It's been at least 5 years since I've been here but was craving a poke bowl and was around the Southdale area. This place continues to serve fresh quality food at an affordable price. I was impressed with their updated (since I had last gone in 2020) way of ordering food, you take a slip of paper and mark down how you want to customize your poke bowl. Gone are the days of long lines of people who don't know exactly what they want and allows people to order their food at their own pace. Once I submitted my slip, I had my food prepared in under 10 minutes (5 other people were ahead of me). The dining room is very simple, they have a few tables with benches and the lighting is bright. Wow this is a hidden gem! We've come in a couple times recently and have been blown away with the quality (and bang for your buck) Even the small size bowls are extremely filling with freshly prepared ingredients, so we leave with leftovers for later. I love the customizable build your own option and was surprised at how many toppings you're encouraged to choose that are included in the price! The chicken karaage is my husband's favorite (he said JJ's is superior to even the higher-end Japanese places in the twin cities) and I love the vege bun which is only $4.50! Tons of free off street parking here in the lot, and the place is always very clean and tidy -- the chairs are also super comfortable. Service is quick and polite. A nice bag goes a long way. I got a reusable bag with my Bento box order yesterday. That alone is worth a star. The bento box had my meal (sashimi over rice) grilled veggies, an appitizer, small dessert. Everything was good except for the tuna which was tough. the veggie tempura stayed crispy as I drove to work and the dessert was delicious and probably actually the portion size I should be eating. I have order fromt this location many times but it's the first time of going to the location instead of delivery. the chairs were comfy and the clean and tidy. I thought I'd give this food a try as I've been into Tuna Poke lately but this was just meh. "Poke" means chunk and I really wasn't expecting my tuna to be scoops of mince with the texture of pablum. The online menu is quite confusing as well, but I'm still not regularly dining in so I don't have the opportunity to ask questions. For example, I chose the large build-my-own poke; then you select protein, add-ins, etc. but each item has a +$3 or +$1 next to it - making me think I was building a super-pricey lunch - but the $19 price did not change when I went to check out. I did like the Hawaiian sauce dressing. And if you add pickled ginger you'll get A LOT of ginger! Spring rolls are a favorite of mine but I wish the menu specified they were fried and not fresh. My mission to find my favorite poke in the Twin Cities continues! I was in the area, and have been meaning to try JJs. Located at the end of a strip mall shared with Cub, this is a fast casual spot to grab a poke bowl. They seem to do a lot of pickup and takeout orders, but so have a few booths if you want to dine in! Their menu includes poke - build your own or signature bowls - rice bowls, apps, and even ramen! Prices were standard, at $11-$14 per bowl. I ordered for takeout at the front counter and my order was ready in just a few minutes even though it was dinner rush and they were busy with online orders. Great service! I got the crunchy bowl and was pleasantly surprised by all the mix-ins! As a sauce gal I was glad they didn't skimp at all - dare I say a touch too much sauce? Either way, I ate it all happily! Even though, they were very friendly and moving urgently to get the orders fulfilled. It looked like no indoor seating and the other people there were also waiting for their takeout. First time having poke in MN and it was good. I was a bit thrown off by the weird staff though. They didn't say hi, they didn't ask if I had any questions. When I went up to order, halfway through my order the worker told me I'd have to fill out my order on the sheet. Wish this was conveyed to me before? As I am filling it out, the worker left. My poke bowl was seasoned tuna, spicy mayo, avocado, masago, tempura, scallion, pineapple, and white rice. It was quite good. I also tried both the gyoza and pork bun. They were both SUPER good. I tried a create your own ahi tuna bowl and added lots of great toppings! The only topping I wouldn't recommend would be the "avocado" - which is basically weird tasting creamy guacamole. You also get a very very small scoop of tuna, but I guess that's what a small size gets you. You do the Hokey Poke!! I honestly cannot get enough of poke bowls. I have tried numerous places around the Twin Cities. I stumbled upon this place after having a horrible dinner at the cheesecake factory across the street. Sent my food back and I was still horribly hungry after a 12 person friends dinner at CC factory. I pulled up my Yelp app and typed in "poke" AH Ha a "hot and new" Poke restaurant was right across the street. Thanks yelp app. It just happened to be their grand opening. The staff working was super helpful and the food seemed very authentic. I ended up ordering their signature mango Hawaii bowl sans cucumber. It was amazing the portion was huge at only $9.95. Definitely preferred over The Cove, which I found inauthentic though my Irishman was a fan. Lovely bright, casual decor punctuated by a large, bold canvas of seafood art immediately captures the attention upon entering the space - or maybe that was because we both made beelines to the restrooms first? The service counter is busy at 6 pm this Thursday evening, with the phone ringing every few minutes with new orders from hungry diners looking to pick up, and Bite Squad team members in bright kelly green polo shirts take turns sitting at a tall corner table waiting as two JJ teammates prep online order after online order from a mounted tablet. Our turn comes up, and we opt to share a large 4-scoop poke bowl of albacore and shrimp for my Irishman and salmon and half/half yellowtail and scallop for me. Half/half isn't standard, but I'm glad for the exception so I was able to try all my favorites on my first visit - yay, thank you! They were either out of albacore or no longer offered it - no display or mention was made of it at the counter - so he opted for ahi instead. Even though we were sharing a single order, our server was so generous as to offer us two separate mango pudding cups to enjoy. The avocado was whipped, which disappointed us as we both enjoy taking bites of the creamy fruit. The yellowtail and scallop was dry compared to what I typically expect of the flesh in sushi and poke preparations, which I had noted visually upon ordering but wanted to try it at this new place anyway. The ahi and salmon were moist and delightful, and the toppings were plentiful, though the edamame was a bit discolored. Notably, as of January 2019 anyway, JJ's doesn't upcharge for brown rice or avocado, which all poke bowl lovers know are both often incur extra charges. Between that difference and JJ's 4-scoop bowl offering at $13.95 that easily feeds two ravenous adults (as in it's 6 pm and my 6-foot-tall Irishman hadn't eaten yet after being awake for work at 6:30 am), this place isn't just good healthy eats, it's an easy choice for regular date night rotation that's easy on the budget as well. The service has been lauded as being exceptional here, and I can definitely vouch for that. Our server, despite juggling a stream of online orders and pausing every now and again to answer yet another hungry phone call, was always pleasant and never made anyone feel rushed. Rather, he took his time with each walk-in visitor, explaining curious ingredients and offering tastings of proteins and sauces to indecisive diners - lovely background noise as we nommed away. He even exclaimed that my number was a San Francisco one when we joined the loyalty program with it, beaming as he shared that his wife was from San Francisco, so he knew the area code. Cute! While I'm still searching for a poke spot to oust my Chicago fave that I still have cravings for - I've got my eye on Hawaii Street Food next - this place is on my list of regular visits in the meantime for sure. As a branding and marketing professional, though, I would really love to see the JJ's Poke logo redesigned. It does absolutely zero in presenting the brand identity or store concept to the audience or complimenting let alone matching the brand personality upon entering the establishment. And it didn't disappoint! we arrived with quite a long line ahead of us, we got discouraged at first and even thought that they are only catering take-out (to go) orders. So when we learned we can dine in, then it was a total relief.. The place is small, we were dining with people all around us waiting for their orders and I think it's all worth it. They served the ramen with the soup in a separate container, which in a way worked for us. My son ordered their poke and you need to fill up the form found up front to check the toppings or fillings and sauce that you want in your poke. There's two JJ's Poke locations - not really sure if they're a franchise or owned by the same people, but the Edina location is the BEST one. Ordering from here is super simple: grab a pen and paper from the tables to choose what you want on your poke bowl and then pay for your order when you're done! They have pre-made bowls that you can order or you can build your own. I like to build my own! I love that they give you a lot of toppings and protein. A medium bowl is very filling! I always have leftovers for dinner. They also do have other food here like ramen or dumplings. I haven't tried anything else so I can't say if it's good or not, but I highly recommend the poke bowls! First time here. I did create your own like I've done at Hawaii Poke Bowls. Things I like better: price is $9.95 for 2 scoops of protein. $1.00 cheaper than said above. Seaweed Salad, avocado and crab salad count as a topping and aren't extra. Cons: can only pick 5 toppings, scallops the size of dimes. I don't get the choose mix in of : scallion, cilantro, Jalopeno or red onion. Would have rather had picked ginger. There is only one poke sauce and they add at the end. So things are a little different. The taste was really good and better value. They also have appetizers, rice bowls and ramen here. I was in the area anyway. I've been working 3 miles away from this place for 5 years, I don't know how long it's been there but I wish I would have found it way sooner!! I ordered double because usually the pork pieces aren't that big but these were huge! Nice thick slices and the fat just melted. Perfectly charred and not burned. The broth was fatty, flavorful and not too salty (even for a ramen broth). Portions of all the ingredients was spot on. They only give you a half of a soft boiled egg. It's common to get a whole egg split but not a deal breaker. Noodles were great too! Poke options looked great as well so I will have to go back and give that a try. Went here with 6 of my co workers for lunch and I'm not a big Poke fan so went with there ramen selection. Half of us ordered the kimchi Ramen and by the time we got it 25 minutes later, everyone who got the Poke Bowl was done. Everyone who got the Poke Bowls had good things to say. However for us who got the Ramen, wouldn't recommend or come back for it again. Everyone's meat was over cooked and dried, super tough, and mine in particular tasted chard/burnt. The ramen noodles were nothing special either and really just not a lot of flavor anywhere in the soup. Only thing that had some good flavor was the couple pieces of kimchi.
