Before going to this place I read many reviews (none on Yelp) that said that the sushi was good but the service atrocious. I've eaten sushi on both coasts and in Japan. While Sato's offerings are not "cosmic", they are certainly good enough for this sushi snob. (Life's too short for mediocre sushi) The negative reviews focused on the service, which was described in harsh terms, so I went with my party, expecting to endure the service in order to enjoy the fish. In fact the service was attentive without being intrusive, friendly without being effusive. Most notable was that all the servers acted as a well-coordinated team. I never had the sense that anyone would ignore a customer's needs, because it was "not my table". The manager conceded that when the place opened in its new space, there were problems, but it's apparent that the management took the feedback seriously. I'd certainly return on my next trip to the area, and I highly recommend it. A couple of quibbles: The nigiri was fine, but many of the rolls (as seems to be the habit in all area restaurants) were overwrought, with too many ingredients. A salmon skin roll does not need smelts, nor does a spicy tuna roll need smelts as well as avocado. The unagi was a bit cold, but tasty. read more

Sushi was just OK, service wasn't. update: tried again in the new location and still have the same complaints, service indifferent, sushi rolls ok, tuna flavorless, and my seweed salad was really old smelling.. .it should have never been brought to the table. read more

This used to be my favorite sushi place in the valley; but after my meal this evening, I think that I'm going to have to get my sushi fix elsewhere. Love the Volcano Roll and Buddha's Delight and both were ok; however, they were lacking the vibrant flavors and perfectly combined textures that they did in the past. The Green Eggs and Hamachi was pretty close to being right on; but like all of the rolls, we felt like it was not prepared to previous standards. Even the garlic chile sauce that comes with the edamame was disappointing- it wasn't as hot (used to be blazingly hot) or as flavorful. Our meal wasn't terrible and the quality of the fish was good as always, we just left feeling really let down and that the experience wasn't worth the prices. Hoping it's just an off night and that they'll be back to serving fabulous and tasty rolls soon, but I'll definitely be keeping my options open for a new favorite. read more

Better sushi than you'd expect in Colorado. This is a cute place - very low key and relaxed - not upscale like you might expect to find in Vail Village. The prices aren't relaxed though - simple rolls average $9 each, much more for the fancy rolls. It was pretty good - not nearly as good as you'd find in St. Louis or on either coast though. read more

Very disappointed. Last time we were there, ( 11/2 year ago) the service was horrible and the 10 min wait was 1 hour. But decided to try again. Horrible service!!!! 1 waitress for the whole restaurant. After we ordered never saw her again. Waited 45 mins to get a salad and another 20 mins to get sushi. Everyone around us was looking for their food after 1 hour. Sushi arrived and was $15-27 per roll. Not bad but the rolls were 1/2 the size of 3 other sushi restaurants near us. Way over priced for the amount and quality. Will never go here again and can not recommend the restaurant to anyone read more

I have been here several times usually at happy hour after snow boarding. Even the bar tender is an attractive friendly lady. Its the only place in Edwards that has the ever elusive Carlsberg on draft. I am from Miami and I am always amazed at sushi being this good and fresh in the rockie's. The wait team see's to coordinate there effort in service at "Happy Hour" and are usually very attentive until the place starts filling up. They are mostly very attractive young ladies as well. The "Happy hour" prices are comparable to equal quality sushi restaurants in Miami and the fish has to come a really long way from either coast. Spicy tuna roll, California roll and Hamachi are great fresh classic rolls and always fresh "Apre Ski". The lounge area next to the bar is Modern comfortable and Avantgard, like the Chop stick art on the back wall. I like it. read more

Great sushi, very yummy. Loved the Hawaii-O (it has nuts in it) and all the specialty rolls, except the fried oyster one- to overcooked. Deserts were awesome-especially the brownie one, and definately big enough to share. My only complaint is the service is nothing like Chicago. I constantly had to keep reminding my waitress to fill up our water(something I notice quite a lot in the local restaurants- may be a little TO laid back). So don't be surprised if you get a little neglected. But that maybe a CO thing. read more

While I thoroughly enjoy eating it, I only go out for sushi maybe three to four times a year and am therefore a novice sushi-ite despite being a food/wine nerd ( please consider this in my review). My wife and I met another couple for dinner at their new location in Edwards and had a really great experience. The interior was very hip & sleek with muted lighting and a beautiful bar. (The only marks against the decor was the projector showing 90's era ski-porn in the middle of the bar portion of the room. C'mon guys, really? You don't get enough powder turns during the day so you have to look at it at night when your taking a girl out on a date?? Ya killin' me here, just killin' me) anyway... Service was quick, informative, and friendly, the cocktails were good, and everything we ordered was very nicely done. A few highlights were: spider roll, dragon roll, volcano roll and all the tuna. I actually left full for the first time in my sushi eating career (which always seems hard to do). The tab wasn't too bad considering the feast we enjoyed. I was very impressed and am looking forward to returning again soon to dig into a few more of those exotic rolls! read more

Waited 1 hour and 15 mins for our sushi (wasn't even busy). Horrible atmosphere with loud music. Food was terrible, slimy, and not fresh. Charged us an extra $100 for entrees that we didn't even order. I would not recommend this place at all! read more

We live right here in Edwards. I work at Beaver Creek and am often asked by guests where to eat. I would always recommend Satos and Ti Amo. We brought guests there a few days ago. The food was good but the new location is horrible. Not sure what the owners were thinking!!! Please make the atmosphere wonderful like it used to be. Also please train your staff to not touch the utensils improperly. I spoke with the manager and she had plenty of excuses. Sorry I won't be back. read more

Another new restaurant for us and it did not disappoint. The rolls were out of this world but well worth the wait. The sushi took a bit longer due to they were down 2 sushi chefs. We were advised that is was taking longer than usual. Our dinners were excellent with tons of flavor and just the right amount of heat in the spicy dishes. The white chocolate bread pudding was the perfect ending to a wonderful meal. If you are not a patient patron then I will give you a little heads up on the wait, it did take a bit to get our meals but for all of you "negative inpatient, and I need it now " folks out there, please remember no one seems to want to work these days and the restaurants are doing there very best to provide a perfect dining experience while keeping the doors open. Here's a shout out to the servers, bartenders, chefs,etc who are working THANK YOU!! Leave them a little bigger tip than usual, after all they are her for us diners. The service here was horrible. We had a big party (14) and called ahead of time. Talked to a guy who gave us a reservation at 8pm...but said to come early and wait at bar because we most likely would be seated early. We get here and a lady hostess tells us 8:15 ...then 8:30... finally got offered a table at 8:45. The insulting thing was she tells my daughter that she did not talk to a man when making reservation because this lady was "the only one who made them". WHICH WAS A FLAT OUT LIE. The owner was there and we actually saw him as he was leaving. That is who my daughter talked to. The other fact is that the lady keep lying about what was the our seating time. Finally 8 folks in our party left to go next door. Six of us stayed. PLEASE GET CONFIRMATION IN EMAIL before coming to this place. Or you will be told B/S about your reservation. ... I will say the Food we did finally get was actually good. And the bar tender was very nice because we ended up eating at bar (with our under aged kids). read more

Went here with a group of 8. Service was stellar. Food and drinks always on time. Everyone was friendly. Couldn't order a bad roll and we probably ordered 18 rolls. Prices fair. Would highly recommend and will visit again next time in town. Oh and the fish was high quality and fresh at all times. read more

Brick and Mortar: Convenient location in Edwards with a mediocre attempt at chic interior design. Food: 2-3 stars, maybe Service: Could literally not have gotten any worse. Very mediocre sushi with unrelenting inconsiderate service. I ordered about $150 of sushi for take-out. Waited the hour+ for it to be ready then went to pick it up. When I arrived they were not busy as it was past 9pm. Upon picking it up the server informed me that she thought it was strange that I ordered two of a couple things so she only put in one order of each. After informing me that it would take a bit for them to make them I just took what was there and left, all the while pondering why someone would attempt to telekinetically decipher my order as opposed to just listening to my words. Regardless, i return home to realize that they had forgot the item I was very excited to try (duck confit dumplings) and also any wasabi and ginger which, while at the bar picking up the food, i specifically asked for extra and got an "oh there's enough in there." On the plus side there were 397 packets of soy sauce. So I called and was given straight to the manager. I explained the whole situation and she hastily replied that there would be a gift certificate waiting for me in the office. So I sit down to eat and never before has the need for ginger and wasabi been so apparent. Most of the fish was entirely mediocre. The slices of sashimi were paper thin. The rolls were the size of my thumb and lacked substance. The meal ended with us grilling some steaks. Fast forward a few days later when I went to pick the gift certificate up... $14 dollars. A $14 dollar gift certificate. The monetary amount does not matter to me as I have no interest in visiting this mockery again, but it is such an inconsiderate gesture. I have spent a lot of time in the restaurant business from the back to the front. I understand that a place can have a bad night and that food can be a little sub-par and that they generally deserve a second chance. However, service should never have this much of an off night. There is simply no excuse for that. And, judging by the rest of the reviews, it seems that this is no exception, but rather the rule. In short, if you aren't familiar with high end sushi i suppose this place will do for a night. However, it is an expensive price to pay for such high, and daring, levels of mediocrity and inconsideration. read more

Big family trips involve major logistical challenges when eating out so I am always impressed when we are able to pull it off. Sato had the potential to be a disaster, especially with the iffy reviews posted, but I was in dire need of some fish so we decided to go for it. Kudos for taking a reservation for 8 last min, great service, and tasty fish for being smack in the middle of the mountains with no large bodies of water in sight. They didn't even slap us with the party over 6 mandatory gratuity which always bugs me since we traditionally tip more on our own accord. Good drink list and fun and funky rolls. Not a bad choice if you have the hankerin' and don't feel like dropping a ton of dough on the over inflated ski resort restaurants. read more

Wow! This place never disappoints. My friends, family, and I have been long time regulars and we love the new location. I was surprised to hear they were moving again however, they made a swift transition into the new spot and quickly reopened for their loyal customers. It is great to see the same friendly faces again! The food is as usual amazing and there is always a great vibe. Why does Colorado have such great sushi?? Every time I come here and eat it, its so good...Well Sato is no exception. This place is situated in the Edwards/Vail area and its kinda small inside but big enough for a couple of large groups. The setting is kinda scenester, with hip hop playing in the background, people sipping sake at the bar while they wait for a table, and all the beautiful people that Colorado has in abundance...It was great. The sushi is really fresh and tasty, from the creative appys to the rolls that won't disappoint. If I lived here, I would eat here all the time. read more

I've been to this place a few times after it came highly recommended by the concierge at the Ritz Carlton Club in Bachelor's Gulch. The first time, it was incredible. The second time, I had too many vodka tonics to recall the quality of the food, and the third time it was quite possibly my worst dining experience out. Maybe the service is friendlier in the summer. Really small, overcrowded, VERY loud (to the point where you can't hear your date talking) on the weekends/in the busy season. Their menu is interesting, good specials. Best sushi in town!!! The tuna sashimi salad is my all time favorite starter along with the spicy edamame. The Hama Kama (yellow collar) is outstanding. The lychee martini is so delicious!!!! Although the menu was pricy, we anticipated it would be very good. We ordered hot green tea, chicken katsu curry, and halibut entree. The tea was room temperature and overly diluted. Katsu had a bad oil taste. Halibut was over cooked and didn't have good flavor. For that quality I would prefer to pay less than a third of what they charged. This place is fabulous. The service and sushi both were excellent. It is a little pricey though, but once you get caught up eating the delicious sushi, you can't stop, so that may be the reason the four of us walked out with a big bill. We went off season in Vail. We had a small wait while we figured out our order and the waitress was prompt and cheerful. The food came out easily and quickly and we enjoyed our drinks as well. I would just like to make an official statement here when I say I've had terrible, terrible service in Chicago, no one area has the corner on that market. As I looked around me at everyone stuffing their faces, I heard nary a complaint about the food or the service. The setting is pretty minimalist, just like in Japan and I liked the modern, casual feel of the place. Even off season, you can run up a huge bill but they also have specials. If you're a sushi lover though, this would be the place for it. read more

My hubby and I visited this restaurant a few years ago (in a different location) before kids, and it was superb!! We decided to visit again. We were not disappointed. The fish is phenomenal and the service was fantastic. It was our first night in Colorado and the kids were tired/cranky. Terrible service! Absolutely terrible in the sense that the staff need to get an attitude adjustment. I took my girlfriend on a date for happy hour and the bad service started the second the older hostess attended us. Apparently they "couldn't" sit us in one of the 2 person tables in the back because she "needed to reserve " them for in case they got a bigger party. We ate, drank, and left before any "bigger" party ever arrived. We also asked for a table away from the window, with all the open tables they had at 5:15 they could not accommodate us. Next is the service of the wait staff, it was mediocre service but not adequate or acceptable for sushi spot with a check of 70 dollars for 2 when we only ordered a roll. Our waiter checked on us very sporadically and did not even take the time to wipe down the table after she said she would. My only complaint with the food selection is the roll selections was extremely boring and not appealing. The one star service far outweighs the 3-4 stars I would of given for fish quality. read more

This is a sad review. We have been a regulars at Satos since the early 2000's visiting several times a trip both alone and with large groups of friends) and following them as they moved through locations. While not cheap, the one constant through the years had been the quality of the food, and the overall atmosphere was always great. Our last visit in the summer had been to the old location, and we were surprised to hear they had moved again, but we wanted to try it out and boy were we disappointed. Whereas the previous environments were vibrant and fun, the new one seemed just like what you would expect for a shared purpose restaurant, confused and not vibrant. Worse the food quality went through the floor. The edamame which was always fresh and vibrant was now mealie and not very enjoyable (we complained and were offered a replacement which was at best marginally better). We ordered nigiri and some sushi rolls (and unlike the past visits, the selections were mostly tempura). To say at best both were marginal, the nigiri was bland (fish not extremely fresh), and one appeared to be seared. The rolls were small (6 pieces as opposed to the normal 8) and extremely bland (once again I think this was due to the freshness of the fish). Whereas I used to recommend this place to everyone, I would now stay stay away, overpriced and terrible value for the dollar, the food is no better than a strip mall sushi joint. Basically edamame, 2 rolls, 2 nigiri and a few drinks for $100, a waste of money. read more

Pricy but tasty, I see some complaints about service and will say that I have been visiting Sato's a couple of times a year since it's been open and have never had bad service. Not great either but I think you have to take into account the Mountain factor. Help rotates in and out of the valley every 6 months YET at Satos you will see some familiar faces, some new but they do seem to be able to keep a core staff and they do a good job. I think the expectation for highest quality service in a resort area like vail will always leave you wanting. TOO MUCH turnover and TOO MANY other reasons to be here. The staff of service companies arn't here to work they are here to play. So be realistic and don't expect NEW YORK CITY, LA OR CHICAGO levels of servide and you will enjoy your vacation much more. read more
