O COFFEE, COFFEE, HOW DO I LOVE THEE?! it's a no brainer for me to make a stop when I'm in the vicinity and in need of caffeine to see Hossam and crew at Java on Ocean! It's very inviting, with all the chairs and couches...imagine the coffee shop in Friends "Central Perk", with comfy couches and ferns minus the pretentious group of posers whining incessantly about their lives! Yummy coffee, decent pastries/cookies, haven't had a sandwich, I primarily stop by just for a coffee and/or a sweet something! Also, FREE WI-FI! It can be pretty crowded at times and at others, you could shoot a cannon and not hit anyone(though REALLY who would do such a thing?) Why do youngsters insist on studying in coffee shops anyway? it's not a library or the Student U! Yeah, I was young once...2 weeks ago...hee hee, but I never did anything so dull and predictable as to block a table at Java or Starbucks for FIVE HOUR stints! Criminy!! Why not go to the new library up the street or your dorm or your mummy/daddy's...leave the coffee shop to the GRADUATED ummmkay? I give this place 2 stars (and not 1) because I loved their orange juice... but the lox bagel was the saddest excuse for a bagel that I have literally ever seen. And the main man working was not friendly at all. Go to the Java Beach on Sloat near the beach, they are SO much better. read more

Two hours of free wifi, good chai, and lots and lots of pastries, perfect bananas. Also, the weather is great on this side of town, compared to richmond or sunset, so good for sitting outside if the tables are not already taken!!!! Lots of busy bees here doing work, hw, or reading. From the moment I walked in, I thought that I had finally found my spot - ample room to study stretched from wall to wall, quaint paintings hung on the walls, soft lighting bounced from the high ceilings, and there was simply a comforting feel. However, everything changed at the counter - I ordered an iced soy mocha and what I received was literally mud in a cup. The coffee grounds were unfiltered and settled at the bottom of the drink, providing a constant burnt taste with every sip. I noticed that I had received a small cup when I thought I had been charged for the large cup, but when I asked the cashier about it, she pointed at a board away from where the soy mocha was located and claimed it was the correct price. Either she would not admit her error, or it cost more to make a drink iced. Despite my underwhelming experience, I want to like this cafe so much that I will give it a second chance. read more

I have passed by this place so many times on my way to the gym and always wanted to stop by to grab a coffee because the place looks super cute from outside. Well today I decided to bring my family on our way to home and I regret it so bad! Martha (cashier) gave us such a bad customer service! I have never been treated this bad at a restaurant before. She seemed to be pretty moody right when we got there, definitely impatient because we were taking our time to order and when I finally called her out for being so rude she didn't even apologize she even told me that I could come back when her boss was around if I had a complaint. I regret coming to this place and even bringing my family that live in San José and doesn't come to SF often. Never coming back to this place again. read more

The Decorations was good, the service was slow (I was the only one standing in line) and the food was poorly done. I ordered a bagel with ham & egg & cheese and the sandwich was full of eggshells. Great place. It does get kinda warm in the afternoon. I've been hear twice. I've ordered Iced Coffee twice and it's just so good. I add milk and sugar. I also orderer almond croissant the second time. The pricing is great, affordable. And best of all, I don't feel pressured or awkward at all when I study there. I enjoy Java, growing up across from this joint it wasn't always all that. It was always kinda grody looking but recently this place has really cleaned up their act. I really enjoyed studying here and the little bird they have in the little cage in the middle of the shop brings a some sort of vitality to the place. What I don't love are the outrageous prices. $6.00 for a large green matcha latte and a $6.00 for a large soy latte, neither were that impressive for the price especially because it was so foamy that I might as well ordered a regular size and asked for no foam. Overall good place to study if you just get a house coffee, I would not recommend getting their "speciality" drinks because its a little overpriced for what it is. read more

I think this is under common ownership with Cole Valley Cafe. The espresso and coffee tastes the same, which is to say a little bitter. And you do not want the decaf, seriously. It is awful. The decor is homey, which is cool. I think nobody should have to pay for wireless Internet access. It is every American's God-given right to get on the Internet for free. Food is ok. Staff seemed nice and friendly. Kind of a mixed bag overall. read more

I really recommend this place for anyone in the area, or for people who like local coffee shops. I used to go here a lot when I went to CCSF and found a lot of students there also. The place has a lot of random eclectic furniture which is cool, but some of it seems old and you wonder how much the chairs and couches have survived. It is a pleasant atmosphere though, quiet enough to do your homework or read, but enough noise so you don't feel as though you're in isolation. I had a chicken sandwich with avocado which I think was around $6-$7 they have a lot of desserts and snacks here too on top of the obvious coffee, and food but I think it's kind of expensive if you are on a student or low income budget. Another cool thing about this place is that there are comedy nights. I think they're free also, a way to draw people into the coffee shop and if I remember correctly I think it's on Wednesday nights. I never went because I had class, but have always wanted to. I hope they still have them! read more

Having lived relatively close by for almost 20 years now, I really, really, really wanted to like this place. The building looks great and the neighborhood desperately needs a quaint coffee hangout. Over all these years I go in periodically to see if anything has changed for the better. Nothing has changed. Coffee and food is good but outrageously over-priced. Guy is flat out rude and there is a need of ownership change. Believe me, I want to support small businesses but this guy doesn't care about his customers with his "taxi driver" attitude. I was ecstatic when the Starbucks inside Target opened so I could grab my daily coffee. He needs to go in sometime and see how to properly treat customers. overpriced. the soft drinks/juices are way overpriced. the baked goods are old. sometimes it can get a bit grundgy.... i like the atmosphere (at times). the coffee is quite expensive for what you get. the price that they sell it at, it should be organic or something. p.s. back in the day they used to have annoying birds that flew around the cafe. thank god they got rid of them. lol. suggestions: lower your prices, when baked goods are old throw them out. i love small coffee shops but i'd rather go to starbucks than here. i think there building one down the block by the way. read more

I like to support "mom & pop" businesses instead of corporations, when possible.. I am rewriting my review based upon a re-visit here and I had a good experience this time. The coffee tasted much better, the place was cleaner and the pastry was great! The prices are still slightly higher than corporate blahbucks, but running a business without corporate structure is not cheap, and it there's great admiration to stay in business in these hard times.There was a great selection of pastries here, and it just felt good. Neighbors coming in and being friendly gave a greatt atmosphere. I am grateful to have revisited. read more

Back in the days, I used to spend lots of time at City College and one of the only spots I did homework was Java on Ocean. It's definitely a cool hang out for the students on weekdays and neighborhood folk on weekends. From the outside, this place looks cool. Big windows, lots of sun and a good looking menu. Also, the coffee is not bad. It's the manager (well, and the disgusting bathroom) that make this place so un-welcoming. CHECK YOUR RECEIPT! I had an experience in which he charged my card an extra dollar without telling me about it, because he was irritated that I wasn't making the minimum purchase (even though he said it was "OK") and then, very sneekily, did not give me a receipt. When I looked at my bank statement later, he claimed he must "not have been wearing [his] glasses". Well, I've never seen this guy wear glasses, so look out! Large, light and airy interior, plenty of room with lots of couch and soft chairs along with small tables and hard seating. Service was fast and efficient. Plenty of vegan cookies to choose from including Kerri's Kreations and Sunflour Bakery selections. One star deducted for staff beginning the clean up/close down activities at 6:30 when closing time isn't until 9:00. The two stars are for the decor, because Java on Ocean is a quaint, airy coffee shop with ambient Turkish music and a live bird in the corner. A sign on the register advertised their new Mexican coffee, which I love-- who am I to pass up such a recommendation? But it tasted like spices were dumped in the cup and coffee poured on top-- definitely not the best I've had. Moreover, the toasted bagel with cream cheese was cold, and the spread unevenly distributed. All this for $8-- I could have gotten a better deal anywhere else on ocean. Coffee is subpar and overpriced. Food is good but priced for downtown, not Ocean Ave. The atmosphere is nice for lounging/studying/working. The owner is a very nice man and provides good customer service, so my complaint is likely about one of the two girls who work there... Here goes... I paid with my debit card and tipped in cash. The next day when I looked at my online statement, a tip was added to the bill... pretty shady, but I decided to let it go since it was only a couple bucks and it could have been a mistake. This coffee shop is the embodiment of that vision. I have had some of my greatest thoughts, created my most elaborate plans, had some of the greatest conversations sitting here. I was never too keen on their food selection until recently I had the chicken breast sandwich with a mocha that was AMAZING! This place is pretty chill, came here two Sundays ago to study with a friend after our cafe of choice wasn't open. I had a capp which was very good and strong! Shoot if I'm going to pay $3-4 it better keep me up all night! & it did, so I was thankful for that, though I was tossing and turning 'cause I couldn't sleep LOL too much caffeine I guess. The coffee here is just okay. I got the caffe mocha and I wish the flavor would've been stronger. It tasted slightly watered down. I wouldn't make a special trip out here just for their drinks but it's an acceptable option if you're in the area and you're desperate to get a caffeine fix. The past few times I've been here, I have always seen plenty of seating and it doesn't get very busy so it's a good place to sit and study or read a book. I haven't tried the food but it looks like they have a large variety for you to pick from. read more

This cafe is honestly the only thing I like about Ocean Ave. It's incredibly unique inside - aesthetically attractive, even has birds in cages. The music is funky but ambient. The drinks are good - the brewed coffee wasn't so good, however. Free wi-fi, lots of seating, and good food. I would come back. read more
