Inside is where it's at either at the bar or in the two section of the restaurant. If you get a window seat you can people watch on Tennyson AND be a part of the taproom action! It's called ambiance sweety. Nifty. Honestly the staff is great. Special shout out for Chase and Lauren. Lots of personality and friendly. Good service and the food is quick. Drinks are always quick but sometimes during really busy times food takes a second. GOOD. Please make my pizza with love and affection. We had the pear salad, Detroit style pizza with red onions and jalapeños, New York style pizza with mushrooms, and bread pudding. The pear salad was delicious and unique. The Detroit style pizza was better than the New York style pizza. I appreciated the vegan options on the menu, with no additional cost! It would have been great if there were a non-dairy ice cream alternative. Service was plentiful and friendly, and the vibes are casual and fun with plenty of seating (mostly tables and chairs inside and picnic tables outside). It would have been appreciated if the outdoor area had heat lamps--when it started to get windy and cold, we had to ask to go inside. We tried this place and another very well known deep dish pizza place in the area and quality-wise we found they were very comparable. This place easily gets the nod over the other place we went to because the Happy Hour price is an unbeatable deal (plus the other place charged an exorbitant price for ranch dressing while Hops & Pie did not). I have had deep dish all over the country and you'd be hard pressed to make a better pizza than what Hops and Pia is dishing out. Also, at least for the deep dish, they are ALL "build your own" style and you pay by the topping. I went with a group for a friend's birthday. We met up on a Saturday so we could enjoy their special, the "Saturday Session." This consists of 2 slices of their pizza of the day and 3 pints selected from their draft list, which is extensive. The pie of the day was Margarita. Their tasty red sauce with fresh mozzarella, garlic and fresh basil. So simple, so delicious and all on top of their sourdough crust. Of course, I got a side of ranch to go with my slices. Theirs is made in house and is most excellent. After careful deliberation, I started my pints with Shadow Council from Cerebral Brewing, a delicious black IPA. I always look for the dark beers. This one was moderate at 6.5%. My second pint I trended a bit lighter with Westbound & Down's Mexican Lager, The Coloradan. 4.9% was a nice palate cleanser before I went big with my last choice. La Negra Reserve from La Cumbre Brewing Company, a 10.5% imperial stout rounded our my session for the day. We had a table of ten and our server had no issues with splitting our our checks. She checked on us regularly and kept our session moving smoothly. Toward the end, she brought out a chocolate drizzled rice crispy treat for the birthday boy and we all sang. Hops & Pie has become one of my neighborhood classics that I love bringing visitors to, especially if they have kids since there's an outdoor play around. They specialize in Detroit styled square pies, but don't sleep on their NY styled pizzas! Both are good and sourdough based, which I like because it makes it airier with a good crunch. There are weekly/daily specials on their board outside, which we have tried a few times in the past but always decide that ordering custom is the way to go. They also have a large tap list so it's a great place to hang out for a couple of hours. I've heard great things about their sandwiches but haven't had a chance to try yet. read more

I got to try a few new places that have great beer selections on my most recent trip to Denver. One of those was Hops and Pie. The tap list is great, and the food is even better. I don't have a pic, but the deep dish pizza is to die for. And is the perfect size for carbo-loading while sipping on some of the best beer in the world. They also do small pours, one of the few places, so I really REALLY appreciated that. Maman: An Imperial Stout from Perennial that they aged in Rittenhouse Rye Barrels. For reference, it is the base beer they use for their adjuncted barrel aged stouts, so you know it's mighty delicious. Jasper With Peacharine: A Double IPA from Fidens using their base flagship Jasper, but with one of the best hops around - Peacharine. Assassin With Coconut, Pecan And Vanilla (2023): An Imperial Stout from Toppling Goliath Barrel Aged before adding Coconut, Pecan, and Vanilla. Reminds me a lot of a chocolate truffle infused with bourbon I had in Kentucky on the Bourbon Trail. So unfortunately I had to get takeout, but I ordered a Caesar salad and fries, so what could go wrong? The salad was pretty good, dressing was kinda seafood-y which isn't really my favorite, but the leaves were fresh and the croutons seemed homemade. The fries tasted like they were sprinkled with dirt and had been microwaved about 5 times before being given to me, the white sauce that comes with them was pretty gross too. Overall I felt both items were overpriced for the quality and flavors I got. I would return to try their pizza, but I'm definitely staying far away from these fries. The beer selection was pretty good, 5/5. The pizza was meh, below average, 2/5. The crust was decent, but the sauce tasted like a can of tomatoes in the blender. Very acidic and no seasoning. The cheese separated and turned to pools of oil and rubbery, which is a sign of cheap low quality cheese. The bread pudding was disgusting, 0/5. The caramel sauce was so salty, it was inedible. The bread pudding itself was weird, more like a gross, mealy sheet cake. Wanted to like this place because I love the beer selection and Detroit style pizza, but this is another over hyped Denver restaurant that is not worth trying. I've been to at least a dozen better pizza places in Denver, and not many worse ones. read more

I can't say enough good things about my experience at Hops & Pie! I was looking for a place to host a going away get together for about 20 people. Someone suggested this place so I reached out via email and talked with Leah, who informed me they could set aside some tables outside on their patio at no cost, which was amazing as most other places wanted to charge us a fee with F&B minimum. I wasn't sure what to expect but when I arrived we had 4 tables set aside on their very busy patio with my name on them! They allowed me to set up a cake with some decorations and asked if there was anything I needed. The service was amazing all night, the beers were flowing, the food was delicious and everything came out so fast! The patio itself is super cute with a little lawn area and lots of TVs displaying sports games. It was the perfect low key night and everyone had so much fun. We've tried a lot of pizza places around the west side of the neighborhood and this one has won our hearts. The dough is outstanding. Can't go wrong with either NY or Detroit style- they're both great. Our 1 year old loved the pineapple we had on our pizza so next time I'm definitely ordering some on hers as well. For as many pizzas as they cook and as busy as it was that Saturday afternoon, it really didn't take too long to get our pizzas which was awesome. We made the trek from East Denver last Sunday to revisit an old favorite, Hops & Pie. See my previous review for background. Much has changed, but it remains my favorite place in town for pairing beer and pizza that rise above the mids. What's new since 2019? Good: Success brings expansion and the patio provides a great place to chill with more seating. Additional creative menu items abound. Today's butternut squash/apple soup was a delicious surprise that tips its hat to the owners' culinary backgrounds. Servers are much more friendly than they used to be. A matter of taste: H&P switched to sourdough crust a while back. I get it, but I miss their old crust. Sourdough's commonplace, but the old crust's uniqueness set H&P apart. I liked it better. Sourdough just doesn't work for me with the Detroit-style. Too chewy and cumbersome, but it's great with thin crust. YMMV. Lame: Pizza this good should not come with packets of cheap parmesan that detract from the pie itself. San Marzano cellulose? No thanks. Still four stars for a superlatively curated beer selection with quality grub and good vibe. read more

On our last night visiting Denver we wanted to relax with some good pizza and beer. The name of the restaurant was kind of says it all. We were greeted and seated when we arrived. There's plenty of seating with a bar & table area to the left, two & four top tables in the center, and a large outdoor area. We took a two top in the center room. It looked and felt like a small, neighborhood pizza place. We chose a large sourdough New York style with a few toppings (so we would have some left over slices for lunch the next day) and a couple of Colorado brewed draft lagers. The beers were light enough that they did not weigh the pizza down. It was a good accompaniment for the pizza. The pizza was the star of the show. The Neapolitan-style sourdough crust came out soft and crunchy (airy and crisp). The toppings and sauce were fresh and tasty. This was easily one of the best pizzas we've had this year. Made with our toppings, we were in our comfort zone. Next time, we'll be adventurous and go with the Artisan pie of the month. Just wanted to mention, they also have appetizers & salads, sandwiches, and desserts. But I was focused on the pizza tonight. read more

3.5/5. Finally made it in to Hops & Pie late on a Sunday afternoon. There was not a wait and we got our food within about 20 mins of sitting down. The outside area had great vibes with picnic tables, patio tables, and some spots in the shade. We ordered a slice of the day (Sicilian with bacon, camelotes onions, goat cheese, and maybe another thing or two I'm forgetting!) and it was pretty disappointing. The slice tasted old and like it was just reheated out of the fridge. The crust had a nice sourdough flavor, but cheese was super rubbery and lacked flavor. There were very few pieces of bacon. Would not order again. We also got a large NY style, 1/2 plain 1/2 pepperoni. This was much better! Again, the crust was the best part, and it wasn't the greatest pizza we've had, but it was still tasty and we enjoyed it. Biggest area for improvement from our experience was the sauce. This is a great neighborhood spot for families or groups to hangout, but the pizza (specifically the Detroit style) is below average. If you're coming for the pizza, and you're familiar with Detroit style, set your expectations low and hope to be surprised. It's a cheese bomb on top of bread that needs more flavor. I tried the husky fries which was a huge portion and more than enough to share with our group of 4, and also got a small artisan pie of the month New York Style. I loved the fries, they're a thicker cut but not as thick as a steak fry so it is nice and crispy without feeling like you're just eating a baked potato. The pizza was fine, way too much cheese for me to enjoy but that could be a pro for others. Everything also came out so fast even though they were fairly busy on a Sunday afternoon, I was really impressed with how fast our server got our orders taken. Blessed to have finally eaten at Hops & Pie. So good! I'm not normally a huge pizza fan, but my friend brought me here to enjoy hops and pie before going to an Avalanche game. The beer board is a little hard to read at first, but once I understood how it was laid out, I was pleased with the variety of taps available. Something to match every food item on the menu. My friend and I shared the Artisan Pie of (that) Month, which had Pesto, Italian Sausage, Shitake Mushroom, Smoked Mozzarella, Candied Jalapeno, Red Onion & Shaved Parmesan. Finished with EVOO Drizzle of course. Fresh and packed with flavor. Definitely want to come back again and try more pizza combinations. Just arrive early to avoid parking challenges! read more

Quirky in a good way. Totally reminded us of Grinders in KC (and that's a huge compliment). Went because we wanted to get out of downtown area and Hops & Pies kept coming up on my "best pizza in Denver" searches. Sunday early evening and street parking wasn't too bad. Nice outdoor area but there was a 30 minute wait there because Denver was finally getting sunshine and no crazy winds. We just opted to sit inside across from the bar. (It's small but there seemed to be plenty of seats.) I wish I could remember our server's name because he was so awesome. Ordered the featured artisan pie (a triple pepperoni with great cheeses and a honey drizzle---can't remember the cheese but it was fantastic). We both had skipped lunch so we finished off a large pie with a couple of beers. Beer selection is stellar. While this is totally a bar with pizza (or pizza with beer) it seemed very kid friendly. Have been wanting to try hops and pie for the longest time and so glad we finally did. We were able to sign up on a virtual wait list which was awesome since we live pretty close and were able to line up the time we left with when we would be seated. We still got there a few minutes before our reservation and we're able to sit around their outdoor fire pits and order drinks. Such a fun cool vibe and doesn't leave you out wandering on the streets! We were seated, however, before our drinks were even delivered and the staff were able to seamlessly move our tab over to our table. Since it was our first time we tried a smorgasborg of things. Starting with their cheesy sticks which were so yummy! We also got their loaded fries, but regular and veggie which were really yummy and loved that they had an option with tofu! For pizza we all tried a bunch of different ones but my favorite was the Detroit style which we ordered with marinara mozzarella and some veggies. So yum!!! Their hot honey was also awesome although there was something off about their ranch that I didn't love. My one complaint is that some of their draft pours were a little weak for the price but what are you gunna do? Finally, I loved the laid back vibe of it all.
