We had a big party (11) for a birthday celebration. My expectations initially weren't very high (yelp ratings weren't great), but I was extremely impressed with all of our courses. The sashimi was excellent, the salads were excellent, and rolls were very good as well. And whil the menu has changed over the years, there's something for everyone (including those with an adversion to raw fish) from noodle bowls to baby back ribs. I rarely submit reviews, but in searching for the number to order takeout recently, I noticed that this mainstay of the Vail Valley had a surprisingly low Yelp rating, and I wondered why? My experiences with Sato have all been in the Very Good to Excellent range for both quality of cuisine and level of service. I have been a patron at all its locations over decades. Having lived in the Vail Valley for 30 years, I think it's amazing that we have five or six japanese/sushi restaurants now, but only one in Edwards! 20 years ago it was tough enough to get a decent cheeseburger in the valley!! So to all the people who grouse about cost, wait times or service and vindictively throw out one star ratings because they feel personally aggrieved on these fronts, please consider these thoughts: -the remote location of mountain towns will necessarily raise costs, especially for high end dining. -this is not New York, Miami, San Francisco, LA or Chicago where there are more direct supply chains and a wealth of highly trained service industry professionals. -I have friends who work in kitchens, serve, bartend and manage restaurants in the valley. Many of these people work second and third jobs, and sometimes they may be not fully "on their game." When you write a whiny critique, you directly affect their financial situation. Do you work in a sector where anyone, no matter how poorly qualified to judge, can rip you to shreds in a public forum? Maybe you don't work at all so don't have that problem? -These negative reviews also obviously affect the restaurant owner's ability to provide quality dining experiences going forward due to the economic impacts of bad reviews. This was never more true than now when many restaurants are going under due to COVID stresses! Please continue to support this wonderful "down valley" amenity, which as locals, we can not afford to lose!! And if you are "just passing through," please show a little patience and kindness! This said, the quality of the food has always been excellent. Surprised to find a great sushi spot in Edwards! Rolls were excellently built and presented. Sashimi was generously portioned and just incredible. The owner/manager was a huge jerk and actually yelled at me after I got tired of hearing all the excuses about why we should be patient and not be upset about a two hour wait for crappy sushi! If I could give 0 stars I would. This is the most poorly run establishment I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing. From their lousy in house dining to their horrendous take out, this restaurant has no idea how to handle customer relations. There have been multiple occasions where we ordered take out, were given a time to pick up the food, and 3 TIMES IN A ROW when we arrive they tell us they have not started our order. Even after we call ahead and double check because we now how unorganized they are, they lie to us and waste our time. I will never return to this place and will actively spread the word of how awful they are. The sushi isn't even anything special, it is overpriced and over rated. If you read this, go anywhere else for sushi. You will hate yourself if you spend your time and money at this garbage restaurant read more

I arrived around 8pm on a Saturday evening and we had to wait about 8 minutes for a table to clear out, but it was more than worth the wait. It seemed to me that this was the happening spot to visit on a weekend night. The crowd was in good humor and even a bit lively for a sushi spot. Throughout my visit, it seemed that the owners cater to a 20-40yr old crowd, believe it or not trip-hop does have a cap on its enjoyment age. However, T-Pain was playing when I first arrived, but R&B never came back so it must have been a request because they had some dead space in the tunes shortly after leaving me to believe they were rotating discs. This fish was incredibly fresh and they even had a few specialty rolls that I hadn't seen before. The presentation was so amazing that I couldn't keep my eyes on my own plate. I proceeded to check out other patrons dishes to see if it was consistent - and it was. Another aspect that I enjoyed was the specialty loose leaf teas they offer. They had a very nice selection. The service was exceptional and very friendly. The wait staff was on top of everything. Overall, this place is a must visit and if I am in the area will return again. My family and I are longtime locals of the Vail Valley. Although we don't eat out often, Sato's has been a staple for us. Unfortunately, the last time that we ate at the restaurant, we were seated near the back of the room. Adjacent to us was a corner table of twenty-somethings who were well beyond drunk. They were playing a drinking game (yes, as if this was not a nice restaurant but a sorority/frat house) which entailed very loud screams and slamming of shot glasses. With our 13-year-old daughter sitting with us, the "F" bomb was dropped regularly, and it was a disaster. We tried to cancel our order, but the food was on its way; so, we tried to stick it out. As the group continued their shenanigans, we gave up. Management did nothing to have this group leave the restaurant or apologize to the patrons who were having to put up with their behavior. We left Sato's never wanting to return. Tonight, we decided to place an order for pickup. The woman who answered the phone was curt at best. It was as though I was bothering her, and I called at 5 pm (when they open) trying to not get them during a really busy time. 3 of the 7 items that I asked for were no longer available (the menu online is no longer accurate), and no replacements were available. As a local family, I believe in supporting our small, locally owned businesses; however, rudeness & a sour attitude are never acceptable. Sato's has lost our business forever. read more

We were all in the mood for a good few bites of sushi. We ordered a few appetizers, and the seaweed salad was good, but the egg rolls were not what we expected. We ordered a bunch of sushi rolls, they were all very mediocre. Not really impressed by their roll selection, and everything was pretty expensive for what it was. Very disappointed. Last time we were there, ( 11/2 year ago) the service was horrible and the 10 min wait was 1 hour. But decided to try again. Horrible service!!!! 1 waitress for the whole restaurant. After we ordered never saw her again. Waited 45 mins to get a salad and another 20 mins to get sushi. Everyone around us was looking for their food after 1 hour. Sushi arrived and was $15-27 per roll. Not bad but the rolls were 1/2 the size of 3 other sushi restaurants near us. Really good sushi in the mountains and in a great setting. The front of the restaurant opens up with rolling windows to bring fresh air and a patio feeling to the whole restaurant. A great way to enjoy a meal with the fresh mountain air! I had the tempura vegetables. Amazing! Also several varieties of rolls, the dragon roll being my favorite. The sashimi was solid too. All was reasonably priced, not cheap, but sushi should never be cheap. Getting there before 6:30 helped as several of the rolls we wanted were a few bucks off for happy hour. Before going to this place I read many reviews (none on Yelp) that said that the sushi was good but the service atrocious. I've eaten sushi on both coasts and in Japan. While Sato's offerings are not "cosmic", they are certainly good enough for this sushi snob. (Life's too short for mediocre sushi) The negative reviews focused on the service, which was described in harsh terms, so I went with my party, expecting to endure the service in order to enjoy the fish. In fact the service was attentive without being intrusive, friendly without being effusive. Most notable was that all the servers acted as a well-coordinated team. I never had the sense that anyone would ignore a customer's needs, because it was "not my table". The manager conceded that when the place opened in its new space, there were problems, but it's apparent that the management took the feedback seriously. I'd certainly return on my next trip to the area, and I highly recommend it. A couple of quibbles: The nigiri was fine, but many of the rolls (as seems to be the habit in all area restaurants) were overwrought, with too many ingredients. A salmon skin roll does not need smelts, nor does a spicy tuna roll need smelts as well as avocado. The unagi was a bit cold, but tasty. read more

This used to be my favorite sushi place in the valley; but after my meal this evening, I think that I'm going to have to get my sushi fix elsewhere. Love the Volcano Roll and Buddha's Delight and both were ok; however, they were lacking the vibrant flavors and perfectly combined textures that they did in the past. The Green Eggs and Hamachi was pretty close to being right on; but like all of the rolls, we felt like it was not prepared to previous standards. Even the garlic chile sauce that comes with the edamame was disappointing- it wasn't as hot (used to be blazingly hot) or as flavorful. Our meal wasn't terrible and the quality of the fish was good as always, we just left feeling really let down and that the experience wasn't worth the prices. Hoping it's just an off night and that they'll be back to serving fabulous and tasty rolls soon, but I'll definitely be keeping my options open for a new favorite. read more
