Great beer, but could skip the food! I recently checked out Alley Brews. I LOVE a local spot, particularly a women-owned one. The woman working was really friendly and welcoming. My partner and I chose a picnic table outside, since we had our dog with us, and we were quite comfortable. The interior seating looked great, as well, but we didn't want to intrude with our dog. We ordered a beer each (both of which were great) and some food. I am knocking off a star simply because the food really was not great. The little pizzas were (and I say this with almost complete certainty) the little pizzas you get at Costco. The burrito tasted really stale, and I watched as the woman took it out of a drawer and stuck it into a microwave. I imagine it had been there all day and was made maybe the day before/that morning. It is clear that the food is not fresh, and it is very basic. I would not come here for food, but I am excited to come back for drinks! Glad to see this spot still brewing and innovating. Eleven brews. NA and gluten free options too. This is the bones of Alley Brews. I will say as they've expanded they still keep beer the focus. You can expect seasonals and of the standards a few Belgians, a west coast IPA, hazy IPA, English mild, stout, and one or two lighter fruited beers. The coffee is a new setup but a nice bonus because Alley Brews is now open earlier. Great spot to study or work remote if you can. Americano, latte, cappuccino, cold brew, chai and matcha lattes hit or iced. Oat milk is the only milk alternative but it's a brewery so I'll take it. Maybe in future almond, soy, or coconut? It's early. Grab some pancake bites or a breakfast burrito. You really can't go wrong. Liquor is new too so grab a margarita, Bloody Mary, Negroni, old fashioned, or the classic espresso martini. They also have a wine selection too so a bit of everything for everyone. Shout out to Chelsea, Liz, Cara, Megan, and Jaimie for making fun and hospitable space. Especially this day and age. Dear Chelsea, challenge accepted. In a time when so many breweries are struggling, I think Alley Brews is doing what is needed to stick around for a while. Aside from continuing the legacy of making excellent beer, they also have extended the snacking options. Some people might not view this as important, but for those of us who frequent the Oriental Theater, not having to go elsewhere to get food, and potentially dealing with a time crunch, this is a lifesaver. The mini pizzas are fine. The pretzel bites are excellent. The prices are reasonable. They also add or remove items based on how well they're doing and this keeps the options fresh. I think they took a very bold move when they decided to start opening at 9 AM for coffee service. I know this is a hard thing for many small businesses to do because it requires significantly more staffing. Indeed, two incarnations ago, when this was Desteeg, they didn't open until 4 PM, which I always thought was rather odd, until I figured out it was so they could just have one shift. The coffee is excellent by the way. Everyone who works here is extremely pleasant, and uniformly amusing. During a time when we no longer have FlyteCo Brewing and we no longer have Call to Arms Brewing it is nice to see that we still have some excellent options. read more

Tidbit!!! I'm coming back here for all their spins on trivia, like Word Nerds and Music Bingo. They have such a cool line-up of events listed! Onto the review -- Navigate yourself down the alley between Grateful Gnome and the silver building on Tennyson Street. You'll find a decent sized patio as well as an inside space with more than a few counter tops and seats at the bar. There's food. There are beers. We enjoyed both our nitros. And there are other drink options as well, including coffee, wine and non-alcoholic. Definitely bring your groups here. We saw 2 birthday parties when we were there! Finally, service -- we were there on a Saturday afternoon, which meant that it was busier than usual. The beertenders were on top of drinks, as well as clearing table tops. My wife and I made our first trip to this rendition* of this charming little brewery tucked in an alley (as the name suggests). The very pleasant ladies who run and staff this place clearly enjoy their jobs. The beer is very good, and features some styles that you don't see at most of Denver's craft breweries and pubs. My wife likes her beer malty and rich, and I like mine hoppy, and we were each able to get something that suited our tastebuds. There is a small food menu that reads "curated by Hescher's BBQ" - we've had food from their truck a few times and it's quite good, but we'd just eaten at Hops and Pie a couple blocks south and weren't hungry. Great spot. 2.5 stars. Don't get me wrong. The customer service is decent. I just REALLY don't like the beer. I try to recognize when beer is high quality, even if it's not my favorite, but something felt off about the taste both times I came here. That's right, I already decided to give Berkeley Alley TWO tries. I've tried all their IPAs and even their coffee pale ale. However, some perks that others might enjoy... they have board games, a beer club, and patio seating. Discounts I didn't know about because people were sitting at the bar in front of where they were posted. Dry January seems like it was centuries ago. And for the love of God, I'm glad I decided not to choose March or April to go dry! All that to say, De Steeg was one of my first stops on Feb. 1st earlier this year. This hidden alley microbrewery has been cranking out experimental beers since 2013. I believe its owned and operated by a husband and wife, too. But seriously, the location is extremely hidden. When they mean off Tennyson in the alley, they ain't kidding! When we visited, we were greeted warmly and opted to sit outside with the pitch perfect weather. Oh man, how I long for brewery patios! They have board games on deck, as well as a complimentary popcorn machine. This place reminds me of Seedstock by me. Beers are tasty, too. The Farmhouse IPA was unlike any I've had. Super laid-back spot (you enter through a back alley so it's not even faxing a street) with a cool interior, chill patio seating, and relaxed yet attentive service. The beer is the best part though - as it should be. They have quite a selection of robust, strong, unique, flavorful brews! This may have become my favorite brewery in the highlands. Small area and a very local feel. Last night was my first time there but the bar tender and patrons made me feel like one of the cast members from Cheers. I am a dark beer fan and this was one of the best stouts I've ever had. They have popcorn and water for free, and a good selection of snacks to purchase for very cheap. The bathrooms are really nice and one has a baby changing station which is awesome! I almost don't want to review this spot because I want to keep it a secret! This small brewery is almost like a speakeasy because it's located in an alley. I don't think there was parking in the alley, but there's plenty of street parking. It's a tiny bit hard to find, but if you look around, there are a couple signs pointing you to De Steeg Brewing. We visited on Friday night (Feb 12) and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't super busy. It's a small place, so there's not a ton of seating, especially with social distancing. All the beers on draft are gluten-reduced, which was a huge plus for me (as someone who is gluten-intolerant). They also have seltzer that is made in-house. My boyfriend tried the French Saison, Barrel Aged Oatmeal Maple Stout, and De Steeg Tripel. I had the Back Alley Seltzer. I had a sip of each of his beers, and although I'm not a huge fan of the stout, it was actually pretty good--not too heavy. The seasonally seltzer was a tropical seltzer, however, the "tropical" part of it was so light, that honestly I couldn't tell what flavor it was. The nice thing though was that it wasn't a sweet seltzer--personally, I think sweet seltzers are kinda nauseating. Best of all, the bartender was multi-tasking, and still attentive to all the customers. Love this spot and will most definitely come back soon! read more

Imperial Pumpkin is delightful and 10.8%. They also have a rotating hops menu that varies every week: the Hops Education. This is an impressive brewery that packes a lot of punch considering the size of the place the owner, Craig, and his team are working with. Ironically (in my opinion) tucked behind a pilates/yoga studio, this brewery can be hard to find. But when a true brew lover is looking for a good beer, they will know where to find it. That's why I like De Steeg. It's for the true, blue beer lovers out there. You can tell in the quality of the beer, that a lot of blood, sweat, and tears go into their love for the craft. They don't need a large space and leave everything to the beer and your experience with the brewery. A very miniscule decor - all they need is a large chalkboard overhead to display the available beers, a very nice and attentive staff, and of course - a complimentary popcorn machine. Try De Steeg out on a Friday at 4 before First Fridays on Tennyson or just to enjoy a well made brew with some fresh pop kernels to accompany. read more

Why 5 stars? Because everything was just as I'd want it. --- --- --- My first visit to a Denver brewery, and I definitely picked a good one! I chose De Steeg because they seemed to brew a lot of really solid Belgians. I was not disappointed with the selection. On top of that, I loved the very laid back vibe. That may have been due to the fact that I was on "vacation hours," and not visiting during a peak beer drinking time. The bartenders were super friendly, and it was slow enough that my brother and I were able to have conversations with both of them, as well as some of the other patrons. They were even nice enough to charge my iPhone for me, as I was nearly out of juice from my cross-country venture. De Steeg = 5 thumbs up! read more

I know most of the folks in this neighborhood are new to it and therefor wouldn't know that alleys, especially un-lit dark alleys used to be the place to get mugged or worse back in the day. Just sayin' yo', be wary and safe. Now I just gave a new brewery in Golden a 3 star for only having three beers available but the difference here is even though they only have three beers (which the brewer was saying probably won't last through the weekend FYI. Drink early.) these beers were all pretty good and the lowest ABV was in the 8's with the Winter Warmer closer to 10! Yeah, it has the garage converted into an apartment kinda decor feel and a dark alley entrance but come on buck up, indulge your inner guerilla. read more

So it took a bit of detective work to find this place, but sure glad we did! (Psst! Its on the alley to the east of Tennyson, between 43rd St & 44th St) The place was semi-full when we arrived on a Sunday afternoon. We quickly grabbed a table and decided to order some samples. Samples are $2 and there were about 8 beers to choose from. The place is kind of small and is filled to capacity with seating. Right after we arrived a few more groups arrived and the place was full in just a few minutes. They did have 1 TV with golf on, but other than that it's just seating, a bar and a free popcorn area (which is kind of cool). On to the beers... my favorites were the Belgian & French Saison's... both were delicious. The pale ale they were out of and we tried the house and two others which were good if you like slightly darker beers. The staff was very friendly and helped us decide and even gave us 1 free sample since it was our first time there and everything. They also told us about another good brewery in Fort Collins. The only thing I which would make this place a little better is if the seating wasn't as squished in and/or there was outside seating or a small patio area of some sort off the entrance. That would be super cool. Anyways, loved the beer, loved the place, great staff & free popcorn. We will definitely be back. read more

Fantabulous! After two visits, I am quite impressed. First, I love that it is hard to find and weirdly located in an alley! The staff is great, the vibe is cool, and the beers are amazing! I shared a full sampler recently and they were all great! I don't know what their magic secret is but they made every different type have a distinct flavor that was perfection. Not too overwhelming, but flavorful. Also, they serve the samples in lovely glasses and they are 2$/ea. They look, smell, and taste great! They have popcorn, local art, a couple of large flat screens and a lot of tables. There were even a bunch of well behaved lil kiddos there! One of the better breweries in the Denver Metro area. In a grand effort to use a few more of the Imbibe Passport deals, the BF and I made our way over to De Steeg off of Tennyson. Now, I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting, but I was actually blown away by De Steeg. Having read many reviews indicating that the brewery is actually located off of the alley behind a few restaurants off of Tennyson and 44th, we marched our way down Tennyson, caught a glimpse of a sign pointing the way to De Steeg, and we meandered our way through a few yards to reach the alley. And sure enough, there was the big open brewery. (Note to future first timers, just come down the alley!) The garage doors were open during our visit, so the large space felt even larger. We shimmied up past the many tables and took a seat at the bar. While we only sampled two pints during this trip, both were absolutely delicious. I can't wait to get back and do an entire flight sampler to really get into the nitty gritty of their brews. Even after just two beers, I was super impressed with what De Steeg is creating! They've got an awesome space, although a bit awkward to find, filled with lovely locals, a great staff that is clearly passionate about their products, and most importantly, excellent beers!
