Joon was amazing! This was my first time dining here. I had the pistachio meatballs and the mast-o musir to start. My entrée was the duck fesenjoon, which is a whole duck leg sticking in a bowl of really savory stew. Just to make sure you got your carbs in, all entrees came out with rice tahdig, a dish made of delicious basmati rice compacted and fried on the surface for the nice golden brown crispy experience. The food all tasted generally authentic with an American kick. They make a great espresso martini as well. Had a couple of those. No issues about the atmosphere; it was lively and generally upbeat. The valet parking is complementary/priced at your discretion and they take cards, so that was super convenient, I tossed the guy a $20. I came here for their brunch, and the food was well worth it. We shared with a specialized brunch for around 35-38 dollars. I wasn't sure how much food it would be considering we were sharing but it was way more food than I expected. My favorites were all the dips. They also had a lamb with potatoes which was not my favorite. We did get plenty of bread though. The French toast was so good but by that point. I was very full. The service for this place was okay. It seemed like there was some preferred treatment for other tables, and we had to ask a few times for some extras. The ambiance is great! It's a huge place and they have free valet outside. The decor was modern and really felt like you're in a different world. The lady who assisted us (forgot her name) gave great details about the menu and what to order as well as helped me pick between the lamb chops and lamb shoulder. We ordered all kinds of appetizers, octopus, hummus with lamb, meatballs, and then the lamb shoulder for the main course with the saffron rice. Everything was delicious, and the rice was a large order. Everyone got their own and we could have easily split three between the table. If I was local I would have taken it home. Tisk tisk. Absolutely loved the ambiance, the interiors are breathtaking. I loved that they have different dining areas which creates a cozier dining experience. We came for lunch on a Saturday and despite the restaurant being pretty full, it wasn't loud at all. Great acoustics! A lot of families with kids, which is great, since we came with our kids too. The food was great! The chicken kabob was tender, juicy, seasoned to perfection. Came with a huge side of rice that was enough for 4 people to share. I love love love when I have a great experience that's the perfect culmination of food, ambiance, and service that makes me want to not only come back but not want to leave. No really they turned the lights off on us lol. Thanks to Yelp (Big Ups) I found this awesome gem Joon and was able go to experience their brunch this past Sunday. It was perfect to hang with a good friend and enjoy being catered to while falling in love with so many of the dishes that we had to catch a second and third breath. Paul did a great job taking care of us and making sure our bill was correct. He inquired if there was anything we enjoyed as much as to have seconds for and brought those items out. I really wish I could have taken home the dango and kashk-e bademjan but I was being cutesie and only had a small purse with me LOL. Paul also gave us a lot of information about the restaurant and changes they've recently made. We got up to leave out and as I stood next to the bar awaiting my friend to use the bathroom, I noticed they had multiple items on my favorites list stocked. That's when Gerard approached asking if he could be a service. I soaked up more information about Joon and vowed to come back. This was an overall great visit and I really appreciate being able to talk with team members to get more insight on how restaurant's foundation and goals. We bid our goodbyes and walked around to the other side of the bar and was greeted by a bartender who also answered questions for us and gave us information about upcoming events. And if I'm being very picky, the bread did not seem freshly baked, which I would normally expect at a restaurant of this caliber. A fresh-baked option, perhaps paired with an additional dip, would have been a welcome touch--especially since places like Shamshiry and Al Borz set a strong benchmark in this regard. Went in for dinner after shopping at Tyson's corner. We got a table easily on a Saturday night. We were not very hungry so we just shared two appetizers and one main course. We started with the cucumber salad which was nice and light, had feta crumbles on top. Then we got the squash and cauliflower appetizers, it did not disappoint. IMHO close to Michelin star but not quite there yet. Relatively new Iranian restaurant to the Tyson's area in the former Cheff Geoffs location has a lot of promise. There a few things to work out. One of the things that needs no work is the food. It is exceptional in terms of quality, orientation, and preparation. The details really matter here. It's not your midnight kebab joint. It is fine dining at its best. The price points should give you that expectation. I love the brunch items here to include the lamb and hash. The French toast is amazing but sweet so I would Recommend sharing. The lamb dinner is also exquisite. Even the side veggies are not run of the mill. They use pickled mini onions and heirloom carrots. It makes a huge difference The staff are incredible and accommodating. I always feel welcome and appreciated. I love the little details. The paper clipped heart menus are adorable and the tea service is fantastic. What are items for improvement? The valet and parking. I had no idea the valet was there because there's not much signage. With construction on half of the entrance circle it's very confusing. I ended up walking both times I was there from the garage with no real safe passageway. The plates. Although beautiful they should check the quality. My plate "spun" around as I tried to eat on it becuase it was not flat. Just a little annoying. The staff maybe a little too helpful. It's just strange when there's still food and the staff come by to ask to clear it out. It's a little sad if people waste food that much. We were also the last seating of the night so I couldn't see why they needed to turn tables. The dessert. We ordered everything on the menu and pretty much everything except the chocolate pie and the apple pie had an off putting "cleaning" smell to it. It was especially evident in the rose ice cream. Bottom line: a few ups/ few downs. Overall, ok. There are some tasty plates but surprisingly this is not the best place for the lactose intolerant, so if you have that allergy, keep that in mind. For the high points, we both thought the grilled octopus was well flavored, and the cauliflower and squash dish was tasty. Finally, the top portion of the whole branzino was extremely fresh and tasty. (I credit it both to good sourcing) The problem is that the flavor was often lost because it was swimming in oil. Plus, to our surprise, the barg kabob (filet mignon) had little taste and was a little cold. Service was polite and tried to be attentive, but for this price point, they really aren't where they should be. (Of course, this is going to be server dependent). Some of the answers to questions did not always line up accurately until pressed to consult with the kitchen. Course change outs of plates and silver wear lagged a couple of times. For the price/ quality, the wine was not bad and the wine list is broad for lots of budgets. All in, we had two starters, the kabobs, the branzino for two, a shared dessert, three glasses of wine, and two non alcoholic cocktails. All in with tax and 20% tip (mostly for the effort), it was about $300. If I thought we would have more choices on our next visit (once again, this is from a lactose allergy standpoint), we might try again, but TBH, this was likely a one and done. But the DC restaurant critic class usually gives Joon high marks, so it might be worth it for you. Maybe the stars just didn't line up for us. read more

Amazing place to eat at! The decor here is stunning yet not overdoing it. Our waiter was extremely friendly, provided us with multiple recommendations, and even offered to pack up our food for us! The complimentary flatbread and assortment of "dips" was a nice addition to have at the beginning of our meal. My favorite item here was definitely the Braised Lamb Shoulder Hummus. There's an Eater video about this place which makes the food look insanely good and explains some cool cooking techniques the chefs use to achieve their flavor profiles and textures, so I had to check it out. Unfortunately there were a few big misses that disappointed us. Bread service: the complimentary dips were a nice touch, with herb butter, pistachio/olive oil/vinegar, and a goat cheese mix. The pistachio one in particular had a nuanced flavor that I really liked! However the bread had the texture and taste of a tortilla with slightly more chew. It would be great if the bread was softer and thicker to make the dip experience more enjoyable for me. The mirza ghasemi was delicious. Served inside a large roasted eggplant, the dip had the perfect balance of smokiness with the tomato and eggplant with a kick of spice from the harissa. The kebabs were insanely tender, juicy, and flavorful. 100% the most tender barg kabob and juiciest, most delicious kubideh kabob I've ever had! The duck fesenjoon had a sweet yet sour flavor profile from the stew, with a smattering of pomegranate seeds to boot. I think it was too sweet for me. The duck was fall off the bone tender. The rice looked amazing due to the crispy top, but the crispy bits didn't have any special flavor, and kept getting stuck to my teeth. Would've preferred no crispy part and all normal rice. The apple tart didn't seem like it was fresh since the sides weren't crispy at all, but the crust was the best part due to the interesting type of dough they used. Set in the upscale, corporate-feeling Fairfax Square, Joon is a relatively new elevated Persian cuisine collaboration between Michelin‑starred chef Christopher Morgan and cookbook author Najmieh Batmangli. From the exterior, the restaurant is unassuming, found inside one of the square's building (you'll need to find parking elsewhere or utilize their valet service). Inside, rich shades of peacock blue, turquoise, and white, velvet banquettes, floor-to-ceiling windows, and tile‐inset bar counter bring understated elegance. As we had made a reservation for our party of six, we were immediately led to our table at 1pm on a Thursday, where the restaurant was about half-full (mostly with corporate clientele out on a work lunch). The menu is rooted in traditional techniques and global presentation, with a wonderful blend of classic Iranian dishes such as duck fesenjoon and tahdig to more well-known Middle-Eastern fare (think hummus and falafel), with a contemporary flare from fun Middle East-inspired cocktails. There's also plenty of options to meet different dietary needs, ranging from vegan to gluten free to halal. While this is a bit pricier, it's understandable given the corporate setting and high caliber of the chefs. There is also a lunch special that is quite reasonably priced, which comes with your choice of protein, cucumber salad, mast-o musir, and chelow (saffron steamed rice) with tahdig for $20. All of our food came out within twenty minutes of ordering, which was much appreciated as this was a work lunch. Our servers were extremely attentive (perhaps almost too much so - we were checked in on almost every five minutes throughout our meal), walking us through their recommendations on the menu. We began our meal with some appetizers to share: firstly, their Seasonal Vegetable Hummus ($17) with grilled seasonal vegetables, black garlic, feta, herb oil, Persian basil was truly unique and beautifully presented, with a myriad of colors, textures, and fresh taste. It was served with a side of pillowy, luscious pita bread that soaked up the earthy hummus in a lovely way. Their Kashk-e Bademjan ($13) is composed of grilled eggplant, nana dagh, crispy onions - while I didn't love the flavor of this dish (it felt a bit muted in a sense, especially with the mushiness of the eggplant), I did appreciate the textural contrast of the crispy onion, and it was also nice when paired with the pita. Two members of our party shared the Traditional Persian Black Tea Service (32oz for $16), which came with a beautiful tray of an elegant teaset and fun saffron rock candy. They enjoyed the deep flavors of the tea, which paired nicely with the varied appetizers. I opted for their Cauliflower and Shishitos ($19), which came with a generous portion of roasted cauliflower, shishito peppers, cherry tomatoes, green tahini, and pickled pearl onions. You could really taste the freshness of the ingredients, and I appreciated the variety of richness from the tahini and acidity from the pickled onions. However, I did think there was far too much oil pooled at the bottom of the dish, making my last few bites overly greasy. The other five members of my party opted for different variations of the Pre-Fixe Lunch Special - one ordered the kubideh kabob, while another ordered the chicken kabob, and the final two opted for the herb falafel. At $20, this was quite a good deal, as it came with large portions of the selected protein (I heard the kubideh and chicken were quite tender and flavorful), along with a bright cucumber salad, a variety of dips, and a large portion of rice cooked in a stone pot with a crispy exterior. The one thing is that our server attempted to upsell a member of our party to choose the sour cherry rice with tahdig for an additional $8 - while this was certainly stunning with the tart red cherries, she found the dish too tart for her taste, and couldn't take more than a few bites. Overall, we really enjoyed our lunch at Joon - the service was attentive, the atmosphere is serene and upscale, and the food is truly unique and flavorful, with reasonable prices for a work lunch or nice dinner. The ambience and decor are quite nice. The only thing is that the restaurant is rather loud, so we couldn't even hear each other speaking across our table. The waiters don't seem to be that experienced, which is surprising with how fancy the restaurant tries to be. The plates we got for the main course were dirty with little white specks, which I mostly wiped off before asking for a new plate. The waiter and others made a show of inspecting the plates in front of us. The waiter then brought new plates and said my previous plate just had marks from the knife on it, which is not true. The new plate had the same white specks, which I at that point wiped off and didn't say anything further. We had an eggplant dish to start, chicken kabobs, and mastomusir. The quality of ingredients is good but everything was a bit too salty. I recently went here for a late Sunday brunch with a friend. Despite not having a reservation, we were able to get seats immediately. The decor is mostly understated with some Persian tilework and art. We received great service throughout our meal, ordering and receiving our food quickly. My friend and I shared the following dishes ordering a la carte (there's also a $55 all-you-can-eat brunch option): Do Piazeh Aloo: A delicious dish! The potatoes were perfectly cooked, the onions provided great crunch, the Aleppo pepper added great heat, and there was a good amount of toum. Spinach and Feta Omelet: The eggs were perfectly cooked, tons of fresh herbs and greens, and a good amount of creamy goat cheese. A good if non-distinctive vegetarian dish. Chicken Kabob: A good dish and a great portion size. We upgraded the tahdig to fava bean and dill rice, which was worth it. The rice was perfectly cooked, the tahdig was appropriately crispy and crunchy, and the fava beans and dill added great flavor and freshness. I also liked the lime, onions, and mint that came with the chicken kabob, which enhanced the flavor and balanced the heaviness of the rice and chicken. The chicken was well-cooked, extremely flavorful, and already taken off the skewer; however, it was quite salty. The portions were generous enough that we felt satisfied without feeling overwhelmed. I went here on Tuesday for lunch. It was amazing. The bar and restaurant provide a nice sense of ambiance. We ordered the lamb hummus, the chengeh kabob, and the sour cherry rice with tahdig. Chef Chris Morgan came to our table. He recommended the cauliflower and squash, a cucumber tzatziki sauce, an eggplant dish, and a garlic sauce, so we added those in. Everything was just...wow. The cauliflower and the kabob were my favorite, but every dish was "out of this world delicious". I ordered the rose/pistachio ice cream for dessert. I loved it. Appreciated the aesthetically pleasing look of It but it did not taste remarkable. The rest of the food, however was delicious. We ordered the joon kabob platter which included the chicken kabobs, beef koobideh and the lamb steak medium well. Everything was tender and juicy and even people that did not eat beef or lamb appreciated it. The hummus was delicious especially because of the pomegranate molasses, feta, pepper and olives they added to it. Whoever came up with that combo, nailed it! We wiped it clean with the complimentary lavash bread. Even the cauliflower we got as an app was delicious so if you are a vegetarian, they have great options for you. I did not taste the falafel but the sabzi pulao (rice with herbs) was yummy. I got the mango ginger mocktail and it was a refreshing little drinky drink with my meal. I came here to get takeout since I was in the area. Last time I recall, I liked the Persian love cake but this time it was very different. It still had its base cake familiarity - dense and fragrant, but the toppings are very different. However, the toppings were different with raspberry instead. It was still good--just different. I would probably say it's a 4.5, but I feel very comfortable rounding up! We arrived for a late reservation, but they were very kind and accommodating, and this is the only place for the half star removal where we sat felt like an afterthought position. So there was seating in the bar That wasn't as vibrant or as boisterous as other areas of the restaurant, and I didn't really wanna sit there, because I think it changed the vibe of the evening, but that's my only complaint. The cucumber and pomegranate salad was outstanding, the Bronzino was phenomenal, and honestly probably no need to get the fancy rice, because the saffron rice was amazing! A nice glass of cava, and a server who was readily available for all things made for a perfect evening! Highly recommend, and will certainly be back! read more

Came here with my wife for a birthday brunch. The restaurant was pretty empty but we were sat in the bar table in the farthest corner near the kitchen and bathrooms. I immediately was upset by it and wanted to leave but my wife wanted to stay. The server we had made up for the terrible seating, he was very friendly and did a good job going between our lone table and his other tables in the general seating area. The food was tasty but after looking at other reviews I realize that there were a quite a few complaints of the same seating issue (reservation or not). So i'd be mindful of that. Apart from the bad seating and being charged for refills on drinks, the food was really tasty and worth a visit. read more

I really liked everything I tried here. It was such a great experience. The food was very flavorful and every bite was so interesting and delicious. The drinks were so unique and good too! I loved my pistachio drink. It was creamy and had a distinct pistachio flavor. The desserts were good too! I was way too full by the end of the meal, but they still tasted delicious. All the appetizers were my favorite part of the meal! I would go back and I recommend this spot. read more

We visited Joon to celebrate my friend's birthday which was noted on the reservation. We arrived early so decided to grab a drink at the bar since it was still happy hour. We were disappointed in the light pour for our drinks both glasses were half full (cocktails and wine are $5 off). When I got the bill we were charged full prince when I said something to bartender he said we weren't there before 6pm. He adjusted the bill even though I could tell he didn't want to and then I went to find my friend. To my shock she was seated squeezed in at a tiny table for two by the cold front window. Not exactly the ambiance you want for your birthday (cold, technically in the lobby and crowded). I asked the hostess to move us to the main dining area as we wanted something with more of a vibe and I noted I had been there before, she said sure and then sat us in an equally terrible table in an isolated back room that looked like it was originally an additional bar area. The table was so tiny that we had a hard time with the small plates all night. Additionally, I had to tuck my coat behind me on my chair and balance my bag on the table and pray it didn't fall with the balancing of the plates. There was no vibe and no ambiance, I even said this is no better when she took us to the table but they still sat us there. When we walked past other tables there were parties of two seated at larger tables in the main dining area. Our server was great he knew the menu well and offered good suggestions everything was great minus the eggplant it had a sour taste/small that made it impossible to enjoy. The kebab was great but I actually didn't care for the way the saffron rice was prepared it was really dry. We went with the apple dish for dessert and they brought it out with a candle for my friend's birthday. We ordered the same cocktails with our dinner and noticed a much more generous pour since it wasn't happy hour which I found ironic. This was my second time at Joon and the dinner experience was much different than brunch. They offer complimentary valet. read more

First came here a couple years ago for a Yelp event and once one of my friends said they were offering bottomless food brunch, I knew I had to return! We came for brunch on Sunday and it was amazing. They have lots of different options, so we let our waiter take the reins and order for us. The portions are still huge and they don't let you take leftover food to go (bring your own Tupperware lol) so be mindful when ordering. The French toast is legit so good and that's coming from someone who doesn't generally like French toast. Definitely get the crispy rice and the kabobs! The iced coffee was delicious and really pretty but also $10 so beware. read more
