This Java Beach became one of my favorite coffee shops to hang out with my friends over the weekend. The coffee shop is located close to the ocean beach, very nice location and the environment. Not too crowd at night. Feel relaxing. They offer pastry, sandwiches, soup, salad, coffee, tea and beer. I really enjoy the outdoor seating a lot. The restroom is considering clean to me. One of my favorite cafes in all of San Francisco. The vibe reminds me of a pre-gentrified Sf my parents told me about/ the vibe I briefly experienced during early adolescence. I love this coffee place! It's big enough that there's plenty of seating but it's smalll enough to have a good community vibe. I got the white mocha and it was very delicious, I highly recommend. They are all sprawled out on the few couches while glaring at newbies who just stopped in for a meal. Who cares? They're really harmless. After moving from San Jose almost a decade ago, this place was my home and taught me a few survival skills about living in San Francisco. I come from the part of San Jose (my family home) where I was taught to say please, thank you, and excuse me if you unintentionally bump into someone. I am thankful to Java Beach for wiping all that nonsense out of my system and skilling me in rude street maneuvers. For example, if I bump someone in passing and it's obviously my mistake, I can give you that WTF? STARE like it's your fault. You will say sorry without hesitation. Cool skill, right? I learned that at Java Beach almost a decade ago! So, if you need to touch up on your rudeness and your tummy is rumbling for a delicious sandwich. Yes, delicious sandwich, then this is your place. The warm sandwiches are the best! (sm. $4.25 med. $5.95 large $6.65) The bread is absolutely scrumptious. It has that perfected crunch sound when your teeth hits the surface and then sinks into soft delicious goodness. Oh, yeaaahh...that's what I'm talking about. CRUNCH! A coworker and I had a beer here after work. Coffee shops that serve beer automatically get 4 Stars from me regardless of the service, location, food quality, health code violations, ext. WHATEVER. They serve BEER. What else do you want? Coffee? A scone? Pft. You people just don't know. This is my go to place whether I am alone or with my bf. I especially come here when I feel bleh. I tend to order the caramel latte when I need a pick me upper and I switch off on the choices of sandwiches they have. I love the service here and the chill atmosphere. I can relax here for a bit and enjoy my sandwich. Then I walk across the street to take a stroll at Ocean Beach to embrace it all as I continue to enjoy my cup of joy. We all need change; change from the monotony of work as well as change from the monotony of monogamy/partners etc. Since our mind seeks "perpetual novelty", breaking the limiting patterns of "same old;same old" always brings joy to our heart. One of the few places in SF where I feel really acts as a "change" to my dense urban living is when I ride the 38 to the very end, walk the half mile down Ocean Beach to Java Beach Caf, order a strong coffee and snuggle into the sofa. The environment of surfer dudes and aging hippies transports my mind to Lahaina Beach and the smell of the sea breeze is making my vacation in Maui memorable. I sip a Stella from the tap and fall into a stupor. Around me, people bask in the lazy glow of sunshine eating sandwiches and drinking coffee while others are being playful with their work courtesy the free wifi. The sound of the Pacific Ocean reminds me of the infinite potential of the human spirit. Life is refreshing(maybe the 4 stellas have something to do with it?). I stumble into the N Judah and as I head back to my concrete jungle, I feel that I have become the change which I seek in the world. read more

The food is decent, and so is the pricing. I would give it 4 stars, except I think there are a few things that they should work on. Their staff is not very friendly and it is a little unorganized. You order at the counter and the food gets brought out to you, unless it is soup, then you have to wait for it at the counter. You also wait for any drinks at the counter, which is normal, but the soup thing is strange. They yell out your name in order to find you and bring you your food. I think they should invest in some numbers that us customers can bring to the table or something so that we don't have to constantly hear yelling while we are eating. Also there isn't much indoor seating, which is a bummer because most of the time, the weather in SF, especially by Ocean Beach, kinda stinks. Maybe they can install some heat lamps outside? Of course, on a warm day, this isn't a problem, but we all know how often that happens. Java Beach Cafe may have a cozy ambiance and mouth-watering sandwiches, but that all begins to taste a little sour once the folks who work there open their mouths. When I requested dutch crunch on my sandwich, I was met with a surly look and a sigh. Despite ordering my sandwich with "The Works", it showed up with only a couple of lonely jalapenos and a swab of mustard. I decided not to push the issue of the lack of lettuce, tomatoes, and well everything else that makes a sandwich delicious, but did ask for a bit of mayo to help it all go down a bit easier. The chic couldn't have been more annoyed. Finally, when I asked for a box to take home my half-eaten poorly-made sandwich, the gal behind the counter looked at me like I had just asked her to hand over a hundred bucks. She then decided to give me a flimsy, wax paper pastry bag instead. Seriously? I'm not usually much of a complainer, but this was too much to stomach. I hope for everyone's sake that the day I was there just happened to be an abnormally miserable day at JB. The employees are slower than the second coming of christ and rude to boot! More interested in chitter-chatter behind the scenes, they were slow to agknowledge my presence and then did their best to make me feel like the most Unwanted Customer Ever by rolling their eyes when I asked a question, sighing loudly when I requested no ice in my tea, and so on and so forth. Almost as polite as pitbulls guarding a junkyard, these folks need a visit from Miss Manners. And then a doctor. To pull whatever is stuck up there out. Aside from the heaping helping of nasty, my salad was delicious and my tea was divine. The location is excellent and convenient on my morning jog. A quick way to offend a consistent and regular customer who purchases a very reliable amount of food and beverages: Walk up to them and ask them whether they have bought anything yet. Then comment to them that you need them to buy something. If I wasn't a regular, I'd get it. If this person didn't know my name, I'd get it. If this person hadn't taken my order countless times, again, I'd get it. However, this person knew my name, has taken my order countless times, knows that I order more than the $2 cup of tea and is aware that I regularly "consume" at Java Beach Cafe. What she may not know, but others do, is that I often make purchases at Java Beach at the Zoo, that I frequently grab dinner type food at Ocean Beach and I likely do one or the other of these things at about the rate of 2 times a day. My comment to Java Beach - think about this and suggest to your supervisors that offending the regulars is not good for repeat business. Update: Don't bother trying to email the owners at info@javabeachcafe.com - the email address is rejected immediately because of quota problems on the email account that receives info. read more

The muffins. Sinful. The toasted bagel sandwiches, the croissants, oh man. Breakfast here is heaven. The coffee is probably some of the best coffee I've had. It's strong. It's delicious. It gets you MOVING. And their sandwiches are incredible. Hot is better, but cold is just as tasty. Lines are common, parking can be rough, but you circle that damn block until you find a place, get a coffee, and some food. Thank me later. This was right on the way to work from my place in outer sunset, and it was hard to pass it without stopping. It's not cheap. A coffee, a soup for lunch later, and a veggie bagel would set me back about $10-12. The soups are hit and miss. Some are great, some aren't all that good. Stay away from the bisque types. I have had poor experiences with those. All in all, the staff are really chill and friendly, an ATM is inside, a lot of pet lovers around, and great for breakfast or lunch. Seating can be hard to come by when it's busy, and there's always at least two people taking up an entire table each with a laptop and a backpack just surfing the internet for hours. **obligatory get off my lawn comment** And if you're able, try the Guinness Shake. We ordered coffee, which was okay but nothing special. Go up the street for Trouble Cafe for better. We also ordered a sandwich, which is the reason for this review. When we showed up there were about 4 other parties waiting for their sandwiches. Some people were getting angry. 3 bikers said Forget It and left. After 25 minutes, we asked where our sandwich was. It's coming, they're backlogged. No apology. Nothing. 35 minutes into waiting, I'm shivering outside because my coffee is long gone. I walk in and ask where our sandwich is. There are 2 parties ahead of us. I ask for a refund. The cashier doesn't apologize, she says, "Uh, what?" I tell her I want my money back. There's no way I'm waiting 45 minutes for a sandwich and paying. I get my money back after she runs to the back, gets a manager's initials, and comes back out. No apology. Manager? Nowhere to be seen. Would I come back here? Not a chance in hell. I've had better service in third world countries and honestly there are better, more friendly businesses up the street. read more

I'm not really sure what the appeal is. I'm not even sure why I come here despite it being the only coffee shop around with wi-fi. Staff -Super friendly, almost overly so but you don't mind because they aren't at all saccharine. I don't know how they ALL generate the joy and I'm a little scared to find out. Atmosphere (Granted, I'm only here on weekends or evenings) -Loud -Crowded -Cramped -Impossible to maneuver to the counter to get your drink/sandwich without pardoning yourself four times and nowhere to stand that's out of the way while others take turns knocking your shoulders and stepping on your toes on the way to retrieve THEIR goods. Food -Sandwiches come with shredded iceberg lettuce and plain potato chips. Ho-to-the-fuckin'-hum. It reminds me of going to the decaying A&W drive-in in rural Montana growing up. Do they have tater tots here, too? -Standard assortments of refined sugar/flour baked goods. Drink -Extra star for serving beer and wine, even if the wine selection is "red" or "white" and there's just a few beer taps. -Meh mochas. -No loose tea from what I recall. Clientele -Where do all the yuppies come from? I can't figure it out. Are they local tourists? Did they read about this place in the Chronicle? Did they get a "deal"? It's a steady stream- they get their coffee, have dull conversation for 15 minutes, leave, and are immediately replaced by a facsimile. -Lots of runners/cycle folks- spandex and sweat, deftly highlighting middle-aged dudes' junk- but maybe that's a plus for you. -Fleece. -Babies. -Couples who are clearly on their first OKCupid date. Bring headphones unless you love to vicariously live awkward blind dates through others. This is a very cute coffee and sandwich joint that highly resembles an old surf shop right next to ocean beach. It has a mix of a laidback and crowded environment with free wifi, outdoor seating, and groovy music--most tables are usually taken by customers reading up of their news so expect to fight for a seat and table. I always order the everyday latte or tea---nothing extraordinary but the beachy atmosphere more than compensates. Keep in mind it's CASH ONLY, although they do have a small atm machine inside but it's better to come cash ready to save yourself the $3 service fee. Overall, getting coffee at Java Beach is like a 30 minute escape vacation to the beach away from SF city life. I love a cafe where they know how to make Americanos- not dumping the expresso- but letting it slowly drip into the tilted reservoir- to prevent all that good coffee bean oil from escaping... the result- a fragrant, creme frothed coffee swirling on top... Wonderful sandwiches, pastries, teas and BEER...WIFI service too...And for all you sun lovers- the front patio has enough seating and benches to make some Vit. D... If the coffee were to my standards, I'd give it a 5 star. But, sadly it is not. I have never been a fan of those "serve yourself" coffee pump canisters. However, you will be safe with any espresso drink - I usually get a caramel latte - very good. If you are looking for a really tasty deli sandwich - Java Beach will satisfy. They have both warm and cold options, but note - you can request "warm" with any. I love their turkey swiss - served warm. The meat is juicy and the roll is perfectly toasted. This is also the ideal spot for happy hour (4-7) on a sunny day. You can sit in the sun facing the dunes, share a pitcher of Guinness while watching the surfers cross the street, dog walkers and N-Judah riders get off. There is a median garden park on the street for overflow and also if you want a more tranquil spot to sip your latte or pint. read more

I've been going to Java forever so I am so glad that they have the best hot sub sandwich in SF! I have been a Sub Center advertisement for as long as I can remember but Java truly has outdone Sub Center on West Portal. They even know it by advertising their hot sub sandwiches as "There are also our world famous hot sub sandwiches. Unparalleled in size and quality, these hot subs must be experienced to understand." on their website and I can not agree with the statement more. The bread is perfect, the lettuce shredded, turkey carved, special dressing Italian. The Large sub w tax is under $7 and it is worth every penny. The carrot cake is to die for as well! You get free Wi Fi with purchase and if your in the mood for spirits there is a great selection of beers on tap. This is not your ordinary little coffee shop by the beach. read more

Hot Tsunami. I never thought I'd be able to say those two words in public, out loud, and consistently. And, have it be a restaurant order, too. The only place that's worth a stop west of Stanyan for a late night sandwich. I've tried them all. Out of the dozen or choices, this is the only sandwich that's served 'til 11pm every night, whether you take it to go or sit in, that's reliably good. This space is really diverse and typically full. It's both neighborhood locals, people from the city that take that one outing a year to the beach & college students. With a back bar of a few local beers, indoor booths, and an outdoor patio. The menu being a long list of solid deli sandwiches SF style -- with dutch crunch. I really don't know what else you would ask for in a cafe like this? Craft coffee? It's two doors down at their other cafe, Beach side, and you could just bring it here? It's at the end of the N Judah line, too. The late night viability of this place is a major stand out part of it all, and my late to home work nights are thankful. read more

Upon walking in, we were notified by an employee that "There's no more food. We're all out." I was a little confused. As it turned out, they had no food left, only coffee. Java Beach Cafe...What can i say you never disappoint... you should take what ever it is that makes you so successful and open up a club.... the way you pack a house... awe inspiring... My date and i continued our day with a stop off at this cozy little establishment...with the order line running out the door... and literally rubbing elbows with the other patrons... again my date came to the rescue with her charming smile making the crowd some what unnoticeable... (sorry not completely) :) My date had a warm peasant pie with spinach and feta cheese... felt like being wrapped up in a warm towel straight from the dryer... and the soup...UH just intensified that feeling.... wish i'd ordered the same thing... I ordered the san patricio... cubed chicken breast in a mustard and mayo slathering with avocado and jack cheese served on ciabatta roll... it was ok... the chicken kept falling out...kinda messy... but still enjoyable... just make sure you get alot of napkins!! If it weren't for the weather i would've took my date back to the beach to enjoy our food... like a little pic nic... probably would have been ok because of the scalding hot, jasmine green tea... don't get me wrong, it was quite enjoyable... we just had to wait about 10min for it to cool down... :) there must have been some non-locals there or maybe they were just lazy, because you're supposed to bus your own dishes and garbage... but the coffee table we were using to eat off was piled with other people's left overs and magazines and news papers.... some what embarrassing to take a date... just hope she didn't mind.... have to remember to go there when it's not the typical lunch rush... So I'm going to jump on the hipper than thou bandwagon and say this place used to be a lot cooler a few years ago. I remember the good ol' days when you could roll up to Java Beach, actually get a seat and get your order in under 10 minutes. Maybe this was when I was young and idealistic and didn't know any better, but I remember this place being a lot less crowded. And really, when all I want is a place to sit with a bagel and some coffee, I don't want crazy crowded, all I want is a seat. Since I have moved to the Outer Sunset, I try to come to Java Beach as a local, but the line and crowd always trumps my interest in staying. I mean, I don't want to pan a place for being popular, and in many ways getting the popularity it deserves, but for CHRISTSAKE CAN'T A GIRL GET A SEAT! Now I just walk up, survey the line and assess the situation. It often means taking it to go and sitting on the beach (not bad at all, pretty awesome if I do say so myself), or taking it back to my apartment. Oh Java Beach! The local stomping grounds for ladies in puffer vests, dirty surfer men, and laptop intellectuals. The crowd here is surprisingly consistent, which makes the space a bit cozy (read: crowded) at times. That being said, Java Beach is a true treat along the coast. There is plenty of seating inside and outside on the patio, so even when it's busy, you can manage to find a seat eventually. On weekends, lines are out the door, but they move very quickly, so don't be disheartened. The lines are there for a good reason! This place knows how to make a great soy latte. The pastries (croissants, bagels, muffins) are tasty, and the baristas will warm them up for you. Their sandwiches are just what you want for a foggy, mellow sunset lunch. The bread is delicious (I like Dutch Crunch), and the sizes are extremely generous! My favorite is the **HOT VEGGIE**. So delicious, cheesy, and crunchy. Chips are included if you get it "for here" or ask for them with your to-go order! Overall, I highly recommend Java Beach... although I secretly hope that the lines don't increase. It is a great place for a satisfying lunch and brings a lot of much needed character to the outer sunset. 5 Stars! read more

I don't think I would come here if I didn't live in the neighborhood, and I find the interior to remind me way too much of my troubled mid-twenties when I spent way too many hours having espresso-induced anxiety attacks in cafes with chalkboard menus, but Java Beach deserves recognition. Why? Because they are open till 11 pm. Yes, here, in this strange neighborhood, we have a cafe that serves actual food till a normal hour. This is great. You hop off the N, the friendly proprietress (who actually remembers you after you come by a second or third time) is nice to you, and you get decent food at a normal price. The cafe is full of all kinds of people at all hours, because most people have lives that dont't stop at 7 or 8 and isn't it nice to have a place open till 11pm? It is nice.
