Old school tavern. Bill tending bar & making burgers. They have burgers, chips and alcohol. That's all you need. Nice size beef patty on a poppy seed bun, smothered in grilled onions, slice of cheese. DELISH! they also have tomato if you want. I ate it so quickly, I'm surprised I didn't eat the paper plate. CASH ONLY.

Laid back back yard to sit with the pups and drink a few beers and eat delicious burger. Simple but effective.

The Hamburger was delicious...fresh ground beef with freshly grilled onions! The best...juicy & can't wait to return. The Tavern is quaint, historic and comfortable with a warm atmosphere! Loved it! My regrets not taking a picture of our burgers..i got too excited to eat & once i bit into the burger, that was it! Enjoyed every last bite!

Best burger in the city, hands down! Great fungsway with a decor that speaks to the history of our community.

This could be the best burger in New Haven... maybe even Connecticut

Contois Tavern is an old neighborhood bar that opened in New Haven, Connecticut in 1934. It was founded by Walter E. Contois. Local rumor has it that the location in the Goatville section of the city had originally served as New Haven's first speakeasy during the Prohibition Era. Contois took over the bar after the repeal, and it's belonged to his family ever since. They still follow an old school code of ethics. There wasn't a sign outside the bar until 2013, there are no hours posted, there's no website, and there's no phone. Today, the bar is run by Walter's grandson Bill Contois and great grandson Bill Jr. Aside from the occasional brew, Contois Tavern is also known for the food. There's no actual written menu, but one thing they are known for is their cheeseburger; some argue it's even the best in the city. They also grill up steaks and chicken tender cutlets. The meat comes from the Meat House in Branford. Contois Tavern also have a seasonal rotation of homemade hearty soups, such as beef stew, clam chowder and pepperoni soup. Concerning the latter, some customers claim, "You'll never eat another soup!" They even make grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches. Just remember, everything is CASH ONLY. I recently visited Contois Tavern at lunch time after a long morning bike ride. This place has no business being in 2021; it was like stepping into a speakeasy from the 1940s. Besides me, there was a table of elderly Italian men eating cheeseburgers and debating issues. Bill Jr. was running the place on this day. I grabbed a seat at the bar and ordered a cheeseburger with sliced tomato and caramelized onions. It came served on a fresh poppyseed roll. It seemed so simple, but then I bit into it and it was so delicious!! It was so juicy and flavorful; no ketchup needed. I also asked if they had any of the pepperoni soup I heard great things about. Bill said, "Sorry, that's more of a late Autumn/early Winter soup." Oh well; just another reason to come back. I would easily rank Contois's burger as one of the Top 3 in the city (along with Louis' Lunch and Prime 16 Tap House + Burgers). I'll definitely be back!

Nachos: Picture this. You're sitting with your closest friends on a perfectly youthful Thursday…read morenight, because you just couldn't wait for the weekend to begin. You're playing some ridiculous game you made up in an instant, and your laughter echoes through the bar, along with the strangers voices and the blaring music. You walk up to the bar, where a mirror stretches across the wall behind the bartenders, and you catch yourself in it, along with a few lingering eyes. You laugh at the audacity of youth, the absurdity of it, and look at yourself a little longer. You're young. Your hair's long, your eyes are dark, your cheeks and nose are red from the cold outside that has settled into your bones. You zone out at any reflection you catch yourself in, because you can feel the time passing. The bartender finally makes their way to you, and you order a plate of nachos that makes its way to your table on its own. There are so many hands reaching in, and you don't even notice when the table started overflowing with new and old friends. You take the first bite, and suddenly you're gutted. They taste incredible, perfectly flavorful. You have no idea where the feeling comes from. It's mushrooms and salsa, perfectly salted. It's relief and familiarity all at once, like the spark of something new that feels good because it's familiar, like it was waiting for you too. You close your eyes and melt into its warmth immediately. You open your eyes and suddenly, everything around you starts to move. Winter coats pile up on the hooks by the door, then disappear into spring. The patio opens with local indie bands, then closes with the sun coming up. The stool beside you fills up with the Irish guy you had the most awkward first date with that you counted the minutes. Months later you run into him again, and you laugh about it together until your stomach hurts. At the table near the windows, a girl you barely knew raises her voice at you over something out of your control, and you realize you don't want this. You cut her off, and she disappears from her seat. You see yourself passing through time in every corner of the bar. Old friends fade into the back of the mirror, and new ones take their seats in the same booths, laughing at the same jokes. The eyes around you linger as they pass. A guy at the end of the bar looks up every time you laugh. Someone holds your gaze in the mirror a beat too long, then looks down at his drink. You notice every one of them and hold on to none, because you can't seem to stay in the moment. Everything is already passing by while you're still standing in it. "SO?! What are you going to rate them?!" says your new friend sitting beside you, who just found out you write these ridiculous reviews for fun. You realize you seek out nachos the way you seek out love. It's a deep, familiar desire. You keep chasing the first bite that made you feel like this. He's waiting for your answer with a big smile on his face. Your hair's still long. Your cheeks are still red. Nothing has changed, but somehow, everything has. "Five," you say. "Five out of five." All else: I've said enough. This bar is my safe space and happy place. The bartenders are heaven-sent. P.S. I was listening to Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol writing this, hence the drama.

A group of us walked in, and before asking about our IDs, the bartender notices the can in our friend's hand. The bar was loud and he clearly has a mumbling problem or something, but he said something along the lines of "no outside food or drink, you need to leave." The rest of us waited while our friend quickly apologized and stepped outside to get rid of it. I guess he had already made up his mind about not serving us because the closest thing to asking what we wanted to drink was a dirty look from across the bar. Our friend stepped back in, and he muttered something that none of us caught. When asked to repeat himself, we were met with an attitude and he told our friend to leave. Trying to clarify, one of us asked if he was really getting kicked out over a mistake. In response, we were told that our friend was stupid, hard of hearing, and banned from the bar. Obviously, we weren't going to stay without him, especially with a rancid attitude like that, so we shrugged it off and left. The bartenders response? "Oh noooo, we're losing customers," in a shitty little mocking tone. I'm sure the other bartenders are fine, but this guy needs to find a different career. At no point we're we loud, rude, or trying to start anything. Just a stupid mistake and genuine questions met with nothing but bitter, middle-aged animosity. Try any of the other bars within walking distance. Edit: After reading some of the other reviews, probably about the same guy, I guess it's relevant that two of us were brown and the guy he kicked out was Polish.
