I stopped by High George for pre-dinner drinks with my husband and some friends when we were staying at the Blake Hotel a week or so ago over the Fourth of July weekend. High George is on the 6th floor of the hotel, and it has great vibes - with retractable windows looking out onto New Haven, plants, and tropical vibes! We didn't eat - we had a dinner reservation - but we wanted to get drinks at the bar after seeing it when we walked to our room (our room was on the 6th floor)! The service was great. I'll be honest - I'm more of a wine girl. Cocktails can have too many ingredients and be a little busy/fussy for me. But I really enjoyed their Grapevyne cocktail (vodka, limoncello, lillet blanc, green grape, and lemon shrub) - it was bright and not too sweet and very balanced. (They do have wine, but everything about High George said - "Have a cocktail!") Overall, a fun bar - great views and atmosphere. Hi George? More Like Bye George! If I could give zero stars, I would. My recent attempt to dine at Hi George was an absolute disaster from the moment we walked in. The staff was unbelievably rude, acting like they were doing me a favor by even acknowledging my presence. Forget a friendly greeting; I felt like an inconvenience. And don't even get me started on the table. It was horrible--cramped, wobbly, and felt like an afterthought in a forgotten corner. It was so bad, in fact, that we didn't even stay for dinner because it was so bad. We simply couldn't stomach the thought of spending another minute in such an unwelcoming environment. Save yourself the headache and your money. You should go to literally anywhere else in New Haven. This place is a hard pass. read more

Service was awful. I had dinner in the restaurant on the main floor and had the most wonderful experience so I was very disappointed that upstairs was very different. The servers acted as if you were doing them a disservice by being there. The food was sub par at best. I got the smash burger and it was cold and the bacon nearly chipped my tooth it was that rock solid. Also the drinks were underwhelming especially for their nyc-esque price tag $$$$. It's not very high and it's hot as balls in the summertime. Not much to see up there at night. Drinks are sub par. Seems kind of over rated and the server we had clearly hates her job. She threw my club soda at me (when I had asked for sparking water) anyways, it's loud and the tables were a mess and needed some TLC. Have any of you ever wondered what it feels like to be treated as if you're Beyoncé? Well I do everyday and my dreams came true when I was asked to come back and dine at High George. Kim K, who I believe is the GM or Manager, reached out to me via Yelp and invited me back to try the food since the last time I was there I only had drinks. I told her I'd be there Thursday and when I arrived, they had me and my guest on the list and Kim K seated us herself. She was just the sweetest person I think I've ever met and her staff took care of us without missing a beat. I got the lobster roll and mushroom skewer which were delicious As we were eating, they kept bringing us more food and for desert, we were treated with the Whoopie pie & the coconut ice cream which was made in house. Everything was PHENOMENAL!!!! The service, the food, the drinks (two glasses of Sauvignon Blanc) and the ambience. Perfection to the max. I can't wait to come back. I landed pretty late, and this was like the only restaurant open. But I loved it! It's soooo cute and cozy in here! It's like a winter wonderland :) I had the hot chocolate, salmon dip with crackers, charcuterie, and celery root and leek soup. The others at my table had the cheeseburger and chicken schnitzel sandwiches. The hot chocolate was a teeny bit too salty, but it was really chocolate-y! The food was pretty delicious! The cauliflower in the charcuterie plate was a bit too vinegar-y, though. But the service was phenomenal! Our waiter was super attentive and sooo polite! He was such a gentleman :) read more

Came here just for drinks at the bar and was honestly blown away. Who knew a little piece of NYC vibe was on the roof of Blake Hotel?!?! Decorated as a winter ski resort, it was so cozy. We stood at the bar which allowed for lots of people (and food) watching. If you have never experienced raclette before, get over to High George now. The most delicious cheese, so ooey and gooey. You won't regret the calories. Drinks were also ON POINT. I highly recommend the specialty drinks. High quality alcohol and experienced bar tenders. Also the cutest names for their drinks. New Haven is lucky, real lucky, with what has happened here at High George. We have CT's best chef, Tyler Anderson of Millwrights with his 6-time nominee for James Beard Foundation's Best Chef Northeast and Top Chef fame, whipping up delectable bites in the kitchen, and Tim Cabral, owner of my favorite speakeasy cocktail bar in New Haven Ordinary and running the cocktail program in Porron & Pina in Hartford, another Tyler Anderson Spanish-themed restaurant. The dynamic duo is back at it again and I must say, what an incredible rooftop space over at the Blake Hotel. Really tastefully decorated, with a modern chic look consistent with the high-end boutique hotel style of The Blake, the rooftop will be the outdoor space to be this summer in New Haven. I posted pics of the menu to give you a sense of the food and drinks offer, a mix of creative and well executed small bites coupled with equally created and refreshing cocktails. I went straight for the Bold & Boozy section and both the OF and Sazerac were great. Everything we got off the menu was really fantastic too, I highly recommend the lobster roll, clam bellies and cheeseburger steamed buns. And my absolute favorite was the beef skewers, which so tender and succulent and marinated in a Korean style kalbi sauce. SO GOOD! I'm sure this place will get packed and it will be tough to get in during peak times, but definitely come check it out and you won't be disappointed! read more

Sadly this is the only rooftop in New Haven and it's terrible. There is no view and the drinks sucked. Worst of all, the service is extremely snobby and rude. I made a reservation on opentable for my last weekend at Yale. My plan was to go for after dinner drinks and dessert. After I told the server that, the attitude completely changed. We ordered two drinks and panna cotta. The panna cotta was gelatinous and disgusting so we didn't want to get more desserts. However, I was willing to spend more money on some fancy drinks. The waiter kicked us out without even asking if we wanted another drink. That is unbelievably rude. Didn't stay more than 40 minutes and glad I didn't. I think they were just mad that we didn't order any food. Has anyone ever heard of after dinner drinks? Usually that's how a lot of rooftops gain business, by keeping customers drinking expensive cocktails. Any rooftop in NYC would let customers stay and order more drinks for way better views. High George needs to get off of its high horse and provide better customer service. read more

APPETIZER: We started with the Tuna Tartar which had a salty lime flavor topped with crema. The tuna was so perfect on a tostado, it was the perfect vehicle. ENTREE: the best sea bass we ever had. Came with 2 so we each had 1, the beurre blanc was delicious and the potatoes were amazing but the fish was heavenly. We also shared the short rib which was unbelievable and a good size for sharing. They came with sweet potatoes. I think between the 2 I would lick the sea bass though. **ATMOSPHERE** 4/5. AESTHETICS 5/5 COMFORT 2/5. Probably wonderful during any other month besides summer, but we were sitting in a greenhouse at 5:30pm 85 degrees and pouring sweat. I'm not exaggerating... it was so hot. There were some fans but they did nothing. The entire glass ceiling with the beating sun... was not well thought out. No AC. Maybe when the sun goes down it's better, but I would never go back in the summer. **Gluten Free*** 5/5. Everything is marked GF and all the options are mouthwatering. **COST** 3/5. Came here last night because we wanted to check out the new rooftop bar. We came in through the lobby and the hotel staff said we could go upstairs, but the bar closes at 11 (it was about 10:50). We got upstairs and the bar was hopping and the hostess said they close at midnight on weekends. Guess the hotel staff should also know that... They have a unique cocktail menu with their own creations. I had a 'paid vacation' which was a little more bitter than I expected, but still pretty good. A friend got a more tropical drink with some coconut that I enjoyed a bit more from the sip I had. Waiter was friendly and drinks came out relatively quickly. I was really excited for this rooftop bar. Upon first glance over the railing I was greeted with glorious views of New Haven's parking garages. It honestly is not a great view of anything - it's literally just garages and nearby apartment buildings. It is nice to have an open-air bar, but don't expect cool views. John Davenport's, while fully indoors, has them way beat on views. read more

Had a fantastic date night at High George at the Blake Hotel. The ambiance was perfect. Our reservation was for 8:30pm so the sun had just started setting and it was a beautiful view to then see the glowing moon. My favorite dish of the night was the sweet abs sour potatoes it had a wonderful taste to it. The staff was lovely and very attentive. The front of house manager was also very warm and welcoming. He greeted every table and made sure everyone was having a grand time. Drinks were pretty good, could have been my selection but wasn't sold on it. Cost is around 3.5/5. Should have listened to the review previous to this one. This used to be a classy place to escape to that was different from others bars and restaurants in CT. Tonight was a disappointment. Their menu changed and is now strictly lounge fare. We arrived at 4:59pm and were told they cannot serve until 5pm but we may sit down. We were the only ones there and were brought a menu at 5:10 and then told it was bar service only so we are to go to the bar to order drinks, order food and collect our drinks. The place started to get more crowded and then there was confusion as whether or not there was waitstaff or if we were expected to go to the bar. Poor service, employees did not seem happy. Food was okay for the price. Drinks overpriced at 14 dollars considering had to go up to the bar to order them and then bring them back to our seats. Not only is it a rooftop with a view of the gothic revival architecture of New Haven, but it also has a cool mix of potted plants and succulents lining every surface. Lush! Tonic NA - 3/5: High George offers two non-alcoholic mocktails; one with club soda and one with tonic. The drink was described as being citrusy, with mint and rosemary. Neither my wife or I were too pleased with it: it was quite sour without any citrusy tang. There was a sprig of mint as a garnish, but no mint in the drink at all... sort of a pointless decoration. You can get better mocktails at other bars like Ordinary or 116 Crown, which don't even advertise mocktails on their menus. Paid vacation - 5/5: On the other hand, this was incredible, likely one of the best cocktails I've had. The drink is gin-based with many almond ingredients like almond powder and orgeat. It was incredibly smooth without being weak. The drink is definitely way more than the sum of its parts, which to me is a sign of a great cocktail. One thing to note is that the amount by volume seems quite low compared to other bars. This is actually great for me since I'm not much of a drinker and often leave cocktails unfinished, so your mileage my vary. You're getting less drink per dollar, but I think the quality more than compensates. Pork belly skewer - 4/5: Wife thought it was too salty. I thought it was great, but it's definitely on the salty side. The pork belly is grilled and then seasoned with a red powder (I think it was Japanese shichimi, but I wasn't really paying attention), and each piece is interspersed with a meltingly soft slice of cooked peach. You get three pieces of pork belly and two peaches per skewer for $5 which is on the pricy side for sure. Chicken katsu bun - 5/5: I was very pleasantly surprised by this. The chicken cutlet is very thin but manages to remain moist, which is a very common issue with katsu in general. The seasoning was also excellent, and the bao tasted great. (The bao is more like a split mantou than the guabao which are seemingly everywhere in New Haven these days.) Clam bun - 3.5/5: The clams themselves were a bit disappointing -- overly breaded and salted to the extent that you can't really even tell you're eating clam. However, the bao was very good: it was notably sweeter than the previous bao, which paired very well with the clam and seasoning. The bao itself was lightly seared, adding a little extra caramelized sweetness but without being overwhelming like traditional fried dessert baos tend to be. I'm actually impressed that High George seems to have different types of bao for different dishes; there was definitely a lot of thought put into the menu. Overall - solidly 4/5: Excellent for the most part, but just shy of amazing. I'd definitely come back in the future, but will likely pass on the food for the most part. The fact that High George offers fantastic drinks and solid-but-not-amazing food makes it the exact reverse of Hamilton Park, which makes dinner downstairs followed by drinks on the roof a very tempting proposition. The space itself is also beautiful and well decorated, with an amazing view. Service was great! read more

Who doesn't love a rooftop restaurant and bar?! Apart of the Blake hotel in new Haven is a rooftop called High George , absolutely gorgeous. Good vibes, pleasant staff, and good food and drink. That's a good summer Friday evening if you ask me! I ordered several items off the menu. I started with the crab salad, a few skewers after that such as beef and mushroom. Last the steamed buns were so good! I ordered the lobster and fried calamari steamed buns ! Yummy! I ordered a drink by the name of category 5 which was really good. Overall a good experience. I went back a second time it was so/so the food wasn't that good , possibly bc it was close to closing time. I ordered the chicken cutlet steamed bun, crab salad , and for dessert a moon pie. The staff was a bit sluggish. I guess we all have our days. Def would recommend to others which I have and they had nothing but good things to say about their experience. read more

Being the only true rooftop bar in New Haven, competition is already non existent. High George has become one of those places I'm selfish with because I don't want it to be too popular so that I can visit and not have to wait too long for a place to sit or drink. Their cocktail program is ridiculous, in a good way. New Haven is steadily on the rise for cocktails that are memorable and interesting. Food is served family style though they have small eats on their menu (I love it). Get your entire dinner at Hamilton Park, come here for quick eats and drinks with friends, coworkers. Fantastic place. Came in wondering whether it might feel scene-y, or as though it was trying too hard to be edgy, but it was neither. Really relaxed vibe, despite having a perceptibly more curated, elegant aesthetic than most New Haven spots. The cocktails were phenomenal. Sunrise in Mexico was wonderfully complex--campari and coffee bitters is not a combination I ever would've thought of, but it worked beautifully. Food was great too. We especially loved the steamed buns. The cheeseburger-inspired one was inspired indeed, and probably our favorite. The buns with whole belly clams, and with chicken and caper sauce, were delicious as well. The tuna tartare was solid but unexceptional; same with the shrimp cocktail. The grilled skewers were all quite good, especially the white asparagus, and the smoke coming off the grill filled much of the seating area with a really pleasant aroma. Our waitress couldn't have been sweeter, funnier, or more helpful. We'll definitely be back. read more

It's great for the cocktail scene and it's helping the culture adapt to a more high end, elegant aesthetic. The space is open air, and has a decent view of a decent city. The bartenders there are very friendly and attentive and I will undoubtedly be going back there for cocktails. This rooftop bar has the perfect combination of ambience and exceptional cocktails. Many like this often phone it in with subpar libations to be offset by a stellar view, but not here. The well practiced techniques from The Ordinary have carried over well to both the restaurant below and bar above with smoked concoctions and herbal essences. Very much enjoyed their take on an Old Fashioned and appreciated that Rye was the star of the show (not a Bourbon fan at all). The evening ended well with some Japanese Scotch. I'm not sure what happened to this place. I first came here in July 2021 and it was fabulous. Really great friendly service at your table. It was fresh and beautiful. Fast forward to July 2022 and it seems like a completely different place. No host, no wait staff. You have to order at the bar but no one tells you this so you could sit for an hour wondering why you're not being served. And the bar service is terribly slow. My Aperol spritz tasted like sparkling water and ice. Even the furniture and decor seems tired. So sad!!! I loved this place! read more

The burger, a safe dish to order some would say, tasted as if it was cooked in the residual fish grease of a previous dish.
