Sunday Funday as we are getting some sunshine from all the rains all week and went to Jimmy Hulas and wow there was a live band as well! Good vibes indeed. Food was really good. Outdoor patio was perfect with a waterfront breeze. The only thing I would improve was the payment. The credit card tip was not working properly. The customer button would not work to adjust the % of tip with the only options 18/22/25. It's hard to give those tips when they don't have dedicated servers rather than order at the counter. read more

This was our first visit to Jimmy Hula's so I was interested in seeing the operation and of course experiencing the food - having read nothing about this brand I was a little surprised with the order at the counter service but they executed this perfectly. They provide you with a table number and your non-alcoholic beverages when you pay and before you seat yourself and they deliver your food tableside. We ordered a number of things from the large menu, all the selections come with a detailed description and they have no issue making your dish your way. If I had to spotlight excellence it would be the staff here, everyone here works as a team and provided our group exceptional service, this crew couldn't have done a better job and they are so friendly so please reward their efforts when you cash out. I had a customized version of the double barrel bowl minus the guacamole and crema, this is a very big portion - white rice and black bean, dressed slaw and loads of fried shrimp delicious and so much food - we also ordered a few burgers and chicken sandwiches which all seemed to be a hit and one giant order of load nachos, again a very large portion and plenty to share, The restaurant itself was very clean and incorporates an open design with a few tables on the interior along with a full bar, the exterior offers a few narrow counters with stools to dine and a large open patio area with a view of the river and marinas. Missing the Jimmy Hulas in Jax Beach the St Augustine location had been on my radar for a while. I did stop in last week while working in St Aug but they had just received 2 large tour buses. I opted to it back on the list. I sat at the bar at shift change and was told that the day replacement was on her way in. While waiting I sipped on a beer. In no time at all I was greeted by CoCo the bartender. She seems to be a very popular celebrity at Jimmy Hulas. I ordered 2 tacos and guacamole. In no time my basket arrived. Jimmy Hula's has been in the area a year and I just haven't stopped in - I had looked up the menu online but just couldn't figure out the vibe: was it sit-down? Counter service? It looked busy the times I drove by, but usually I was en route to something else and couldn't take a moment to figure it out. Finally, after getting an oil change, we made the move. And I'm mad it took so long. First of all, the location is gorgeous. Yes, it's on US1, between an oil change shop and another industrial building, but the restaurant is on the water, with such a gorgeous and mostly unobstructed view. You don't even see the highway or other places. There is a huge patio and indoor/outdoor bar. My favorite. Turns out that this is a counter service restaurant, so you order at the register and staff brings your food to the table of your choice. When the manager heard that it was our first time, he came to us to break down the menu. He suggested we start with the sauces, and choose flavor profiles based on that. Everything is suggested to be served as-is, and if you're not sure of a sauce, to get it on the side. As a condiment lover, he was speaking my language. The menu breaks down further into ridiculously delicious sounding tacos, burgers, burritos/bowls/salads, some appetizers, a whole selection of fries, and a special section of three items that are only served at the St. Augustine Store, "for locals only." I loved that. After a few minutes, my husband ordered a Jimichurri bowl with chicken, rice, chimichurri sauce and some veggies. I went the taco route and ordered two: the tree-hugger, stuffed with grilled veggies, cotija cheese and crema, and the Epic, with blackened fish, cheese, island slaw and pico. Normally, I would have just had chips with the meal, but I was starving and upgraded to fries with Voodoo sauce. The tacos were LOADED with fillings, and the fries were hot and crisp. I had passed by this place numerous times while going to St. Augustine but had never tried it. Today I wanted to eat outside somewhere before the Hurricane arrives so I gave it a try. I am so glad I did because it was delicious. They have about fifteen different tacos all with very clever names. The cashier, SpongeBob, suggested the Wipeout and the Kingston tacos. The Wipeout had marinated steak, shrimp, fries, cheddar cheese and some delicious sauce. The Kingston had blackened chicken, avocado, cheddar cheese and sauce. Both tasted great. They come with tortilla chips and salsa but you can upgrade to queso or quacolole. The restaurant has indoor, bar or outdoor seating. I opted for the outdoor seating on this beautiful day. The vibe is casual and cool, with a lot of surfboards and beach decor. The menu also has salads, bowls, burgers, sandwiches and burritos. I will definitely be back. read more

Do not let the decor and aesthetics full you nor the counter service that seems to appear to be a quick way to get your food. Party of 2 arrived on a Sunday afternoon at 4:30 after 30 minutes my husband's burger was not ready still. I ordered a Baja bowl I got my mail within 15 minutes but I was done with my food before my husbands even arrived. The person who brought it to our table says it's their policy to bring the food out as it's ready. It is ridiculously rude to bring people out their food when the rest of their party has not even gotten their food yet. This place was maybe 15% fall and to wait this long for food is ludicrous when they had six people working in the kitchen and four people standing at the counter. We are locals and this is our first time here in this is a shame because it's not too far from our house the Baja bowl was very good but with this type of service we will not be back. I finally 32 minutes after he placed the order the manager came to the counter and spoke to my husband who was livid that he been waiting that long for a regular burger order. At 35 min the manager came out and apologized and said the food should be out in 6-8 minutes. When my food was brought the staff person said I will check on your briefer and never came back. The manager came out and apologized and refunded our money. My hair and still had no burger and was starving. The manager claimed he had a shift change and new staff every week so he is struggling. Plus his order are 70% burgers and they got behind. 100% lack of communication. They knew they were backed up on burgers when the order was taken. He closed by saying he expects all new staff next week too-all joking aside. Clearly there is no bell going off when the order doesn't meet his model of 6-8 min for a burger. We left and my husbands burger was not even close to being ready at time count 40 minutes. read more

One of the new places in St Augustine- late lunch early dinner on Wednesday (here at 3 pm). I had their Kahuna burger (double) added fries and drink. Burger was prepared perfectly. Nice juicy burger. Fries good could have been hotter. Wife had a Baja taco (fish) and a Luau taco (chicken) added a drink and chips with guacamole. The teriyaki was a bit over powering. Both had pineapple mango pico but didn't get much of a taste. Interesting location on the water overlooking st Augustine (in the distance). Nice outside patio- but a bit hot today. My bill with tip was $33.62. Service good - friendly staff. When you enter you order at the register- pick up your drink and head to your table - they bring out your food. The outside patio is nice and overlooks the river. We tried tacos today and they were pretty good. These aren't authentic taco, but Americanized tacos with interesting toppings. Shrimp was good just steak was overcooked & I had a piece that was so hard couldn't even chew it, had to put in back in my "plate". Falvor was decent but definitely could have had more sauce cause it was alittle dry. Husband said the burger was good. So not great nor bad. Cajun fries were the beat thing ordered by far. Not ready to try a new place when this one is so good! I have always loved Jimmy Hulas and was disappointed when they closed near me in Jax. So I was so excited when one was announced to open here in St. Augustine!! My first visit to this location did not disappoint. When you first arrived you are greeted by either the owner or manager who makes sure you are comfortable with how it works. You order at the counter, then sit, where someone will bring you your food. I got the chicken teriyaki bowl, which has always been my favorite. The bowl was bigger than I could finish. I loved the outside seating on the water. There were fans outside with a nice breeze. I loved how the inside opens to the outside with the bar in the middle. They also have a beer my husband and I just discovered- Mango Cart. They have it on draft and is an absolute delicious beer! I am so excited to go back! read more
