I moved from my one-bedroom apartment into my boyfriend's two-bedroom condo a couple miles away last month. I contacted Jay's movers via email and received an email quote within several hours and a phone call the next day. They had availability for my move (a weekday afternoon at 1pm) with about 10 days notice and gave me their quote. A representative from Jay's contacted me the day before to confirm my appointment and allowed me to provide a second contact phone number for the day of the move. On the move day, I received a phone call from the movers (Lalo, Ricardo, Jaime) around 12:30 that they had already arrived - early! Although my building would not let me move out unti the 1pm window due to condo regulations (security staff and elevator setup were not ready), it was nice knowing the crew was ready. They began at 1pm sharp and the charges did not begin until that time. The guys were friendly and professional and did a great job moving me out of my unit and into the condo and some items into a separate storage unit. Even though I was a bit disorganized and didn't have them load the first stop's goods at the front of the truck, they were able to adjust. Even with the two stops and wrapping up some of my furniture for storage, they completed the move in about 2.5 hours and the final amount came out under $300, which is what I was quoted. I have several boxes in storage that I have not opened, but everything I have checked thus far is in perfect condition. Seriously, my experience was so stress free with Jay Movers it was unbelievable. I was able to set up a move only about 2 weeks ahead of time. They were very friendly on the phone and even called to confirm a week out and again the day before. Our moving crew got there RIGHT on time, and were so incredibly fast. The three man crew moved my furniture down 4 flights of stairs, my roommates stuff out of her apartment, and ALL our stuff into a second floor apartment in under 2 hours. There is a 2.5 hour minimum which the crew kept apologizing for because they only worked 2 hours, but it was SO WORTH IT. The crew couldn't have been nicer, faster, or friendlier. The whole experience of moving was stressing me out big time beforehand, but clearly I had nothing to worry about. I couldn't recommend them highly enough. read more

DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY. THEY STOLE A BOX OF OUR BELONGINGS AND $350 IN CASH. I have never written a review on Yelp, but feel so strongly about Jay Movers that I signed up to warn potential customers about them. We hired Jay Movers upon the recommendation of a friend. Because they were recommended, we didn't check their Yelp reviews, or any other reviews available online. If we had, we would have seen that Jay Movers had a history of theft. On the day of the move, things went smoothly. They milked the time on the 2 miles between our old apartment and our new one, weaving through downtown, "lost." After all of our things were moved in, the movers gave us a sob story of hardship, pressuring us to give them a hefty tip in cash. A week or so after the move, we noticed a box missing (it contained decently expensive knives we had received as a gift, as well as other valuables). We also noticed a large quantity of cash missing. Once we had ascertained that the box and cash were, in fact, missing, we called Jay Movers management. After avoiding our follow-up phone calls for weeks, the owner, Jay, rudely told us that he would compensate our box for 30 cents per pound, and refused to consider any other sort of compensation for the missing items. He essentially admitted that his movers stole, and that 30 cents per pound was their compensation policy. When we asked for a partial or full refund for the move, he yelled, "I'll see you in court," and hung up on my fiance. I've filed a report with the Better Business Bureau, the American Moving and Storage Association, and the Department of Transportation. PLEASE DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY. If there is a problem, they are not willing to take responsibility for their people. Honestly, I don't want them inside any more homes. KEEP YOUR BELONGINGS SAFE. Hire a different company. read more

This moving company is great. After calling several moving companies for quotes for my move to Ohio from Columbus, Jay Movers was considerably less expensive than other companies. They arrived promptly at 8:00 am, put shrink-wrap and blankets around all my furniture, and finished loading my 3-bedroom condo by 1:00. The movers were very courteous and the owner even stopped by to see how everything was going. The next day, Lalo, Juan, and Andros arrived in Ohio with my stuff and even called me a few times to tell me when they would be arriving. They did a great job unloading and paid special attention to the boxes that I marked fragile. I highly recommend Jay Movers for your next move. Since I had never hired a moving company, my daughter recommended that I look on Yelp.com for moving company reviews. Based on the reviews, I decided to contact Jay Movers. So happy I did. The moving rate: one moving van, three men, $88 per job hour, plus a one hour travel time charge of $88. Estimated our move would take 2.5 hours. I received a call two days prior of our move to confirm our move date and time. Our move was scheduled to begin on a Saturday at noon. Lalo called and said they finished the previous job early and wanted to know if they could start earlier. This was a plus for us. The team arrived at the storage unit before 11:30am. Lalo went over the paper work/charges and there were no surprises. The team started working immediately. At the house, I stayed outside by the truck and instructed which room each box, appliance, and furniture piece was to go. My friend directed traffic inside our home. All three men were pleasant and easy to work with, everything ended up where it was supposed to be, and nothing was broken. The move from our 10x30 storage unit into our 5 bedroom Cape Cod home was completed by 2:00pm (2.5 hours as quoted.) My friends and family were then on hand to help unpack and set-up the essentials. The day was MUCH shorter and less stressful than it would have been if we had not hired Jay Movers. Highly recommend Jay Movers to anyone looking for a moving company. Ask for LALO, ANDRES, and ALFONSO for your move. They also gave us a great deal on furniture wrapping and the total with tip was exactly what we anticipated. After some 22 moves in Chicago of various types i.e. high rise apartments/condos, storage lockers, office relocation etc. I was really dreading this particular move. Picking, up furniture from 2 separate locations in the Loop, one a storage locker I hadn't seen in years(never good). My favorite stall tactic is to spend as much time as possible reading reviews before I finally have to make a decision. So these Jay Mover guys have a lot of good reviews that aren't obviously written by them as most others do. I call, I explain what I need and that I sort of need this done 2 days from now and I can only give them a 1 1/2 hour window for the first stop, then cut the lock off of Pandoras box at the storage place, then drive it all to a tiny garage in Indiana and unload it. It took about 5 minutes for Abraham to give me a price, confirm my times and addresses, take down my payment info(they only require a small deposit up front and they didn't store the info). I was unable to be at any of the locations(usually not good). They showed up 20 minutes early, moved large and fragile furniture in 20 minutes, called me to report in and headed to storage locker, called me in like 30 minutes to say they were done and heading to Indiana. Really? Something has got to go wrong eventually, but IT DIDN"T!!!!! They got to IN, unloaded and even placed a sofa and bookshelf in the house, then called with the final price which was very reasonable, less than they quoted, and much less than what I had read on other sites. I recently used Jay Movers to move my one bedroom apartment from the Gold Coast, out to Lakeview East. The company had sent me Adam's crew. They were on time, super nice, and fast! It only took a little over 3 hours to move my things, and this includes time spent removing the feet on my couch, which initially, didn't fit through my door. I had nightmares about this happening, but the guys were awesome, and they got my big and bulky couch through my new door in no time. The price was great too! I'm kind of torn on this star rating, and I can't say that our move went as smoothly as we'd hoped. But the fact of the matter is that Jose M and his team worked really, really hard and despite the fact that they were given incorrect information (from the Jay Movers employee who came to our apartment to do an on-site estimate) about how much stuff we had, they promised that they would do a good job for us and they absolutely delivered on that promise. They moved everything quickly and without complaint (we have a lot of books and were moving into a third floor walk-up) and could not have been more professional or pleasant. The experience I had with the movers themselves was five-star service without a doubt, but the people in the office could use some work. They sent someone out to look at our place to give an on-site estimate and he told us that it could be done by 4 guys in 7 hours. Then when the movers showed up and saw how much stuff we actually had, the company wanted to send out a 5th guy and charge us an extra $25/hour for him. I refused, stating that their employee had quoted us for 4 movers and that if they wanted to bring in a 5th person, that would be on them, not me. The owner, Jay himself, came out to look at our apartment and kept saying, "You have a lot of stuff" like it was our fault that the on-site estimate wasn't done correctly. Yeah, we do have a lot. But no more than when your employee came out to look at it in the first place. It made for a very stressful and frustrating experience, but Jose and his team made up for it with their great attitudes and fast pace. They ended up getting everything moved in less than 7 hours, which was a blessing and saved us money. I would probably use Jay Movers again but I hope that next time, the office staff has gotten their act together. read more

Well everything started off great. Competitive price, showed up on time, and pretty nice guys. After the initial impression, it all went downhill. The main guy pulled me aside before they even started working and recommended that we tip each guy of a three man team about $60-100. That is absurd for a one bedroom apartment move that only took 3 hours. Two of the guys taking things down to the truck were loading their dollys up way too high and didn't seem to have too much concern for other people walking around our condo building. When they got down to the truck with the first load a box fell off the top of a huge load. We had wine glasses and other nice kitchen platters in there which all broke. At the end of the move I brought this up to the main guy and he said not a problem, that HQ will reimburse us if we just send them pictures. Fast forward 3 months and I never got a penny back from Jay Movers. Spoke to multiple people on the phone who ensured me the check would be arriving soon. They never responded to a single email and when I filed a BBB complaint they didn't even respond to that. What a joke of a company, stay away at all costs! read more

No complaints. After redoing floors in a new house in high humidity we had to push back our move date at the last minute. The movers we had couldnt accomodate us but Jay Movers did. The 4 guys came 1/2 early and worked (minus 1/2 lunch and travel time) non stop in heat and high humidity for 9 hours. We moved from a 2nd floor into a 2 story house so they were up and down with huge heavy boxes full of books. Referred for the 1st time to Jay Movers, the owner and staff responded timely, efficiently, and effectively from start to finish. Clearly, most professional, they informed all involved of the most organized way to move, noting both cost and way to save $. They verified and reconfirmed details across different media throughout the move process, including and not limited to its contents. I received calls from the owner, too, who is obviously sensitive to moving difficulties. On the day of the move, as an example, the staff arrived early; in noticing an unexpected storm, without concern they quickly to prepare paths at the same time as the manager on that particular day did a further review with the contents' walk through. Completed documentation then, later, and at the end of the move. These are a happy staff. And fast ! They would check in with questions during the move; yet, I felt so confident that it seemed best to simply be available for the time of questions rather than monitor anything they did. I learned, later, that they adjusted and / or packed while loading with free supplies to ensure the move items were secure. By the end of loading, they reconfirmed documentation again; commute; arrival information; etc. All were completed within many, many hours that I had anticipated, with no concerns .. damage ... property loss. After we were completely done, we laughed. Again, a joyful staff with a great boss. I learned that Jay Movers does this sort of thing across the States. As a result of this initial move, I will hire Jay Movers for packing, loading, and moves ... across the nation ! read more

I was referred to Jay Movers through a friend who had a good experience with the company, and that's the last positive thing I have to say. I emailed the generic email alias they have on their site and a rep got back to me a couple days later. He quoted me ~$450 and about 3 hours move time - we were moving from a fairly small 2 bedroom apt to a new unit that was 1 block away. We had to reserve elevators times in our old building and in the new building so the crew knew we were on a bit of a schedule. The men showed up 15 mins late - not a good start. We live in River North so the truck that was being used had to be of a certain size - which was clearly communicated to the sales associated, and he confirmed 3 times that they had a truck that would fulfill the size requirements, all to find out the truck they showed up with on moving day was much larger than what I had communicated. Since the truck was too large to fit in the loading doc, they ended up having to park over a block away and carry everything to/from the truck - which added on at least an additional hour to the move. During the move process several glasses, plates, shot glasses, cups, etc were broken. I would expect a few things to break during a move but we had at least 15-20 kitchen items broken. The movers blatantly disregarded the large "FRAGILE" message written on the side of several of the boxes. We literally watched them as they threw the boxes into large carts and cringed when we heard things smash. On top of the many broken kitchen items, a large dresser was absolutely destroyed. As the movers carried it in to the apartment in about 5 pieces, they had no explanation for what had happened. One man said that it may have bounced around in the truck - well then you should have secured it better. One man said that it fell a part when they tried to tilt it up on it's side - then you should have been more cautious and wrapped it better. Too many excuses. The piece of furniture had been moved at least 3 other times and didn't have a single scratch on it. The piece was valued at over $550. After some back and forth with my sales rep and the owner of Jay Movers (which took over a month), they finally agreed to pay me $40. Yes, $40... not $400... $40. My last complaint I'd like to share (although I have plenty more - such as the men taking an unexpected 40 mins to travel one block to the new place) is how long and how much the move cost. Again, we were quoted $450 + 3 hours of move time. The move ended up taking almost 8 hours and cost us $800! If you add in the additional dresser we had to buy because Jay Movers destroyed our perfectly good one, then the cost of the move ended up being close to $1,500 - over $1,000 more than we were quoted! I will never recommend Jay Movers to anyone in the future. We had a terrible experience and the least the owner could have done was replaced the broken dresser. We will be sure that none of our friends, family members, or colleagues have to go through what we went through. read more

I didn't want to write this but enough is enough! On June 28th Jay Movers moved us from the West Loop to Evanston. After several conversations trying to impress upon BK that we had an unusually large condo with lots of art and furnishings and that the 3 man team he suggested would not be adequate, I insisted on a site visit to ensure that we'd receive both an appropriate estimate and appropriate staffing. We didn't want any surprises on the day of the move - but despite our best efforts - we had plenty - and now, nearly 3 months later, the nightmare continues! Five men showed up and the pack-out of the move went well UNTIL around 2 p.m. when the crew leader and one of the guys engaged in a screaming fight on the loading dock of our building. It was heated, nasty and lengthy - so lengthy in fact that it resulted in a more than 3 hour delay! Because of this argument, the trucks drove NOT TO OUR NEW HOME BUT BACK TO THE JAY MOVERS FACILITY ON BELMONT so they could get rid of one of the fighting guys and pickup another. Long story short, they didn't arrive until nearly 6 p.m.! By 7, they'd had enough and were spent. To say the 2nd half of the move was a disaster doesn't nearly describe how awful things were. Sloppy, careless and pathetic. Our dining room, credenza, lingerie chest, walls, doorways, etc. were scraped, bashed, broken and damaged in every way possible. Despite each box and room being labeled, no one paid that any mind. Eighty percent of the boxes were stacked SIX FEET HIGH, many UPSIDE DOWN - EVEN THOSE MARKED FRAGILE ALL IN ONE ROOM. Imagine trying to unpack when you can't even get into the room!!! AND, imagine what that careless stacking of crystal and china came out looking like!!! Needless to say, we called and emailed Jay a lengthy description of our experience, complete with photos showing how things were left and of our damages. He failed to reply but eventually we got hold of him and assured us, he'd take care of things. He reimbursed us for the lost time and promised to repair things. Well, he did send a great repairman for our wood furniture who took the shattered mirrored drawer with him to fix. After several weeks, I called the repairman who informed me that Jay said the cost was to high and he'd get it done elsewhere. Now, Jay won't return my call and my dresser has a missing drawer. Jay, you guys blew it in every way possible and if you at least had the courtesy to return my calls I may have let things go - despite the totally lousy moving experience - because you seemed to want to rectify things to the best of your ability. But now I can't get a phone call back and BTW, your new receptionist needs to learn customer service phone skills. RUDE! So, in a nutshell, save yourself the aggravation and hire New City Movers. They did our previous move and were terrific and man do we regret trying another company - it's been nothing but a costly, a completely negative experience. read more

Very unethical. We had a move in August. We have bought all our own boxes, wrapping papers. We also bought some of our own tapes. There are a few items that need plastic wraps, which is provided by the mover. At the time of payment we were charged $350 for the plastic wraps. After reasoning ,the mover discussed with the manager and reduced it to $100. After the bill is settled, the manager called next day and insisted adding on $350. my credit card was extorted with another $350 in the following days without my signature or consent. I wound up paying $450 for the plastic wraps. Charging customers without clear articulations how they are being charged and without their consent is totally wrong. Management response was they never have customer credit card info on file. I suggest they do a thorough investigation - I had one charge on the day of delivery and a second charge days after delivery (no proper consent). read more

Is it possible to give a negative star rating? Where should I begin? First, the 3-man moving crew I hired was supposed to show up at 11:30am. The team finally showed up at 1:30 pm. I contacted the office when the crew was 30 minutes late only to be reassured that the team was just 5 -10 minutes away. This continued for the remaining 1.5 hours. As my reserved elevator time was quickly fading at both places I asked the office to send over additional men so I could at least try to get my things moved more quickly. The office agreed to send over another 2 people. After several calls back to the office to find out where the additional crew was I gave up. It was obvious that the office was just saying anything to get me off the phone. Needless to my elevator time ran out at both places so my movers had to wait for the elevator. When I contacted the office to let them know that I did not think that I should pay for the time the movers spent waiting for the elevator since it would not have been a problem if they had arrived on time. There was quite a bit of debate as to how much time I would be charged for. However, to make me feel better the person I made the reservation with told me that they very sorry and was going to give me 1/2 off my transportation drive time. My move was about 1 mile! Normally I would not write/publish my bad experience with a company because I know that everyone is just trying to make a living. However, after speaking with the owner of the company I realized that this really is a bad company in terms of how it treats its employees and its customers. I moved in to my apartment a year ago, and asked Jay Movers to pick up some things from my friends apartment that I was taking, then make another stop to load everything from my place, and then unload in my new place. They were wonderful! I just recently moved again from my apartment...this time I was headed out of state and had rented a U-Haul, but needed some help loading it. Jay movers to the rescue! They came out and packed the truck for us, wrapping everything carefully and loading it up. I just stepped back and stayed out of the way while they did everything. So, we were moving from a studio fourth floor walk up into a third floor elevator building. I've never hired movers before, so was a bit anxious, but I was EXTREMELY satisfied with the work Jay Movers did. Lalo's team did an excellent job. My boyfriend and I stood in awe as he and his men took box after box, furniture after furniture up and down four flights of stairs with boxes piled above their heads. It took them only 45 minutes to clear our apartment! (And yes, though we had a studio, we had alot of stuff.) My neighbors were so impressed by them that they were all hounding me for their number! It was almost like watching superheroes move. Next we got to our new apartment, and after being berated by some strange man on the street who claimed to work for the building (*Note despite this, the movers remained nothing but professional!) the guys got our stuff back into our apartment in under an hour. Since the movers were a bit late, they actually didn't charge us for wrapping our belongings so it came out to be about $300 bucks total and we tipped Lalo and his crew well for just being generally amazing. Best of all, they take credit cards which was easier for us. My boyfriend and I agreed we will NEVER move ourselves again. I would highly recommend Jay movers and Lalo's team to anyone! read more

Awful. Period. I had used Jays Movers last year when Lalo was with the company. My move then was an absolute dream! So of course I used them again this year. And they were appalling. To start with, the spiel they gave me before they started moving anything. Telling me how much was customary for a tip -- and what they believe is "customary" was insanely astronomical. There is no world in which a $25 tip PER PERSON PER HOUR is appropriate for movers! That would double the cost of the move! And yet he told me this with a straight face. Tacky, tacky, tacky! And telling us that if we ever want things moved in the future, we can contact them directly and they would do it off the books? Do your employers know you're making that offer? And then they were incredibly slow. They also don't know how to move properly. While Lalo's crew would use straps to carry multiple boxes at once, these boys would carry one item at a time. Grab a box -- take one box down. Grab a garbage can -- take it down. When I saw one guy prepare to go downstairs holding only an umbrella, I started shoving stuff into their unused hands. 1.0 star rating 10/4/2014 NOT RELIABLE--OVER 2 HOURS LATE and I had elevator time reserved. My move was scheduled for NOON and by 2pm they still had not shown up. I made multiple calls to Jay Movers while I waited and spoke to multiple people who knew about my move but could not tell me where the movers were or when they would arrive. I received no apology, no explanation, and only guarantees that were not met. Examples: 'I guarantee the movers will be there by 1.' Didn't happen. 'We'll be there in five minutes.' Didn't happen. Over 30 minutes later, 'Where are you again?' The move didn't happen. read more

I've tried many different moving companies, and Jay Movers is definitely the best! Scheduling my move with BK was a breeze. Jose, Armando, and Roberto showed up on time - bright and early. They were an amazing crew. It was one of the smoothest and quickest moves I've had. They made sure to wrap all of the furniture and took really good care of everything.
