Solid Poke for Minnesota. I feel I have gone to quite a few of the known poke places in the twin cities area. The results are either I get sick from the food or the fish just tastes so bad I don't wanna eat it. At JJ'S Poke I was so happy to not get either of these two experiences. It was wonderful. The staff was very kind and quick to take my order. You order at the counter and on the board it easily lists out the steps for the ordering process. You pick your size, what base you want, protein, and then all the topping choices. I was so happy they had mixed greens as a base because I currently don't eat rice. I ordered salmon and tuna which were both relatively fresh tasting considering it's Minnesota. So no matter where we go here it is not going to be straight out of the ocean. But, nonetheless I was satisfied by the fish. They also have menu items that are suggested poke bowl combos if you don't want to go through all of the picking and choosing action. I layered my bowl in spicy mayo because why not! Spicy mayo is so tasty. They have limited seating. For a Minneapolis Poke style place, I've been disappointed many times for price, quality as well as quantities. This new edition of Poke is decently price for anyone with a budget as well as getting the full quality poke needs if you get cravings like me! They have a good variety of choices for you that are pre-made if you're unsure what to get for meals or food. I do recommend to you to create your own bowl so that you can get everything you want! When you create your own there are tiers with either small, medium or large. For me the medium was perfect because you pick two protein types to go into your bowl. As they walk you through it, you pretty much see your bowl start to grow! There's so much toppings and fillings to add that soon you'll feel the bowl become overwhelming. I pretty much split my bowl into two meals since I couldn't finish it in one sitting. The quality of the food was fresh, flavorful and definitely will have me coming back! I love Poke bowls, but this is one of my favorite places in MN. They have a wide selection and everything is so fresh! I usually create my own with white rice. Toppings I pick seaweed salad, masago, mango, pickled radish, and edamame. My 2 proteins are ahi tuna and spicy salmon. Mixed with cilantro, scallion, yuzu citrus sauce, furikake, and tempura crispy! It's so good! If you're not feeling up to picking everything, they have delicious signature bowls as well! And if you're not feeling a poke bowl, they have rice bowls will your choice of eel, chicken, gyudon, steak, chicken, etc. And if you're still not feeling that, how about ramen?? read more

Yay! A poke place in Edina!! And it's delicious! I tried the poke bowl and have plenty of good things to say. They have a good variety of options for bases, sauces, proteins and toppings. They were really nice and let us sample the different sauces before choosing which one we wanted for our bowl. The bowls are well portioned and the small was plenty for a meal. Each bowl also came with a small coconut pudding which was a perfect sweet treat at the end of the meal. Ingredients were fresh and they put a good amount of toppings on the bowls. There wasn't an upcharge for avocado which you might find at some places. The one thing I would change is the amount of sauce on the bowl. Once you choose the sauce they mix that in with your protein, but that's it. I would have liked some sauce drizzled over the top of the whole bowl. I felt the bowl was a little bland without more of the sauce for flavor. The space is nice and cleans with some decent seating options. JJs is my new go-to for a healthy option when I'm looking for a quick dinner. Next time I will just ask for a little more sauce. read more

As an LA native there's a few constants in the coastal food scene: the ability to get a kombucha anywhere and a Poke place within chopstick throwing distance. Highly skeptical of any raw fish offerings in MN my cravings nonetheless took me to JJ's Poke again and again. As I am now nearly through their entire menu, I can definitely say this is probably the best Poke in the Twin Cities. My favorites are definitely the Rainbow Bowl but I enjoyed Chasu and even Guydon bowls as well. If you are ordering delivery I would say some of the sides and appetizers don't travel too well such as the Takoyaki. So a friend pointed out to me that my Yelp reviews tend to be on the critical side and I've been trying to make a conscious effort to be more positive...if it's appropriate. I was thinking about this today because I just posted another "critical" review earlier. Fortunately, I happened to stumble across JJ's when I was running errands in Edina. So here's me stocking up on some Yelp goodwill. I actually tend to think mainland poke is overrated. It's like, the more expensive, trendy sister to the already trendy sushi in America. I mean, poke in Hawaii makes sense. But mainland...it's always so much more expensive than it's worth. BUT JJ's seems to know this too! So they end up giving you a GREAT deal on the food you get. The mix-ins for their poke bowls are so solid. The fish is fresh enough for its purpose. My only complaint is that JJ's is in Edina. Why can't they also be downtown? In all fairness, I must begin this review with a caveat, which is that I am comparing JJ'S to other local establishments, and not costal poke joints. That being said, best poke I've had in MN. Poke, and sushi for that matter, begins with the quality, consistency and flavor of the rice, and JJ's does a good job. Perfectly cooked, right amount of stickiness and subtle flavoring. Perfect base for my bowl. The way to go, in my opinion, is the medium bowl, +/- another scoop of fish for $2 extra. The thing I love about JJ's is that they don't nickel and dime you about the toppings. You choose any 5 of their fresh or pickled veggies, various salads (seaweed, crab or squid), then add fish, sauce and crunchies, all for the same price. You can walk out with two meals for $20 and trust me that a medium is a good amount of food, I've not left hungry. The quality of the fish is good, but don't expect the variety you may find on the coast. The ahi is a must have for me, the salmon is very good and I replay like their spicy tartare-esque offerings. This is where I may add a scoop. Pile on the crunchies, including sesame seeds, nori flakes, fried onions or tempura. I like a little spicy mayo for added kick and creaminess. We come here more than I'd like to admit but they have a rewards program as well so you will get money off your next visit, and coupons are frequently found in the mail. If you like sushi and you are in the area, I think you will satisfy that craving at JJ's. Not to mention that a bowl has more fish and is less than you would pay for one sushi roll elsewhere. read more

Too busy eating and feeling clever for having eaten ;-) I ask them for half the rice, just to keep the carbs down. It's top rate sushi rice - best in town. Then I load up the tuna, mango, pineapple, ginger, pickled radish, a little more mango and pineapple, ANY of their sauces, and some sort of crunch depending on mood. If you like your a bit less fruity, or like to experiment, my combo doesn't come close to using the huge list of ingredients available. Clearly, I'm a fan of the build-your-own option. If you prefer less work, they have several more mundane bowls you can simply choose and enjoy. There's a lot of new flavors to be created. First, choosing the rice, there's white or brown rice. Lots of proteins to be mixed. The raw fish looked super fresh. Next, there's a lot of interesting sauces to taste. My favorite is the sesame cream to keep the favors low key. When creating a bowl there are 12 different toppings to choose from where you can pick 5. A lot of unique favors! Despite the poké trend being a couple months ago, it's finally steamrolling in the Twin Cities. As more and more stores pop up, competition is inevitable. In order to shine amongst competition, these poké stores need to be unique. Perhaps through ingredients, flavors, and affordability. JJ's does just that. The drive is a bit further than your usual spots in downtown Minneapolis, but it's definitely worth it! It's the same size as your typical poké shop - small, clean, and modern. The ordering menu is clearly labeled, indicating how many scoops of proteins and toppings you're allotted. Meals come in three different sizes: small - one scoop, medium - two scoops, and large - four scoops. If you're not feeling the poké bowl, you have the usual options of sushi burrito, rice bowl, and salad. JJ's menu is extensive, offering proteins not seen at other stores (e.g. scallop and yellowtail) alongside fresh and well-kept toppings like mango! Unlike other places that have their avocadoes pre-cubed and prone to browning, JJ's doesn't prepare it until you order. They actually scoop out a third to half an avocado. The stand-out quality that sets JJ's apart from The Cove, Sotarol or Fishbowl Poke is their sauce. There's so many different options and dressings not seen elsewhere. The possibilities are essentially endless and tasty. I personally like the wasabi mayo. All in all - if you're willing to make the drive, do try JJ's. Service is friendly and they repeat your orders just in case. The private parking is always a plus opposed to parallel and metered parking.
