I was recommended to Jay Movers by a friend who has used them more than once. I had hired The Professionals, which I had used in November of 2009, and LOVED, but, because Jay Movers was less expensive and my friend highly recommended them, I canceled my reservation with The Professionals and made one with Jay Movers.
They quoted me $88 an hour for three movers and a truck to move from Elmhurst to Chicago, an 18 mile trip, and a flat fee of $88. I specifically called them after I received the quote and was told the $88 was a flat fee that covered travel time from outside city limits. I specifically asked if it was a one-time charge or an hourly fee and was told it was a one-time charge for an estimated one hour of travel time from Elmhurst to Chicago. I also specifically requested that they set up my bed during the move and was told that it was included in the price quote.
All of my belongings were already packed into a storage unit, couch was wrapped, mattress was wrapped, etc (i.e. everything was ready to move). They said moving would begin at 9am and it did. Initially, I was happy with them, no complaints. They spoke little English, so it was difficult to communicate. There was one extra stop three blocks from the storage unit to pick up a dining set, a cabinet, and a small patio set. The movers and I left that location at the same time to head to my new apartment in Ravenswood. I arrived at the apartment in 20 minutes. The movers arrived 40 minutes after I did. I cannot understand why it took them a full hour to travel when it only took me 20 minutes. Because I am a trusting person, I assumed they had to take a different route or something to that effect, so I waited to call them. Finally, when it was approaching an hour, I called, and they said they were one block away. Who knows what they were doing (eating lunch?) during that extra time that I had to wait for them to arrive, but I let it go.
I got the feeling that they were milking the time and purposefully going slow to run up the moving bill. I went to the truck to direct the movers (did I say how difficult it was to communicate with them?) and caught the foreman peeing in between the dumpsters in my alley. Not cool. Downright disgusting, actually, especially when I'm moving into a new building and would like to make a good first impression on my neighbors! Clearly, Jay Movers needs a policy on bathroom protocol. Again, I let it go.
They loaded my grandmother's mid-century ceramic floor vase into their truck without wrapping it in a blanket and it broke. Somehow, it arrived in my apartment with tape around the base where it cracked, and I was horrified that they tried to cover it up in such a way. Obviously, there is nothing I can do about this as it was an irreplaceable item with sentimental value.
When it came time to pay them, I was told the charge for travel was more than the quoted $88 and they also had not set up my bed. When asked to do so, they said they hadn't brought any tools. I called Aaron at Jay Movers and informed him about the extra charge, the vase, and the fact that the movers did not bring tools. He admitted that bed setup is included but had no explanation for anything else. What kind of movers do not carry tools with them? What if I had things that needed to be disassembled at location A? Aaron was no help at all and basically gave me the phone call equivalent of a shoulder shrug. I stated, "I guess there's nothing that can be done about this, then." To which, Aaron replied, "nope." Not "no, I'm sorry," or "I apologize that you've had a bad experience," just, "nope." I informed him that I would not use Jay Movers again, and would instead always go with The Professionals. He must not have cared because he didn't say anything. Zero customer service skills.
After unpacking, I realized I am missing the base to my patio table and shelves to one of my bookcases. After putting in a call the day after my move (May 4th) to see if they were still on the truck, they said they'd check and call back. Still no call as of today (May 9th).
