We were looking for a place to take our out-of-town friends for lunch yesterday -- somewhere with an outdoor patio -- and stumbled across Joy Hill. The inside of the restaurant had a mid-century modern feel that reminded me of my childhood home. After sitting down and reviewing the menu, my friends decided on the frozen rosé, while I stuck with a Coke since I was driving. The soda hit the spot, but my friends found the frozen rosé a bit bitter and weren't fans. For starters, we highly recommend the garlic bread and pepperoni rolls. The sauces served with them tasted fresh and were packed with flavor. After appetizers, we ordered three pizzas and a Caesar salad. The restaurant got busier after we sat down, and our food took a little over 30 minutes to arrive. When the pizzas finally came out, they were absolutely worth the wait. They were visually appealing, and we couldn't wait to dive in. I ordered the veggie pizza, and it was so good. Our friends got the White Tiger pizza and added prosciutto, while my husband ordered the mushroom pizza with added sausage. It took us a few years to finally try Joy, but I can confidently say they make an awesome pizza in a relaxed, chill atmosphere. read more

I really wanted to love this place but we had a very mediocre experience here. The host stand was incredibly slow for seemingly no reason, with no acknowledgement of anyone waiting. There were 2 parties ahead of us when we walked in, and we didn't even talk to the host for about 15 mins. I had time to go down to the bathroom, take a call, and come back, and my fiance was still waiting, and nobody had even acknowledged him or said it'll be just a minute or anything. The restaurant was freezing cold inside, unbearably cold, so we asked to sit outside and were told there was a wait, fine not a huge deal. Except for the wait again at the host stand after we got our text, it took forever to get seated. We got the text, went back, and 2 parties ahead of us who were just walking in and weren't on the list or anything were seated outside, and finally they got to us. The host had absolutely no sense of urgency or hospitality, she was just leisurely walking around and took forever to come back after seating someone. Honestly super frustrating. I'd be less frustrated if we had gotten a "hi, I'll be with you in just a second", or even any sort of acknowledgment, but no such luck. We felt like an annoyance being there. The patio is gorgeous, such a nice spot, but it is insanely loud. I don't know what it is about it but the noise is so amplified we could barely hear other talk. And there were quite a few open tables so it wasn't packed or anything. Service was good, our waiter was on top of it and quick, but the food was fairly mediocre. We ordered the stracciatella and sourdough and it came with 6 of the absolute tiniest spears of sourdough I've ever seen...for $16. We finished it in about a minute. The pizza was good but nothing to write home about, I expected a bit of a bigger pizza for the price just based on other places we've been to in town. Good but really nothing special. Neither of us ordered a drink but we saw them walking out with cocktails and they had to be some of the smallest cocktails I've ever seen. Overall I feel like this place is pretty overpriced for what you get, and the service at the host stand kind of ruined the experience off the bat for us. We've had much better dinners for less lately, so unfortunately this just didn't do it for us. read more

Had an amazing first visit to Joy Hill! The atmosphere is casual and fun. The patio in the back is an unexpected treat! The staff was really friendly and I enjoyed the open concept kitchen where you could watch them preparing the food. The menu has a nice variety of options including gluten free and vegetarian options. We didn't have any drinks this nice but the beverage menu seemed nice as well. We both got a pizzette and a salad and everything was incredible! My friend ordered a gluten free sausage and jalepeno and enjoyed it. I got the side salad with house vinegrette and the prosciutto, burrata, and arugula- it was absolutely amazing. My mouth is watering thinking about how tasty it was. Joy Hill is a proudly South Broadway spot serving woodfired pizza with a Brooklyn influence and a Denver feel. They focus on naturally leavened sourdough pizzas made with a starter brought from Brooklyn and high quality ingredients, and it shows. I'm very lucky to live about 7 minutes away, which honestly feels like a blessing because it's just that good. Everything impressed me, starting with the frosé and then the lunch special, which is one of the best deals I've seen: any pizza, a house salad, and a bottle of wine. It's hard to beat. The pizzas themselves are sourdough-based and really well done. You can tell there's a lot of care put into the ingredients and execution. The space is also a big part of the experience. The rooftop patio has great mountain views, and there are plenty of spots if you want to hang out, work, or just relax with a coffee. Overall, this is an easy go-to spot for me now. Popped in on a weekday just about when Happy Hour was about to start. Was going to get it to go, and have a marg at the bar while waiting but then was drawn in by their fun Valentine's Day decor and then further back to where there was a sprawling back patio! It's been unusually warm in Denver, so I decided to take advantage and hang on the back patio, hit a spicy margarita, FaceTime with a friend and have a happy hour Mushroom Sally pizza with bison meatballs (as we do in Denver). The food was all very pretty - oh I did get a side salad with Green Goddess dressing. Very light and delicious with fresh light lettuces. The pizza was a perfect 8" size with slices of the meatballs layered onto the mushroom white pizza. So delicious on an errands day while out and about! We finished off the meal with mini cannolis in each of their flavors that day (birthday cake, chocolate, and cardamom chai); my favorite being the birthday cake given it was the closest taste to a standard cannoli. We decided to go and try Joy Hill after reading in Westword Magazine that they were their top pick for sourdough pizza in the Denver area. We ordered the cashew ricotta & hummus plate which consisted of their house made cashew ricotta, spicy Calabrian chile hummus, assorted pickled & fresh vegetables with sourdough focaccia. This is a really great way to start a meal. The stand out was the spicy hummus for sure. The mix of fresh and pickled veggies was perfect and the focaccia delicious. We also got two pizzas, one was the chili's & pep (tomato sauce, mozz, caciocavallo, grana padano, pepperoni, pickled jalapenos, honey and oregano) and the other was the prosciutto and burrata (tomato sauce, garlic, mozz, prosciutto, arugula, burrata and grana padano). Both were really good. We did find ourselves wishing each pizza would have just had one or two more components to them...for example perhaps the prosciutto and burrata would have had a balsamic glaze and olive oil drizzle on top...that would have made it even better. Everything was fresh and tasty, we just wished for just a little more somethin somethin to set both over the top. We finshed with a chocolate cannoli that was so delicious! Our waiter was exceptionally friendly and helpful. It was our first time here and so we were asking for recommendations on appetizers as we were undecided on what to get. He really took his time to explain not only the most commonly ordered apps, but also his personal favorites. Tucked in the south side of Broadway is a gem called Joy Hill. And boy does it bring me joy. From the fresh chewy but sift wood fire crust, to the unique flavor profiles of the chai old fashioned against the margarita pizza. Joy hill is a vibe. They have several sections inside this otherwise you would be cramped but they have it laid out so well. Service is always top notch and they haven't had a questionable experience yet.
