If you're looking for Asian food in New Haven, this just isn't the place! I've been here on two occasions, once for jaja noodles and once for mala noodle special during their after hours. The beef with the jaja noodles did not taste fresh, and both times, the food felt familiar, but had some sort of funk. I may be a bit biased because the last time I ordered after hours over Snackpass, Junzi was very busy. My receipt went missing (happened to a few other customers as well), and the staff were extremely unhelpful, making me wait about an hour and a half for supposedly instant noodles. read more

The shop is small, but their menu choices and items are definitely not! This is basically chipotle-style asian fare - noodle bowls or wraps, your choice. I went with the noodle bowl and you get a choice of either thin or wide noodles. Wide noodles is definitely the way to go. You can do half/half with the protein and then load up on all the veggies you want. Tons of veggies = happy me. The great thing is their range of unique vegetable toppings - bean thread noodles, shrimp salt, chive ash, oh the choices!! They also have different sauces to try, so you probably won't get bored of this place for quite a while. Drink choices include unique teas. They also have a late night menu (night lunch 1030pm-130am) that I didn't get to try, but sounds delicious and so accommodating for those late night munchies. Decor is on point, and they sell cute accessories if you're into canvas bags and pins and such. read more

A cute little spot for Asian fast-food! The menu is pretty simple but there are enough choices for noodles, sauces, and toppings that customers are bound to find at least something they like. You can choose a bing (like a wrap) or a bowl with thin cut noodles or knife noodles, and they also have a fun late-night "after hours" menu with reasonable prices. I do think the food looks better than it tastes though! I find Junzi to be extremely salty and some of the flavor combinations are strange together. Maybe I just haven't found the right combination of ingredients for me yet. That being said, I do like how you can add unlimited toppings, and the service is pretty fast so you can grab a decently sized meal rather quickly. Service can be hit or miss, I've interacted with some extremely friendly and generous employees as well as some who sound like they'd rather be anywhere else but working at Junzi. Good choices, even for vegetarians. We actually preferred some of the bing sauces (they will let you sample each sauce if you ask) for a noodle bowl, but the employees were thrown a little when it was requested. The bing sauces are thicker than the noodle bowl sauces, but just tell them to a a spoonful of hot noodle cooking water to the bowl, and you'll mix it up yourself. We liked the veggie add-ins, too. I and my daughter were stuffed after our bowls, but the husband was still peckish afterwards. Good value for the price. Only downside is the tiny, tiny seating space. I don't like many of the stores at the "Shops at Yale" but I do like Junzi Kitchen. It's a noodle and ming bar, that's both fast and affordable. Oh and it's very healthy too! It's kinda like Subway meets Chinese food. To be specific, they claim to focus more on northern Chinese food. Supposedly that's where the founders hail from. Noodles probably don't need to be explained but perhaps I should explain a "ming". It's basically a warmed burrito filled with Chinese vegetables/meat. Oh, and it doesn't contain any rice. Yes, you read that right. Supposedly rice isn't a mainstay food item in northern China like it is in southern China. My guess is that's because of the colder climate. Thumbs up! The food is filling, healthy, and reasonably priced. My advice is when it comes to beverages....get the home made iced tea instead of the small boxed drinks. We were on a trip to New Haven and as a Chinese, I have to try out this place! I ordered - beef and cucumber bing: the beef is so tender and flavored and it brought me back to China instantly! The sweet sauce is what I had with bing as a child all the time and it is the best! The price is also unbeatable - furu tofu knife noodles: the furu flavor is not very strong. Love the noodle and tofu - jaja mushroom spring noodles: I prefer knife noodles to spring noodles. The king trumpet mushroom is great Overall I like the bing better. I have everything taken out and waited a while before digging in so the noodles were not at their best. The noodles are not on the chewy side as well. The staff are ok in terms of helpfulness. I was in a hurry but it took the staff member forever to get everything ready and there was nobody behind me. I must have passed by Junzi a dozen times with long lines, and it seemed like such a cool concept that I finally stopped to check it out one late weeknight when the store was completely empty. Like in any fast-casual restaurant, you go down a line chooses which ingredients you want for a bing or noodle bowl, including the type of noodles, a sauce, protein, and tons of toppings. Junzi lets you pick as many toppings as you want (yaaaaas) without charging for extra, which is awesome for indecisive people like me. They were running low on some ingredients, so I ended up with knife-cut noodles (wide), the tomato egg sauce, chicken, kale, cucumber, potatoes, and a bunch of other vegetables. Surprisingly, everything went really well together. The noodles were a tad overcooked, but went well with the crispy vegetables, and the tomatoish sauce had a pleasant vinegary tang. Maybe it was a weird time of night (an hour before close?) but I will say that the service was kind of apathetic. They weren't really in the mood to explain anything and were more focused on getting me in and out of the door as quickly as possible. I guess when you're located on a college campus with hundreds of hungry students this is to be expected, but it was a little off-putting when I was literally the only customer there. New Haven sure has changed since I did my time here. This is a simple fast-casual assembly-line-style place serving noodle bowls and bing, and it is fast, reasonably healthy, and extremely delicious. I went with wide noodles, sesame sauce, tofu, and a mess of interesting vegetables, and wolfed down the results with satisfied joy. If I had two wishes they would be for a slightly heavier hand on the vegetables and sauces, and for the mushrooms to be treated as a free vegetable rather than an expensive "protein" option. (Also, do mushrooms have much protein? I don't think so.) And if I had a third wish, it would be for this place to have existed while I was in law school; I doubt I would have gone to Yorkside Pizza or the burrito cart ... ever. read more

PheNOMenal. I love that traditional Chinese food with a modern twist is becoming more mainstream. Jun Zi got both the concept and execution right! You have the option between a regular or wheat "chun bing" (1 for $4.50 or 2 for $8.00) or a noodle bowl ($9.00), and much like the down-the-line assembly method that was made popular by Chipotle, you then get to take part in the creation of your meal and choose your protein, veggie toppings, and sauce. Protein options include chicken, pork, steak, mushrooms, and tofu. I've tried the chicken, pork, and steak and absolutely love the pork and steak (the chicken is good too, and it just comes down to personal preference!) It also comes with blanched potatoes. Picking veggies is by far my favorite part of the process because there's just SO. MANY. CHOICES. The plethora of options include bean sprouts, cooked spinach, and daikon, in addition to your more typical offerings. Then comes the sauce. There's 4 different sauces but in my vv humble opinion, sweet bei sauce is bae. The staff has always been helpful and friendly every time I come in (I've been for lunch/mid-afternoon snack on both weekdays and weekends). Don't be afraid to let them know if it's your first time here - they'll guide you through the various options! I've always had the chun bing (1 chun bing is pretty satisfying as a snack/post-workout snack, and I order 2 if I'm feeling really ambitiously), and I've been meaning to try the hand cut noodles. The chun bing wrap itself is the perfect thickness, resembling that of Peking duck, yet still thick enough to hold all the delicious additions without ripping (side note: I would absolutely die if they brought in Peking duck at some point - definitely a wish-list item). OK... 5 star reviews I approach with caution, as I do 1 star reviews.... But stay with it... Junzi is an Asian fast food place. Long and very narrow, I don't think they intend all their customers to 'eat in'. I did, and endured the conversation between two students... well - one on them thought "like" was mandatory after every word! Got a bing.... basically a wrap. I chose the white wrap, chicken, the Chile garlic sauce, pickled daikon, sprouts, and cilantro. Simple, tasty, and more than enough for a meal... if you don't want to eat like it's your last meal. I really thought it was great, the Chile garlic sauce definitely added some kick without being too overpowering, and choosing the pickled daikon also added some dimension to it. For 6 bucks, I think these are a winner. Were I I New Haven more often, I could see Junzi becoming a regular stop. Interestingly, they have a late night menu - 10:30 to 1:30 - bravo! But it's only Friday and Saturday, but hey - that's when you need it! And I have to say, the night menu looks darn good..... I look forward to sampling it should I get the chance! read more

Excellent food. Five stars. If that's all you care about, I get it and you can disregard my review. My gripe is that I called 20+ time to order and the line was busy each time. I prefer this method because my wife has a serious food allergy and I typically have to ask questions about ingredients and how food is prepared. In this case, I was forced to go to the restaurant, order and then wait for my food. Here's the problem: When I arrived there was not one customer in the store and everyone working there was simply standing around. I may be wrong, but it certainly appeared as if they had just ignored my calls and unnecessarily wasted my time. I realize this sounds picky, but I was pissed. This brand new Asian fast casual spot is pretty great. The chun bing rolls are particularly excellent with a range of solid fillings, awesome sauces, and excellent optional additions. The place has a few shortcomings, but nothing major. The noodle bowls here are also tasty, though not as straight up delicious as the chun bing, which are kind of like the pancakes that come with Mu Shu chicken, but thinner and of a better quality. Speaking of chicken, I chose the marinated chicken as my filling and it was amazing. I actually also asked for the braised mushrooms to be put in the wrap as well and this was a good call. The sauces and optional fillings are perhaps the most absurdly great aspect of this place. 4 awesome sauces, fillings ranging from spring onion to sweet garlic to shrimp salt to chive ash (!). I mean, you can tell this place is still getting its footing and the protein portions are definitely a little skimpy, but still, this has easily become my favorite place to eat when I am in N. New Haven. If you do happen to go with the noodles, ask for one of the chun bing sauces on top, as the portion I got was a bit dry. So tonights a dinner in bed night (obvi) and I was pretty excited about this place I lovee oriental style food so I got Junzi for the first time. As you see I give three stars, the food wasn't too bad BUT it was all wrong and besides the bite I took out of a tofu chunk and egg it sort of looked as if they played basketball with my food it was slapped in there with Kobe force... AND it was wrong.I didn't want extra noodles in my custom bowl the other one called for extra noodles which they swapped ‍, then they didn't give me my bean sprouts which I wanted (my bf kindly shared his sprouts with me as you see, so thanks hun u da realest) and I laugh at this but it really is upsetting that there was four little strips of chicken in his bowl that were dehydrated lol . Junzi is a restaurant started up by Yale alumni. They serve Northern Chinese food, which involve bings and noodle bowls. I definitely wanted to like this place more than I actually did though. The restaurant itself is very narrow with little seating but the staff is incredibly friendly! As for the food, one bing is usually enough for me, and I have tried both the pork and beef, preferring the pork and cabbage one. While I opted to choose the premade options, you can make your own and customize it however you like. It's definitely a choose-your-own adventure type of meal. While I can't speak for how authentic the food is or if my tastebuds are accustomed to this cuisine, the food is on the blander side and just lacks a tasty wow factor for me. While I won't write it off, the offerings doesn't make me want to come back anytime soon. I'm intrigued by their Junzi After Hours option though! read more

Sometimes it's hard to distinguish between one fast casual place and the next. Oh, this Fast Casual place does burritos, but this one does taco bowls and this one does poke bowls and this one does Indian dishes. Cool. Junzi is definitely doing something pretty unique and excellent. They recently bumped the prices, which stinks, but I understand they're running on some insane startup venture capital fund where they have to open like 20 of these in 5 years. So. But the food itself is quite excellent. Especially as someone who recently went vegetarian (mostly), their veggie options are excellent. And you can get two of those, uh, bings, for like 9.50, and each one of them is definitely enough for a meal. Plus, they do a great job with their tofu-based dishes. Really excellent stuff. The service can sometimes be a bit up and down, but I get it. I probably wouldn't want to work there, either. Yalies are the worst. disclaimer: I know Lucas, the owner of Junzi but anyway, Lucas is a legend. I'm not sure how he managed to get a lease in this prime location on Broadway to open a Chinese fast-casual noodle and bing shop, but boy I'm so glad that he did. I never thought I'd be able to get $9 knife-shaved noodle bowls in New Haven, with authentic Asian sauces and toppings. The beef protein option is essentially Chinese braised beef shank, and given the quantities of it that Junzi produces every day, it tastes admirably similar to a beef roll that you might get in Shandong or Taiwan or Hong Kong. Lucas also likes to experiment and often opens Junzi at off-hours times for private tastings, guest chefs, and late night munchies, like an awesome extra-crunchy variation on General Tso's chicken and red-braised pork. Sometimes, Lucas will somehow gain access to a temporary supply of a rare Asian ingredient like Buddha's palm, and it will suddenly appear in the vegetable section of the toppings bar. The fridge case at the register is also stocked with amazing snacks and drinks, like smashed cucumber and iced jasmine or rose petal tea, or imported Asian flavors of Lays chips and boxes of Vitasoy soymilk or chrysanthemum tea (throwback to my childhood lunch boxes... lol). If you're a spice-lover like me, there are several hot sauce options at the toppings bar, but there's also always a tub of homemade chili oil next to the plastic utensils, and that stuff is DANK - smoky and way spicier than you would expect. The food at Junzi isn't exactly complex or creative - after all, it follows the typical fast-casual formula of customer's choice of carb + protein + toppings - and I've heard Lucas himself admit as much. The real greatness of Junzi is that it dared to offer unabashedly authentic Northern Chinese flavors and ingredients, and so far it's been a smash hit. Lucas recently opened a second Junzi location in Morningside Heights - so Columbia students can now also enjoy hearty Junzi noodle bowls. I had frequented the one near Columbia University when I rotated through and loved the option to enjoy what I have lovingly deemed in my mind as "Asian Chipotle." The beef bing was spot on as always. And I have enjoyed the knife cut noodles as well. Why is one star deducted? I found that this site was not as clean as the Columbia University site. I love Junzi. You can talk about the concept being like Chipoltle or whatever. The big difference is the quality and prep of the food. Amazingly fresh variety of vegetables. Today I had the pork & garlic chives bing and it packed a punch of flavors textures and nutrition. A perfect compact satisfying lunch. The gunpowder rose tea is a real treat but varies in sweetness. Junzi definitely thrives on its interesting and contemporary concept: Northern Chinese, fast-casual bings and noodles. I've been here a couple of times now, and I've gotten noodles every single time! The place is small and cute. Everything is compact. There is very limited seating. You start with picking a base (wide knife noodles or thin spring noodles?) and sauce (jaja, tomato egg, or furu), choice of meat, vegetables, then garnish. I'm a fan of the jaja sauce and the furu sauce. To be completely honest, to me, the convenience of the location, the "fast" aspect of the restaurant, and the novelty of the concept is the best part of Junzi. I want to love this place as much as everyone else, but I've left feeling slightly unfulfilled every time- maybe I haven't found the right combination of ingredients yet? It's an exciting place for sure- so many options and combinations possible! Next time, I'll try a bing. Just ask for the spring noodles + jaja sauce, and add whatever vegetables you want, and that's de facto jajangmyun. The people working there are pretty friendly, and the decor is bright and nice. It's more of a takeout place than a sit-in place, though. Relatively expensive for what you get, but at least it is a healthy option for lunch or dinner, and that is difficult in New Haven. read more

On a Friday around 6:30 pm in downtown New Haven I walked in, the two people behind the counter were totally absorbed in filling orders (online or phoned in I guess) and did not look up or greet me. Two other people also walked in - no acknowledgement of any of us. we walked up and down looking in at the food arrayed in little tubs behind the counter, from which these the two servers were filling paper bowls. No words, no notice, no we'll be with you in a moment, nothing. The food did not look fresh or appealing in those bins. I walked out - why stay? The other people also walked out. This is one of my favorite restaurants around Yale. The menu is very simple, but really delicious--order either a noodle bowl or a bing, customized to your taste! Everything is relatively cheap, and the atmosphere is so fun, especially during weekends for their "Night Lunches"!! The place really fills up, and they have party music + lights. It's a fantastic lunch date spot and an equally amazing late-night/post-party/drunchies place. I've been here for two-minute grab-and-go's and two-hour meals (and I've left perfectly satisfied every time). I've also heard that the founders are Yalies and that the chef graduated recently/ helped found Y-Pop-Up, which is this awesome student-run pop-up group. It's really inspiring to see Yalies start their own small businesses and give back to New Haven, especially since so many shops around here are controlled by Yale and especially since so many grads head straight to Wall Street. This place will have the patronage of me and my friends until we graduate--and I'm positive this is destined to become a classic New Haven staple/tourist spot. Highly recommend! read more

I've come here multiple times since Junzi kitchen is so hyped on Yale's campus. I've really wanted to like it more - but for some reason, the food has never really resonated with me. I'm usually a huge fan of Beijing street food and bings - especially when they're spicy. However, I've always thought that the tofu is a bit overlooked and the sauces are just okay - nothing special. I've never had anything less than a fantastic experience with Junzi. For dinner, I gravitate toward their wraps. They're exceptionally tasty, relatively inexpensive, and surprisingly filling. I always order two because I think they look small, but they're packed full of goodness and I'm stuffed by the end. My wife and I obsess over their Night Lunch. I'm embarrassed about the number of times I starved myself at (regular) lunch and dinner so that we could get pork belly and chicken at 10:30. It's absolutely delicious. They also does a phenomenal job with catering. They're quick, friendly, accurate, and have a lot of options to fit different budgets. Good for quick casual lunches and relatively healthy bites. I do think that they've been steadily raising the prices of their food, so sometimes I think that Junzi has become too pricey for what it's delivering. It is Asian fusion with a burrito style bing and noodle bowl offerings. Their noodle bowls are warm noodles mixed with lukewarm or cold toppings, so it took me a while to get used to them. Their late-night events are worth going to, and I think they make the best scallion pancakes out of all the Chinese restaurants in the area. The ordering format is similar to Chipotle's where you can either assemble your own custom wrap or bowl, or choose from chef recommendations. Today, I tried the ja-ja bowl. While it does not taste like traditional ja-ja, I still enjoyed their interpretation of it. I do look forward to trying some of their other menu items later on. I am giving Junzi an average rating for no other reason than the price point. What they charge is not commensurate to the quality or the amount of food they give. I mean, it's noodles, chopped vegetables, and protein. If they're going to charge a customer $10, then it'd be reasonable to expect more in terms of proportion. Killer quick-service noodle bar. Walked over a mile during a blizzard to get here as it was recommended so highly. The boyfriend and I both got bowls. I got the pork with basically everything on it and he got the beef. Don't skimp on the chili oil or the sesame sauce. We picked up a lychee drink (delish) and a chrysanthemum tea (weird and perfumey) to wash everything down. The flavors in my bowl were incredibly intense and dynamic. The amount of variety in texture and flavor makes every bite different and more exciting than the last. I was blown away by the quality of this inexpensive counter-service stop.
