I've eaten here a few times and I really think it's worthy of a review. You can do Matsuhisa or Yama sushi in Vail Village and drop $150 a person easily. Joy Sushi is exceptional! Standard rolls are only $10 and you can get some really cool rolls for $15-$20. So far only $40, you can leave feeling really full and very satisfied. Also super quick service. I sat down For lunch and had my rolls within 10 minutes. The space isn't fancy but the food is top-notch. Definitely worth a look if you are in Vail. read more

We were here for a late lunch. There was a 25% off deal, and this place was just open for a month so we thought we should take a shot. With a party of four, we ordered a combination of many things: Sashimi, Sushi, and cooked dishes. The fish we ordered was very fresh and delicious. Some items were outstanding and made us surprised at how we could find the delicious Japanese food in the mountains and more importantly at the reasonable price. We were there pretty late for lunch so only our table at that time. The service was excellent and people were friendly. I loved the food presentation and the atmosphere. We went here because of the good reviews and left so disappointed! This restaurant looks like a hole in the wall, but with fancy restaurant pricing. We usually order the same rolls at all of the sushi restaurants and would say these were among the worst. The rolls were small and were nothing special. The specialty rolls at most restaurants are huge, but here, they're the size of standard rolls. We left hungry. California roll is priced very reasonable so we full up a bit with those next to the more expensive rolls. Our kids love the miso and the cool sodas with the glass popping thing in the bottle. With the loss of Nozawa next door at the old Holiday Inn, Joy Sushi is now the best sushi in the area! The fish was fresh and delicious, with salmon that melts in your mouth! Service was outstanding, very fast and made sure our leftovers were well wrapped. Decor is outstanding considering the small size and odd shape of the restaurant. They did an excellent job with limited resources. The place does get crowded, so if it's dinner hour, consider phoning in an order for pickup. This was one of the best sushi experiences I have ever had. Very small quaint sushi bar run by a really sweet older Japanese sushi chef. Very affordable too. The rolls are amazing, the Joy roll was my favorite and probably one of the most interesting rolls I've had. The staff was very accommodating of our party of 6. They actually asked a couple in a two top to move so they could put enough tables together for us (sorry couple who had to move). Fish was all very fresh and the preparation was perfect. The only drawback is that there are no restrooms on property. You have to go outside to another building if you need the facilities. We loved it! I got the Dragon Roll and the crab was real. Not imitation at all, which is a surprise to say the least. My dad got a few of the different standard rolls including eel, yellowtail, and tuna. He enjoyed all of them thoroughly. We also shared a seaweed salad which was great. I was visiting Vail and had a friend drive from aspen to meet me. We wanted a decent place to meet have a few drinks, eat a little bit of sushi. We were a group of six. After telling the staff we mostly wanted to drink and wanted something cheaper because we were going to order quite a bit. They offer two bottles of saki for our group. We weren't being obnoxious or anything just calm enjoying the moment and our saki. Moments later the owner/ manager whatever comes up to tell us that we need to hurry up and finish our drinks and get out because I guess our money wasn't good enough, and she assumed we were not going to spend enough money there. So we quickly take our ten shots or more while they all stare and gawk at us. Needless to say the most rude experience I've ever had at a place. Completely ridiculous to treat paying costumers this way. Don't eat here. I'm sure the sushi wasn't worth 20$ a roll. read more

Had a really nice first experience in here for lunch; sushi was great and the service was fine, even though overpriced. Went in last night, well before closing, and the restaurant wasn't full. I was told I couldn't be waited on because they had too many to-go orders. Never been to a place that didn't prioritize their dining-in clients (higher tips). Went back tonight, and even called before I went to make sure I could get in. When I got there, I was told I could only place a takeout order. I really wanted the sushi so I ordered, but the women I interacted with was so rude. Disappointing, especially since I've referred them to a lot of a people. This review will be helpful to those who have kids and dogs. Our review is not based on their food, it is solely on their service, particularly the female waitress. We did not stay long enough to order. We chose this restaurant based on the description that it was kid friendly and dogs were allowed (outside seating available). However, we were working out how to tie our dog to one of the tables when a female waitress came outside looking concerned and asked if our dog barked. We could tell our dog was not welcome so my husband put him back in the car. Once we were inside, things did not get better. It was past 5PM and we were the only ones in the restaurant. The atmosphere was awkward and uninviting. We sat there uncomfortably as most of the staff stared at us. While we were looking over the main menu, the kids started drawing little pictures on the laminated sushi roll menu with the dry erase marker that was on the table. The waitress came over and told them to stop drawing on the menu, brought over a rag, and wiped the pictures off the menu at our table. She brought over a piece of paper for one of my kids to draw on instead. We've been to several sushi restaurants that used laminated menus and this was the first place that made such a big deal about drawing on them with a dry erase marker. After all that, we decided this place definitely was not kid friendly and left. To the Joy Sushi owner, please remove "kid friendly" and highlight "dogs not allowed" from your restaurant description. read more

When you say you've had righteous sushi anywhere in CO, it's generally met with side eye - idk, something abt it being land locked or whatever - though I'm not sure that in the grand scheme of the trek from Tsukiji, the extra 2H on a plane btwn LA and CO really makes the difference - but I digress, this sush is delicious. Tiny place - our party of nine felt like we took up 1/3 of the place - bustling on a random winter's eve with both dine in and take out - and as it's not in the village, it's muy casual; pimped out Burton parkas and beanies more commonplace than sports coats and loafers. Started with miso soup (warming), agedashi tofu (light), seaweed and cucumber salads (standard, yum) - for the rolls I did a mix of salmon/avo, yellowtail/scallion, spicy tuna, avo, veg - fish fresh, rolls moderately well rolled, though still had a few collapses. Others tried the Buddha (tempura asparagus, sweet potato, topped with tofu skin, avo, chili sauce), Mexican (spicy tuna, snow crab topped with avo, hot sauce), and rainbow rolls, all of which were met with glee. Didn't do any straight up sushi, but they have a wide selection, beyond just the standard tuna, salmon, ikura options. If you're not down with sush, as both TJ and Papa N were not, the shrimp fried rice and teriyaki chicken were well liked - didn't hit either, but both looked adequate. Starters range from $5-15, simple rolls are $6-8, gringo shizz is in the $10-17 range, with 8-10 pieces coming per roll. Mochi is in the offing for dessert, which I always find hard to turn down. Overall, yes, it's loud and the service isn't the most knowledgable, but everyone is very sweet and it is this unpolished intimacy that makes it a lovely and tasty respite from the fanciness of the sush options in town. read more
