I probably would have given them 4 stars if it weren't for the whole "chicken breast sandwich" fiasco. So when you see "chicken breast sandwich", you expect a sandwich with a chicken breast on it, right?? Well not here, I'll tell ya. It sounds all yummy and fantastic but it's really a large roll of bread with half of a half chicken breast on it. And to make matters worse, they cut the half of the half of a chicken breast in half and then spread the pieces out along the roll to make it look like more. I know because I had a lot of down time to stand and watch, she moved so slowly. I even had enough time to go into shock (wait, is that supposed to be a chicken breast?") and denial - ("did she just cut that small piece of white meat in half??), and then finally acceptance ("I guess it's silly of me to think that "chicken breast sandwich" means a WHOLE chicken breast!") Please, please, stop misleading the customers. If you must be so skimpy just call it a chicken sandwich for gosh sakes. all in all...is all right. Many past reviewers have commented on the owner's attitude problem- I can certainly confirm this. However, what is more troubling is that the owner did not use gloves when putting together my drink, despite the fact that he had just handled the previous customer's cash. This is the coolest place ever! Singing Song Bird! Cafe Borgia! Soothing and calming background music that is not blaring like at the other corporate coffee shops! I love coming here and grabbing a Cafe Borgia. Also, a Cafe Borgia is a chocolate orange citrus flavored coffee with cream. Java on Ocean makes the best one! The Barista and the Owner are so sweet and kind. I love coming here to eat and work and get a fast gourmet level made coffee from this place more so than any where else in San Francisco. A quirky isolated cafe on the sunny side of the street. I've been going here for years, since I live in the neighborhood. I like this cafe quite a bit. The coffee is strong, and there are many options for coffee drinks and drink alternatives. I enjoy this cafe more for the ambience and sunny warmth than the food options, yet many people seem to enjoy lunch at Java on Ocean. The cafe is comfortable with a variety of couch or chair seating. There is a pet bird that sings along with the music sometimes. They could offer free wireless, yet it may be flooded with laptops from nearby ccsf or sfsu. Java on Ocean is conveniently located a block away from my friend Jonathan the Jew's house. Whenever we're sitting on his couch playing Halo 3 in the middle of the afternoon, or he's high as balls and gets the munchies, we head down to Java on Ocean for a sandwich. The sammies are pretty good here, maybe a little overpriced, but they are pretty thick with delicious veggies, so you can't really complain. This seems like a cool place to hang out if you need to do some homework and have a cup of joe, but I've never been here for longer than 15 minutes. The people who do hang out here don't seem like coffee house douchebags, which is definitely a plus. The coffee isn't spectacular spectacular, but it does the job. The best coffee house in the neighborhood! And I am a very serious coffee drinker! Coffee: Always consistently tastes great and is always hot. Food: I love the humus wrap. I can't believe I haven't wrote about this place. I've been a regular to this cafe since I moved to the area. Love the quaint and eclectic decor with huge windows that bring natural sunlight into the cafe. The tables are not too crowded with accessible outlets. The music with varied styles is soothing and doesn't overpower your focus in reading/study. **The cutest thing about this place is that they keep 2 little birds in the cages above the bookshelf, and they sometimes churn along with the music! Came here a lot when I first moved back to SF to look for a new job and stopped for a while, but now I'm back! I don't know why I stopped coming here - it's the perfect place to work, study, hang out, or just relax. Their house coffee tastes great and strong, and every time I'm here there's table space and outlets. The staff is super chill and so is the atmosphere of the place. Good selection of breakfast foods, sandwiches, pastries/sweets, granola bars, chips, juices, and lots more. Their smoothies are expensive but really quite delicious. Walgreens, a produce store, and Whole Foods are a short distance away too, for people who like to eat snacks and fruit while they study like myself. :P For anyone who drives, parking is pretty easy here. There are metered spots along the main street (Ocean Ave.), but there's also residential parking all around. Never have to park more than a block away. Public transportation is really easy too, and what I use most of the time. Not sure whether I like this cafe or Fog Lifter (couple blocks away) better - but they're both so great, you're bound to have a great study session at either! read more

I'm not sure why my original review was removed (other than it being negative), but I came in last Wednesday, and they charged me three dollars for a small, plain chocolate chip cookie. And $2.75 for a Vitamin Water. Ms. Field's cookies don't cost that much and taste much better. I could get a Cako cupcake for the same. I breathe a sigh of relief that this coffee house exists. Ocean Ave is ripe for development and this is one of the few establishments that is truly attractive and inviting. The atmosphere is very chill, casual funky decor, terrific old building. Bird chirping in a big cage. People with laptops or newspapers, always friendly-ish, and many of them gasp are talking to each other. I keep my big dog toward the front and under control and he's always been welcomed. The food is good and one $7 breakfast burrito keeps me filled until an early dinner. I'm not sure why other Yelpers have posted that the food is expensive. It's exactly the same cost as any decent coffeehouse slash chalkboard cafe in the city, and cheaper than the ones in pricier neighborhoods. If you want super cheap coffee, then go to one of those combo Chinese food and donut places and suffer the consequences. The owner is always there working -- always -- and ALWAYS has a believable pleasant smile. Which is astounding considering that he is *always* there. Sign of the economic times surely. read more

Really slow service if getting an espresso drink. About 5 people got their drop coffee immediately but I think there's only one guy that can do foamed milk and he was busy talking to someone. Like a beer garden or wine tasting, you go to coffee shops to sample the coffee (along with all the other amenities). I've tried the sandwiches and wraps here and they're all quite delicious. You can't go wrong and though the price point is a tad high, I think they are totally worth it. But I come to review one item and one item alone: the ice coffee. Phenomenal. Picture this: you first sip, the cool solution of coffee, water, milk and sugar (at least the last two I put in. To each her own!) run over your tongue cooling your senses and preping you for the flavor to come. It's not quite there yet, but the anticipation builds as the sublime flavors come into view. A warm bitterness at first but as expected from coffee, the natural charm of the roasted and ground and steeped bean. But as the bitterness passes, the roasty, smokey, and most amazing chocolaty flavor rises from the depths as if greeting the taste buds like a long lost friend. With each sip. And finally, the flavors roll away with only a mere hint of the chocolate with no horrid aftertaste that many cup's of joe are well known for. Sold I'd say. I asked the barista what composed the house coffee/ice coffee and she said that it was house blend of all the beans they had....how long did it take them to get the right blend for this most perfect flavor? I'd say that any place that takes the time to produce the most amazing flavors in the most basic of offerings at a coffee house is worth a stop, chill, and enjoyment of such refined and well worked coffee tones. read more

Java on Ocean is my favorite place to study. There is plenty of chairs and there is plenty of plugs. It is the ideal study area for those who are sick of studying at the library and at home. As for food, it is OK, it is your typical coffee shop with all of your typical coffee shop foods and drinks. I never found anything special about the actual coffee but I do enjoy it. They do have a credit card minimum so be aware of that. The place has a semi-eastern, new age feel...It is not really my type of ambiance but I usually listen to my own music anyways so it has never been a problem for me. read more

Finally i have this giant wad of lettuce wrapped in lavash with a few dry falafel. Sure would like some hummus to make this thing stick together...hmmm no hummus??!! Go in the AM, or make sure you pick a seat not in the direct sunlight. I've gone here 4 times now. -The 1st time my Americano wasn't so great. It was weak despite the fact that the cup was only 2/3 full. -The 2nd time I tried again and it was made by a different guy and it tasted great. It was about 4/5 full, which is good for half & half. -The 3rd time I had an iced coffee and it had plenty of flavor. I like a strong coffee (why I get Americanos) and this one fit the bill -The 4th time I got another Americano and it was pretty good, but not as good as the 2nd. It's possible that it might be in my head, but I'm always looking for a good bitter bite tempered by the copious amounts of half & half I put in. Anyways, I'm extremely glad to have this place literally 2 blocks from my front door (downhill on the way there too!). Music, decor, location are all good. I read a bunch of bad things about the food, but with a price point north of $5, it's out of my range anyways. A plain bagel is a bit too, toasting it is 25c extra, and butter extra, and cream cheese a bunch more extra. But I don't go to coffee shops to eat anyways. read more

Couches are kinda frumpy but this Coffee shop is by far my favorite in San Francisco. The workers are efficient without being fake and the Coffee is very good. The people here know what they're doing, point blank. And they are always stocked with the SF Chronicle, a place where I can read a hard copy of it for free. They play a lot of funky native-american/pow-wow music which might distract you if you are trying to get some studying done but I like the place. And it stays open a bit later than other coffee shops around the area. Recommend the White Chocolate Mocha, Chocolate cappuccino, and the raspberry mocha. ALL DELICIOUS! read more

Went to get some lunch with a good friend thinking the cafe looked cute and possibly in the same chain as the java beach cafe in the sunset (which we love!) but our experience was very negative. When I was waiting to order, the man behind the counter shouted at me "are you going to order or just stand there all day" I ordered a wrap and when I took the first bite I honestly wanted to throw up it was so gross. Hey you guys, I'm the friend mentioned above. All the reviews about the guy behind the counter are pretty much on par, he's a smart-ass. So they have a deli style sandwich menu right? They are not deli sandwiches, they don't have a selection of bread or cheese like you might expect. That's not the problem I have though. I ordered a sandwich and I looked, I'm honest to God not a picky guy. The thing that irritates me was that the lettuce they put in my sandwich was the same lettuce they use for their salads. That's means that my sandwich had salad dressing in it. I concluded that the workers there are lazy and mix up their ingredients when they don't feel like making stuff for particular items on the menu, that shouldn't translate to a $10 dollar sandwich. I got a bad feeling that this laziness indicates how the rest of the stuff they serve is prepared. The atmosphere is heightened by two adorable parakeets in decorated cages as well as a vibrant playlist with every genre. They have effortlessly combined Mediterranean tastes and artwork with urban couches and lighting. I highly recommend this as a space for studying since wifi is strong and electrical sockets are endless! My favorite order here is a double latte and the chicken hummus wrap with hot sauce. Also against the norm for typical cafes, the menu includes everything from Mediterranean specials, and fresh fruit smoothies, to purchasing coffee beans by the pound! I'm a new resident to the city who is discovering many things... such as, school in San Francisco is closed during the Chinese Lunar New Year. It was on this day that my boyfriend and I got up at 7 am to go to school, only to discover this fact, which made us feel like dumb white kids from Marin. Tired and out of bed early for no reason when we could have been sleeping in, we wanted to grab coffee before heading back home. Most places were closed except for Java On Ocean. Okay, I'll say this: it's expensive. I can get coffee for less than $1 at Cafe Rosso on SFSU campus. It's totally worth it to go to Java On Ocean though. Hookahs, lamps, and Morroccan style couches! A pretty little singing bird in the cage! And despite the high price, I had probably what is the most amazing soy white mocha in the world... and I don't like most white mochas (especially ones with syrup - boo Starbucks!). The windows were large and allowed to early morning sun to shine in and warm us as we comfortable sat on a couch beneath a potted tree, drank our coffee, and ate our bagels.
