We were craving sushi on our trip, and all the restaurants in Vail were booked - a big shoutout to Yama for doing us a solid and squeezing us in! All the staff members we spoke to were very kind and helpful in explaining how to order. I really appreciate that they took the time to check in with us throughout the meal, and they made great drink recommendations! The sushi was okay, but I was expecting more for the price, and the presentation was not great. The best item we got was by far the Shiso Tuna. The EDM music playing constantly was also very loud and borderline abnoxious. We noticed a young family next to us who had the same complaint. Experience was just OK... Service was great. Restaurant is small. The sushi portion are extremely small. You get double the meat at sushi restaurants in Houston. The salmon sashimi was half what we are used use to. The quality of salmon was only ok and not great. Prices were way too high but I guess it's cause you are in vail, co. One roll was really small, and I kinda felt that $24 for it was overpriced. The rolls we ordered ranged from $24- $28 each. There's one roll that's called the tsunami. It has fresh snow crab and was phenomenal. By far, my fave roll out of all 4. My daughter doesn't like sushi, but she said the udon was very flavorful and the tempered veggies that came with it, were delicious. Well, what can I say, other than this is definitively the absolute worst "sushi" I have ever eaten in my existence on this planet. I could make a better sushi roll with ingredients from the local McDonald's dumpster than what I was served in this pathetic excuse for a sushi restaurant. Small cave like venue with excellent sushi, sashimi and rolls to choose from along with appetizers. Some not too commonly found sashimi including flounder and octopus. Nice selection of sake and wine with a few cocktail specialties. It is a bit noisy and a 90 minute table limit. Best to make a reservation on the weekends especially. read more

I was blessed with the most wonderful service from the staff at Yama. Marissa was astonishingly astute with her bar tending and service. Our server Foebe with pink hair was poignant and pleasant And took care of all of our needs. The hostess Maya was very gracious and warmly greeted us and brought us to our wonderful patio table. Small sushi restaurant in Vail Village. If I remember correctly they open at 5 PM for dinner. They accept reservations, which my family and I were not aware of, but we were able to snag a spot as soon as they opened. They offer booth seating as well as table seating. We were greeted by 2 employees whom were friendly and got us seated right away as there was no one else in the restaurant at that time. Our server provided us regular menus as well as what I think was a "seasonal" menu where you are given a pencil and you check off which items you would like. He also noticed my mom was a bit uncomfortable in her chair due to her backpack, so he offered to place it in a secure closet near the host stand. When ordering our food I mentioned my allergies and our server was kind enough to take the time to suggest and check off some of his favorite sushi rolls as well as rolls that do not contain my allergies. Our table ordered: miso soup, veggie roll (sorry, I don't remember the name, but i'll provide a photo!), udon bowl with chicken skewers, and sirloin teriyaki skewers with side of rice. While waiting, our servers ensured our waters were full and my boyfriend ordered a hot toddy, which he felt was too strong and didn't have honey. So if you prefer to have honey in your hot toddy just make sure to ask! The food didn't take long at all to come out. I didn't get a chance to taste the veggie roll, but it smelt delicious and the feed back from my brother and boyfriend was two thumbs up! So, I hardly ever eat steak, but I was on vacation and thought I'd give it a shot and I definitely was not disappointed. Usually the texture of steak gets to me, but I enjoyed Yama's sirloin very much. It wasn't too "chewey" and had just the right amount of juices. The vegetable tempura that came along the udon tasted fresh as well. Overall the family and I were pleased with the food. There were two gentlemen in particular that helped our table. We felt that the service was great. We were frequently checked on, but not in an overwhelming manner. They also had a good sense of humor! As far as prices go..they are pretty pricey, but given the locale I believe it's to be expected and well matched with the quality of the food. We had a great time here. Sat outside on a Wednesday night, beautiful setting. We had the sea weed salad, I had Saba (mackerel) and the caterpillar roll. All were pretty good. Other members of my party had the Udon and they liked it as well. What I really enjoyed was the service -- the hostess was very friendly and attentive. Our server, Maya, was very attentive, knowledgeable, and helpful. She seemed like she knew the menu really well, was very patient, kind, efficient -- it's good to see great service! This is a tough review. Why? The food was good overall but there were so many minuses that I took the 3 stars to a 2 and hope they figure out how easy it is to improve. Woman server was dressed in a nice see through negligee sort of think with a black bra under. This should have saved her but didn't. We ordered a good quality cold sake. I asked for sliced cucumber stickers for it. Server said they didn't have cucumber. Another roll that the host recommended oddly came with cucumber. Uh huh. We ordered 4 spicy scallop hand rolls. Server said they don't have scallops. Odd for a sushi restaurant. Ordered a Tai (Snapper) special (2 orders of 2 piece each). Host came by 15 minutes later to inform they were out and offered 2 other at the same price. They decided to make that 2 orders of 2 different things each $24. So they didn't have what was on the menu for $24 and subbed 4 orders of something else at $48. Sashimi orders (2 pieces per order) were tiny, thin slices at very high prices i.e. $12-14 for salmon or yellowtail. I don't mind paying the Vail tax but at least serve a decent cut. They should be embarrassed to serve tiny at $$$$ but it's Vail and evidently they can get away with it. There were more missteps like above in service but as I said, what they did serve tasted competent but for a $120/person dinner, just doesn't cut it. Never again. read more

Service was dismal. Our waiter seemed pretty much annoyed we were there. We were in a largish group- about 10. He refused to split the check. Then told us he forgot to add gratuity (which all restaurants do for large groups) and then he added it anyway. Hoping we'd tip twice? He disappeared for long stretches. Overall bad experience. Horrible service! Avoid eating here if you can. If I could give zero stars, I would. Knowing how busy Vail is during the winter, I went in the day before and asked if we could place a takeout order to pick up the next day. The woman at the service counter said that we should just call in the day of and we should have no problem. BAD ADVICE... When I called to order takeout when they opened, the person who answered said they could not handle any takeout orders. Huh?!? He then proceeded to mention how he "didn't have time to talk" and when I asked if he could add me to the take-out que where we are more than happy to pick up the food in 2hrs, he hung up!!! RUDE BEYOND BELIEF! I understand there are labor shortages in the hospitality/ restaurant industry at the moment but the level of unprofessionalism from the person answering the phones was next level. Two words. Inland sushi. It's so wrong.....but it came recommended from someone who claimed to be a "sushi snob". And it was busy...typically a good sign but I'm chocking it up to people not understanding how wrong it is to eat sushi inland. First off it smells like dead fish. Sushi places should not smell like rotten fish. And the things we ordered also smelled like old fish....probably because it's inland fish. The joint is less than clean. The bathroom was icky and the whole place just seemed like it needed a bleach bath. Was very excited to visit Yama once again but was met with resistance and a sour attitude from our server Maja. We were told that our entire order needed to be placed at once; fine. Understood. We were then told that there were only two orders worth of salmon left (mind you it was only 7pm). We placed our entire order and then were now told that there was no salmon left at all for the night and she then gave us a moment to decide if we wanted to stay and continue our evening. We said that we would need to review since many of our items included salmon. Within minutes (which usually isn't an issue), our dumplings came out but this wasn't appreciated since our children would not have what to eat with the salmon shortage. Her rude and dismissive response was, "this is just the reality of it." Excuse me. That's just rude. Dismissive. Insensitive. And there was never one attempt to try and pacify the situation. Nothing offered. We as a family chose to leave and find refuge at a restaurant with respectful service. Jared who was the manager/host at the time was wonderful but the service "provided" by Maja was grounds to leave and not return. We will not be returning to Yama at anytime in the future. I am now waiting on the manager to call me to rectify the situation as much as possible. Omakase isn't on the menu, but ask and they will accommodate if they are not too busy. Be sure to have a reservation, as they book up fast.
