I probably would have given them 4 stars if it weren't for the whole "chicken breast sandwich" fiasco. So when you see "chicken breast sandwich", you expect a sandwich with a chicken breast on it, right?? Well not here, I'll tell ya. It sounds all yummy and fantastic but it's really a large roll of bread with half of a half chicken breast on it. And to make matters worse, they cut the half of the half of a chicken breast in half and then spread the pieces out along the roll to make it look like more. I know because I had a lot of down time to stand and watch, she moved so slowly. I even had enough time to go into shock (wait, is that supposed to be a chicken breast?") and denial - ("did she just cut that small piece of white meat in half??), and then finally acceptance ("I guess it's silly of me to think that "chicken breast sandwich" means a WHOLE chicken breast!") Please, please, stop misleading the customers. If you must be so skimpy just call it a chicken sandwich for gosh sakes. all in all...is all right. Colorful, spacious, fairly clean restroom, decent coffee. read more

Coffee, ehhh. Sandwich - good enough to fill me up. the company - not enough stars for that. oh my dear neighbor waylon, sometimes i miss ya so. every morning when i walk past this place I think of you singing your own rendition of Yellowcard's "Ocean Avenue" There's a place off Ocean Avenue where I used to sit and talk with Sue... By the way, if any of you yelpers call me "Sue" i will shank your ass okay, i'm just kidding. but don't call me Sue read more

Dependably good coffee. Nice staff. Good quick bites. After going here for many years while working, I am not going to stop anywhere that isn't a local doing their best against corporate coffee culture like this place does. read more

The customer service and negative energy of the older male store clerk, possibly the owner, just destroyed our experience here. Was the coffee good? It was pretty good -- but the stain of his negative demeanor was too overbearing that I cannot even focus on enjoying the coffee. It's Christmas, Buddy. At least smile and engage with customers in a friendly, positive way; or go home and think about a more introvert-based career. Definitely won't be coming back. read more

Nice neighborhood coffee shop on ocean Ave. It's within walking distance for me so I come here often with the gf. She loves their Mexican Oatmilk Mocha and I get the peppermint mocha. Staff is friendly as well. read more

Dig it...small, decent grinds (sandwiches), coffee/ tea, sweets, and smoothies. Not enough seating, service is a little slow, menu is limited. Birds in cages. 3.5 stars read more

All true, the guy at the front is quite rude. We placed a large order and he told us to wrap it up and hurry. He cut us off after each item ordered to tell the clueless girls behind him what to make. The food was decent. We ordered avocado shakes. They were the worst I've ever had and also the most expensive. $7 cup of milk, honey with maybe a 1/4 avocado. I am very disappointed at a place that deceivingly looks good. read more

Java On Ocean Coffee House - Slightly green avocado shake. You can almost taste avocado. So i got a $7 cup of milk and honey with a slight hint of avocado on the finish. - Coffee & Tea Near Me - San Francisco, California

A quirky isolated cafe on the sunny side of the street. I've been going here for years, since I live in the neighborhood. I like this cafe quite a bit. The coffee is strong, and there are many options for coffee drinks and drink alternatives. I enjoy this cafe more for the ambience and sunny warmth than the food options, yet many people seem to enjoy lunch at Java on Ocean. The cafe is comfortable with a variety of couch or chair seating. There is a pet bird that sings along with the music sometimes. They could offer free wireless, yet it may be flooded with laptops from nearby ccsf or sfsu. One more thing, Java on Ocean has meritworthy stamina, considering it has been in lonely operation out in the Ingleside for over 7 years. read more

I love-love-love this place! It's like an oasis in the OMI dead-zone. I'm not much into coffee but the chai and iced-tea just make my toes curl. The food is great too --if you're looking for sandwiches and bagels. And they really know how to do bagels. YUM. Oh Yeah! There are darling little finches in cages that sing. They just add to the great ambience. Java on Ocean is pretty out of place in this neighborhood. I wish there were more places of such quality around here! read more

What's up with the guy in the front he must have a bad attitude. I don't think he wants to work here!!! He is great at acting deaf. Don't ask any questions, it's too many questions. Specially about what kind of roast he has today, too many questions! I ordered a turkey bagel with egg and cheese, I must of got Oscar Mayers, or invisible turkey. It's also way over priced. Overall review: Service: SUCKS Quality: INVISIBLE Price: OVER PRICED read more

The front cashier worker is rude as F. He's an older man with thinning hair. I assume he's been at this job for a while given his age. Perhaps all his customer service lessons have been ravaged by the passing of time. Or maybe the long line during thanksgiving overwhelmed his mental faculties. I'm not sure. I just known that he's rude. If he's not the owner, he should have a talking to. Never coming back here again. read more

Java On Ocean Coffee House - Rude worker - Coffee & Tea Near Me - San Francisco, California

Java on Ocean is conveniently located a block away from my friend Jonathan the Jew's house. Whenever we're sitting on his couch playing Halo 3 in the middle of the afternoon, or he's high as balls and gets the munchies, we head down to Java on Ocean for a sandwich. The sammies are pretty good here, maybe a little overpriced, but they are pretty thick with delicious veggies, so you can't really complain. This seems like a cool place to hang out if you need to do some homework and have a cup of joe, but I've never been here for longer than 15 minutes. The people who do hang out here don't seem like coffee house douchebags, which is definitely a plus. The coffee isn't spectacular spectacular, but it does the job. All you coffee snobs can go to hell. read more

The best coffee house in the neighborhood! And I am a very serious coffee drinker! Coffee: Always consistently tastes great and is always hot. Food: I love the humus wrap. Service: They have a tight nit staff that is always a pleasure. Atmosphere: Once you get over being annoyed by the chirping birds, its actually one of the most cozy coffee houses in the city. Price: I always felt it was a little too expensive, but the coffee, food, service, and atmosphere make it worth it. So I guess I could give them just 4 stars because of the price, but I read a review on here from some douche bag that gave them only two stars because he wants it turned into a bourgeoisie gentrified Thai restaurant. Why take over one of the only good business in the neighborhood, when there is so many vacant buildings? If Java On Ocean was ever gone, I would be really sad. This is one of the best business in the neighborhood along with the Vietnamese restaurant next to 24 Hour Fitness. read more

I randomly stumbled in here the other day (and I mean stumbled, damn construction going on all over the place on Ocean, yikes!) and ordered a loaded and rockin' pastrami sandwich enjoyed next to the music of the in-house birdies...John M's kinda right about it's vibe of being a cool place to kick it between classes, though; the couches make for a nicer lounge than the austere library over at State.... read more

Last night, frantically came here with a friend after being bummed out about Socha being closed. UUGH. Anyways wanted somewhere nearby with free wifi (2 hours) didn't stay long enough to see what happens after that. Ordered a Iced Vanilla Latte which was probably not worth it. Baklava was the side pastry I chose. Didn't have a bad experience, just wasn't too fond of this place. Greenhouse still rocks to me. LOL read more

OK! The latte here is awful. Really bitter and you know I AM VERY PARTICULAR ABOUT MY COFFEE/LATTE! Even after adding two bags of sugar and a spoon of cinnamon, STILL bitter. I also ordered the chicken hummus wrap which was delicious! Very crunchy wrapped with dices of tomatoes, lettuce, and probably some cucumber & other veggies. Really good. The service was great; friendly staff. I'm going to give them a 3 star b/c I really was not pleased with my latte. Not pleased at all. read more

I can't believe I haven't wrote about this place. I've been a regular to this cafe since I moved to the area. Love the quaint and eclectic decor with huge windows that bring natural sunlight into the cafe. The tables are not too crowded with accessible outlets. The music with varied styles is soothing and doesn't overpower your focus in reading/study. **The cutest thing about this place is that they keep 2 little birds in the cages above the bookshelf, and they sometimes churn along with the music! The owner of the cafe is very friendly, always greets you with a smile and make you feel welcomed here. I love the caramel macchiato he makes which is according to the level of sweetness I like. They also sell yummy Arabic desserts such as baklava, pastries as well as wraps and sandwiches. Bonus: 1 hour free wifi Tip: minimum $5 charge for debit/credit cards read more

This place has a nice ambience and great tasting drinks with a lot of variety, but this review is to complain about an employee. I went with my friend and we were deciding on what to get because everything looked amazing. There's this one worker; he's a middle aged man with thin hair and was wearing a black shirt working the espresso machine. He would sporadically shoot mean glance to hurry us up even when there wasn't even a line behind. He asked me what I wanted every 30 seconds for at least 3 times. We were paying separately but he insisted on taking 2 orders at once. The nice cashier who was taking this order was confused so we were clarifying to her our orders. He repeated the order rudely to cashier again and it was incorrect. Me and my friend had to clarify again once more to that man. The other workers seem really chill and friendly but someone like that man should work in the back or get his attitude in shape. Drinks & ambience delightful. Had a rich flavorful cafe mocha. The staff are kind and understanding except for that rude man. Just unacceptable customer service. read more

Came here a lot when I first moved back to SF to look for a new job and stopped for a while, but now I'm back! I don't know why I stopped coming here - it's the perfect place to work, study, hang out, or just relax. Their house coffee tastes great and strong, and every time I'm here there's table space and outlets. The staff is super chill and so is the atmosphere of the place. Good selection of breakfast foods, sandwiches, pastries/sweets, granola bars, chips, juices, and lots more. Their smoothies are expensive but really quite delicious. Walgreens, a produce store, and Whole Foods are a short distance away too, for people who like to eat snacks and fruit while they study like myself. :P For anyone who drives, parking is pretty easy here. There are metered spots along the main street (Ocean Ave.), but there's also residential parking all around. Never have to park more than a block away. Public transportation is really easy too, and what I use most of the time. Not sure whether I like this cafe or Fog Lifter (couple blocks away) better - but they're both so great, you're bound to have a great study session at either! read more

I'm not sure why my original review was removed (other than it being negative), but I came in last Wednesday, and they charged me three dollars for a small, plain chocolate chip cookie. And $2.75 for a Vitamin Water. Ms. Field's cookies don't cost that much and taste much better. I could get a Cako cupcake for the same. And those dodn't taste like hospital food, as did Java's cookie. I will never come back again. Very rude. Not worth the price. Ridiculous. I noticed quite a number of one star reviews for this place have been removed since reading them last week. read more

I visited this cute and cozy place for a couple hours this afternoon. Not too crowded and had a lot of space from others. I liked that they weren't blasting music like another coffee shop nearby. Had a delicious turkey sandwich with a nice vinaigrette. The staff was friendly and welcoming. I will return to try more items from their menu and enjoy the ambiance. read more

I breathe a sigh of relief that this coffee house exists. Ocean Ave is ripe for development and this is one of the few establishments that is truly attractive and inviting. The atmosphere is very chill, casual funky decor, terrific old building. Bird chirping in a big cage. People with laptops or newspapers, always friendly-ish, and many of them gasp are talking to each other. I keep my big dog toward the front and under control and he's always been welcomed. The food is good and one $7 breakfast burrito keeps me filled until an early dinner. I'm not sure why other Yelpers have posted that the food is expensive. It's exactly the same cost as any decent coffeehouse slash chalkboard cafe in the city, and cheaper than the ones in pricier neighborhoods. If you want super cheap coffee, then go to one of those combo Chinese food and donut places and suffer the consequences. The owner is always there working -- always -- and ALWAYS has a believable pleasant smile. Which is astounding considering that he is *always* there. Sign of the economic times surely. read more

I've been coming here for a while and forgot to throw down my impression! Here goes! Like a beer garden or wine tasting, you go to coffee shops to sample the coffee (along with all the other amenities). I've tried the sandwiches and wraps here and they're all quite delicious. You can't go wrong and though the price point is a tad high, I think they are totally worth it. But I come to review one item and one item alone: the ice coffee. Phenomenal. Picture this: you first sip, the cool solution of coffee, water, milk and sugar (at least the last two I put in. To each her own!) run over your tongue cooling your senses and preping you for the flavor to come. It's not quite there yet, but the anticipation builds as the sublime flavors come into view. A warm bitterness at first but as expected from coffee, the natural charm of the roasted and ground and steeped bean. But as the bitterness passes, the roasty, smokey, and most amazing chocolaty flavor rises from the depths as if greeting the taste buds like a long lost friend. With each sip. And finally, the flavors roll away with only a mere hint of the chocolate with no horrid aftertaste that many cup's of joe are well known for. Sold I'd say. I asked the barista what composed the house coffee/ice coffee and she said that it was house blend of all the beans they had....how long did it take them to get the right blend for this most perfect flavor? I'd say that any place that takes the time to produce the most amazing flavors in the most basic of offerings at a coffee house is worth a stop, chill, and enjoyment of such refined and well worked coffee tones. read more

Java on Ocean is my favorite place to study. There is plenty of chairs and there is plenty of plugs. It is the ideal study area for those who are sick of studying at the library and at home. As for food, it is OK, it is your typical coffee shop with all of your typical coffee shop foods and drinks. I never found anything special about the actual coffee but I do enjoy it. They do have a credit card minimum so be aware of that. The place has a semi-eastern, new age feel...It is not really my type of ambiance but I usually listen to my own music anyways so it has never been a problem for me. read more

Stopped in for a quick sandwich. Veggie falafel $5.85 - want hummus? uh sure... Adds $1.00.. Service not so friendly who should mention that there is an extra charge for hummus. I pay $6.85 and wait, and wait, and get anxious about the wait and being late for a client appointment, and wait some more. Finally i have this giant wad of lettuce wrapped in lavash with a few dry falafel. Sure would like some hummus to make this thing stick together...hmmm no hummus??!! Too late in the car -can't go back. Two bites in, the thing crumbles into bits . I clean up the jetsam, trash the 3/4 sammich and race to my clients office hungry and cranky and irked that I paid nearly $7 for lettuce all over my car. --Update 2/3/08--- The owner emailed me to apologize for my not so good experience and to offer to make it up. Adding star and removing smart remark until I can re-visit. read more

Wow, they are already reviewed up the yinyang, but I'll put my 2 cents in. One special NOTE: The sun blazes through the window in the PM and can be intolerable. Go in the AM, or make sure you pick a seat not in the direct sunlight. I've gone here 4 times now. -The 1st time my Americano wasn't so great. It was weak despite the fact that the cup was only 2/3 full. -The 2nd time I tried again and it was made by a different guy and it tasted great. It was about 4/5 full, which is good for half & half. -The 3rd time I had an iced coffee and it had plenty of flavor. I like a strong coffee (why I get Americanos) and this one fit the bill -The 4th time I got another Americano and it was pretty good, but not as good as the 2nd. It's possible that it might be in my head, but I'm always looking for a good bitter bite tempered by the copious amounts of half & half I put in. Anyways, I'm extremely glad to have this place literally 2 blocks from my front door (downhill on the way there too!). Music, decor, location are all good. I read a bunch of bad things about the food, but with a price point north of $5, it's out of my range anyways. A plain bagel is a bit too, toasting it is 25c extra, and butter extra, and cream cheese a bunch more extra. But I don't go to coffee shops to eat anyways. read more

Couches are kinda frumpy but this Coffee shop is by far my favorite in San Francisco. The workers are efficient without being fake and the Coffee is very good. The people here know what they're doing, point blank. And they are always stocked with the SF Chronicle, a place where I can read a hard copy of it for free. They play a lot of funky native-american/pow-wow music which might distract you if you are trying to get some studying done but I like the place. And it stays open a bit later than other coffee shops around the area. Recommend the White Chocolate Mocha, Chocolate cappuccino, and the raspberry mocha. ALL DELICIOUS! read more

Went to get some lunch with a good friend thinking the cafe looked cute and possibly in the same chain as the java beach cafe in the sunset (which we love!) but our experience was very negative. When I was waiting to order, the man behind the counter shouted at me "are you going to order or just stand there all day" I ordered a wrap and when I took the first bite I honestly wanted to throw up it was so gross. Hey you guys, I'm the friend mentioned above. All the reviews about the guy behind the counter are pretty much on par, he's a smart-ass. So they have a deli style sandwich menu right? They are not deli sandwiches, they don't have a selection of bread or cheese like you might expect. That's not the problem I have though. I ordered a sandwich and I looked, I'm honest to God not a picky guy. The thing that irritates me was that the lettuce they put in my sandwich was the same lettuce they use for their salads. That's means that my sandwich had salad dressing in it. I concluded that the workers there are lazy and mix up their ingredients when they don't feel like making stuff for particular items on the menu, that shouldn't translate to a $10 dollar sandwich. I got a bad feeling that this laziness indicates how the rest of the stuff they serve is prepared. This experience lead us to literally leave our food barely touched on the table and go somewhere else to eat. Point being, we do not suggest eating here. read more

This is the coolest place ever! Singing Song Bird! Cafe Borgia! Soothing and calming background music that is not blaring like at the other corporate coffee shops! I love coming here and grabbing a Cafe Borgia. Also, a Cafe Borgia is a chocolate orange citrus flavored coffee with cream. Java on Ocean makes the best one! I'm a new resident to the city who is discovering many things... such as, school in San Francisco is closed during the Chinese Lunar New Year. It was on this day that my boyfriend and I got up at 7 am to go to school, only to discover this fact, which made us feel like dumb white kids from Marin. Tired and out of bed early for no reason when we could have been sleeping in, we wanted to grab coffee before heading back home. Most places were closed except for Java On Ocean. Okay, I'll say this: it's expensive. I can get coffee for less than $1 at Cafe Rosso on SFSU campus. It's totally worth it to go to Java On Ocean though. Hookahs, lamps, and Morroccan style couches! A pretty little singing bird in the cage! And despite the high price, I had probably what is the most amazing soy white mocha in the world... and I don't like most white mochas (especially ones with syrup - boo Starbucks!). The windows were large and allowed to early morning sun to shine in and warm us as we comfortable sat on a couch beneath a potted tree, drank our coffee, and ate our bagels. It's the experience, not just the awesome coffee. fjalfsdfsaklgnfdsg,sd!!! I love this place. read more

I'm judging this place primarily on ambiance. It's a beautiful coffee house! It looks like it's a great place to study or hang out. There are a lot of tables, chairs, and couches as well as large windows and high ceilings. If I was still a student, I would probably come here all the time. Coffee is good, but not great; hot chocolate was delicious! Sandwiches looked pretty good, but I can't comment since I haven't tried any of them. read more

Friend and I had some time to spare as we were waiting for our haircuts so we decided to stop into this little coffee shop. I haven't been to too many coffeehouses except your standard Starbux and Pete's so I'd imagine this is how your typical coffee joint should look. The feel is very Bohemian with different types of artwork adorning the walls, strange music playing, and worn down sofas. We went around 3pm on a slow weekday, so seating was more than ample. Even though it's literally a few blocks from CCSF, I wouldn't say it's the greatest place to study or curl up to a book. The noisy streetcar steps away and the slightly loud music can get pretty distracting. The latte I ordered was pretty decent, can't complain. My friend, Eric who's quite the caffeine addict ordered a regular coffee and said it was pretty bold and flavorful. The place also looked like they had a pretty wide selection of baked foods and sandwiches for those who want a bite with their cup of joe. My only complaint about the place was the service. My friend and I were standing at the counter for literally a good minute before we were approached for our order. Now a minute may not seem like much to those of you reading, but for sure it's a long time if the workers two feet away continue to chat away when they clearly see you standing there. I'll probably never head back there. The coffee's decent, but the subpar service and the always cold, windy area is enough to keep me away. read more
