Huge portions of rice dominate entrees. But portions of protein are very small. Quality of food is decent but the high prices and small portions are not justified. the food was super tasty when we ate it. then we discovered why on our way home...MSG. we both are sensitive to it. Dry mouth, unquenchable thirst, complete exhaustion and sleepiness. and then the service. Daniel our server thinks highly of himself. but never checked on us after taking our orders. i had to actively seek him out and flag him down to get my beer to go with the entree. the rest of the staff doesn't know how to serve, no clearing of the appetizer dishes, no refilling of the water bottle, their own arms and dishes clashing when putting food on the table. and the noise! 730pm dinner. wood floor. wood wall panels. tiles on the wall and smooth ceiling. dishes clanging, a few loud diners and the rest all raising their voices, including us, to talk to each other. really intolerable when considering this is not a sports bar. read more

Admittedly, the service is excellent but we went on a Friday, and the restaurant is WAY TOO LOUD. There is virtually no sound baffling so we could not hear each other at dinner. I'm Persian, so I'm 1) always a sucker for the Persian spots in LA and 2) heartbroken that we only have a handful of respectable Persian spots anywhere near us in DC. So of course when word went around that there's a new spot opening where Chef Geoff's used to be in Tysons, I thought "well duh of course it'd be planted in Porsche City." Jokes and jeers aside, it's clear Joon's been playtesting their opening night for weeks as the service was pretty solid right out the door (something that was painfully absent from some of the other places I've reviewed since covid). Service was prompt, the sparkling water was gratis (+1 star), and the service team evidently memorized all the details about the menu. Downside for me in coming here is that being keto means I had to get a bit crafty with what I could get. I spared them the indignity of preparing a Soltani without rice--which would've essentially been two skewers of meat on a plate--but they were at least able to accommodate my need for the egg yolk (!) on top of the meats. I can't exactly recommend coming to Joon *alone* if you're doing Keto, but if you're with friends, have them put your rice to good use and you're good to go. Still, the traditional persian dishes were transformed by the simple addition of egg yolk, which elevated them above what you might get at e.g Shamshiri. I also ended up smearing the sabzi butter all over the kabob in addition to the egg yolk, which might be treasonous but ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯ The bluegreens, browns, whites, and golds are a tidier and cleaner aesthetic than I've come to expect from most other middle eastern places that have a sloppier implementation (the literal greenhouse in the toilet bowl building comes to mind), and if you're at all familiar with the Jonathan Adler aesthetic, you'll probably feel at home here. Which is to say that it's the exact opposite of Maydan, though easily just as good given that apparently Chris Morgan is involved. In all, four stars for the food and service. The only reason I didn't give a raw five stars for the food is because of the lack of obvious restricted diet indications (gf, vegetarian/vegan, etc) But... the sparkling water was free. I had the privilege of dining in this establishment a few weekends ago. I've worked in restaurants for 13 years and can be critical of places to eat. But between staff guidance, quality and intention of food, meeting the executive chef & founder, and a tour from Caro (events & catering), I've had an excellent experience with Joon. The evening we dined in, we sat at the bar and were greeted by a gentleman who got us started with water and provided us a sample of two wines we were considering. He later seemed shifted to service bar position and Grant was with us for the rest of the evening. Grant was kind, approachable and knowledgable about the menu. Every question about food, wine, and history of the restaurant, he has an answer for. It was so hard to pick what to order from the menu, because everything looked amazing! We took some of Grant's suggestions and were very pleased. Every dish was balanced, flavorful, intentional, memorable and recommendable. We reflected on every bite and could hardly believe the level of flavor. Our wine selection of Pinot Gris Rose was excellent with the majority of what we picked (eggplant dip, fried sardines, Lamb rib chops with sour cherry rice) Midmeal, we saw a woman in a lovely white cape walking around schmoozing. She eventually came over to us, and we were pleased to find out she was THE Najmieh, executive Chef & founder, sharing her story and love with patrons. She was a joy to speak with and we loved hearing about her abbreviated journey to get to this culmination of her career. We finished the meal with the very rich & hearty Bastani-E Gol-O Bolbol and went home happy, enriched and inspired. Would absolutely go back and recommend to others. read more

I came here today with my family for lunch. Our waitress was so nice and attentive her name was Justice. The wait for our food was longer than usual but she gave us additional complimentary dishes while we waited. She was actively checking on us periodically to see if we needed anything. They gave free appetizers got us to snack on while we waited for the food. We ordered the whole chicken rotisserie platter and the kabob platter. Both dishes were delicious! They had a wide selection of Persian and Instrumental music. The setup was simple yet elegant. It's a nice place to visit for a special occasion such as a graduation celebration. read more

Joon is a solid 4/5. They are a newer restaurant and so they have a few kinks to work out but I'm really hopeful it will take off and become popular. The aesthetic is beautiful from the moment you walk in. You can tell how much time effort and money was put into designing the restaurant and it is stunning. The vibe is Tiffany's meets the Middle East. Even the restrooms were stunning. Food was very good but not OUTSTANDING. We started with complimentary bread and a scoop of "zaytoon parvardeh," herb butter and feta (?) cheese. The zaytoon parvardeh was like a ground dip consistency which is not what zaytoon parvardeh is. Both the breads and comp sides were ok. We ordered mast mooseer and kashk bademjoon. Both were great and I would order again. For entrees my friend and I split the soltani with barg and kubideh (side note they gave us a small side plate each to share when we asked for plates, way too small and would have been a nice touch to just split for us). We asked for the barg to be medium well and the kubideh well done. Unfortunately the barg was still mooing in many portions and the kubideh was more like medium well. While my friend ate her portion minus the raw parts, I let the server know as a heads up and was just planning to take mine home and heat it up. Our server was amazing during the whole dinner, and after showing him the mooing parts he took it back and brought us each a new piece to go. Very much appreciated! I had a bite of my friends lamb tahjin and really enjoyed it!! All in all a good experience and was happy to see the place filling up. Their brunch deal is outstanding $45 and you get unlimited items which really allows you to be adventurous without any of the risk. The tempo is really well done, you feel transported. Joon is an upscale Persian restaurant located in the Shops at Fairfax Square in Vienna. They offer complimentary valet for patrons. Upon entering, we checked in with the hostess and seated immediately. Yasine provided stellar service throughout our meal. While waiting for our drinks, we munched on lavash with Persian herb butter, goat cheese, and olive tapenade (contains walnuts). For drinks, we enjoyed the MayBarita and Fig Old Fashioned. For appetizers, we shared an order of Lamb and Pistachio Meatballs. It was a one-of-a-kind meatball. For entrees, we shared the Braised Lamb Shoulder Pave and Kabir Kabob. It was interesting that the barg (Filet Mignon) and kubideh (ground beef) were cooked together on one skewer. We finished our meal on a sweet note. We let our server pick one for us. We received a slice of Saffron Cardamom Creme Brulee with a shortbread crust and served with cinnamon candied orange slices. It did not disappoint! read more

Yesin our server was very accommodating to let us try few item not on Brunch Menu. Yesin helped us with making choice after understanding our needs. After borrowing a cookbook from my Iranian bff, and reading about the opening of the restaurant - I just had to make the trip. And oh boy! This was THE best Iranian food I've ever had! The duck fesenjoon was rich and flavorful with all that tarty pomegranate glaze -Yum! I had to pick from everyone else's plate - roasted branzino, lamb/ pistachio meatballs...The food was just that good! Was a little surprised about the desserts - the Persian love cake was dry and too sweet. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be?? Super attentive staff gave solid recommendations on dishes to try and accounted for a few dietary restrictions-while not detracting from the flavor Pricey, but worth every penny!! Our server, Mehdi M., was extremely kind, attentive, and knowledgeable. Every suggestion he made was perfect. We were recommended the following for our Restaurant Week experience: Appetizer 1: Hummus with seasonal vegetables Appetizer 2: Pistachio and lamb meatballs Main course 1: Lamb shoulder pave Main course 2: Salmon with saffron basmati rice (Sabzi Polow ba Mahi) Dessert 1: Pistachio and rose water ice cream with rose water cookie Dessert 2: Raspberry sorbet with lemon curd Tea service: Persian black tea with saffron rock candy Every dish deserved to be savored. The hummus's vegetables had a wonderfully smokey sauce that elevated the whole dish. The lamb pave was paired with delicious peaches and carrots; the lamb fell apart at the touch of the fork and was just charred on the outside with a sweet glaze. The salmon was perfectly cooked to the requested level with a crispy skin and crisped top layer of rice, served with sweet and savory vegetables and a yogurt sauce with just a touch of harissa for warmth. The raspberry sorbet with lemon whipped cream in herb oil is worth the trip alone. Although some may claim it is not sweet enough, anyone with the slightest refinement to their palette can appreciate the delicately balanced flavors. The light and fragrant tea service was so wonderful we ordered a second pot. We just can't say enough! Please do your part to keep Joon a fixture of our community :) read more

We've been coming here like 5 times since it's opening a month ago. Love the service, love the food, and love the atmosphere. I think the rice is a bit dry but nothing intolerable. Kubide here is my favorite. It reminds of what we had back in Iran. I love this restaurant. I love Persian food in general, but this restaurant adds its special touch. The food is amazing and I especially love all the fresh vegetables they add to their dishes. The seasoning and sauces are so perfect. I took my leftovers home and my husband was eating them and commented on how good the food is, which is not like him. Went for brunch with a girlfriend. We had the small plates. Everything was tasty. But the yogurt and the lamb kebab were outstanding. Be aware only two real meat dishes. Lots of dips so the value may be a little less than some are expecting. However service was impeccable. My Bloody Mary was not good. U suggest staying away from that.
