I don't know about you, but if you spend a couple of hours at the zoo like I did, watching cuddly animals doing their thing, you may not be in the mood for eating meat at lunch afterward. It's not as if I had a conscience. I just had a "Circle of Life" moment when I got up to the order counter and decided to get the $15.95 Beetnik Salad, a healthy veggie compilation, along with a $6 Arnold Palmer (Photo 6). It was a blend of arugula and romaine lettuce mixed with roasted beets, Full apple slices, chopped dates, roasted almonds, and Parmesan cheese (Photo 7). I asked for their thick housemade green goddess dressing on the side but ended up tossing it in myself since it was pretty tasty. All around my solitary table were laptoppers who were in for the long run. The subs and wraps looked delish. Next time. FOOD - 4 stars...genuinely fresh salad you shouldn't drown with dressing AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars..pleasant enough but swarming with laptoppers SERVICE - 4 stars...attentive at the counter TOTAL - 4 stars...nice place for a post-zoo nosh RELATED - Exploring the Sunset? Whether you're going to the beach or zoo this spot is in the perfect place for a quick little pick me up. There's food, drinks, and everytime I pass by there's a good amount of people are sitting and enjoying their items or people waiting for their drinks to go. The ambiance gives cute little beach town cafe. I'm not gonna lie I had low expectations for my drinks but I was blown out of the water with the quality. Only thing that sucks is that they have small shop hours and close pretty early in the day. So if you get the chance to go I say take it!

Death of an era...

I am so sad to say this, but Java Beach is no more... They changed all their food vendor to Sysco and now everything tastes like garbage, along cutting half the menu. I have LOVED their Tsunami sandwich for over a decade and now it tastes nothing like the old sandwich. The bread is thin and airy, the contents all feel cheap. I am going to finish my meal and bid goodbye. I wish them luck with this new direction while I morn the death of Java Beach.

Habit not to check reviews and only my personal experience A breakfast burrito, one cup of orange juice from gallon jug and a coffee all with no bag roughly 27.00 and some change Would never again for this price and quality. Eggs and bacon have been somewhat consistent in pricing tortillas the same as well don't believe there's any cheese in there if so never tasted can't really justify the amount of money for a burrito like that but limited selection near the water online photo of their menu, showing the burrito compared to what was received Drastically different Orange juice and coffee taste OK coffee was lukewarm

If you want to get a coffee before or after visiting the SF Zoo, this is the place. There is space to sit down inside or outside (WiFi included)The associates were really helpful and delightful. I ordered a large Mexican Vanilla bean latte, my first time trying it and it was a pleasant surprise. They sell ice cream too. Highly recommended this place.

Cute cafe by Ocean Beach. The veggie bagel was delicious. Good bagels and large selection of coffee, espresso drinks, teas, soda, and beer. Perfect stop after the beach!

Delicious sandwich and friendly staff. I took away a point because they forgot to make my sandwich.

Location is definitely what this place has going for it. It's right next to the zoo and just a few blocks from the beach. There's tons of seating (inside and out) and the beach theme is super cute. Bathroom is also clean, which is a plus especially so close to the beach. Food comes out pretty quickly. It's the type of place where you order at the counter and pick it up yourself. The food itself is very mediocre and super expensive for the portion. We ordered: -smoked salmon bagel (3/5 suuuper small portion for $15) -tsunami sandwich (4/5 good flavors but again for $17 way too small) -chocolate ganache cold brew (4/5) Probably wouldn't come again for the food, but nice vibes for a sunny day.

Outside of the Cafe

Date: May 10th, 2025 - My Vegan Breakfast Burrito, that cost $12.50 was Extremely Delicious.... It was Insanely Hot, from my Very 1st bite, until my last. But Every time I took a bite, the damn thing kept falling apart. It took Everything, to make sure the contents didn't end up on my clothes instead of in my mouth. My Cup of Tea, cost $6.80 and the gal who rang up our order, didn't even Fill it up All the way. It was just slightly over 1/2 full. When I Politely asked if I could get a Refill, she gave me a dirty look as she Snapped at me, telling me "NO!" Then she stormed away from my Bff & I, indignantly. My BFF got the Java Club ($18.25), on a Sub roll, as Supposedly they had No More of the bread left that they make it with normally. They took Forever to make our meal. Well over 30 minutes... and considering they weren't all that busy, it shouldn't have takin that long to make two meals. Our meal cost $40, which included a Tip that I gave her. But after her Rudeness, I should've taken the tip back. She's lucky I didn't. My BFF's sandwich was Not worth the $18.25 it cost, considering the Rudeness of the employee, and the fact that he said it was tasteless & dry. the restaurant was Filthy inside. It could Definitely use some cleaning up. There was trash all over the floors. and Not once did I see an employee come over to try to clean up the trash on the floors, or try to clean the dirty tables. It was Very Much, Unappealing. I actually Considered giving them another chance at a later date, to be Better the next time. Especially for what I paid for our meal. But after the employee disrespected Us.... When I was Very Polite.... She made it Very Easy for me to decide, to Never go back again. EDIT: I've read a lot of Reviews where people said they were given chips with their sandwiches. We were given NONE with Our orders. Nor was it Offered. My Burrito cost $12.50 and it was Very Small. I've gotten Much Bigger burritos from Chipotle for $10. My BFF's sandwich was $18.25 and he Also got No Chips with it. His sandwich was probably 6" if that. So Definitely NOT worth the price tag. Especially since it didn't have the Turkey or Bacon on it, that's listed on the menu. I saw Loads of Big Bags of chips above the space where the gals made food. But did they offer Any chips to My bff or myself, or to the few other customers in there?? Nope! Not even once. I Do Not Recommend this place to Anyone. Do Not Waste your Time or your Money. It's Not worth the Sub Par quality of Food or the Crappy Customer Service. This was Our 1st and Last time to visit Java Beach Cafe at the Zoo. Even though it's close to where I live.... I'll go elsewhere from now on. $40 for a Small Vegan Burrito, Small Club sandwich and a Small cup of Tea that wasn't even Full + tip, is Definitely Too Much to spend at a place that doesn't Care about their customers.. 2nd EDIT: the Owner contacted me, via private messages, which I Greatly Appreciate. Even though my 1st time Visit to Java Beach at the Zoo, yesterday, was Very Unpleasant, the Owner, made it right. I Really do Hate leaving a Bad Review for places I visit, Especially a place I've wanted to visit, since 2001, but Never really had the time to do so, until yesterday. So Thank You Buffy, for making it right. My BFF & I Will Be Back, on a future date, to give this Cafe another chance... to make our visit Enjoyable. Have a Blessed Mother's Day. Tasty subs, generously sized and fairly priced. Lots of indoor seating and some on the sidewalk. Conveniently located across from the zoo.

Good coffee and bagels, not a bargain but hey it's San Francisco. Would go again any time and worth a stop if you're in the area.

Re: NO. 19 (corned beef) & Potato Salad…read more Wow. Great sandwich!!! I've been looking for a place in town that delivers the same type of meals I'd find in Katz's (nyc), and Wise Sons is good!!! The bread was on point, not soggy at all even though this particular sandwich comes with coleslaw inside (I loved the sweetness of the slaw with the Russian dressing). The corned beef was spectacular. And I also liked their potato salad very much. You can bet I'll be ordering again from this place.

Weirdly, I often have egg-salad sandwiches on my mind, even though I know they can be gross. I've had plenty of egg-salad disasters, sandwich and otherwise, and I'm normally a very gun-shy person, but if a place has egg salad on its menu, I'll probably order it. Wise Sons always has egg salad on its menu. The problem is that it didn't have any egg salad on hand the first two times I came here.* Whatever I had instead, both times (and I had something different each time) was delicious. I don't know why I haven't tried the latkes yet. I guess I'm not a very wise son. The place is old school and feels perfect inside. It won't transport you magically to the past like many killer authentic interiors will, but it's very easy to imagine what the inside of this store looked like in 1941 or whenever. There was never more than one other person dining in each time I came. Maybe it's because I came so late in the day? More people would make it feel like a convivial breakfast destination. Empty, it feels like a good place with good food. Yes, it's overpriced, especially with all the delicious food you can get for cheaper within a few doors of this business on 24th Street in the Mission. But Wise Sons. It's a thing, a thing I'm glad I got wise to. *Did they sell out? Just didn't bother to make it? Who orders egg salad in the 2020s, anyway?

Great Reuben Sandwiches!…read more This location is very convenient to BART (24th Street / Mission station). It is only a three block walk from the station. My wife and I were meeting someone in San Francisco in the afternoon and we wanted to eat lunch beforehand. We were interested in trying Wise Sons Deli since we have heard so many people praising it. Since we were coming into the city via BART, this location was great. The ambiance is pretty basic; ordinary tables and chairs and only some photos on one wall. You order and pay at the counter and then someone will deliver the food to the table. If you want coffee or water it is serve-yourself. However, the food is fantastic! My wife ordered a corned beef Reuben sandwich ($18.50). It was thick and very tasty. I ordered a House Special Pastrami Reuben that had a smaller Reuben sandwich, french fries, a side of cole slaw, and a drink ($19.50). While it had half as much meat as the regular Reuben, it was still a good size. They make their own Pastrami and Corned Beef and it tastes great. My wife normally doesn't like Pastrami but loved the taste of Pastrami made by Wise Sons. The meat is thick, tender, juicy, and DELICIOUS!

At the brick and mortar shop and the farmers market the staff is always nice and helpful with picking out bagels if undecided. Update to a Formerly Glowing Review…read more This is an update to what was once a glowing review of my beloved Pizzahacker. I've been going for many, many years (close to 10--or more?), so it pains me to say that some changes under new management have shifted the experience for me. Jeff Krupman, the founder and chef (who ended up being a friend!) sold the business to one of his longtime employees a year ago or more ago. (He still owns the Mill Valley location). While they tried to keep a lot of things the same h feel noticeably different. It's interesting that it still shows his name as manager. Here's what I've noticed--not in a good way: The menu now feels overwhelmingly meat-forward, with a dearth of thoughtfully designed vegetarian pizzas. I have mentioned this to Jesse (longtime staff) and a female server, asking them to pass this along. Each pizza also seems to have several more ounces of (still very delicious sourdough) dough. The crust is significantly thicker, and there's simply more of it. What once felt light and beautifully balanced now feels heavier. Vegetarian options are largely reduced to subtraction of meat . I've spoken with longtime waitstaff (including Jesse) and asked that this feedback be shared with Juan, the new owner. One server suggested I could just order a pizza without the meat. But a thoughtfully composed vegetarian pizza is very different from a meat pizza with ingredients removed--and at $24, paying full price for a pizza minus its main topping feels unfair. Perhaps there could be a cheaper option availabile for meaty pizzas without the meat. Please consider making The Summer Fave year round, bringing back the Inside Out, and/or creating more pizzas that don't center around multiple meats. Also, I know that the new management has changed some of the ingredients that made their pizzas so special and delicious. In particular, the sausage on the Yo Vinny, which used to be house made is now closer to the generic sausage you'd find at Pizza Hut. Loses so much of the experience to change to these cheaper ingredients. (I lean vegetarian as much as possible but make occasional exceptions, so I know this!) I used to go to Pizzahacker weekly and look forward to it with genuine excitement. Now, while I still enjoy the occasional pizza, that sense of anticipation is gone. I do want to say I'm grateful that my beloved Intermezzo salad remains unchanged--and I still care deeply about this place. I love PH--please consider the earnest pleas of a longtime customer who has eaten there many dozens of times.
