I wanted breakfast for dinner while confused about time zones, so I got three scrambled eggs with toast and home fries for only $9.99. I also added on a slice of New York cheesecake. The egg plate definitely hit the spot. On another day I would get a more interesting dessert here. This place looks well rated on Google and this was quite the disappointment. The one good thing was the staff were very sweet and trying their best. I ordered a vanilla latte and the crabby omelette but they were out so I ordered the bagel-witch with bacon. The drinks took a long time so I had to check on them and was told they were being made. When they finally arrived, the latte was ice cold. It was clear they forgot to steam the milk. I informed the server and she said she would remake it. the food arrived and it looked like ham on my sandwich. I asked the server about how I ordered bacon and she insisted it was bacon. The picture on the menu has real slices of bacon. I believe what was on my sandwich was turkey bacon. Then there were no utensils to eat my potatoes with. When I finally got those they were cold and undercooked. My new latte never came. Most of what we ordered were American breakfast foods made worse than your local Denny's. Maybe you'll have more luck ordering the Mediterranean fare. read more

Excellent breakfast I got this thing the manager recommended with two pancakes one slice of bacon one large sausage patty two eggs any style home fries and a few pieces of fruit (an unlisted bonus!). Everything was really really good and it was a ton of food for only $10. The bacon was really underdone and I like my pork really well done cause pork is swine but I was assured both the bacon and sausage were beef. The only thing that was wrong with was that the maple syrup was fake and I don't care for imitation syrup. The men's room was disgusting and the toilet seat was broken and so was the toilet paper dispenser and I had to wipe myself with paper towels and the it freshener was broken too. I was told I was allowed to go into the women's restroom and the women's restroom was immaculate. Wow!!!! Was biking around NH Sunday morning and stopped for breakfast! Stopped because we saw outside seating and it was shady. I had the BEC on a bagel. My friend and I just came in off the street for our first meal of the day... We had coffee at 10 and we're pretty darn hungry at three. My partner and I eat at Chap's at least once a month. We almost always get the same thing -- the lamb gyro deluxe. The meat is very yummy and the fries are always freshly fried and very crunchy. You have to ask for lamb "off the menu" since it isn't posted, but the owners are always accommodating for this special request. The outdoor seating is great in the summer. There are three factors in my four-star rating. First, the price is reasonable. For $8-9 you can get a full meal and often have some left overs. Second, it's just your usual small deli/lunch-place and I'm not looking for a super fancy meal here. Finally, the only thing I've eaten is their gyros, so take that into account. Their pina colada is a definite must try. Don't order the veggie kebabs. Even though the rice is made well, the kebabs are too simple. It's better to get the veggie combo. It will fill you up much more. Also, the price is a bit unfair. The plate should be $8 and not $12. No doubt the quality is good. But you must look for options outside of downtown new haven. I went to Chap's Grille for lunch on a Sunday. While I suspected that they were known more for their breakfast menu items, I opted for a Mediterranean dish. I've been dying for some Persian Chelow-Kabob, but since I've had no luck in finding an Iranian restaurant in CT, I ordered the Beef Kefta Kabob with hopes that it would be similar. The dish arrived hot. I was served two medium sized skewers of kabob atop a bed of rice pilaf, with a side of stuffed bread and salad. The salad was fine - just a normal salad. The bread was like a pita bread with a smearing of a spicy tomato-based spread - it was good but a tad too spicy for me. The rice was good as well, but there is room for improvement. The kabobs were also good, though not amazing - the skewers of meat were tender and grilled well. The service was also good at this venue. The staff were friendly and pleasant. Verdict: The food was good, but it definitely does not substitute for Persian food. The cost/value ratio was okay and I had no problems with the service I received. I have never been disappointed by Chaps. It's always so delicious and they are usually true to their time frame when I order off grub hub. What I love the most about Chap's is that you know when delivery places have the portion at the bottom of the page where you can write a note if you have any requests? Chap's actually reads those notes and always gets it right. I can't stand when places don't read what the customer has written especially if it's a dietary restriction issue. There is no point even having that section if places don't fill the request. My favorite here is the stuffed French toast with the berries. Omg sooooo good. When I want to go healthier for breakfast I get the protein omelet with a side salad instead of the toast and hash browns. Any wrap there is usually a home run. Food was completely disgusting.. French toast was soggy, the fruit they put on it was spoiled, the cream cheese was warm in which I could've got sick from if I ate it, whipped cream was melted. The smoothie I ordered was completely melted also & I can tell it was poorly blended due to all the fruit & ice chunks. All of this means that my food was sitting somewhere in the heat waiting to be delivered to me & there's no reason for my food to be like this. The restaurant is LESS than a mile away from me. Chap's has been my regular breakfast/brunch spot for the four years I've lived in New Haven, and as I'm leaving the city, it's one of the saddest goodbyes I'll have to say. Nothing can compete with the delicious food, friendly staff, and bright, calm ambience inside and out. I've tried some other eateries for weekend brunches in New Haven over the years, but while my experiences elsewhere have been pleasant enough, I keep coming back to Chap's. My regular picks for food are The Final Exam, a breakfast platter with eggs, home fries, pancakes/french toast, bacon, sausage, and fruit (all for ten dollars!); the Eggs Benedict; and the Chicken and Waffles; all of which include a ton of delicious food for an extremely reasonable price. I'm not a coffee snob, but the coffee at Chap's is delicious, too, and your mug is never empty. What's more, there's Frank's RedHot on every table, which is a refreshing change from the typical Tabasco I see lining the windows of many New Haven diners. If you're looking for a breakfast place in Downtown to be your regular spot, there's no better pick in my book than Chap's. read more

I'm sorry to see that this place has so few stars! I just tried the food here for the first time, stopped by on the way home and decided to get some food to go. Outside there was a sign for a $15 dinner special, so that's what I got. The special was easily enough food for two meals (but I scarfed it all down in one sitting...whoops), and included two chicken kebabs, a ton of rice, grilled veggies, tabbouleh salad, hummus with tahini, and a pita. I really enjoyed all of it - everything tasted really good and homemade, like being in someone's home kitchen. Additionally, the guy working there was super friendly! They're open early in the morning until late-ish at night, and have a lot of breakfast and brunch options (which looked very reasonable - only $8 for eggs benedict) in addition to their Middle Eastern dishes. The place is fairly inconspicuous, has kind of a bohemian vibe, and would probably be a great spot for breakfast. It's got a pretty extensive menu, with sandwiches, wraps, panini's, salads, vegetarion dishes, breakfast dishes, dinner entrees, the list goes on and on. I ordered a monte cristo, thw wife had a grilled cheese and our friend had a wrap. The delivery took over an hour, and by the time it arrived, the grilled cheese and monte cristo had gone stale and were tolerable, but on a fraction of what I'm sure they were had they been enjoyed freshly prepared. The wrap was the best out of the three. Prices are reasonable, and I'll update this review if I ever have a chance to eat in at the establishment, that is if I take that risk. The only way I can recommend Chap's Grill is if you're with a large group who can't decide on what type of food you may want; after all they serve just about everything. read more

When I first picked up a menu from Chap's, I was pumped. They seemed to have everything! But what I was interested in were their bagels--you know, from the sign out front that says they're a bagel cafe. Hmmm. Whenever I've gone in, their display appears picked over (by 8am?) and the bagels are pretty average. I asked what flavors of cream cheese they had (expecting more than just plain) and well, they only had plain. So, I decided to try and spice it up with some jam. A bagel with cream cheese and jam--now that's not too difficult, is it? Apparently I was wrong. About 10 minutes later the man brought out a bagel, sliced in half, with an individual tub of Philadelphia cream cheese and a packet of Heinz jam. (Since when does Heinz make jam?) I can't remember how much I paid for that bagel, but I highly doubt it was worth him cutting it in two and putting it on a plate with some pre-packaged condiments.
