Very yummy old school (70s style with some updates) vegetarian restaurant (aka kosher dairy). I was a little overwhelmed by all of the choices on the menu and decided to get an omelette for dinner. I could choose three veggies and a cheese. I picked spinach, arugula, mushrooms, and their house made queso blanco. It came with a few yummy French-fry-style roasted potatoes and one of their famous dinner rolls, which was multigrain and very hearty. Not cutting edge but all well-made and tasty. The bakery items looked amazing but I was full! So I got a piece of their carrot cake, which other customers were raving about, as well as a vegan gluten-free sunbutter cookie. I very much appreciate that they have outdoor seating! They happen to be very close to a smoke shop, so eating outside they just were a lot of people vaping or smoking as they passed. It's also a particularly hectic corner with people going to the theater or for music show. But I am planning to come back while I'm here and to try something else! read more

Claire's Corner Copia - Display case - Vegetarian Near Me - New Haven, Connecticut

I've been eating at Claire's since 1977.. when my mother(not vegetarian at the time) was pregnant with me she ate here religiously on her lunch breaks. I swear that's why I've always loved tofu! And I'm mostly vegan now the past 28 years, and my mother the past 12. This place is a staple in New Haven and testament to their good food for staying open all these years. When Claire's first opened vegetarian restaurants weren't a thing, and over the years the menu has shifted.. but it's always good. For me it's home cooking style, comfort food.. they have their own style. This place was around before everyone was freaking out about carbs.. thank god! I never leave without a cookie and a muffin for later.. they're the best! I recently got hooked on the Sunbuttter cookie, and also enjoy the Lithuanian coffee cake muffin. Soups and salads come with the classic Claire mini loaf! A delicious buttery(is it vegan? don't know) mini loaf of bread, just as tasty as I remember it from my childhood. Their oat milk Matcha Lattes are creamy and they don't slack on the matcha. The service is always friendly and helpful. The menu accommodates vegetarians, vegans, and gluten free options as well. enjoy! read more

I love Claire's! I'm so happy I work right around the corner from here. I love stopping in mid day to grab a smoothie and a baked good, or for a nice brunch with my friends and family! The staff is always super kind and is helpful while I can't decide which special I want. The food is always incredible, fresh, tasty, and made with love. A perfect spot to study or to socialize! read more

Nice store! Cute pride decorations! Counter service ordering and they bring you the food and you clean up after yourself. Very clean and tidy bathroom. Quiche and bread was delicious, enjoyed their frozen matcha as well. My friend adored her Irish breakfast. Was our first stop in on our Jaunt to Mystic! read more

Definitely a must do when you're in New Haven. This café/restaurant is on the corner near a park. It is so cute with homey/comfort/nature vibes. I love the decor inside with the handwritten items, paintings on the wall, wooden tables and chairs, aesthetically and photographable pastries and dishes, and natural sunlight from the windows. The food was superb. Nothing was too sweet or too oily, everything was so natural tasting. I believe everything was vegetarian. There are a lot of vegan options. Even if you're not vegetarian, the portions were large and great value. I personally felt full and had leftovers. I came here for brunch/lunch and had the quiche. Also had the Lithuanian coffee cake, which was pleasantly sweet and perfect texture with raisin-like fruit. The cake is not sweet and the frosting complemented it well. I'd recommend trying this cake. I personally have never had a Lithuanian coffee cake before. I can imagine a lot of people coming here after church, before or after work or as a lunch break, for a date, and to gather with family and friends. If I'm ever in the area, I'd come again and try the other delicious looking pastries. Also, the staff are so sweet. They really know their menu and have a lot of different flavor options for the quiche and drinks. read more

Claire's has a pleasant ambiance and has the restaurant "ego" of a cozy, vegetarian place. But it's a sham. The tables are dirty (where's the Health Department?), the food is awful (think a cold, mushy, tasteless vegetarian burger, served with an unappealing scoop of pasta salad, two paper-thin, round pickle slices, and five cold, mushy, undercooked, roasted? white potato slices, We also ordered the Reuben, which was tasteless, had a bizarre appearance, and we could not discern its ingredients. It was served with a scoop of generic pasta salad, but that was all. The plate looked disarmingly half empty. The presentation was bizarre and awful. This place is priced (shockingly so), and the chocolate cake was a disaster. If you are here to linger over a bowl of soup (which we didn't try) or a muffin, with a friend or lover, it might work. But for anyone with taste buds, this place is all veneer - a Motel 6 posing as The Plaza. Overall, the ordering and pickup process is clunky and not enjoyable, and the fact that tables aren't wiped between customers is very disturbing. The food?!! Inedible!! We felt as if we stumbled upon a tourist trap. It was overpriced, the ordering process and lack of service were stressful, and the food was subpar, to say the least. We spent over $75 on this culinary disaster. But, hey, the lemonade wasn't bad. THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE, CLAIRE, BUT WE WERE THERE FOR ABOUT 1.5 HOURS AND DID NOT SEE ONE TABLE BEING CLEANED. I'LL STAND BY MY REVIEW OF THE FOOD AND SERVICE. read more

Stumbled into Claire's not knowing it was Vegan/Vegetarian and can't wait to return. It's not inexpensive but you get high quality and high freshness ingredients. Staff was amazing. Everything was delicious. I love how they embrace everyone. This place is a gem. I can't wait to return. read more

Since 1975, Claire's has been a landmark of vegetarian dining. Happy golden anniversary to Claire's! Until 20 years ago, vegans had little from which to choose. We could substitute cow cheese only with unflavored blah tofu. But Claire's has changed with the times. Nut cheeses now are offered as alternatives. And the many all-vegan dishes now equal or outnumber the vegetarian dishes. The menus clearly indicate both on the wallboards and online what dishes are inherently vegan and what can be adapted. What's more, its wide-ranging menus are for real. "Out of stock" does not exist in the vocabulary of Claire's Corner Copia. Cornucopia indeed. The many choices can be mind-boggling, even for vegans. It's easy to feel overwhelmed when trying to make choices simply by reading the extensive menus. In person, you are better off viewing the display cases where you'll see some of the standard entrées and most of the specials. WYSIWYG. You can judge these books by their covers. Portions are generous. Expect a filling meal and, if you choose wisely, a nourishing meal. Just don't expect a gourmet meal. The regular menu is familiar Americana. Noticeably absent are soups. Ethnic accents include Mexican burritos and Italian pizza. Little, if anything, is ever deep-fried. Hurray for your health! While the breakfast menu includes one ultra-processed mock meat, several house-made burgers instead are composed of grains and walnuts. Claire's makes no claims about serving natural foods, just vegetarian food. Still, you'll find more natural foods here than at most other veg restaurants. As a favorite lunch spot of the Yale community, the midday noise level approaches that of a college dining hall. Sit by a window where you'll be entertained by the Yale and New Haven crowds parading by, a welcomed distraction from the noise. Except on Sundays, finding parking can be frustrating, so expect a long walk. Also except on freebie Sundays, expect to pay ransom to parking meters. Despite the cost of parking added to your meal tab, you still will come out ahead because, even for cafeteria food, Claire's is underpriced. Staff work behind the counter and in the kitchen that are even more cramped than your seating area. Show them your appreciation through the usual means, your tip. Yet there's no option to add tips to credit card payments, so bring cash to contribute to the tip jar. They deserve it. read more

Unique place! The menu, decoration pretty good and menu pretty rich! One thing that I didn't like, they brought my omlette and I nearly finish of it ( I only eat half anyway it was huge) my husband's order delivered. He wait when I eat and I wait when he eat:) The other thing is I wish I can see the Turkish; "Hosgeldiniz" on the window just like the other languages:) Over all very pretty place. I wish I can try artichoke stuffed and a few other things! Next time! read more

I would love to give this restaurant a five star because staff was so friendly and the food was so delicious and fresh and very healthy. I must've come on a very busy Sunday morning where things felt very loud chaotic and I had to go to the counter a couple of times to get all of the items we ordered. My husband ordered the omelette with whole wheat bread and he said it was delicious. The bread was so dense and fresh. I ordered the tofu scramble, which was full of flavor and fresh ingredients. Lots of vegan and GF items. read more

This was going to be our first meal of the day and we really wanted it to be good. We drove down from Jersey City and realized how popular this place was the moment we walked in. There was a big line, probably because of the rush hour. So, so, so many options, you'd be spoiled for choice. Being a vegetarian, I didn't have to worry about anything being non-veg; from what I saw, everything was veg. We ordered the truffle mushroom burger and the spicy buffalo rice bowl. The food was decent overall, not out of this world, but the portion sizes were good. All in all, a really good spot. And if you have dietary restrictions, they've got options for almost everyone. read more

I loved Claire's! As a vegetarian with food allergies, it is rare that I go to a restaurant where I have more than 2-3 options, max. I was a bit overwhelmed by all of my options at Claire's, but in a good way! They were very cognizant of allergies and other dietary restrictions (kosher, gluten free, etc.) I had the vegetarian BLT, which was very good and I added avocado. The refried beans that came with my friend's quesadilla were homemade. There was a line that moved somewhat slowly, but when I got to the front I realized it was because they were taking such care in getting each customer's customizations. I also noticed that Claire spoke to the other workers with a great deal of kindness and respect. read more

Claire's has been serving vegetarian food for almost 50 years! For decades I've looked forward to visiting Claire's whenever I'm in the New Haven area because Claire's offers a wide selection of vegetarian and vegan foods, bakery, and specialty coffee and tea drinks. Taking metro north to NYC? Claire's! Museum visits in New Haven? Claire's! Visiting family and friends in Connecticut? Claire's! We went for breakfast and ordered the granola bowl--a hearty, flavorful homemade granola, full of textures and flavors served with yogurt, banana and honey and the vegan pancakes with mango (sometimes you just want some mango!) served with real maple syrup. Claire's knows how to do vegan pancakes--the photos don't do them justice. We both had the iced apple pie chai special. Sweet apple flavor and the chai was still spicy. The restaurant itself is bright and cheery; a combination of brick and two walls of windows. We looked at the local art (modern sparkly paintings of Prince, Billie Holliday, and Sinatra) and the New Haven Green from our table and listened to Tchaicovsky while we waited for our food. The counter service was polite and the food was delivered to the table promptly. The lunch and dinner menu include vegetarian and vegan sandwiches (the tempeh BLT is one of my go-tos), veggie burgers, burritos, and traditional items such as quiches and eggplant parm. You will see the bakery in the glass cases as you walk in: scones, cupcakes, pies, whoopie pies, etc, and there are always vegan and gluten free options. Claire's started serving vegetarian food in 1975, before it was a mainstream thing, and there's a reason they will soon be celebrating 50 years. It's one of my favorite restaurants anywhere and I'll look forward to my next visit! read more

Claire's is the oldest continuously operated vegan/vegetarian restaurant in CT that I'm aware of. The sign says 1975. Can you beat it? The location is great. Literally at the corner of Chapel and College in downtown New Haven. It's cute inside. Location and atmosphere are definitely a plus. I am not vegan or vegetarian, but I have some experience with both cuisines. In my visits spanning the many years at Claire's, I would say things are generally pretty good, but don't measure up to the CT vegan and vegetarian spots presently doing things at the highest levels. Recently, I ordered a House Ginger Ale. It was pretty good. Had a very clear ginger flavor. Could have used some more acidity. I added a squeeze of fresh lemon when I got home and that helped. The baked goods were decent. The Lithuanian Coffee Cake seems to have actual sweetened ground coffee in it. It wasn't one of the more memorable coffee cakes I've tasted in recent years, but they are limiting themselves in ingredients. The sunbutter cookie was a thick and dense sunflower version of a peanut butter cookie. It was OK. My son only ate one bite of his half. If I'm rating the food and drink from my recent visit, it would probably be 3.25 stars. However, the history, location and atmosphere are worth a bump up to 3.5 Stars. read more

I have been coming here for years -- their pastries (including GF and vegan) are delicious! This is a New Haven/Yale treasure.

I'm a New Haven native so I'm well aware of what a staple Claire's Corner Copia is. My oldest sister used to work here when she was in college and would bring home the carrot cake for us every time she worked. Now being a full time vegan/vegetarian (don't ask), I knew exactly where to go when I was home visiting. Got here on Valentine's Day at 3:30pm to grab a late lunch with a close friend and I never realized how extensive the menu is. From sandwiches, to salads, Mexican entrees, flatbreads and etc., it was kind of a lot and a bit overwhelming. I ended up getting the BBQ tofu pizza and it fell short. When I got it, I noticed it wasn't cooked all the way and I had to send it back to the kitchen. Even after that, it wasn't tasty and was actually a mess. I assumed since Claire's has been in the vegetarian game for years, the food would be exceptional. It wasn't. Plus, they only give you a table spoon of guacamole and charge $7. Smh. Their carrot cake is really good though. read more

Made this our #1 to try for an overnight in town. The place itself reminds me of coop restaurants from the NE and WC. Seems like the entire team is behind their service and what they're serving up. The whole place feels like an oasis of rooted morale in good service, community, and a warm welcome vibe that is perfect! Ordered a Fire Island sandwich. Massive! Had to wrap up half and eat it later (sooner than later cuz it was too good to wait). Wish they were at home. But definitely stopping by on our next trip to the area. read more

Stopped in real quick yesterday when I was in the area checking out the Yale University Art Gallery. I opted for a Pumpkin Lassi smoothie and took home a slice of the double decker carrot cake. Both were absolutely divine and really made it feel like Fall despite the hot weather outside for November. My smoothie took a little longer to make as I saw other customers coming and going. My co-worker ordered right before me and her smoothie was handed to her in no time at all, but mine seemed to take a while. Well worth the wait though. Hopefully it won't take me another 13 years to be back! read more

Claire's has been serving vegetarian food on this corner for years, and while I've been here a number of times, I've somehow only ever had sweet things, like their famous Lithuanian coffee cake and carrot cake. We got some vegan items on a recent trip - snickerdoodle cookie, lemon coconut blueberry loaf, and pumpkin whoopie pie - and they were tasty treats, the loaf our favorite of the three. I think their vegan baked goods are good, not the best I've ever had, but the best in New Haven since vegan options are kind of limited. Ample seating to work or study, and friendly staff. read more

Enticed in by the pastry seen through the window. Wasn't sure what to chose so I left it up to the server and told her I am lactose intolerant. She chose two delicious vegan pastries. A blueberry lemon cake and a rich chocolate cake. The blueberry lemon was moist, light and had a hint of lemon flavoring. It was super. However, the chocolate cake was rich, decadent, sinful....I could not stop eating it! So good! Also got the apple chai which was a warm hug in a cup. Sweet and so flavorful. Loved it. read more

Got the Tex Mex Bowl ($18) and the Falafel Pita Pocket ($13). Both were awful. The beans in the Tex Mex bowl were hard, as if they hadn't been thoroughly cooked, which is shameful considering beans in a can have a softer consistency than these. The cheese was only partially melted and the whole dish lacked flavor. The Falafel Pita was even worse. Stale pita, microwaved frozen falafel, sad overripe tomatoes, and a lack of dressing -- essentially making it a pile of dry spring mix lettuce on a plate. Claire's seems to have an issue with using spices (including salt), as their pasta salad side tasted like raw dill and mayonnaise. TLDR: Their food is microwaved and bland. Their prices insultingly high for what they offer. This is not the first time I've come here, but it will be the last. I'm genuinely surprised they are still in business and can only assume that they profit off of desperate vegans and vegetarians looking for a quick bite and local progressives obsessed with the idea of Claire's rather than its sad reality. Sadly, the tasteless, uninspired vegetarian food that's offered here should is reminiscent of a darker time in America before Whites were exposed to chili pepper, curry powder, and other ethnic spices. If I could give 0/5 stars, I would. read more

What a cute cafe! From the outside it looked to be super lively so I decided to stop in after walking around New Haven. There have a large menu (consisting of breakfast sandwiches, salads, wraps and pasta) and so many vegan, vegetarian and gluten free friendly options. I was immediately intrigued by their apple pie chai, since chai is one of my favorites. It was delicious - definently recommend if cinnamon, chai, and apple cider are your thing! They also had so many sweet treats on display that I could not resist. I got a chocolate banana and chocolate coconut mini Bundt cakes. The banana Bundt cake was moist and rich. We stopped in for a quick bite on a rainy afternoon. It feels like a cozy spot, and you need to snag a table after ordering. The menu is decent, and we ordered three florentine grilled cheeses, two seltzers and a vanilla cupcake. It's weird that they serve sandwiches but don't serve chips. That came out to $47, which felt steep. It took about 15 minutes for the food to come out, even though it didn't seem that busy at the time. The food was solid enough.
