and honestly, it worked out great. Service was quick and attentive from the start. My server, Christina, checked in on me several times without being overbearing, and I really appreciated how often my water was refilled especially since I skipped alcohol this visit. For food, I went all in: a dozen oysters, bang bang shrimp bao buns, and salmon sushi rolls. I finished with the crème brûlée cheesecake (which I already knew I loved from their sister restaurant). Standouts for me were the oysters, the bao buns, and that cheesecake absolutely delicious. The sushi rolls were fresh and flavorful, just a bit oversized for that perfect bite. Overall, a great experience with solid food and attentive service. I'll definitely be back maybe next time I'll snag a bar seat!

My review addresses only the many vegan dishes here, so unless you're vegan you might want to skip…read moremy review. Nellie's is a surprising vegan-friendly restaurant in an equally surprising dockside location. Off the beaten path from downtown Branford, it is easily overlooked amid all the large pleasure and fishing boats both moored in the Branford River and dry-docked on land and in colossal hangers. Given its maritime environment, you'd expect its menu would be heavy with fish and sea animals, yet it also offers many vegan options, in fact more vegan dishes than vegetarian dishes. Don't be dissuaded by its nondescript name more appropriate for a horse, as in "Whoaaaa, Nellie." As evidenced by a streetside old signage, its more decorous former full name was Nellie's Green Restaurant, but somewhere along the way the word "Green" unfortunately got dropped from the name. Fortunately, its many vegan dishes were not dropped from the menu. They speak fluent vegan here. In addition to being marked with "V" for Vegan, the word "Vegan" stands out as the predominant first word in the names of the vegan dishes. That's Vegan 'Crab' Cakes. Vegan Layer Dip. Vegan Ceviche. Vegan Tacos. Vegan 'Crab' Cake Wrap. Vegan Burger. There's also Avocado Toast, Guacamole and Chips, several entrées marked "VO," meaning Vegan Option by omission, and two salads and several side dishes, for instance Blackened Tofu, that all happen to be vegan without making a big show of it. I recommend the Vegan Burger, which is a house-made black bean patty, not pre-fab Beyond Impossibility mock meat. It comes by default with potato fries, but faulting deep-fried food I was able to upgrade my burger with one of the several vegan side dishes, in my case the Grilled Zucchini, which was delectable. My soul-mate soy-mate lunch-mate ordered the Vegan Tacos and a side of Blackened Tofu, and she enjoyed both. The spacious outdoor patio is larger than the ample indoor dining area, is fully sheltered from the blazing sun or dripping rain, and is perched right alongside the river, though during boating season the river is so cluttered with boats that it can hardly be described as picturesque. With the recent closure in nearby Westbrook of our dearly beloved all-vegan Shayna B's by the Sea, we intend to return to experience both Nellie's and the harbor during their quieter seasons.

The menu had a nice variety, but overall, I wasn't very impressed. It seemed like our large group may have put some stress on the kitchen. One friend ordered wine that didn't smell or taste fresh -- the staff did open a new bottle and replace it, which was handled well. However, our meals took over 30 minutes to arrive, and when they did, they were warm at best. I ordered the steak frites with a side of spinach. The steak was undercooked, the fries seemed like leftovers, and the spinach was drenched in oil to the point that I couldn't eat it. Overall, it's an okay spot, but the experience felt off. Maybe it was just an off night for them.

It had an outdoor bar, fire pits, TVs, and even a live band the night we were there. The problem was they seemed to be severely understaffed. Our waitress was not only serving all the people on the patio but it seemed like she was also working inside and behind the bar. As you can imagine this delayed pretty much everything we ordered. And when some items came out incorrect, it meant even longer wait times. My wife ordered steak tips (or something like that) and ordered it medium. Most pieces were RARE so instead of asking to have it warmed up we took it home to cook because we knew everyone else would be done w dinner by the time it came back out. Overall, everything I tried was just ok. Nothing really stood out as far as the food went. The barrel aged mezcal Negroni was delicious tho!! Would come for a game to hang out on the patio and have drinks if I was in the area. Overall it was just ok, nothing exceptional and nothing that has me want to recommend this resturant to others.
